Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

Autumn has certainly arrived in the Colour City! The changing trees have been in stunning display these past few weeks! It really is a great time of year here in Orange, particularly with weather like we had over the weekend. The family and I spent a very pleasant sunny Saturday afternoon in Cook Park, which is just looking fantastic at the moment.

But of course, that means winter is not too far away, as evidenced by the closing of the Orange Aquatic Centre outdoor pool this week. I don’t mind the cold, really. I just hope we see a little more blue sky than last winter.

It is Monday afternoon as I write this as the Anzac Day public holiday on Tuesday pushed our print deadline forward, which has meant we were unable to get photographs of the march and ceremony into this issue. Look for shots from our photographer in next week’s OCL.

It was great to see the Orange RSL Sub-Branch and Cadia partner to help the Eugowra Progress Association get the town’s 92-yearold war memorial back into shape ahead of this Anzac Day. Teams from Cadia repainted the ood-damaged memorial and many other organisations chipped in to help restore the memorial, the gardens and surrounds. I’m sure it was all greatly appreciated. Inside this edition, we have a little feature on the Victoria Hotel, which is celebrating 100 years since the current pub opened its doors to thirsty patrons. I admit I was surprised to learn that the Victoria Hotel’s history actually stretches back to the 1840s and is one of the oldest continually running businesses in Orange. You can read more about the hotel’s history on page 8.

Until next week!

New historical photo exhibition opens a window to Molong’s past

Launching this weekend at the Molong Historical Museum is an extraordinary exhibition of historical photographs documenting the people, building significant happenings in Molong more than a century ago.

The exhibition contains more than 100 historical photographs, the bulk of which were taken by the prolific Molong photographer, Godfrey Tilbrook, who was active in the photo trade from 1904 until the early 1930s.

The idea for the exhibition came after the recent donation of not only a large collection of his images but also the very camera he used in his Molong studio.

“Mrs Nickie Sloan, she is a descendant of Godfrey Tilbrook, and she presented us with about 40 of his photographs and unbeknownst to her she gave me the box that actually contained his camera!” Molong Historical Society member and exhibition coordinator, Julie Lawrie said.

“So that gave us the impetus to say, well this is a very good basis for an exhibition and so that was the springboard for us to starting to collect more.”

The Molong Museum already had quite

a collection of Tilbrook photographs, which range from studio portraits to major events and scenes of daily life.

“Everything from views along the Bell River, people harvesting their crops, weddings, portraits, groups of footballers, groups of girls doing some sort of gymnastic display, street parades,” Julie said.

“When Godfrey was taking photos was the beginning of postcards, s o he was taking photos of local buildings that were being used as postcards and also people were having their portraits taken and they were being turned into postcards.

“So he is so important because he actually is recording the social and family history of Molong… and the quality of the photos is just absolutely amazing because they were taken on glass plates and he also used a tripod.”

Noticeable in many of Tibrook’s studio photos is the painted background depicting a neoclassical-style verandah and garden beyond. The backdrop has been recreated as a feature of the new

exhibition, by artist Mark Edwin-Oates. Alongside the exhibition of Tilbrooks photographs will be a small selection of earlier images taken by the James Brothers, who were in business in Molong in the 1870s.

“They were only here for a few years, but their contribution was also quite significant and their photographs are quite rare… we will have on display 16 of those and most of those were little carte de visite portraits, but once again it’s such a significant view into the past,” Julie said.

In a twist of fate, Julie said one of those early photos is of a prize draft horse; the medal it won was then discovered in the museum’s collection.

“There’s lots of things that have come out of it,” she said. “For every photograph we’ve found there’s a huge story and our researchers have been able to record that.”

The launch of the photo exhibition will also be a celebration for the reopening

of the Molong Museum. Located in the 170-year-old former Golden Fleece Hotel, in Riddell Street, the museum has been closed for nearly two years due to extensive renovations to the surrounding verandah and COVID restrictions

This Friday night, April 28, will be the official launch of the new exhibition but numbers will be limited to the Molong Historical Society members and invited guests.

Then on Saturday morning, April 29, the contributors to the renovations will get their chance to have a look through the exhibition and the reopened museum.

The Godfrey Tilbrook and James Brothers historic photograph exhibition will then be open to the public during museum opening hours and will be on display for the next 12 months.

The Molong Historical Museum is located at 20 Riddell Street, Molong.

Opening Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 11am – 3pm, other times and weekends by appointment.

Major acquisition memento of Orange Regional Gallery’s most successful exhibition

Orange Regional Gallery has a significant new addition to its permanent collection, thanks to the Friends of Orange Regional Gallery (FORG) who purchased the $45,000 sculpture, Chthonic Head 2 (2018) by internationally acclaimed British artist Laurence Edwards.

The large cast bronze sculpture was the welcoming piece to the gallery’s recent exhibition of Edwards’ work, the first comprehensive survey of his work to be shown in Australia.

The exhibition, A Gathering of Uncertainties, proved to be a real drawcard for our local gallery and was one of their most popular to date; second only, in fact, to the touring Archibald Prize exhibition.

“Yes, this has been one of the most successful in the gallery’s history,” Orange Regional Gallery Director Brad Hammond said.

The 10-week exhibition was visited by over 8000 people and also saw the gallery have

its busiest ever single day with almost 600 people coming through on Easter Saturday.

“We really saw the word-of-mouth factor with this exhibition,” Brad said. “We’ve had some locals revisiting the exhibition about seven times and other locals who brought their friends… a lot of people travelling from interstate, from Sydney and Victoria to see the exhibition.”

For a regional gallery like Orange to host an exhibition of this significance was a real coup and one that was only possible due to the recent major extensions to the gallery building.

“We always hope that we can do two things: support our local artists and to bring really great quality content to our region to share with our audience and the extension is really making that possible,” Brad said, adding that it also has allowed them the space to keep their permanent collection on display.

And that permanent collection now includes the large cast bronze sculpture, Chthonic Head 2 (2018), which sits in the gallery foyer.

“I just love it,” Brad said. “This is a major

acquisition, it’s a major piece by one of the UK’s really rising figurative sculptors and I think it’s a key piece of his.

