local community and supporting local businesses, we help keep our local economy strong and prosperous. Sunset Air offers a range of Maintenance Agreements that can help keep your equipment in top condition for many years. It’s so important in today’s business environment that you understand your manufacturer’s warranty. A big issue is that most manufacturers require at least yearly maintenance to avoid voiding their warranties. Unfortunately, many find out their warranty has been voided only after the fact. If you have questions about your warranty or maintenance agreements, one of our highly-trained customer service representatives will be glad to help you. We service ALL makes and models, including but not limited to Lennox, Trane, Carrier, Ruud, Daikin, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant, Comfortmaker, Amana, American Standard, and York. Did you know that Sunset Air offers free second opinions? We hear from too many customers who have been bombarded with calls from A/C companies pitching free inspections. Our customers tell us that many of those “free” inspections have resulted in them purchasing equipment or paying for services they do not need. Our second opinion may save you from an unnecessary expenditure while providing peace of mind. On behalf of everyone here at Sunset Air, thanks for your business and your trust. We are here to serve you, today and far into the future.

WHY GET A SECOND OPINION? by Clair Cameron

I

magine taking your car in for a simple tune-up and having a mechanic tell you that only a new engine can solve your problem. You’d probably be immediately skeptical; after all, a brand new engine is going to cost you a lot more than an oil change, and the mechanic stands to make more money. If you’re wise, at that point you’ll turn around and get your car looked at by someone else before you do anything. Maybe the mechanic isn’t lying, but it’s always good to double check. Unfortunately, unscrupulous characters are everywhere, trying to make an extra buck by selling their customers something they don’t need. From salesmen to mechanics and even air conditioning contractors, it’s good to be cautious. Seeking a second opinion is always the right idea whenever you’re facing a large repair bill. “On more than one occasion, I’ve had customers call us seeking a second opinion because some other air conditioning contractor told them they needed a whole new system,” says Jason Schreyer, the President of Sunset Air. “We’d head out to look at their system for them, and sure enough all they need is a small repair. It happens more often than you think.” When it comes to air conditioning services, high pressure selling often works. When it’s super hot outside, all a person wants is their A/C back on. Secondly, when a nice-looking professional in a uniform says something, a lot of people take it as fact. But regardless of how much you’re made to sweat, it’s recommended that

you remove yourself from the situation and take some time before making a major decision. “Your mother probably always told you to be cautious of strangers, and she’s right,” says Jason Schreyer. “If our customers want to seek a second opinion about the work we do, I’m not offended. Seeking a second opinion about any major repair is a smart idea. Sadly, there are a lot of bad contractors out there who will do anything to make money.” As a consumer, it’s your job to take all the necessary steps to protect yourself. For starters, make sure you’re only doing business with a company who is licensed. Second, spend a little time researching different contractors; ask your friends who they’ve used, and search for reviews online. Not getting ripped off starts by making sure any organization you do business with is a reputable one. When you call a different contractor to get a second opinion, give them the details of the first company’s diagnosis so they know exactly what to look for. When it comes to providing customers a second opinion, many contractors will offer their expertise free of charge. So, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get all of the facts before you open your wallet; a good company will support your decision to protect yourself.

“S

ince 1999, Sunset Air and Home services has been serving Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry, and Desoto counties,” company president Jason Schreyer says. “Our team of professionals can handle all of your air conditioning and heating needs with excellent service and quality workmanship, and we service all makes and models, including Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Ruud, Daikin, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant, Comfortmaker, Amana, American Standard, and York.” Beyond keeping customers toasty in the winter and cool in the summer, the company prides itself on offering options for individual circumstances. In some cases, Schreyer notes, “repair might be the best option, in others, re-

placement. It all depends on you, your home, and your budget.” Few businesses in southwest Florida escaped the ravages of the Great Recession, but none were harder hit than those dependent on the real estate sector. Once the bottom fell out of the housing market, hundreds of ancillary businesses also fell by the wayside. “Yes, the recession was hard on us,” Schreyer says. “And it was hard to have to lay off good people. We also lost customers due to foreclosures on their homes … Beginning in about 2006, we felt the change. I’d like to say it was gradual, but unfortunately it wasn’t. In fact, it happened so fast that there was little time to methodically deal with the reality of the collapse of the housing market.” SUNSET-AIR.COM

As he described the changes in the company over the past six years, his voice reflected the stunning turnaround, and what it meant to him personally. “From our founding in 1999 through 2005, and into the beginning of 2006, we were doing extremely well,” Schreyer says. “I had 115 employees, and our sales revenue was around $13 million a year, most of that in new construction. As related businesses closed due to the dying market, we were stuck with about a half-a-million dollars in bad debt. At the same time, our revenues dropped from $13 million to $3 million.” Schreyer reduced and reconfigured his personnel, starting with administration. He bought out his original partner, and completed all of the required

