Inspiration comes in many forms. It can be a passage from a book, art work or music. Inspiration hit my staff when Central Washington Alum Mike Wells visited and shared his stories. He spoke with such passion and joy for his profession, almost as if he was resuscitating the class. I felt it, my editors felt it, the mid-season stumble. But Mike, he also feels it. And he told us that it’s ok, it’s a grind and you have to keep pushing. Well, we pushed and we accomplished. Pulse has you covered with a 24-hour timeline of Portland, OR. Whether you want to check out a Blazers basketball game or find that bar that calls to you, you’ll be sure to find something that excites you on page 7. Having trouble defeating those pesky Pokemon gym leaders? Study our CWU Pokemon league guide to get all the tips and tricks for success on page 52. But remember, Team Rocket is always near! We’ve all had that awkward moment in life, for instance, meeting eyes with the guy next to you at the urinal. Pulse details some more funny moments for you on page 64 and tell us your #awkwardmoment on Twitter and Facebook. With the end of the quarter lurking around and spring on its way, get ready with Pulse’s album reviews to get the perfect tunes for your vacation on page 72. After you’ve grooved out, check out our Preseason BBQ story on page 47 and fire up your grill, it’s BBQ season. A lot of hard work and time went into this issue and I thank my staff. Everyone worked so hard to bring this issue to life. Also, a round of applause for my editing staff Lindsey, Pete and Megan and designers Carli and Daniel for all their hard work and time. Thanks guys. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Until next time,

OUR TOWN

24 hours in Portland Story and Photos by: Lindsey Wisniewski Cover Photo by: Kyle Kruchok

If you've seen the show Portlandia, you know that Portland's slogan “Keep Portland Weird wasn't created for just any reason. The people in Portland thrive on the uniqueness of this weird city, and it's made Portland one of the most sought out places to both live and visit. While Portland is very different from its sister city to the North, Seattle, Portland is abundant in coffee roasters, farm-to-fork restaurants, bike friendly lanes and hip neighborhoods throughout the city.

08 PULSE

Barista - 8 a.m. Located in the Northeast part of the city, the Alberta Arts District is a diverse, artistic area featuring some of the best art, shops and dining options in town. One of the intriguing parts about Alberta is how there is a coffee shop on nearly every corner. You won't find Starbucks on this street. The block, filled with plentiful cafes and roasters, makes it the perfect first stop for a morning coffee for our day in Portland. If not the best, Barista is definitely one of the stand-out coffee shops Portland has to offer. Barista takes delicious coffees from near and far and extracts them into the perfect cup. Typically, Barista has three coffees picked out for you to enjoy in your cup, all of which contain a different flavor profile. This enables their customers to pick and choose what notes they would like to enjoy in their coffee for the day. On our visit, the three roasts for the day were Stumptown Coffee Roasters and Water Avenue—both out of Portland—and Ceremony Roasters from Maryland. Barista extracts these roasts into a smooth, well-rounded, foamy latte and of course, rounded out with the perfect foam art design. These baristas take their coffee pretty seriously as many of them can be found competing in the NW Barista competition and US Barista Championships. Not sold on the latte? You can also choose from a milk or dark chocolate mocha, made from single origin chocolates. Barista can be found in three different locations in Portland: 539 NW 13th Avenue 1725 NE Alberta Street 529 SW 3rd Ave- Unit 110

Pine State Biscuits - 9 a.m. Afterwards, we ventured just a couple of blocks down to Pine State Biscuits off of NE Alberta. This southern style restaurant combines fresh, local ingredients with a bit of momma’s home cookin’. Collaborating food interests from their North Carolina State college days, the three owners of Pine State began their adventure at the local Portland Farmers Market. They have since expanded to their two locations at: 2204 NE Alberta & 3640 SE Belmont Street Among their menu items, Pine State offers a variety of biscuit sandwiches and “southern-style” breakfast items. The Reggie (biscuit, gravy, fried chicken, bacon, and cheddar) and Chatfield (biscuit, fried chicken, bacon, cheddar, and apple butter) are their most popular items on the menu. The biscuits are crisp and buttery, and the gravy is savory and meaty. Don’t worry if you're a vegetarian; they have delicious gravy for you, too! Pine State portions are hefty, and the price is very affordable. Care for a drink? Served in a mason jar with a lemon wedge, Pine State is one of the only places where you can find a sweet tea in the NW done right.