“It’s a piece that has great presence and it’s got power and fragility altogether mixed in one, which is really very much what Lawrence Edwards’ work is all about; this kind of tension between male strength and solidity, but then their psychology is very fragile, doubtful, it’s introspective… it’s part of what I think has really resonated with audiences far and wide.”

The purchase of this piece was only possible thanks to the Friends of the Orange Regional Gallery (FORG), a local community organisation that fundraises solely to buy important art for the community collection.

Over the past 30 years, FORG funds have helped purchase more than 30 significant artworks by celebrated local, national and international artists.

In just the last seven years, the 230-member organisation has raised $220,000 and made nine significant contributions to the gallery collection.

“It’s our major function and basically when

Brad sees something and he wants to buy, he comes to us,” FORG President Richard Walker said.

“And, in fact, the Friends’ fundraising, it’s the only funds that are available to Brad when he wants to buy something, the only source of income on hand. He gets contributions made to by artists and bequeaths by people and things like that, but when he sees something that he wants we’re the people he goes to.”

Opening at the Orange Regional Gallery this Saturday, April 29, is The Mermaid’s Tail, an exhibition of large-scale paintings and works on paper by artist Suzanne Archer. With over 35 years spent working in the bush, Archer’s life and work is inextricably linked with the landscape. From her studio in Wedderburn to the South Coast, Archer’s work is inherently personal, creating art that entwines her life and the objects she collects.

Suzanne Archer: The Mermaid’s Tail will be on display at the Orange Regional Gallery until June 25, 2023.

Mount Lindsay Rotary Project Receives Tidy Town Award

In 2022, Cadia teamed up with the three Rotary Groups in Orange to deliver a project at Mount Lindsay Rotary Park.

Over two days, 25 members of the Cadia workforce contributed over 200 hours into transforming the entrance of the park, levelling and building a new retaining wall, improving drainage, mulching and planting over 200 native plants.

The project was acknowledged recently through a presentation of a Tidy Towns Award from Orange Mayor Jason Hamling and Tidy Towns Community Committee Chair Kevin Du y.

Orange Tidy Towns Community Committee Chair Cr Kevin Du y was delighted to present the latest awards.

“The Tidy Towns awards are a fantastic acknowledgement of the important work that’s done in Orange to build our community and create sustainable local infrastructure,” Cr Du y said.

The project was awarded a Highly Commended in the Community Spirit and Inclusion category, section for larger regional cities for recent improvements to Mount Lindsay Rotary Park.

The wonderful Rotary volunteers kept our teams well-fuelled providing catering on both days of the blitz. The project was part of Cadia’s Workforce Engagement program which provides opportunities for the workforce to give back to the local community.

Trishaw gets the elderly out of

It began as a small gesture of kindness in 2012 when Ole Kassow began taking elderly people on bike rides around Copenhagen. Now an international movement, Cycling without Age is getting ready to launch in the Colour City following the arrival of a new trishaw e-bike.

“It’s very comfortable, it’s electricassisted. And the reason this bike was chosen by Cycling Without Age, is because of its comfort and its safety levels and its ability to hold two people in the front box,” Cycling Without Age Orange secretary, Michelle Englart said of the $17,000 e-bike.

“So the idea is to be able to take people with reduced mobility into the outdoors, many people don’t have that opportunity. So, we’ll be taking people from aged care facilities, and potentially some younger people who have limited mobility…. give people the opportunity to be outdoors, to be included in society, to be seen as a normal part of society,” she continued.

“The more we see older people or people with disabilities out and about, just taking part in life, the better it is for the rest of the society as well.”

The local group was formed 12 months ago and has been raising money to purchase a trishaw, trailer and a container

home

and on the road

to store it in. They were able to finally purchase a trishaw a few months ago thanks to a large donation from Cadia and a NSW Government grant.

With the bike now in hand, the group are organising ‘pilot training’ for volunteer raiders and making sure the routes they’ve chosen are safe and suitable for their passengers.

“So we need to do training and assess the risks and those things,” Michelle said. “And we plan to have probably half a dozen di erent routes around Orange so there’s variety and we have quite a merry band of volunteers who will be piloting.”

Cycling Without Age Orange have been

contacting local aged care homes to let them know about the program and to show o their new trishaw to residents.

Michelle said they are still weeks away from being able to take passengers, but she believes it’s a program that will really improve the lives of both the passengers and volunteers.

“I think that just knowing there’s someone out there who’s happy to spend some time with you and to help you to be part of the community… I think it’s going to be nice and make a di erence, give people some joy,” she said.

Cycling Without Age Orange are already fundraising to purchase a second trishaw.

Not just a pub, but a community

“That’s the beauty of this place, it’s quite unique,” says Victoria Hotel owner Paul O’Rourke.

Paul, who has been in the commercial property game for four decades, says he’s not exactly sure what it was that drew him to buy the Victoria Hotel some 30 years ago, making him the latest in a long line of East Orange hotel owners stretching back to John Peisley in 1844.

But it’s not only been a good business decision, he says, but it’s also connected him to a community he is privileged to be a part of.

“They’ve got a social club that’s been going for 60 years! I’ve never struck that anywhere else before. They are all good mates, I know it’s a bit oldfashioned, but we are not just not a big shell operation.. we’re one of the last ‘pub’ pubs around and it’s been great, I’ve got to meet a lot of really good people here,” says Paul, looking around the bar and pointing out people who have been coming there for as long as he has owned the Vic.

“We’re the ‘True Blue’ laid-back pub and we like to maintain that,” says publican Craig Wright.

“It’s got a beating heart and soul, there’s love and care here. Most of these here, they talk and tell you things. They invite you into their life, so you are part of the family,” he says.

“And”, adds Paul, “There would be very few people come here that Craig or the staff would not know their name — and to my mind, that’s a big thing; very, very important.”

“Even if it’s a face we don’t know, we’ll ask, what brings you here? You involve them in the hotel,” continues Craig. “You don’t just serve them beer, it’s about making people feel comfortable being in the hotel and taking an interest in what they’re here for.”

The ‘new’ Victoria Hotel celebrating 100 years!