OURJOURNEY “Today, we’re employing new people and have new customers,” Schreyer says. “We’re back on a positive track and determined to keep it that way through service, service and service.” licenses previously held by that individual. This personally bankrupted him. “My wife and I put every penny we had into making that initial change,” he says. Service became the key to the next phase of the business, with maintenance and replacement of existing equipment the focus. And then the methodical approach became clearer, allowing him to outline in his mind the steps he would need to take to stay afloat. One of the lessons Schreyer learned was to not put the majority of his business into one company: “I started a second company that is focused on new construction,” he says. “Our core business at Sunset Air is still customer service, maintenance and replacement. I’m confident that will see us through should there be another ‘bump in the road’.”

“We recently bought two new system’s from Sunset Air and Home Services. We are very satisfied with their service, price, quality, and responsiveness. Would recommend to others. “ Maryellen B. Naples

hether basking in the warm summer sun or enjoying the crisp cool winter air, Florida residents can maximize their cooling and heating system with simple routine maintenance. With small amount of foresight, knowledge and time, home and business owners can enjoy clean and efficient air conditioning and heating throughout the year. One of the easiest and least expensive maintenance tasks is simply to frequently clean or replace air filters between visits from a professional. Not only does this improve the quality of the air within the home, it also extends the lifespan of your air conditioning system. “One of the most important things a homeowner can do is change their filters and make sure that they are cleaned on a regular basis,” says Ryan Lane, Sunset Air’s Service Manager. “When we come out, we’ll clean the drain lines, check the Freon, levels, and change the filter. But keeping those filters clean between visits can make a big difference in air quality and efficiency. It’s something that anyone can do.” Preventing problems before they arise is ideal, and smart home and business owners rely on preventative

WITH REGULAR CHECK-UPS One of the easiest and least expensive maintenance tasks is simply to frequently clean or replace air filters between visits from a professional. maintenance plans to keep their systems working at peak efficiency and to ensure that, should any problems arise, they are dealt with swiftly. “If you are part of a yearly maintenance program, not only do you get us out annually to maintain your system during the year, but should we have to come out at any other time during the year, you get a 10% discount on parts and labor every time we come out, and you also get reduced trip charges and priority service,” Ryan says. “Priority service is so important, because on the first hot day of the season or the first cold day, we get a lot of calls. We have around-the-clock service, and we’ll have a huge spike over a weekend. “What priority service means for customers signed up with maintenance agreements is that they go to the top of

the list. If you call us and your unit is down and you are already on a plan, you are our priority.” Of course, maintaining your system is in your best interest, but it also might be a requirement of your equipment’s warranty. Many manufacturers require annual maintenance to provide warranty coverage, and some require proof of regular preventative maintenance plans and services. “They clearly want you to have maintenance, and if you don’t have it done, that might be enough to void some warranties,“ says Ryan. “We recommend twice a year maintenance, once in the spring to get ready for the summer, and again in the fall to prepare for winter. The heating system is just as important to properly maintain as the air conditioning unit.” SUNSET-AIR.COM

Myers. “My team and I are proud sponsors of this charity, and we applaud their support for families, especially children, in our service area.” Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida (RMHC) is headquartered near the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida on the Lee Memorial Health System’s HealthPark campus in South Fort Myers, and is best known as an organization that provides care and housing for families of seriously-ill or injured children being treated at nearby hospitals. Many of these children have life threatening illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and neonatal complications. Since 1996, the Ronald McDonald House has provided over 3 thousand families with a home away from home. The average length of stay for a family is 12 days, but families are welcome to stay until their child is discharged, which can sometimes mean months. The Ronald McDonald House asks for a modest donation of $10 per day. Unfortunately, 85% of the families who stay are unable to contribute financially; however no one is ever turned away based on their inability to pay. The programs serve five counties – Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry and Glades. “These outlying areas – not just Ft. Myers – rely on us, too” explained Angela Katz, Development Director for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In cooperation with Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida, we serve families year-round in Collier County through our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, providing medical and dental screenings, preventative and restorative dental care, eye exams, glasses, physicals and health education to children who would otherwise go without healthcare. hile the Florida lifestyle is the envy of many living in colder climates, our sub-tropical weather can do more than relax and soothe. Many homeowners find themselves stuck with unwanted house guests as the seasonal temperatures heat up – mold. Stopping mold in its tracks is a challenge, but one that needs to be faced before the organisms damage equipment, destroy walls and floors, or harm the health of you and your pets. Cleaning and preventive maintenance of an air conditioning system is important in any climate, but is imperative in Southwest Florida. Mold can accumulate in several different areas of an air conditioning system, and it’s important to have your unit checked and cleaned once or twice a year. If mold is able to grow, it makes the air conditioning unit work harder,