Saturday Market / Tom McCall Waterfront Park - 10 p.m. After stuffing your belly, a great place to walk it off is at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Located along the Willamette River, this park is frequently used recreationally. It's a great spot to ride your fixed gear or people watch throughout the morning. Tom McCall Waterfront Park is also home to the Portland Spirit; a ship offering daily cruises with beautiful, scenic views of Portland's many bridges and gorgeous sights. On Saturdays and Sundays—the busiest time on the waterfront—Tom McCall Waterfront Park is also home to the largest open-air arts and craft market in the country. Even though it’s known as the Portland Saturday Market, the market is actually open on both Saturdays and Sundays. This market is divided on two sides with international and local arts and crafts. Whether you're looking for unique woodwork or handcrafted soaps, this Portland Saturday market has it all. Portland Saturday Market 2 SW Naito Parkway

11 PULSE

Portland Food Carts - 1 p.m. One great way to recover from a long bike ride along the waterfront is to grab a bite at one of Portland's many food cart locations. With over 700 food carts, Portland may just be one of the best street food cities in the world. With lunchtime in mind, one of the food cart spots you must check out is Cartopia off of Hawthorne & SE 12th. With extensive hours and heated areas, Cartopia is one of the most frequently visited cart pods in town. Cartopia is home to PBJ'S Grilled Gourmet Sandwiches, Bubba Bernie's, El Brasero, The Sugar Cube, Pyro Pizza, Potato Champion, Whiffies and Perriera Creperie. From hot off-the-brick wood-fired pizza to sweet fried pies to cheesy poutine, there are too many choices not to try them all and that's exactly what we recommend you do. More Food Cart locations to try: SW 3rd & Washington SW 3rd & Stark SW 5th & Stark SW 9th & Alder N. Williams & Shaver NE 52nd & Sandy NE 15th & Alberta

Powell's City of Books off Burnside/ Shopping off 23rd - 3 p.m. For those who love to read the occasional novel, Portland is home to the largest new and used bookstore in the world. What's really neat about this book-lovers wonderland is that nearly 3,000 people enter Powell's City of Books every single day. Throughout the store, you will also find staff suggestions beneath certain books that offer insight into why Powell's employees enjoyed a specific book. So even if you don't like to read, Powell's has something that everyone can enjoy. One thing that makes the Powell's City of Books location of Burnside unique is what is known as the Rare Book Room. Inside this room, Powell's houses some of the most valuable and one-of-a-kind books on the planet. If books aren't your thing, just up the road from Powell's is NW 23rd. If you ask the locals, NW 23rd is frequently dubbed "Trendy-third." This eclectic street is home to a vast array of modish, upscale boutiques and shops in town. But if you shop on Trendy-third, make sure your wallet is full because this street isn't for the budget spender. With many rare finds on this street, NW 23rd is perfect for shopper who loves the thrill of a good find. Powell's locations: Powell's City of Books 1005 W. Pok Pok - 5 p.m. Home of 2011 Best Chef northwest, Andy Ricker, Pok Pok has been featured in more articles and food television shows that one could possibly count. Seen on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and featured in Food & Wine magazine, this restaurant has brought authentic Southeast Asian food to Portland's front. Some of the local’s favorites are the Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings and Khao Soi, both dishes recognized for their unique combinations. Another unique part of the menu is Pok Pok's drinking vinegars. Some of their flavors are pineapple, thai basil, and tamarind, to name a few. These vinegars are used in house to make sparkling vinegar beverages and delicious, unique cocktails. Quick Tip: The Pok Pok location off of SE Division is frequently more populated with long wait times. If you decide to travel to the NE location, you will rarely have to wait. Portland Trail Blazers Game - 7 p.m. Coined by the team's legendary play-by-play announcer, Bill Schonely, there is no better place to be on a game night in Portland than Rip City. Known by the locals as the Rose Garden, the recently renamed Moda Center is home to one of the nation's best NBA teams, the Portland Trail Blazers. One of the great things about the Moda Center is there isn't a bad seat in the house. Whether you're sitting court side rubbing elbows with Paul Allen or sitting club level eating unlimited food, each spot in the Moda Center provides a unique and unforgettable experience. The electrifying "MVP," chants for LaMarcus Aldridge and the person next to you putting up their "three googles," when Wesley Matthews hits a game winning three, can't be found just anywhere else. The Blazers are currently third in the Western Conference and are expected to make the NBA playoffs. With both Aldridge and Lillard making the All-Star team this season, there's no better time then now to get a taste of #LillardTime.