The Victoria Hotel is celebrating 100 years since the opening of its “new” premises in 1923, although the Vic is a pub that can trace its heritage back to the very earliest days of settlement in Orange.

The oldest hotel in Orange?

The sturdy brick hotel building that stands proudly alongside the railway line in Summer Street today is now more than 100 years old, but did you know the Victoria Hotel is a pub with far longer history than that — three-quarters of a century longer in fact!

The first recorded liquor licence granted for the settlement at Blackman’s Swamp, as Orange was originally known, was in June 1837 for the East India Arms, although little is known about this inn.

But the following year, John Peisley was also granted a liquor licence for his The Coach and Horse hotel, located on the western edge of the town (on the northeastern corner of the Duntryleague golf course).

But six years later, in 1844, John Peisley was first given a licence for a Coach and Horse Hotel, in a premises built by John Moulder on land he owned on Bathurst Road east of the young settlement — the site of the current Victoria Hotel.

In the 1850s Peisley also operated a thrice weekly coach service from his hotel, carrying mail and passengers to and from the goldfields at Ophir.

During the gold rush years, it’s said that as many as 16 beds were laid in one room of the hotel, but Peisley’s inn was a lodging house frequented by respectable and influential people, including Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1851.

In 1953, Peisley sold the Coach and Horses to George McKay, who had previously been the licensee of the Bush Inn at Summer Hill.

We’ve been unable to ascertain exactly what year it was the Coach and Horses was renamed the Victoria Hotel, but it was the name given on the licence to E. Higgens in 1867 and the name that has survived to this day.

In 1908, the Victoria Hotel was one of three pubs in East Orange, although on the other side of the railway Orange boasted 25 establishments. A newspaper report that year on the transfer of the licence to Michael Dower describes the hotel as one of the oldest in the district, but adds that it had been recently rebuilt and renovated.

When Harry Adams took over the Victoria the following year, in 1909, it was the only hotel remaining in East Orange. Adams (described in Orange Leader as “affable ‘Arry”) bought the hotel outright in 1913 and again it is reported the hotel had been recently renovated “inside and out”.

Eight years later though, in 1921, the old wooden hotel is described by one witness as being in a less than ideal state: “The stabling, wood-house, buggy shed, etc. were old and dilapidated… [The Hotel] was no ornament to the town, and, in its present position, no material public inconvenience would be suffered if it closed.”

Demolition of the old Victoria Hotel began in June 1922, during which the

Leader said the rafters were ‘as sound as the day they were put there, which is over 60 years ago.’

Numerous old coins were also uncovered under the old floorboards during the demolition, the oldest of which included an 1817 shilling and a King George IV penny of 1826!

But for patrons, it was “Business as usual,” so read an advertisement, advising that a temporary bar would continue serving wine, spirits and rum.

In the April 13, 1923 edition of the Leader, the writer enthused about the now open new establishment under the heading “A MODERN HOTEL”.

“The general public, and visitors in particular, at once became considerably impressed as they cross the line and view the modernised appearance of the Victoria Hotel. The spot is where the first hotel in the Orange district was built, and, until last year, the well-known hostelry served faithfully for a considerable period the purpose for which it was erected. But with the progress of time, a change had to be made, and the old building has now been replaced with premises which are a distinct credit to the builders and proprietors. Not only are they ornate in appearance, but the appointments throughout are complete in every detail, and cleanliness and comfort strike the visitor at once as being the outstanding features.”

The changing face of the Victoria Hotel

Originally named The Coach and Horses, the hotel has occupied the site on the Bathurst Road since 1844. Renamed the Victoria Hotel sometime prior to 1867, it is thought to be the oldest continuing hotel site in Orange. Construction of the current hotel building began in 1922; the rebuilt Victoria Hotel opened its doors 100 years ago this month in April 1923.

WiN Victoria Sports and Social Club celebrating 60 years

over the dart board. The second order of business was to select a dart team to enter the local competition.

“Darts was very popular,” recalls Ian Smith, who was one of the original 25 members and is now a VSSC Life Member. Not only that, Ian said it was Ma Ryan at the Vic, who pulled his very first beer when he was just 16.

“Back then nearly every hotel had a sports club… The Great Western Hotel had two teams, we had two teams, the Canobolas, Parkview, Metropolitan, Gladstone — everyone played.”

Founded 60 years ago this year, the Victoria Sports and Social Club is the longest-running pub social club in Orange, remaining active to this day while others have come and gone.

It was in July 1963, that a bunch of likeminded individuals got together at the Vic with the idea of forming a social club. First order of business? They requested the then-licensee John Ryan to put a light

Hookey was another of the original VSSC sports, along with cricket and golf, says Ian.

“I played a fair bit of cricket against the Metropolitan Hotel… And then the golf was very popular; you’d go to Blayney to have a game of golf, out to Narromine.”

In the heyday, over 130 members would attend their golf championships at Wentworth, according to Ian.

“The social side it was to have a dinner dance or something like that often as we could,” says Ian. “And sometimes you’d get 60 couples to go to these dinner dances.. originally we had them at the old Cherry Blossom Hall and then we went to the Patmos restaurant, which was Alcorns Star Ballroom then, alongside the Australia theatre.

“And the observation drives and car trials... four or five members of the committee would go and map out a course and we’d end up out at Lake Canobolas or Forrest Reefs or Spring Hill, Wyangla dam and they’d always end with a barbecue… the breathalyzer soon finished that, but they were very good, very entertaining!”

Other regular social activities included euchre nights the annual children’s Christmas picnic, for which Ian has donned the beard and red-an-white suit for more than a decade.

In recent times, members have enjoyed weekend wine trips to Mudgee, Hunter

Valley and Griffith. As well as trips to Sydney to attend the races or NRL matches. There have also been family day trips to Zig Zag Railway and Western Plains Zoo along with ladies-only shopping trips, and fishing and golf trips.

The VSSC still fundraises just as it always has with its weekly meat raffles every Thursday and Friday, with raffles for seafood at Easter and hams at Christmas.

Ian has been selling raffle tickets for the past 60 years and recalls some particularly busy Friday nights in the past.

