T

he chilly winds of fall are about to blow, and there’s no better way to spend a brisk evening than curled up on your mom’s sofa with a dirty thirty cup of hot chocolate watching new episodes of your favorite TV shows. We’ve given you a quick rundown here of what to expect from some of your choice picks. American Horror Story FX The eerie and grotesque anthology series from Ryan Murphy (Glee) moves into the hospitality industry, with Hotel, the newest season. Lady Gaga will star as the evil owner of the Hotel Cortez, while Wes Bentley plays a detective investigating a serial killer. Series staple Jessica Lange won’t be present, but others such as Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, and Chloe Sevigny are checking in. 6 PULSE

THE WALKING DEAD

Arrow The CW The flagship of the CW’s DC superhero series (which include The Flash) returns for a fourth season. The show follows billionaire vigilante Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as he continues his war against crime. Brooklyn Nine-Nine Fox A heavily-promoted comedy that actually delivered on its promised laughs, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has become appointment viewing (or at least mandatory DVRing) for sitcom fans. The third season begins with detectives Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) dealing with having finally started a romance, while the station comes under new management after stern but beloved Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) was forced into an unwanted promotion.

Empire Fox Few network shows landed with the impact that Empire did in January, quickly climbing to the top of the ratings and getting a near-instant renewal. The second season debuts with music mogul Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) in prison, still vying for power over his company and family against ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson). Fargo FX The first season of Fargo, an adaptation of the beloved 1996 Coen Brothers film, was one of 2014’s great small screen pleasures, a thriller with a wicked sense of humor, great performances and shocking violence. The second season turns back the clock to 1979, where Minnesota State Trooper Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson) investigates a series of crimes. A star-studded cast includes Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst, Jean Smart, Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell.

Heroes Reborn NBC In 2006, Heroes was major success, but subsequent years saw a decline in quality and viewership that lead to a quiet cancellation. Now, NBC rolls the dice with a resurrection, which sees the return of old favorites such as Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) and Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) in the aftermath of a devastating event. Homeland Showtime After stumbling with a weak third season, Showtime’s terrorism thriller roared back to life with an astoundingly suspenseful fourth year. The upcoming fifth season jumps forward two years, with bipolar intelligence officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) working for a private firm in Berlin where she gets pulled back into international intrigue.

Tom Cruise’s character is nowhere to be found, but Dash finds himself teaming up with a detective (Meagan Good) to stop the bad guys before they do bad things. The Muppets ABC After two major films brought the Muppets back into the public consciousness, ABC gives the furry creatures another small-screen home. This incarnation is in mockumentary form a la The Office.

NCIS CBS On a comfortable perch at the top of the ratings charts is NCIS, the most popular scripted show on TV. The father of two spinoffs (Los Angeles and New Orleans), the original enters its 13th season of following the cases of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). The Walking Dead AMC Cable TV’s all-time smash hit returns just in time for Halloween. This season of the zombie apocalypse drama sees Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group continue to adjust to life in Alexandria, a walled community partially safe from the undead. Its spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, debuted to stellar ratings but tepid reviews.

R

ocksteady’s Arkham series of Batman games has been an indisputable triumph. With Batman: Arkham Knight, it ends with a thrilling bang that ties the story together while delivering some of the best gameplay and story yet. Moment after moment, there’s something impressive and immersive enough to give even casual Batman fans chills. The Arkham Knight, a new villain designed for the game, is Batman militarized, equipped with weapons designed to kill instead of subdue, commanding a small army of mercenaries and boasting of an insider’s knowledge of how the Dark Knight works. This sets up a great trio of adversaries: the mysterious Arkham Knight; the Joker, now dead and living as a hallucination in Batman’s psyche; and Scarecrow, who holds Gotham City hostage with a fear-inspiring gas. There’s also a who’s who of Batman characters, including Commissioner Gordon, Catwoman, Robin, Poison Ivy, the Riddler and the Penguin. The combat has been tweaked to make Batman’s many special moves easier than ever. The seamless controls make it a

breeze for the player to handle dozens of opponents at once. At times, Arkham Knight becomes a top-notch stealth experience. Batman can soak up a lot of punches but only a few bullets, so quietness around thugs is key. At times the suspense becomes nearunbearable. Gotham City is an open world, with various missions and tasks popping up as things progress. The player can focus on the central story line, but it’s hard to resist the other challenges that come your way like stopping Two-Face, tracking down a serial killer or freeing hostages from the clutches of the Arkham Knight. You’ll be rewarded with experience points that allow upgrades to Batman’s repertoire of fighting moves and gadgets, making these missions all but essential to those playing on harder difficulties. There’s a puzzling misstep in the form of the Batmobile. It’s a vital piece of iconography but not one that proves necessary to a great Batman game. Rocksteady’s sin here isn’t that the

Batmobile is superfluous, it’s that the game makes it an integral part of the experience, repeatedly requiring the player to pass lengthy stages confined to the vehicle’s cabin. When this happens, an astounding beat-’em-up becomes a passable vehicle shooter, one that’s more often endured than enjoyed. It’s a shame to see such a landmark series conclude, but what a ride it’s been. If this is the end, I’m praying for a reboot.