15 PULSE

Casa del Matador - 10 p.m. After the game, there's nowhere better to go for celebratory drinks then Casa del Matador. Located a short drive away in either SE or NW Portland, Casa del Matador is known for their killer margaritas and Texassize steak nachos. One of their unexpected menu items is the Tamarind margarita. Acidic and fruit-filled, this tempting margarita is topped off with a cinnamon rim and is personally, one of the best I've ever had. With a wide variety of tequilas and specialty liquors, this gothicesque bar is an after game stop that must be seen. Casa del Matador has two Portland locations that can be found at: 1438 NW 23rd Ave 2424 East Burnside Street

Salt and Straw - 11 p.m. Salt & Straw is the new “Voodoo Donuts,” igniting crowds of local Portlanders and visitors from afar, which flock to try the best, tasty ice cream in town. Recognized in various press articles, such as Oprah Magazine and CBS Sunday Morning, Salt and Straw explores interesting and fun new flavors. A few of the flavors Pulse enjoyed in our recent visit to Salt & Straw include: Chèvre with Marionberry Habenero Jam, Honey Balsamic Strawberry with Cracked Pepper, Cinnamon Snicker doodle, Coffee and Bourbon, and Honey Lavender. All of these flavors incorporate a one-of-a-kind, unique experience for just about any palate. What could possibly take this ice cream shop to the next level? The fact that every month they have new, seasonal flavors. This keeps the crowds flowing in at the beginning of the month and of course, Salt & Straw is always keeping customers on their toes with weird, delectable combinations. & THE POPE A SOUTH AMERICAN VACATION STORY BY: PETE O’CAIN | PHOTOS BY: DANIEL OCHNIK

15 18 PULSE

Every few years, millions of young people gather by a stage. They form a mass of bodies that stretches for miles; so big they distort the landscape. They come from all over—North America, South America, Europe—to see one man: Pope Francis.

It’s known as World Youth Day. The Catholic Church initiated it 30 years ago in Vatican City, Italy when about 300,000 young people attended. Last July it was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over 3.5 million showed up. Patryk Wiatr, a lanky, longhaired senior computer science major,

was one of them. He went with his cousins Daniel, 21 and Olivia Ochnik, 19, both of whom attend Western Washington University, and their mother Christina. But their South American adventure began long before Rio.

PATRYK WIATR 16 19 PULSE

Peru Wiatr and his family went to a few weeks before heading to Rio. They stayed in a smallhostel in Cuzco, chewed coca leaves, and drank coca tea. However, the mild effects of the plant couldn’t shield them from the weather.

Curitiba Waitr and his family met up with other Riobound church groups in Curitiba, a city of 1.7 million in southeastern Brazil. Most of the groups were people of Polish descent, like Wiatr’s family. They stayed with different host families for a few days.

“It was crazy because like during the day it was like 90 degrees and at night it was cold as shit,” Wiatr says. “... it was freezing. Absolutely freezing.”