“In those days, the electricity commission, Orange City Council, the railway all got their checks and cashed the checks over the bar here!” he exclaims, describing how it could be shoulder-to-shoulder in the (then much smaller) public bar.

With 85 members the VSSC is still going strong, thanks to their many volunteers and the support of Vicotria Hotel owner Paul O’Rourke and licensee Craig Wright.

Three members of Pinnacle Dragon Boat Club recently attended the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Festival held at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge, New Zealand.

The competition is usually held every fourth year, however like so many other events was delayed due to the COVID pandemic.

Pinnacle Dragons Ros Kemp, Sharon Cooper and Pearl Butcher joined 2,300 other paddlers from over 30 countries to compete in the International Participatory Festival.

The o cial competition was held over two days, however it was a week of activities with practice sessions, team

gatherings, street parades and congress taking place.

There were approximately 15 Australian teams including Dragons Abreast Australia’s three combined teams — Hope, Inspiration and Spirit — made up of members from all over Australia. Teams also attended from Queensland, Victoria and the ACT.

Australia’s contingent of paddlers was second in size only to the USA who had over 20 teams at the competition.

Our local paddlers have been speculating as they eagerly wait for the announcement of the venue for the 2026 International Breast Cancer Paddlers Participatory Festival.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE!

Ronald McDonald House in Orange is celebrating its 8th birthday!

Over the weekend we took time out to thank and present certificates of appreciation to the many volunteers who assist Rebecca, Bronwyn and their team help kids needing medical treatment and their families, in what can be an enormously stressful and difficult time.

I was honoured to meet Henry, who was born at 24 weeks, 5 days. He was so small that his soft lamb toy was larger than he was! Henry and his Mum, Lou and Dad, Gary spent months in hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses (including Orange). Today Henry is a lively young lad who is loving life on the family farm!

It was also terrific to catch up with the Rapid Relief Team who are also unsung heroes of our region. During the Black Summer bushfires they served thousands of meals to firies and even rigged up a water tank for easy fill ups. At Eugowra they got through the waters to feed the many residents at the Showground who otherwise would have had no food on that Monday night of the tragedy. And they were there again feeding the firies out at Hill End during the recent emergency as well.

ORANGE HELICOPTERS OPEN NEW HANGAR

A hearty congratulations to the Brus family and Orange Helicopters on the official opening of their new hangar at Orange airport today!

Happy Birthday Ronald McDonald House, Orange! And a heartfelt thanks to all of the staff, volunteers and board for making life better for so many people in our region, state and country.

From fighting fires and ag work to helping flood hit Eugowra, Dean and his team make an enormous contribution to our region. It was an honour to be a part of this special day!

HAY DRIVE UPDATE: THANK YOU EVERYONE!

The response to our Hill End Hay Drive has been incredible. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated hay or money.

As a result of this extraordinary community effort, we now have enough hay and feed to get our bushfire-hit farmers through. Hay that has already been pledged will still be needed, but we won’t need any further supplies.

It says a lot about our region that when the chips are down, our generous community members step up to help get each other through.

VALE MAX HAZELTON

The news of the passing of a aviation trailblazer, Max Hazelton AM OB, is extraordinarily sad for our region.

Max was a pioneer in bringing badly needed air services to the regions.

Max and his wife Laurel founded Hazelton Airlines, which was to become part of Ansett Australia, and then Regional Express (Rex). Based in Cudal, it was truly a country airline.

He had an adventurous spirit. He famously crashed a plane in rugged bushland around the Coxs River in 1954 and miraculously emerged from the bush almost a week later.

The famous “lasso landing” where Max freed the landing gear of a moving/landing plane using a rope held between two moving cars on the runway at Orange is the stuff of legend.

There were many other adventures in a life lived extraordinarily well.

Hay donated to farmers in the Hill End region thanks to a $19,000 donation by Bathurst RSL Club.

Special thanks to Pyramul farmer Penny Hundy for a huge co-ordination effort in the Hill End area, as well as Lion Anne Jones (Geurie Lions) and our local Lions Clubs for their invaluable assistance and disaster relief expertise.

In bringing air services to the bush, he helped set the regions up for the growth they enjoy today. When folks needed help getting to medical assistance, he was there as well. He was a warm-hearted, generous man with a wonderfully quirky sense of humour. The photo of him riding his bicycle backwards on a local airfield always made me smile.

Max was a one-off. An outside of the box thinker who dreamt big and made those dreams come true. He was a great Australian. Max was 95 years old.

Our sincere condolences to Laurel and Max’s family and friends.

triumphs in F.O.O.D. Week treat challenge

“Why do we serve all these cakes named for European royalty?” was the question Rhonda Doyle asked herself while serving up a Queen Victoria Sponge and Apple Charlotte at an International Women’s Day function last month.

This thought was quickly followed up with an idea and a F.O.O.D. Week challenge to the Orange community. “Why don’t we create our own!” Rhonda thought, contacting Orange City Life to publicise her challenge for local cooks to create a tasty two-bite morsel (savoury or sweet) inspired by — and named after — a woman who has inspired them in some way.

Rhonda, who founded the very first F.O.O.D Week here in Orange, saw the challenge as a way to get the community involved and celebrate the amazing local produce on our doorstep.

“We are pleased to announce that the judges independently and unanimously agreed on the winner,” Rhonda said, naming Denise Watts and her recipe for “Lotti-Jenni-Scotti” Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti (using local hazelnuts).

Recipe submissions included everything from raspberry friands, a date slice and an apple tart with red wine glaze to onion bhaji, curried morsel, potato scallop, and a turkey and bacon sausage roll.

“Other entries were of a similar standard, both savoury and sweet morsels, and each and every one of them will be added to my repertoire,” Rhonda said, adding that she plans to run the competition again at F.O.O.D. Week 2024.

For her submission, Denise has won a $120 voucher to dine at Birdie Noshery & Drinks Est. plus a bottle of Bloodwood wine.

“This competition has given me the opportunity to reflect on a lot of my friends who are called Jenny and how many recipes we have shared over as many as 50 years!” Denise said in her submission.

