COMMUNITY SERVICE! It rained - a lot - on Saturday, April 28 but that didn’t keep UB students down! Some cleaned up the UB section of County Highway M then joined other UB students

at the Kane Street Community Garden. There was plenty to do - clearing debris, moving compost, revitalizing paths, planting seeds and getting things ready for the new growing season.
On May 8, 2012 we received word from the US Department of Education that Upward Bound at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has been funded through 2017.
In other words, WE GOT THE GRANT!!
We will continue to serve eligible students in La Crosse and Monroe counties in their efforts to enroll in and graduate from college for at least the next five years. We are now charged with serving 95 students, as opposed to our previous target number of 85, and we must do that with the same amount of funding. Creative use of our budgeted funds will be necessary to achieve our goals with less money for each student. Our new grant incorporates an online seminar that students will be required to participate in at least once a month, we are pursuing additional fund raising efforts and partnerships with community organizations to maintain our programming and eliminate redundant services. We would like to thank all those who wrote letters and made phone calls to legislators in support of Upward Bound funding! We will more than likely face additional struggles in the future – but this battle has been won. We look forward to helping students achieve their goals for a long time to come!

Jobs and Earnings. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook - 2010-2020 Projections is a good place to look for what the future might hold. Jobs for those without degrees like home and health aides, food service workers, cashiers, clerks, and child care workers are projected to increase, but wages will remain low. Jobs requiring some post
high school education and/or training, such as construction and manufacturing work are also expected to increase. Wages for these jobs are higher. The highest paying occupations of the future are mostly in careers that require a bachelor’s degree or higher including health care, engineering, marketing, and therapy. www.bls.gov/ooh/about/projections-overview.htm

WHY SUMMER UB? Summer UB is one of the most important components of the Upward Bound program. Time and again our graduates tell us that summer UB was critical in helping them succeed in college.
Practice for the future. It’s often hard for families to separate from their students. UB Summer, with it’s weeks on campus/weekends home schedule lets both students and families practice letting go.
Retention. Learning is an ongoing process. Students who don’t keep their learning skills up over the summer are likely to lose some of their knowledge especially in math and world languages - by the time school starts up again in fall. Summer UB’s classes in math, science, language arts and world language help UB students stay at their academic best.
Professional and supervised. The staff to student ratio at UB Summer is about one to four. Our highly experienced and well-trained residential staff live with UB students and are available to help with home sickness, personal, roommate, school or other issues. UB has more than 30 years’ experience operating a successful, meaningful, summer pre-college program that really makes a difference.
College skills. Only about 55% of all college starters earn degrees! College skills - everything from how to talk to your teacher about your performance to how to get along with a roommate - can make the difference. At Summer UB, guided by experienced tutors and staff, students have a chance to learn and practice these skills.
What if we have schedule conflicts? We work with students’ and families’ schedule conflicts where possible. Teachers and tutors make sure students have a plan for making up missed work. What if my student wants to work? UB summer students may work on weekends. We discourage work during the week - our schedule is full and academics are the highest priority.
Planning and Goal Setting. If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re probably not going to get there! UB Summer teaches students to set ambitious goals, make a plan, and follow the plan to a successful outcome. This life skill can help them be better students and citizens.
Summer UB is an investment you and your student are making in the future. Fifty-five percent of all starters earn degrees, but that rate is much lower for low-income and/or first generation students. Work may provide short term benefits, but maintaining and enhancing academic knowledge, learning college level skills, practicing planning and goal setting, and developing a vision of a successful future in a professional, supportive environment can provide many more personal and financial benefits in the long run.
It’s FREE! There are many pre-college programs across the country, but in most cases, students must pay thousands of dollars to participate. UB Summer, including classes with experienced and dedicated teachers, tutoring and mentoring, skills workshops, room, board, field trips, school supplies, transportation and more, is absolutely FREE.