“So we’d wake up at like 6 in the morning, our family would cook us hella good breakfast—they were super nice,” Wiatr says. “And then we would meet up with the rest of our group and pretty much like the church there was doing everything for us.”

Soon, they visited Machu Picchu, the Incan ruins high in the Andes Mountains. They left Cuzco early in the morning, drove to the mountains, and then hiked for a few hours to reach it. He says pictures don’t do it justice. “That was probably the best part of the trip,” he says. “We were eating lunch and ... you sit overlooking just miles of mountains, green mountains ... It was awesome.”

19 20 17 PULSE

Only one member of Wiatr’s host family spoke English. That turned out to be just enough to fuel hours of conversation. Well. that and drinking what he calls the Brazilian version of Rainier. “We pretty much drank for like two hours and talked about soccer and the world cup and the Olympics that are going to be

there in 2016,” he says. “It was pretty cool.” Rio de Janerio Rio was interesting.

‘I don’t have any money!” It seems the Brazilian government was expecting some disorder, though. Military personnel were everywhere.

I was like a nervous

At an enormous celebration of Christ and Catholicism, Wiatr had the misfortune of being robbed of a few hundred dollars. “So one day I was looking at my account to see how much I had left for the trip and someone was taking out like [$40 or $60] at a time,” he says. “They ended up taking like $300, $400 before I closed my account down.”

wreck while I was in Brazil, ‘I don’t have any money!

He still doesn’t know what exactly happened. He figures someone took his information while he was paying for something. Waitr got his money back, but at the time, it was terrifying. “I was like a nervous wreck while I was

One morning, he and his group went for breakfast before seeing the Pope. About 10 trucks filled with soldiers carrying loaded weapons filed off into the city.

“Like if you saw that in like Seattle or something people would freak,” Wiatr says. The center of World Youth Day was at Copacabana Beach, Rio’s famous strip of sand. This is where the millions fathered in a sea of bodies. Wiatr’s group had tickets to see the pope that would put them near the front. But they stood in the back because the crowd

was too much. To take advantage of their tickets they would have had to camp out a few days early. Although they did sleep on the beach the night before mass. Pope Francis gave a fairly standard speech, Wiatr says. He spoke of peace and the youth. He thanked everyone for coming and he thanked Rio for having them. He also announced Krakow, Poland as the site of the next World Youth Day in 2016. Polish people quickly became local celebrities, Wiatr says. It helped him get one of his favorite souvenirs from the trip. “So at the end, I pulled a Polish flag out of my backpack and some dude—didn’t speak any English—tapped me on the shoulder and just like pointed at my flag,” Wiatr says. “He had a Brazil flag ... and we traded for that.” The flag is hanging in his room today.

Take Your Best Shot! Story and Photos by: Derrick Clarit

It’s safe to say that the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy both rule the smart phone market in popularity. With the 5s for the iPhone and the S4 for the Galaxy, both producers enhance their photography capabilities. With the smart phones that have been coming out recently, anyone can become an amateur photographer. So, why don’t we see just how well these two top ranking smart phones compare to an actual camera?

iPhone 5s • “isight”camera • 8 megapixels • F/2.2 aperture • True tone flash • Burst mode • 3x Zoom • Auto focus • Face recognition • Auto image stabilization • Panorama capabilities • HD video recording with photo capability • Slow motion • Live video zoom • Photo filters

Galaxy S4 • • • • • • • • • • • •

Canon Rebel T2i • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

*All photos taken in complete auto settings including auto flash. So, similar to the spec comparison, the Canon Rebel 2TI takes the cake due to its high megapixels and auto functionality to produce the best photo possible. Although the Samsung Galaxy S4 has way more megapixels than the 5s, the 5s comes in second with quality and better color blending. Even though the S4 came in third, don’t count it out when it comes to taking photos. It’s still one of the top camera phones out on the market. So if you can’t afford a Canon or something similar, if you get an iPhone 5s or the Galaxy S4, you’ll give every photographer a run for their money.