“This recipe is a family favourite that I often make. It’s delicious with a quiet mid-morning co ee or served with a sticky wine or with a dessert such as a ogato!”

And Denise has kindly agreed to share her “Lotti-Jenni-Scotti”

Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti recipe with OC Life readers.

“Lotti-Jenni-Scotti”

220g plain flour

75g best quality dark cocoa powder

½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

½ tsp ground white pepper

250g caster sugar

200g roasted local hazelnuts

2 whole eggs, plus one egg white

Zest of one orange

1 vanilla bean, split

To do:

Preheat oven to 175 degrees.

Sift flour, cocoa and baking powder into a bowl. Add salt and pepper, caster sugar and hazelnuts.

Lightly beat eggs and egg white, adding zest and vanilla bean seeds as you go.

Combine dry and wet ingredients either by hand or in a mixer. You will need to do a little gentle kneading to pull the mixture together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and form into a long, flattened log. Transfer to a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 35-40 minutes.

When cooked, the log should be firm. Remove and allow to cool. Then using a sharp knife cut thin slices on the diagonal and arrange on a baking tray. Return to a very slow oven (75 – 80 C) to crisp. Biscotti will keep for some time in airtight containers.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent BOWL CUTS AND WEAPONS TRAINING

At the time of writing, the kids are almost back at school. After only eleventy billion weeks of holidays which, in a special form of torture for parents, somehow coincided with the release of the Paw Patrol movie on Netflix. But still, holidays survived… Much like those lovable pups who get in their special vehicles to drive parents around the world freaking insane, my children also spent the last week of the holidays kicking it up a gear.

“I give up!” Miss Eight announces while browsing eBay. I ask what she’s trying to buy. “Archery sets for my frog army, but they don’t seem to make bows small enough,” she says with a dejected sigh. Apparently, her school holiday boot camp for the backyard frogs has progressed to weapons training. While I’m desperate to find out exactly how she’s planning on teaching them to shoot arrows, I’m also pretty sure I don’t actually want to know the answer.

“Can we get pet dingoes?” she asks. Ignoring her question, I escape to stalk Chris Hemsworth on Instagram and 14-year-old me quickly joins 43-year-old me in losing our freaking minds when we see a video of him surfing with Kelly Slater! I try to explain the importance of this historical event to my unappreciative children but they apparently have no taste in men or respect for my past.

“Ew! That Slater guy is old and gross mum!”

Unfortunately, I keep scrolling and see my friends and other school parents posting blatant lies like, “I’m going to miss my kids so much! #bestholidaysever” and “Uniforms bought, zucchini slice baked and haircuts done! #backtoschoolprepismyjam”.

As I start to shame spiral I book Miss Eight in for a haircut and send the girls out to the veggie patch to collect one of our 7,000 ripe zucchinis to make a slice.

Taking over the cooking Miss 14 asks if this is dinner, pointing out that it’s currently 5.45pm and there doesn’t seem to be any other food being prepared.

“There are leftovers from last night’s Chinese… so we’ll have both!” I improvise.

“Sure, but which one are you photographing for Instagram?” she responds. #homegrownzucchinislice. Obviously.

The next day we pull up at the hairdresser and Miss 14 o ers to take her sister while I squeeze in 30 minutes of work in the car. I gratefully accept, but am disarmed and unprepared for the next question.

“Are we going out for an ice cream treat afterwards?”

Now, as a survivor of “Mum’s bowl cuts” of the 1980s, I can honestly say that these kids have no concept of how lucky they are. The $30 trim IS THE TREAT! But alas, until you’ve been sat in a chair in your lime green kitchen in 1987 while your Mum placed the family mixing/popcorn/ vomit bowl on top of your head and used “the good scissors” to hack away at any hair that was visible while chatting to her friend Elaine about how wonderful Jazzercise is, you will never appreciate a half hour with Rose at Tangled. And that’s probably a good thing.

So I buy them ice cream and take it to the park, let them just be kids for a little longer and soak up every last bit of school holiday joy while I can.

#bestholidaysever

Orange get ready for the biggest Wiggliest show yet!

Adored by generations of children the world over, the Wiggles are returning to Orange for their brand new ‘Hello!

We’re the Wiggles Live in Concert Tour’ this Saturday, April 29.

Tickets for the first two Orange shows sold out like “hot potatoes” so the group decided to announce a third and final show — and there’s still tickets available!

This Saturday, at 2.30pm children can get their “wiggle” on at the Orange Function Centre, while parents can bob along to the classic songs that’ll take them back to their own childhood.

Anthony, Tsehay, Simon, Lachy, Caterina, Lucia and John will be joined on stage by all your favourite Wiggly characters including Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, Shirley Shawn the Unicorn and Bok the Hand Puppet!

Orange City Life was lucky enough to be able to catch up with Purple Wiggle himself, Lachy Gillespie, to chat about their brand-new show.

Believe it or not, Lachy has now been wearing the purple Wiggle jersey for 10 years!

“I only knew that because heaps of the Wiggles fans online posted congratulations on the ten years,” Lachy says with a laugh.

A dream job for many, Lachy certainly had to put in the hard yards for his role in the Wiggles.

“I studied musical theatre and then I got an audition for the Dorothy the Dinosaur show about 13 years ago, which was their kind of little character show that they took around while the Wiggles themselves were in other parts of the world. I did that for four years,” Lachy recalls.

“I finally got to meet the guys in 2012, just before they did their big ‘Farewell to the

World’ tour, which I was lucky enough to go on… when the original guys retired I got asked to be the new Purple Wiggle.”

Reinventing themselves for a new generation of kids, the Wiggles have recently welcomed a number of new members and Lachy is excited for everyone to come and witness what he believes is the best show he’s been involved in.

“It’s been a fantastic tour. It’s kind of the biggest, and I think, one of the best shows we’ve ever taken out,” he says.

Lachy speaks fondly of past visits to Orange and says the group has many great memories in our city.

“We’ve been to Orange a lot of times but this is the first time they’ll get to see the seven, out of eight Wiggles out now, and there’s so much to see in the show!”

