UB Volleyball Tournament Serves Friends and Fun An estimated 60 students, alumni, staff, and supporters attended the fifth annual Upward Bound Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday, December 28 at the REC at UW-La Crosse. The event has grown every year, with UB students past and present jumping at the chance to compete, cheer, or just hang out for an afternoon. This year, seven teams turned out for some friendly competition. After two or three games of round robin play, each team was seeded based on their record. The ensuing single elimination tournament played out with few upsets, as first seeded Hai Cha successfully defended their 2009 title with a close win over second seed The Avengers. Third ranked We Are Alums defeated the Badgers for third place overall. Upward Bound would like to say thank you to all who showed up, nice playing to all teams who participated, and congratulations to this year’s champions, Hai Cha. See you all again next year! December 2010/January 2011

UB has been serving students in our area since 1979! We try to follow up on as many of the 300+ UB grads and others (those who were dropped from UB, withdrew from or moved from our YOU CAN USE UB service area before high school graduation) every year.

UB can and does help students prepare for college success, but in the end, it’s up to individualsb to take the right classes, get good grades, turn in applications on time, make college performance a priority, and ask for help from UB or others when it’s needed. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the December 2010 unemployment rates were highest for those without a high school diploma (15.7%), high for those with a high school diploma (9.8%), better for those with some college or an associate’s degree (about 8%) and best for those with at least a four year college degree (about 4.7%). www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t04.htm

For students who stay in UB through high school graduation, postsecondary graduation rates are higher than those for all students and much higher than those for low-income students. Our most recent rates: 2000 graduates - 11 of 12 UB grads graduated from college and/or technical college with certificates or degrees (92%)

As the (UB) World Turns (countdown to adventure edition) Pending approval from the Department of Education, Paul Krause will take over as Director of Upward Bound. Cathy Van Maren will be Student Services Coordinator. Lisa Yang and Ben Penlesky will be UB advisors. Michelle Fuentes, who worked for UB during summer 2010, will join the program in February as advisor. We’ll keep you posted if there are any other changes!

UB Update

Thank you UB grads!

In a major Blast from the Past, we recently heard from Tammie (Stallman) Jax (Mauston ‘95). She earned certificates and degrees from Western Wisconsin Technical College and from Barton County (KS) Community College. She recently earned a Bachelor’s degree (with honors) from Ashford University (IA) and is pursuing a graduate degree in education! CONGRATULATIONS, Tammie!!

Amy Lee (Logan ‘10), who is a UW-L student was our keynote speaker at the UB Scholarship Workshop in November! Thanks, Amy!!!

Kim Leitner (Holmen ‘07), a student at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, is starting an internship in recreational therapy at Winona Health!

Thank you, Tou Yang (Central ‘05), a graduate of UW-La Crosse who works for City Brewery and Bekky Mayfield (Tomah ‘04), a graduate of Winona State University who works for Girl Scouts of the USA - Riverland Council! These two UB grads donated their time on Saturday, November 6 to talk to UB students and parents at our annual CAREER DAY event!

We’ve finished our Annual Performance Report for 2009-2010. Overall, we did pretty well: * We served 86 students (funded for 85) * We reported 88% of students continuing in the program from one year to the next (our goal: 77%)

Whoo-hoo! More graduates to report on!

* We exceeded our goal of having at least 70% of each cohort start college the fall after hs graduation (that includes, for each hs graduating class, students who graduated through UB and those who were in but dropped, moved or withdrew before high school graduation) For the class of 2010, 77% enrolled.

Tanya Becker (Logan ‘95) has earned a second Bachelor’s degree from the University of WisconsinLa Crosse (her first was from the University of Minnesota)! Katrina Jaworski (Holmen ‘06) earned a Bachelor’s degree from Viterbo University in December!

* We exceed our goal of having 80% of those who did start in the fall after high school graduation continue into their second year (for the 2009 cohort, at least 84% are still enrolled).