Cars For The College Budget Written By: Megan Burch

If it’s time to start looking at getting a car and you’re thinking of buying or leasing something new, we’ve got seven cars here that are worth checking out: 1. Kia Soul This car is for more than just giant hamsters. It’s actually one of the best-selling models in Kia’s lineup. The 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine puts out 130 HP in the base model and gets 26 MPG overall. It also has a 5-star safety rating. There is also a fair amount of space in the back of the Soul. But, the base model doesn’t come with all the cool features that you see with the hamsters. The only cool thing you’re gonna find is Bluetooth connectivity. All of the other features come in the + and ! packages. If you don’t need a ton of fancy gadgets and just need some space to put your dog or your gear in the back, this car will get the job done.

Base: $14,900* +: $18, 200 !: $20,300 Source: www.kia.com

42 PULSE

2. Fiat 500 These tiny cars are great if you really want to customize your car and make it your own. With 15 different colors, multiple different interior combinations, and 50 different accessories, there is no way you will find the exact same 500 twice. The base model, or Pop, has a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 101 HP, gets 31 MPG in the city and has a 4-star safety rating. One problem is that with any of the packages, you’re going to have to fork over some extra cash for an automatic. Everything about this car is small, including the trunk and passenger space. The 500 is fun to drive and is perfect for city driving where there isn’t always room for a giant car.

Pop: $16,195 Sport: $17,500 Lounge: $18,500 Turbo: $19,500 Source: www.fiatusa.com

3. Toyota Corolla If you’re looking for something a bit more sensible, the Toyota Corolla is one to consider. The base model, or L, has a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 132 HP, gets 31 MPG overall and has a 5-star safety rating. The trunk is quite big for a sedan at 13 cubic feet. LATCH (child seat safety tethers) comes standard on all models. Though, if you’re looking for a splash of color, you’ll have to spend a bit more because the base model only comes in white, light gray, dark gray, and black. This car has safe and sensible written all over it and will be around for quite a while if you keep up the maintenance on it.

4. Hyundai Veloster The Hyundai Veloster is a car that is huge on the tech, even in the base model. All models come with back-up cameras, Sirius XM radio and Bluetooth connectivity. Though, the reason that you get a back-up camera is because you can’t really see much out of the back. The base model has a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 138 HP and gets 30 MPG overall. One problem is that the Veloster hasn’t been rated for safety, but Hyundai tends to have safe cars, such as the Elantra, which the Veloster is based off of. One downside is that, even though it can seat 4, the back seat doesn’t have much room. If you fold the back two seats down, it leaves tons of cargo space, but it’s a bit of a lift getting something in there. Overall, the Veloster is good for those that want something that definitely has a unique look and comes with a fair bit of tech.

Base: $17,800 Turbo R-spec: $21,300 Turbo: $22,300 Source: www.hyundaiusa.com

5. Nissan Frontier The Nissan Frontier is a compact pickup that won’t break the bank. The base model is fairly stripped of bells and whistles. In fact, the base model, S, doesn’t even come standard with AC or cruise control. The bed of all models is about 6ft. The base model has a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 152 HP and gets 19 MPG in the city. If you’re going to do more than minimal hauling and towing, the base model isn’t going to cut it. The 4 liter V6 is what you’ll want to go for. While it is more expensive, it is still cheaper than most pickups, and the V6 comes standard with a bit more tech.

S: $17,900 SV-4 cylinder: $21,660 SV-V6: $23,000 Source: www.nissanusa.com

6. Ford Focus The Ford Focus is a little pricier than other hot hatches, but it’s worth the extra cost. The Focus comes standard with a Flex Fuel engine, so it’ll take ethanol as well as gasoline. The base model has a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 160 HP and gets 26 MPG in the city and also has a 5-star safely rating. The SE hatchback comes standard with Ford’s MyKey system which lets drivers program their personalized settings into the car which are activated by their key. MyKey can also limit MPH and radio volume. The SE also comes with voice activated entertainment as well. And since it’s a hatchback, there is a fair amount of storage in the back. This is a versatile little car that gets pretty good mileage as well.