While the group’s songs are aimed at entertaining children, Lachy says so many

parents in the crowd now have grown up listening to the Wiggles and really enjoy the trip down memory lane.

“The children and the parents are just loving the show. It probably takes the parents by surprise a bit because it’s so di erent but so wonderful. There’s so much energy,” he says.

“It’s a very interactive show, it’s something we really thrive on. We really cater to the audience. It’s always interactive, always in the moment.

“If you want to bring signs, people can make signs and we’ll read them out during the show and we can’t wait to see everybody there!”

So grab your little ones, hop in the Big Red Car and don’t miss out on a “Wiggly” show to remember!

Becoming Eliza on stage this Saturday

In 2016, Anna O’Byrne won the role of a lifetime when she was hand-picked by Dame Julie Andrews to play Eliza in the 60th Anniversary production of ‘My Fair Lady’, which played at the Sydney Opera House.

In Becoming Eliza, Anna O’Byrne reflects on her unique experience and shares stories about working intimately with an internationally adored icon, and what it is to share a role, created sixty years apart as well as the lessons she learned from both Dame Julie and Eliza.

This acclaimed concert evening features iconic songs from beloved musicals on stage and screen including ‘Camelot’, ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Victor/Victoria’ and, of course, ‘My Fair Lady’.

See Becoming Eliza at the Orange Civic Theatre this Saturday, April 29. Book your tickets at Ticketek or call 63938111.

The Alphabet of Awesome Science

Join professors Lexi Con and Noel Edge (the Word Nerd and the Science Freak) at the Orange Civic Theatre on Monday, May 29 for a thrilling voyage through the alphabet.

Professor Lexi Con has curated a curious collection of her favourite words (one for every letter of the alphabet) with each word providing Professor Noel Edge with an inspirational jumpingo point for 26 quirky scientific demonstrations – that squish and squirt, float and fly, erupt and explode.

Together, this dad-joke quipping, prank-pulling pair of polished professors strut their stu in a performance that’s equal parts explosive, messy, spectacular, hilarious, fascinating and gross.

And if things weren’t exciting enough, every show is completely di erent, with audiences determining the order in which the letters are revealed and explored. Plus, did we mention, this is a race? The plucky pair of professors have just 52 minutes to complete their alphabetical, scientifical countdown. That’s just two minutes per experiment!

Will they make it in time?

Find out at the Orange Civic Theatre at 6pm Monday, May 29. Tickets at Ticketek or call 63938111.

Roald Dahl’s The Twits on stage in May

Roald Dahl’s gruesome twosome The Twits are ready to delight and disgust, in equal measure, at the Orange Civic Theatre on Saturday, May 6.

Mr and Mrs Twit are the nastiest couple you could ever hope (not) to meet.

Both are on a quest to be meaner than the other – but, is there someone out there who can out-twit the Twits?

Full of trickery and wickedly-funny pranks, Dahl’s adored classic encourages us to treat others with love and care and proves that if you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams.

You’ve read the book – it’s time to experience this family classic from the wacky mind of the world’s No. 1 Storyteller live on stage. You won’t believe your (glass) eyes!

Suitable for ages 5 to 105 years, but be warned there’s loud music and sound e ects, strobe lighting, haze and two very nasty individuals.

See The Twits at the Orange Civic Theatre Saturday, May 6 at 1pm. Book your tickets at Ticketek or call 6393 8111.

Orange Property MARKET

All four bedrooms are a good size and include built-ins, perfect for a growing family, while the upstairs parents’ retreat is sure to impress with its walk-in robe, ensuite and balcony where you can take in the peaceful surroundings.

Downstairs, you’ll find three large living areas and a modern kitchen, with split-system air-conditioning and a wood heater to keep you comfortable all year round.

LJ Hooker Orange principal Scott Munro believes this is a perfect home for a young family looking to get into the market.

“If you’re a first home buyer, or you’re struggling to buy a

property in Orange for $600,000 or $700,000 this is a great opportunity to get a great family home in a quiet little town within striking distance of Molong, Wellington and Orange,” Scott said.

“It’s a good little family home on a very good block. It has got a handy tool shed at the back, it’s got ample water, town water and a tank, and it is very a ordable.

“For somebody in that first homeowner bracket, you get a lot of value out of this property.”

Outside, Scott said there is a great alfresco entertaining area and plenty of shade from established plantings.

And for those into fishing or water sports, it’s just a short drive to the Mookerawa State Recreation area and Lake Burrendong.

“And we must sell, this is a genuine sale,” Scott said. “It’s well within a first homeowner’s budget, so ring me and come and have a good look at it — it is very good value.”

HOME COOKING with RUBEN LOPEZ

Homemade

Granola

It is well known that the first meal of the day is super important. Your body has been resting for a number of hours and needs to add some fuel to the machine in order to keep going. Breakfast is the moment when you say to your body what to expect for the day.

Each culture has a different approach to breakfast, offering either savoury or sweet options. Here in Australia, we have a couple of cultural offerings that remind us who we are like the smell of vegemite toast (although we could write about how to spread it properly and how much to use), a bowl full of Weet-Bix and the bacon and egg roll that triggers many Australians while they wait for a takeaway coffee.

You know? I’ve worked for many, many years in different cafes in Sydney and I’ve always found it fascinating the massive differences in morning habits we all have. Here we eat always on the go instead of sitting calmly; carrying takeaway drinks instead of making them at home. And the incredible amount of money we spend on things that, honestly, we can do easily at home.

I’ve been very lucky to work in all types of businesses, from really trendy cafes where their offering was completely vegetarian to corner stores where the Aussie classics ruled. As a chef creating my own menus, I used to offer different points of view about what to eat for brekkie and lunch, trying to use local ingredients that were in season. Many of you know me from my time in East Orange where we did such a good job pushing new ways of having breakfast, new flavours, and new dishes.

METHOD TO MAKE GRANOLA:

It was the first time that I started introducing Spanish recipes to Orange, using many of the local products that expensive restaurants were using at that moment for dinner service. We did such a good job that not just our local customers appreciated it, but we also got the attention of many visitors who came to town and gave us amazing reviews. We got great local write-ups, and even SBS came to interview me for the famous ‘pumpkin toast’ I created full of local ingredients like hummus, roasted pumpkin, caramelised balsamic, local hazelnuts, etc. Simply delicious!

