TheislandnationofHaitiisthepoorestcountryintheWesternHemisphere,withoneinfour inhabitantsofthissmallCaribbeannationlivinginextremepoverty.Plaguedbypoliticalinstability, aswellasthedevastatingaftermathofthe2010earthquake,thecountryofHaitiisstillstruggling forrecovery.

AccordingtoUNICEF,maternalmortalityinHaitiis35womenoutofeverythousand;neonatal healthcareisequallyabysmal,with3.1percentofnewbornsdyingwithinthefirstmonthafterbirth.

Mostofthematernalandneonataldeathsareconsideredlargelypreventable,givenadequate healthcareresources.Accessibilitytotheseresourcesisanotherimportantissue,withlessthan36 percentofpregnantwomengivingbirthinanyhealthcarefacility.