SE: $18,625 Titanium: $23,575 ST: $23,625 Source: www.ford.com

7. Mazda CX-5 Whether you classify it as a crossover or a small SUV, the Mazda CX-5 is a great pick for those that need a little more room than a sedan can provide. The base model, sport, has a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 155 HP and gets 29 MPG overall, which is best in class. The CX-5 also has a 5-star safety rating. The touring and grand touring models come with blind spot alert system, which is because of the giant blind spots that the CX-5 has. All trim levels have the option of having front wheel drive or all wheel drive, but the AWD is going to cost a bit extra. There are limited accessories that can be added to the CX-5, as well. But, if you’re looking for something that is reliable and safe, the CX-5 is the way to go

Jointly designed between Toyota and Subaru, these two cars are essentially the same but do have some minor differences. They both have a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder Boxer engine that puts out about 200 HP. Both are rearwheel drive, which makes for improved handling but less passenger space in the back. Both get 25 overall mpg, as well as having a 5-star safety rating. The biggest differences between these cars is the look. The BRZ comes with available leather and Alcantara, faux suede, heated seats and navigation. The FR-S is a little less refined but has a more aggressive suspension tuning, making it more fun to drive. And, while they both have fairly limited color options, the FR-S has more than the BRZ. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to be a fun car to drive.

GRILLS OUT PRESEASON BBQ

BBQ

Story by: Derrik Clarit

GU I DE As the winter comes to an end there is only one thing to do, pull the grill out! For the avid grillers or those who have never grabbed a spatula in their life, here is the perfect crash course for you to become a self-proclaimed chef.

G AS O R C HA RC OA L? This is probably one of the biggest questions you will encounter if you don’t already have a preference. The perks of a gas grill are the simple facts that a propane tank lasts longer than a bag of charcoal and gas is cleaner, meaning its emissions aren’t contributing as much to pollution–for those that care.

Charcoal on the other hand, emits carbon monoxide contributing to air pollution. But charcoal adds a smoky taste that gives food that extra flavor grillers drool for, even if you have to pay a little extra.

F OOD PREP Before setting fire to the grill you have to make sure your food is ready to hit the rack. Your choice of meat should be well-marinated and seasoned to your liking, peppers should be chopped and ready, and corn should be wrapped in foil. When marinating meat, know that it only takes a good 30 minutes of sitting for it to be grill worthy.

48 PULSE

GRI LL PREP After your food is prepared, preheat your grill for a good 15 to 25 minutes. The perks of this is the grill becomes easier to clean and when you finally throw on your food, the grill will sear the food on contact. Don’t worry though, this is a good thing. When food is seared, it creates extra flavors by causing caramelization. Having the grill hot and ready to go also keeps the inside of your meat moist and prevents sticking. Another way to prevent sticking is to rub a paper towel soaked in vegetable oil on the rack, never use cooking spray for this.

W HAT YOU ’V E B EE N W AI TI N G F OR Now that you have the grill preheated and the meat marinated, it’s time to throw those bad boys on the grill. You can sit and converse with it or you can drop the top and check on it periodically like a fancy new car, it’s your choice. But when you’re done, make sure to let it sit for 10 minutes so that the juices redistribute evenly.

ST. PATTY'S DAY PARTY Story by: Tyler Buchanan

Every March 17th, the Irish and those who appreciate Irish culture commemorate St. Patrick’s Day. What started as an Irish celebration called the Feast of Saint Patrick, named after the most commonly recognized patron saints of Ireland, became a holiday famous around the world for its very green theme.

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated with parades, dancing, and social gatherings. But what can you do at home to throw the perfect Saint Patrick’s Day party? Creative St. Patty’s day food is a fun way to make a scene! Anything from green cupcakes to key lime squares and green chocolate covered strawberries will make a statement.

