Summer Recap This summer, 49 rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors joined us for an intensive six-week residential pre-college experience. The first five weeks were held on the UW-La Crosse campus, where students took academic classes to prepare them for the following school year. Additionally, sophomores enrolled in a Study Skills workshop, juniors took a Career Exploration class, and seniors focused on college admissions and financial aid. Seniors also job shadowed several area professionals and met with university advisors and recruiters. Students also gained valuable life experiences, like living with a roommate, exploring arts and recreation through ungraded exploratory classes, participating in community service projects, and performing in our Talent Show. At our annual Fine Dine etiquette dinner, students practiced their formal dining and networking skills as they feasted with local professionals. The sixth week of our program took us off campus to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Students stayed on campus at the U of M, visited several Twin Cities colleges and universities, enjoyed a hilarious musical, sampled delicious ethnic cuisine, toured area businesses, and shopped ‘til we dropped at the Mall of America. Students also got a taste of mass transit as they traveled by train and bus throughout the city.

Meet the Upward Bound Staff Antoiwana Williams Outgoing Director

Lisa Yang Student Advisor

After four years as Director of Upward Bound, Antoiwana will be leaving our program to step into her new position as Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services at UW-La Crosse.

A UB grad (Central ’99), Lisa is our new Student Advisor. She is an alumna of UW-La Crosse (’05) with a BA in Sociology. Since summer of 2007 she has been the Chinese Teacher for Summer UB.

During her years with UB, Antoiwana has provided our program with outstanding leadership and direction while supporting our students and challenging them to achieve their dreams. She will be dearly missed.

Lisa will be advising students at their schools as well as supervising tutoring sessions. This semester she will spend Mondays at Holmen High School, Tuesdays at Onalaska High School, Wednesdays at Logan High School, and Fridays at Central High School.

Paul Krause Assistant Director

Cathy Van Maren Administrative Specialist

Ben Penlesky Student Advisor

Paul has been with the UB program since 1990. He teaches the Senior Seminar class during our Summer Session, which allows students to research colleges that interest them, and prepare for the rigorous college application process. During the school year, Paul coordinates our ACT preparation workshops and supervises the Wednesday night tutoring sessions in Tomah and Sparta. He also visits 8th grade classrooms each Spring to recruit new students.

Cathy is UB's Administrative Specialist. She sometimes refers to herself as “the office fossil” because she’s been with UB the longest: since 1985!

Ben has been with our program since 2006, when he was first hired as a residential summer Language Arts tutor. Since then, Ben has worn several hats — academic year tutor, Language Arts instructor, AmeriCorps paraprofessional, and now, Student Advisor.

Paul is a UW-L graduate who enjoys sailing, traveling, racing, and hockey.

You’ve probably spoken with Cathy on the phone or received mail from her, since she does most of the office correspondence, publishing, and recordkeeping. A graduate of Iowa State, she also took many classes at the University of North Carolina. Her interests include her family, politics, alternative energy and transportation, the Netherlands, gardening, Waldorf education, music composition, and bicycling.

Ben spends his time conducting advising sessions with students, supervising tutoring sessions, recruiting new students to our program, and coordinating events for our students.