However, one of the things a lot of people always ask me is, what is the difference between a muesli and a granola? Well, the answer to that is very simple: muesli is basically a raw mixture of oats, nuts and seeds and fruit. While granola is baked, so that it gets colour and becomes sweeter and crunchy.

There are many, many ways of doing so, depending on what you use to coat your muesli with. Some people prefer to use maple syrup, others honey. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter, it’s totally up to you and your likes or dislikes.

Today’s recipe is one of those times when there is not an exact list of ingredients. I’ll leave it up to you to follow this basic formula: oats, seeds, nuts, flakes and dry fruits.

1. Heat oven to 150C (moderate oven). Mix oats, seeds, nuts and flakes with maple syrup or honey in a large bowl. Stir everything well (tip: leave coconut flakes and dried fruits out for now).

2. Tip the granola mix onto two baking sheets and spread evenly. Bake for 15 mins, then mix in the coconut flakes and dried fruit if you are using some, and bake for 10-15 mins more. Remove and scrape onto a flat tray to cool.

3. Serve it with cold milk or yoghurt, and fresh fruit with different types of acidity, texture, etc.

Remember! Your homemade granola can be stored in an airtight container for up to a month.

The Hon. Dominic Perrottet MP Premier of NSW GPO 5341 Sydney, NSW 2000

Dear Dr Chalmers, There’s a crisis in our country you can fix in your first budget, at no extra cost.

With the stroke of a pen you could help secure the future of critical regional news services, using money already allocated in the budget.

By email: media@premier.nsw.gov.au

All you need to do is allocate a fairer percentage of the federal government’s advertising budget to local and regional news services, rather than spending almost all of it with corporate capital city media and foreign-owned digital platforms (which don’t produce any content or employ any journalists).

Michelle Rowlands announced a campaign promise of $15m of costs that we faced at the time. Whilst this is welcomed by structural issues we face.

Dear Premier Perrottet

This can be achieved by simply adopting the Victorian Govt policy that mandates a weekly full page government advertisement in every regional and community paper.

Local and regional newspapers connect more than 80% of the country, but they get almost 0% of the government advertising spend.

the Premier of Victoria (see attached) with a policy that full page advertisement in every regional paper every week

In an era where false news spreads faster on social media than the truth does, trusted local news services reach more regional Australians than any other medium. And unlike other media, every government dollar spent with a local newspaper is also an investment in regional journalism jobs.

By way of introduction, I am the Managing Director of Australian Community independent regional publisher. ACM has over 140 titles around the country. newspapers like the Newcastle Herald, Illawarra Mercury, Wagga Daily Advertiser Leader. Additionally, we publish 47 weekly titles from the far south in Batemans also have the St.George and Sutherlands Leaders in our stable of papers. A recent parliamentary inquiry recommended that a minimum of 20% of government print advertising should be placed with regional news services. A recent study conducted by Deakin University recommended the same thing. In fact, the Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, has been advocating for more regional newspaper advertising for many years.

This shouldn’t be controversial.

A more meaningful solution has been enacted by the Premier of Victoria guarantees that the Vic state government will buy a full page advertisement in of the year.

We believe a similar policy could be an election promise for NSW Labor that does - provides certainty for regional publishers and the jobs they support - provides the NSW Government with a valuable communications tool - moves away from the need for government grants.

We know there may be bigger budget issues, but this small policy change would be a simple and fair solution to a growing problem for regional Australia. But when his 2-year-old daughter Jane was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, he realised the need for simple visual material to entertain and inform similarly a ected children; books that explain that they are not alone in their struggle.

Since then, Angus has gone on to write many books on everything related to pediatric oncology. His works will now continue to inform, educate and delight young cancer su erers here in Orange, thanks to the Auxiliary Café. Angus also makes all his books free to download as e-books from his website: idrawchildhoodcancer.com

THE robus APRIL/MAYNOTES with Keith Rawsthorne

The poet, C.J. Dennis said, “life mooches on,” but there’s plenty going on in Probus. October has been named Senior’s Month with Sunday, October 1 being Probus Day. Now is the time to think and plan some activities to mark this day; we have much to celebrate.

This lovely autumn weather brought out a good attendance at the April meeting, with John Southwell welcomed to the Management Committee. The Auditor’s Report shows we are in good shape.

Next activity is the trip to Bathurst Railway Museum on Wednesday, May 10, so get your car pool transport organised at this meeting; it’s too far to walk. $8 entry, counter lunch available nearby, and $4 to see Ben Chifley’s

A‘hearty’ donation for Orange Family Support

Mining technology business, The Weir Group PLC are ensuring hearts stay healthy in our local community.

On Tuesday, April 18 Weir Group sta , Jordan Anderson and Darwin Taylor delivered a donated Philips Heartstart AED defibrillator to the local family support service, Orange Family Support.

The local not-for-profit business is a free and confidential service to anyone with dependent children in the community. They o er advocacy, referrals, parenting

programs, information about services and support to families who may be isolated or lack support.

Orange Family Support Manager, Tania Martin extended her gratitude to Weir for their kind donation.

“I’d just like to thank Jordan and Darwin for their kind donation to Orange Family Support.”

“We’re just happy to be supporting a local community, just like this one,” Darwin Taylor said in response.

restored house close by.

The Coach trip to Dubbo for the Royal Flying Doctor Base is set down for Wednesday, June 14. Fare is $55, or less if we fill the bus; so, invite your friends.

The weather delayed croquet. It is planned for Sunday, May 14 with morning tea and equipment available, and instructions for learners.

Guest speaker this month was Liz Edwards, a local Historian and author, having written

The Wearing of the Green, (Dalton history), Weapons to White Goods and more.

Liz showed many old photos which had been enhanced to perfection and spoke of notable persons. Brass Bands were popular in Orange in the early 20th century.