50 PULSE

How about a great drink idea that is inexpensive and easy to do? Just add some green food coloring to some Sprite for a bright green Irish themed drink! Irish beers such as Guinness and Irish Death can also set the theme for the party as well.

If you don't want to DIY, Central Party and Costume, located here in Ellensburg, has some unique ideas and rental equipment for St. Patrick’s Day themed parties. “We have everything available from Saint Patrick’s Day themed plates, napkins, tablecloths to costumes ,including fake beards and green hats," says Eva Frink, the owner of Central Party and Costume. Frink suggested that another great way to decorate a room is to stream Irish flags around the perimeter. This keeps the party authentic to the holiday’s roots all the while providing a colorful and exciting environment.

Story by: Adam Wilson Pictures by: Carli Seaman

The ever-popular Pokémon franchise will be a part of campus life next quarter with the beginning of Central Pokémon League. The league, founded by Charles Harding, a sophomore writing specialization major, is comprised of 13 skilled student trainers. Becoming Central’s Pokémon champion requires a challenger to defeat all of them. Harding sat at home playing Pokémon when the idea came to him to start the league, and found a group of like-minded people to volunteer their time as gym leaders and Elite 4 members. The league is also a social club that meets meets every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Holmes Dining. “We’re getting about 20 people per meeting now and more per week. We just sit around and discuss some of the rules … and the rest of it is just people sitting around playing Pokémon.” Harding said.

Tips and Tricks for Becoming the next Champion You get access to a pool of nine Pokemon that you’re not allowed to switch once you’ve begun your challenge. For the individual gym leaders, you can make a sixpokemon lineup from those nine and switch them out in every attempt. You cannot switch out your party during an Elite 4 attempt. Because of this, a large type variance is key to defeating the Elite 4—relying on one Pokemon won’t work like it does in the games! The Elite 4 hasn’t fully been decided yet. It is confirmed that the final two members will be Fairy and Dragon trainers, and the first two will be between Normal, Flying, and Water types. For the best, theoretical, success, any of the following pokemon should provide a good chance at success.

59 PULSE

Skarmory (Steel/Flying) Skarmory is a great Defensive Pokemon because of its stellar base Defense and its type resistances against 10 move types, including Dragon, Fairy, and Flying. A lot of Flying moves in particular are physical based, which Skarmory excels against. Giving Skarmory Roost and preemptively using it against electric moves will remove its weakness to it, while also healing it considerably.

Aegislash (Steel/Ghost) Aegislash is one of the best offensive sweepers in the game, but it also has a number of type advantages. Sacred Sword will shred through Normal type and Iron Head will do the same against Fairies. With regular swaps between Attack and Defense Mode to counter super effective moves, Aegislash can prove to be a formidable foe against all trainers.

Volcarona (Bug/Fire) Bug pokemon in general are underrated, and Volcarona is a great example of one. It is one of only nine Pokemon that can learn Quiver Dance—increases Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed— and its typing grants it access to strong moves like Fiery Dance or Fire Blast that further compliment a special attack sweeper strategy. Just be careful with its weaknesses: in addition to the water and flying weakness, it takes 4x damage from rock moves!

60 PULSE

Azumarill (Water/Fairy) The new Fairy type should be heavily exploited to defeat the dragons at the end of the Elite 4. Azumarill is a fantastic all-around fairy type to do just that. Its resistance to 7 types, including total immunity from Dragon moves, compliments its defensive base stats. However, with the massive attack power of the fairy move Play Rough, and its ability Huge Power, doubles attack power of moves, Azumarill can cause big problems for a large chunk of Elite 4 Pokémon, while being able to withstand a few blows itself. For more Pokémon-trainer and team-building tips, head to http://www.smogon.com/ Rules -Challengers can pick 9 of their own Pokémon to enter the league with. This pool of Pokémon is what you use in picking your teams for each Gym Leader. -All Pokémon are available except for the following.