Persona 4 gets its groove on

TREAT youRsElf To A holidAy gifT EARly!

ALAN SIMMER | PULSE WRITER

I

’m not really sure why the characters from Persona 4, a life sim/RPG hybrid from 2008 that’s spawned two fighting game spinoffs, are starring in a dancing rhythm game. But I’m not complaining. Yu, Rise and the rest of the investigation team have some pretty sweet moves, and they kick it to some enjoyable songs.

I’ll admit the inputs don’t sync up where I would expect. If you’re pressing the buttons to the beat — as you should! — the indicators, to me, seem to be on the front edge of the “now now now” circles, rather than centered inside them. Not the choice I’d have made, but once you’re aware, it’s easy enough to adjust to.

The story of Persona 4: Dancing All Night stands alone, so if you like rhythm games but have no idea what a capital-P Persona is, you can jump right in and try to solve the mystery behind the world of the Midnight Stage. Or ignore Story Mode entirely and just do the songs in Free Dance Mode — all the dancing, none of the chatter!

The other downer is this game seems better suited for the 3DS and its dual screens. There’s so much going on with the dancing that it can be hard to notice the next moves you’re supposed to input. I suspect that’s meant to be part of the challenge, of course, but a clean command interface on the bottom with pure dance madness on the top seems like another good option.

There aren’t any earth-shattering inputs here: Hit one or more of six buttons, sometimes holding and releasing, with a control stick nudge thrown in every now and again. It’s simple, yet effective, wisely avoiding the touchscreen and touchpad altogether.

But the game we have is on the Vita, and it makes the most of its controls and graphical abilities. It’s another fun entry in the ever-moreconvoluted Persona series, and it might ease the pain of Persona 5 getting delayed to 2016. Until then, shake your groove thing.

he Cedar Valley rock scene, long dominated by cover groups, seems to be getting more populated with versatile original bands. The newest on the scene is Stereowide, whose debut EP is set for release this month. This new band features Colin Moore on vocals, Zach Duckworth on guitar, Drew Persson on bass and John Fitzpatrick on drums. Their four-song, self-titled release was recorded at Catamount Studios in Cedar Falls. Like any Catamount release, its recording is glossy, balanced, clear and well-layered. The quality recording lets the energy of the songs shine. The album is full of punch and ambition and is crammed with effects, showing this group has the talent

and tools to find a place of their own in the Iowa music scene and beyond.

sings. Memento is an equally energetic haveto-let-go-of-you rock song.

Effects-laden guitar riffs, clear drums and a fuzzy bass give the album a quintessential modern rock sound with some retro flavor. The songs are high-energy, with Moore belting out “gosh, it’s good to be alive” lyrics that are catchy, though not as deep as the stacked sounds in each song.

The slightly more reflective Drop It still brings a ton of screaming and ringing guitar effects. Keep Flying, with overdrive, a reverbladen guitar riff intro and punchy lyric delivery, is more than a little reminiscent of the Killers’ megahit Mr. Brightside. Keep Flying conveys a manic train of thought with a fight-to-the-last attitude.

The band started as an instrumental project. Moore joined later, writing lyrics to the songs. Objects in Motion is a short, danceable rock anthem with grabbing guitar licks. It has no particular message other than “we’re awesome, dancing is fun,” basically. “We could be unstoppable,” Moore

Absent are angst-riddled lyrics. “I’ve done a lot of angry music,” Moore said. “It’s so much more rewarding to write music that’s positive.” Stereowide will host an album release show Oct. 10 at Octopus College Hill in Cedar

Falls. They’ll be joined by Benjamin Cartel, of Brooklyn, and Iowa-based duo Dickie.

on’t let the gentle demeanor fool you. Low’s music tends to be typecast as slow and quiet, but the typecasters couldn’t be more wrong. Slow, maybe, but there’s often something profoundly disquieting about the songs. Even within the sparest of settings, this trio from northern Minnesota contains multitudes, and the undertow is particularly treacherous in Ones and Sixes.

song is called Gentle, but it’s a deception. Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker and Steve Garrington enter as if their boots are crunching through ice-encrusted snow drifts. Voices wash in and out like aural ghosts transmitted from between stations on a radio dial. A guitar strums off and on, an abstract sound independent of the song.