Sue Vang (Logan ‘04) earned a diploma from Western Wisconsin Technical College!

Our one difficutly is meeting the “proficiency” standard. While many states require a 12th grade test, in Wisconsin, the last state test through which proficiency is measured is given in 10th grade. So, we must use 10th grade WKCE scores to report whether or not our students are meeting state proficiency standards. Our goal (perhaps too rigorous) is that 80% of each cohort will be proficient, but our cohort average is only about 65%.

Kayla Martin (Tomah ‘08) earned her Associate of Applied Science degree from Western Technical College! Tou K Yang (Central ‘05) earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse! Adam Vang (Onalaska ‘06) graduated in December from the Electrical Worker Apprenticeship Program at the Alaska Job Center!

While we have missed this goal, our college-going and persistence (and graduation) rates are good. We will just have to see how missing this goal will affect our past performance points this summer and fall when we write our new grant for funding beyond 2012.

Song Vang (Logan ‘04) earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2009. She now works in the food safety/quality control field!

Why Summer UB?

S T N E R A P

UB summer paperwork is in the mail! We’ve even started receiving some paperwork back in our office. Students who have completed UB summer paperwork in the UB office by February 12 and who attend the UB summer program will earn a $50 bonus stipend. Please help and encourage your student to get her/his paperwork returned by that deadline! Why should your student attend?

* Summer UB is an important part of the entire Upward Bound program! During the academic year, UB provides tutoring, skills development and college visits to help students stay at the top of their academic game. But during the summer, those who don’t use their academic skills often lose them! With the classes, workshops, mentoring and tutoring provided during summer UB, your student will retain important math and language knowledge and develop and sharpen important academic skills. * Summer UB helps students keep, build and strengthen their academic and personal skills! Summer UB students get a head start on their fall math, science, language arts and world language classes. Our teachers are great and our classes are small. UB staff work with students to help them learn study skills, time management, goal setting, and test taking plus leadership and personal skills that will help them throughout their lives. * Summer UB helps students focus on their future! Summer UB students are surrounded by caring professionals and successful college students. In addition, summer UB students visit colleges and learn about careers. During summer UB students focus on being successful in school and learn how that translates into success in college and careers. * Summer UB helps students prepare for college! College isn’t easy - only about two-thirds of all students who start college ever graduate. For low-income and first generation students (those served by Upward Bound), that rate is lower. Upward Bound has a track record of success. Nationwide, UB students are four times more likely to earn a college degree than their non-UB peers. This is not an accident! Time and again, our graduates have told us that summer UB was the most important part of preparing them to be successful in college. * Summer UB helps families prepare for college! For many families, letting go of their students is a hard and heart-wrenching experience. Summer UB helps students and their families prepare for this positive separation. Students live on campus from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon for five weeks but they are home on the weekends. There is a trip during the sixth week, but students are able to spend all of August with their families. * Summer UB is FREE! Many parents spend thousands of dollars every summer so their students can attend academic camps that will help them get ready for life success. Summer Upward Bound is free - meals, room, teachers, tutors, school supplies, transportation, field trips, college visits and career exploration are all included as benefits of participation in the program. Students even earn stipends (up to $10 per week). SUMMER UPWARD BOUND 2011 TENTATIVE DATES Wednesday, June 15 - students move into the residence hall during afternoon/evening Friday, June 17 - students go home for weekend at 6 p.m. (every Friday at 6 p.m. except July 1) Sunday, June 19 - students return to campus at 6 p.m. (every Sunday except July 3) Friday, July 1 - students go home at 12:30 p.m. for long holiday weekend Sunday, July 3 - Monday, July 4 - NO UB Tuesday, July 5 - NO UB CLASSES - students return to campus at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 - students move out of the residence hall in the afternoon/evening Sunday, July 24 - Upward Bound summer graduation and leave for Milwaukee trip Wednesday, July 27 - students return from Milwaukee trip and go home