-All legendaries

-Mega Kangaskahn

-Mega Gengar

-Blaziken w/ Speed Boost

-No repeat Pokémon

My freshman year roommate was batshit crazy. I knew she hated me, “ but I was still curious to know what she was always writing about in her

diary. One day when she left the room I locked the door and began to read. Apparently she just went to the bathroom because when I heard her start to unlock the door I freaked and told her I was changing. I tried to place the book back in the same quirky position and quickly change my shirt, but when she came in she went directly to her bedside table and stared at the book for a good couple of minutes. She never accused me of reading it, but I think we both knew.

Music Review

By: Max Wisman

Glitch Mob

Love, Death and Immortality (Electronic with touches of hip-hop) If you’re looking for something to get you pumped up enough to take over the world, —or maybe just to get you motived on your run or hike—you’ll want to take a listen to these guys and their new album Love, Death, Immortality. Personally, I am not a huge Dubstep/Electronic Dance music fan, but I enjoyed this album. It definitely gets you going and is something I would strongly advise anyone looking for some quality motivational music.

Kid Cudi

Satellite Flight (Hip-Hop) Generally speaking, this album could be a lot better, and unfortunately it’s not similar to his Man on the Moon—the album that everybody loved. His lyrics are relatively solid, but most of the songs on this album have very a slow, unique beat that slows down the songs dramatically. As a guy who’s seen Kid Cudi in concert twice and is, historically, a big fan of his, this album was pretty tough for me to endure all the way through.

72 PULSE

Pharrell Williams G I R L (Hip-hop)

Pharell’s new album contains some great new music and will likely be a big hit on the radio and billboard charts—especially the song featuring Justin Timberlake. The songs are very carefree and light enough to appeal to a wide array of audiences. Additionally, I think it is safe to that this album is mostly full of “feel good” music.

The Fray

Helios (Alternative/ soft rock) We haven’t heard a whole lot of new music from the Fray in recent years, but they just released a new album in mid-January. Overall, their album is pretty typical of them and how do you say: “very Fray-ish.” If you’re usually a fan of The Fray, you will likely be a huge supporter of this new album. They do an excellent job at sticking to what they know and doing it well. They’re not trying to overcompensate for something they don’t have.

Dierks Bentley RISER (Country)

I was big advocate of this album and generally enjoy the music that Dierks Bentley produces. However, this album is very country, and if you’re not a fan of country, you probably won’t immediately be in love with this album. Although, this album does contain a lot of different paces of music, everything from exciting summer jams to slow paced songs you could listen to around a bon fire.

BEER PONG LEAGUE p u c h t a e d # Story by: Max Wisman Photos by: Drew Nelson

#Kob

e

Wander into 301 on a Tuesday night and you might notice some students at the bar drinking low-priced beer and engaging in a little casual conversation. But the real action is in the back where the dance floor has been converted into a beer pong arena. The room is filled with four beer pong tables, lined side by side. No surprise to anyone the floor is stickier than the average establishment, and the people are a bit sweatier than typical costumers. It provides a laid-back environment for people to talk and toss ping pong balls into Solo cups. Some competitors take the league a little more seriously than others, but it’s still pretty relaxed. The league has a $20 buy-in and consists of 12 teams, with colorful names like “2 dudes 10 cups” and “The Ratz.” The winners get $400, second place gets $100 and third place gets their money back. As far as the rules go, “it is the most basic form of beer pong you can play,” says Conner Cronin, a member of “The Ratz.” It’s simply old school beer pong: no fingering, heating up or balls back. In addition, to rebuttal you have to clear all the cups on the other side, not just hit a single cup like many are accustomed to. “It is awesome to finally have a structured beer pong league where I can test my skills,” said Tyler Duhnam, of “2 Dudes 10 Cups.” If you’re in need of some weekday fun and cheap beer, this beer pong league may be the spot for you. Cups are racked Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