Dr Colvin was highly regarded in Orange, but also served as Doctor in WW2 in France, was wounded, recovered in London, practised medicine for wounded soldiers there and particularly wrote to their families back home. Our speaker next meeting will be Pharmacist Kim Denham who will discuss the use of medications, especially safety.

August will see Peter Ringbauer from Legal Aid and then Dr Steve Peterson who will discuss rehabilitation.

Point to ponder, “God promised men that good obedient wives would be found in all corners of the World. Then He made the world round, and is still laughing!”

Enjoy your Probus!

OneDay, Orange’s annual Christian women’s conference, returns to a full-day format in 2023 with guest speaker Susan Ravehall and at a new venue, the new Orange Evangelical Church building in Cottonwood Way.

Taking place on May 20, 2023, OneDay is an interdenominational conference s run by a committee of women from various local churches in Molong and Orange.

“So it’s an event organised by, and especially for, women of all Christian faith traditions,” committee member Sarah Passer said.

“The one thing that binds us together is a desire to learn more about the teachings of the Christian bible. We enjoy a day with a guest speaker who teaches us from the Bible, plus singing Christian music, enjoying good food, prayer time, book reviews and being together!”

Founded in 1997 from a desire to o er a Christian event, especially for regional women, the conference now draws women from all over NSW and beyond.

“It’s a wonderful day of friendship and worship, and many women travel long distances to join in,” Sarah said.

“We have had as few as 40 women attend in the early days and as many as 450 in the years before Covid.”

The day is suitable for girls and women from high school

age up, and although there is no crèche operating, mums with young babies are very welcome.

This year’s guest speaker, Susan Ravenhall, is originally from Sydney, but had an 11-year stint in Young before making a seachange to Newcastle five years ago.

Susan — who has three children, a cat and two cute bunnies — ministers alongside her husband at Newcastle and Mayfield Presbyterian churches. She loves teaching SRE in primary schools, reading the Bible with women and dabbling in art.

Susan has loved thinking long and hard about the Lord’s Prayer - the how, what and why of prayer. – and she is looking forward to sharing this at OneDay 2023.

Book now for the OneDay women’s conference on Saturday, May 20 at the Orange Evangelical Church Building 2, Cottonwood Way, Orange.

Tickets are $52 and include morning tea and lunch. Mums & Bubs tickets are also available

Registration for 2023 will end around May 10, but places are limited and women are encouraged to register early by visiting www.onedaycwc.org.au

TIME WARP with ORANGE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Mystery hole in Autumn Street

There was a bit of excitement for Margaret Rodowicz, 11, and Margaret I and, 10, as they made their way to school along Autumn Street one day in April 1958.

A large hole had appeared overnight in the street between March and Dalton streets following recent road-works. The street had collapsed above sewerage pipes put in six months previously and the hole had filled with water.

Lachlan Constructions promised the hole would be filled in soon.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER, REMEMBER

Each Anzac Day we are encouraged to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country. We remember that the freedom we enjoy in Australia came at a cost. Lives were shed in war. Men and women sacrificed themselves for the good of others.

We remember and hope that we won’t have to go through war again. We know that those who died helped save Australia then, but not necessarily forever. Our world is unstable. How can we look to the future with confidence?

The Bible tells us that God has the future in hand. There will be wars and rumours of wars but God made a once for all sacrifice through the death of his Son, Jesus Christ. He did this not to guarantee peace in this nation but peace with himself.

Aussies know and celebrate the history of the Anzacs, but it is remembering what God has done — one man, one death, one purpose — that brings peace for eternity.

THUMBS UP to Newbridge Pub. My daughter and I arrived there at 1:45pm on Easter Saturday - 15 minutes before the kitchen was about to close. They happily served us, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch. The sta were really lovely, and service was so fast.

A HUGE THUMBS DOWN to the inconsiderate, irresponsible dog owners who have no control over or care of their dogs. Case in question is a dog in the Mullion Creek community that slaughtered seven Alpacas and mauled two in-lamb ewes, one of which had to be put down, over two nights during the Easter weekend. Whether you are away or at home you are responsible for the behaviour of your dog.

THUMBS DOWN to the rude customer who verbally abused a checkout operator at Coles over the wait. Have some respect for these people, they are doing their best.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange Council for not removing the 60km speed limit due to “Roadworks” at the entry to the Southern distributor road from near Dairy Creek. It has been a very long time since the new road opened and the grass has grown over the former road. Why has it not been removed?

THUMBS UP to Graeme at Orange Jax Tyres for always going above and beyond. Your fantastic customer service is appreciated!

THUMBS UP to our great Orange Regional Airport, but Thumbs down to the shocking state (spills) of the carpets in both the arrival and departure areas. Council, if cleaning this up is too costly, then perhaps replacing the flooring with a more durable covering might be the answer. Tourism is very important to our city and so are first impressions. Don’t wait for a tourist to bring this to your attention.

THUMBS UP to Sandra at Barrett and Smith Pathology for her excellent customer service towards her patients. She has a great work ethic and is always cheerful and happy when I have been in there. Great work Sandra, very appreciative of your service.

THUMBS UP to the Alpine Country Meat Butchery for their kind donation to Orange Family Support Grandparent Group barbecue, it is very much appreciated.

THUMBS UP the OC Life story on Gwyn and Helen Mulholland. Gwyn was too modest to say that not only was he and his father into motorsports, but his dad was also in the Battle of Britain flying Spitfires, surviving the war to raise a family.

THUMBS UP and big thanks to Steve and Bardi Mannix for all that they do for the horse community in Orange.

THUMBS DOWN to the person complaining about the dog being o the lead at the Botanical Gardens. Surely there are bigger problems.

A BIG THUMBS UP to Owen at O ceworks Orange Photo Print Service for helping two newbies copy printed photos out. A very patient and helpful worker. A great asset to the store.

A BIG THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for keeping alive the memory of aviation legend, Max Hazelton, with the mural at Orange City Airport. Special thanks must go to Mayor and Airport Manager, Tim Mooney.

THUMBS UP to all involved in the organisation of Country on the Green at Orange City Bowling Club last weekend! What a fantastic night of entertainment! Bigger thumbs up if live entertainment becomes more regular!