Returning to some of the stylistic inroads made on its 2007 album Drums and Guns, Low builds a framework out of electronic static and subterranean feedback. The bass tones evoke the trunk-rattling of contemporary hip-hop. The opening

The album rarely shouts. It wrestles with the idea that true self-knowledge reveals itself slowly, and, as suggested by the nine-minute Landslide, it sometimes arrives too late to save the relationships we most value. — Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune

BEN RENDALL NIGHT & DAY

B

en Rendall is having fun. He even says so in The One, off his new solo EP Night & Day. Rendall, half of the music duo Noe Clue, released the solo project in September. About a year in the making, multi-instrumentalist Rendall plinks or picks some ear-worm poppy licks and pairs the bubblegum sounds with lyrics that are often poetic and thoughtful. Recorded and produced by Nate Schaefer at Invictus Studios in Davenport, Rendall’s album uses layered tracks and effects to create an album with a full band sound. He blends piano with other synth sounds, drum machine and occasional guitar for a surprisingly soulful result. Rendall uses catchy, unexpected rhymes

and phrasing in The Cliff to put the upbeat lyrics front and center. Rendall even specifically denounces pessimism, singing, “I’ve always been afraid of pessimism / it’s a sickness … and it’s hard to let it go.”

t makes sense Prince chose Labor Day to deliver his new album, given the emphasis he’s put lately on his devotion to work. For a guy who not long ago seemed ambivalent about re-entering the pop mainstream, this frenzy of activity feels like a sign he wants to be part of the conversation again. So does the sound of many of his latest songs on HitNRun Phase One, which pulls deeply from the kind of electronic dance music that now dominates pop. For every gem such as X’s Face or the blistering Hardrocklover, there’s a halfconsidered cut such as Like a Mack or Mr. Nelson. Does that mean HitNRun might more accurately be HitNMiss? It does.

It’s not all sunshine. Or maybe it is. “When you go away, I go out of my mind,” Rendall sings in The Sun & The Rain. “When you stay, that’s when the sun starts to shine and I feel fine.” Schmaltzy? Yes, but Rendall’s fun is infectious. The song also fittingly ends with a guitar solo, making it a perfect theme song for a 1980s or ’90s sitcom. His mix of sugary pop, fun lyrics and geek-chic optimism evokes smiles, but also distracts from the tight arrangement, vocal harmonies and multiple instruments

Allen College The addition of an occupational therapy program beginning this fall will only serve to expand the identity and reach of Allen College, said Dr. Cindy Hahn. “The OT program will expand the educational opportunities at Allen College,” said Hahn, the program director. “We want to make people aware of the increasing number of health care programs we offer that lead to careers and meet growing needs.” A workforce need for occupational therapy services in the state, particularly in rural areas, was recognized early, and the formation of Allen College’s new program has been several years in the making. Hahn and academic field work coordinator Margo Kreger have been on staff for a year developing the curriculum while Denise Dermody has recently come aboard to complete this year’s faculty team. The accreditation process is still underway, with the final review slated to begin in December. The program’s accreditation self-study will be reviewed and a site visit will be conducted by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education in fall 2016. “We hope for full accreditation to be achieved approximately a year before the students are ready to graduate,” said Hahn. The master’s program will consist of 80 semester hours of credit and require 27 months of study, including six months of Level II Fieldwork in community settings. Once the program is accredited, graduating students will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination to become a registered occupational therapist.

Hawkeye Community College When it came to choosing the right college, Sarah Ludwig had certain criteria. It had to be close to home. It had to have small class sizes. It had to provide a university atmosphere but not the university price tag. She found all that and more at Hawkeye Community College.

TE’SHEA BURT

“I felt Hawkeye was the right fit for me,” Sarah said. “It’s more affordable than a university and you’re still getting that ‘college feel’ without it being too overwhelming.”

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2015

A graduate of Western Dubuque High School, Sarah came to Hawkeye for the Liberal Arts Transfer program. By completing the first two years of her bachelor’s degree at Hawkeye, Sarah receives a high-quality college education while saving more than $6,600* in tuition and fees. Eighty-eight percent of students who apply for financial aid receive assistance, and more than $355,000 in scholarships are awarded annually.

“The instructors here actually care. They’re approachable and if you’re having trouble in class it’s easy to talk to them. The one-on-one communication is just awesome.”

Sarah plans to transfer to Iowa State University for a bachelor’s degree in family and consumer science, a process made seamless thanks to Hawkeye’s articulation agreements with Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

Waterloo, Iowa

Hawkeye also offers more than 50 career and technical programs. More than half of students choose Hawkeye to gain the skills and knowledge for a great career in two years or less. Hawkeye’s state-of-the-art facilities are part of what drew Sarah to campus. The Health Education Services Center offers fitness classes, personal training and exercise facilities. Hawkeye’s classrooms are wired with innovative technology, including a patient simulator lab,

Iowa Lakes Emily Blanchard’s path to Iowa Lakes Community College wasn’t exactly a straight road. She took all her prerequisite credits at a college close to home and made plans to attend another surgical technology program. Shortly before she was due to start there last fall, she found out the program was not accredited.

“Accreditation was a huge priority for me,” Blanchard said, “because it is a requirement to take the national certification exam.”

Occupational therapy differs from other programs offered by Allen College in the holistic nature of the profession itself. “We don’t just look at an arm that is not working. We look at how loss of function in that arm affects a person’s job or how they hold a baby or how they wash their dishes, and then we look at how that affects the person emotionally as well,” said Hahn. “We figure out how it affects the things that they are used to doing and help them learn to adapt.” The suites building, known as Alumni Hall across the street from Allen College, is in the final phase of renovation to provide a working OT lab in a natural environment. Existing classrooms will be used for lectures, and the community has stepped forward with opportunities for field work. “We have, probably, over 180 field work sites already — people are calling us to offer field work, which is wonderful,” said Hahn. Hahn hopes to add two additional faculty members next year and increase enrollment. Additional construction may also be a part of the future as the occupational therapy program plans to add more lab space and classrooms further down the road. “It’s a win-win for the community and the college together,” Hahn said. “The college is recognized for being very community-focused. And as a profession that is greatly involved in communitybased practice, we’re able to develop a program that complements the nursing and other health science programs Allen College already offers. The OT program expands the college’s ability to develop and educate a greater variety of qualified practitioners to meet the growing health care needs of the community.” More information about the new programs is available by calling 319.226.2014.

3D BodyViz imaging software, driving simulators, police training simulators and other advanced technologies in transportation, advanced manufacturing and information technology. Students are able to gain real-world experience through internships, clinical and field experiences. One of Sarah’s favorite places is the Brock Student Center, where she can spend time with friends, have lunch or just relax between classes. The student center is also home to Student Life, which plans everything from large campus events like Fall Fest to weekly activities like grocery bingo. Sarah is active with Student Ambassadors and Student Leadership Council, two of the more than 30 clubs and organizations on campus. New for fall, Hawkeye offers intercollegiate sports. Known as the Hawkeye RedTails, athletes compete in co-ed sports shooting, with men’s and women’s soccer beginning in fall 2016. Club sports like golf and dance team and intramurals provide activities for students with all levels of interest and skill. Sarah enjoys the convenience of living in Hawkeye Towers, one of the privately owned apartment complexes across the street from campus. “The apartments are nice and I like the people who work there,” she said. Hawkeye Village apartments are also located across from Hawkeye, and there are many housing options in the Cedar Valley just minutes from campus. Students can also live in the University of Northern Iowa dorms — just 15 minutes from Hawkeye’s campus — where they can participate in clubs, organizations, marching band, ROTC and more. Each year, more than 5,300 students choose Hawkeye. To see if Hawkeye Community College is the right choice for you, schedule a campus visit at 319.296.4000 or www.hawkeyecollege. edu/go/visit. *Cost based on the 2014-15 tuition and mandatory fees for 30 credit hours per academic year, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Tuition and Fees, 2014-2015.

So she began her search for a new program. When she met with Iowa Lakes Surgical Technology program advisor Dana Grafft, Blanchard got the direct answers she was looking for. Grafft explained her expectations and the program requirements. Blanchard saw the facilities — two new state-of-the-art surgical suites — and was impressed. Finally, she learned the program was not only accredited but that she could also take her national certification exam right on the Iowa Lakes campus, a real benefit for someone who expressed some test anxiety. Blanchard plans to work as a surgical technologist while she completes her bachelor’s degree and ultimately plans to enter a physician’s assistant program.