which costs more and decreases the life expectancy of your system. Additionally, the spores blow throughout the house, building up over time. This is particularly dangerous. There are four kinds of health problems that come from exposure to mold: allergic illness, irritant effects, infection, and toxic effects. The site explains: “For people who are sensitive to molds, symptoms such as nasal and sinus irritation or congestion, dry hacking cough, wheezing, skin rashes or burning, watery or reddened eyes may occur. People with severe allergies to molds may have more serious reactions, such as hay-fever-like symptoms or shortness of breath.” The Environmental Protection Agency suggests not running the HVAC system if mold is suspected, as it could spread the spores throughout the building. But stopping the use of an air conditioning

system due to suspected mold growth in Southwest Florida would create uncomfortable conditions during the summer. That’s why regular cleaning and maintenance is crucial to your family’s and your employees’ health. Most of us think we only need to prepare against mold if we’re going away for the entire summer. Few realize that, under the right circumstances, mold can form in just 48 hours! And once it starts, it reproduces every six minutes. So do the math: If you’re leaving for more than a week, there’s an outside chance you could return to a funny smell that means there’s something wrong. Generally speaking, if you’re only leaving for a week or two, all you need to do is set your thermostat at 80 or 82 degrees and you should not have a problem. If you plan to be away for a month or longer, that’s when it would be wise to take more serious precautionary measures.

Here are some tips to help keep mold at bay while you’re away. »» Close windows before you leave (especially the bathroom and kitchen windows) and seal sliding glass doors. »» Close all south and west-facing blinds and curtains. »» Clean or replace your air conditioner filter. »» Turn up spreads and dust ruffles on couches and chairs. Stand your couch cushions on end. »» Open cabinet drawers and closets (especially bathrooms and bedrooms). »» Turn the hot and cold water off (This should be done even if you are gone for a short time). Flush your water for a few minutes when you return. »» If you have a de-humidistat, set it at 55% humidity and 80 degrees. This means the temperature must exceed 80 degrees and the humidity 50% before the air conditioner turns on. »» Keep in mind that you want air to circulate, not to remain stagnant. Your thermostat control should be set to automatic and cool. Set your thermostat to a temperature that will allow it to run (80-82 degrees). »» Ask a neighbor to check your home once a week or after a storm.

“S

unset Air has been a proud member of Builders Care for over five years,” said Builders Care Executive Director Heidi Taulman. “As a Cornerstone Investor, the company has partnered on over four dozen projects, and donated more than $15,000 in cash and in-kind support, helping elderly, disabled and economically challenged homeowners with emergency construction repairs that they could not afford.” Jason Schreyer, president of Sunset Air, said that the relationship has been fulfilling and well worth the effort. “The expressions of gratitude, the laughter, the tears – is extremely gratifying for

myself and my team,” he stated. “We value our relationship with Builders Care. Their goals and mission reflect ours, and we’re always excited about the opportunity to help the folks in our community who are in need.” Builders Care is the community outreach arm of the Lee County Building Industry Association (Lee BIA). Comprised of tradespeople from all areas of the construction industry, the organization serves qualified recipients who are referred to Builders Care by local social service agencies, churches and community members. Each case is carefully evaluated by governing board members

to determine eligibility. Homeowners selected are provided no-cost emergency home repair and renovations such as rebuilding steps, adding wheelchair ramps, and providing handicap accessibility in bathrooms and throughout homes; installing or upgrading air conditioning and plumbing, roof repairs, and complete re-modeling for health and safety purposes. “Building partners of all types as well as community groups volunteer their time, materials and labor to help make these projects a success” Taulman explained. “Builders Care relies on these partnerships to assist the most needy

When you purchased your new air conditioning system, it included a manufacturer’s warranty. You should have received a copy of this warranty from the manufacturer, which contains their terms and conditions. If you can’t find your warranty paperwork, call our customer service department. We’ll be happy to help you! Manufacturers are beginning to enforce the terms and conditions within your paperwork. These changes may affect you. Most manufacturers allow you to transfer warranties to the new owner upon the sale of your property for a small fee and within 30 days of the closing. Manufacturers are now requiring the use of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. There are thousands of possible OEM parts for any of the multiple manufacturers, which make using and obtaining OEM parts difficult, and we can no longer use generic stock parts to replace a a unit that is under warranty. However, it is our priority to repair your equipment as quickly as possible. Manufacturers do not cover costs for labor performed. This means that if you need service after regular business hours, extra charges may apply. Manufacturers often require yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/servicer in order to keep a warranty in good standing. If you are not currently having maintenance done on your equipment at least annually, please contact us or an authorized dealer/servicer in your area as soon as possible. Please call our customer service department if you have any questions or to schedule maintenance. We have several maintenance plans, and our professional staff will gladly explain them to you and help you choose the one that best fits your needs.

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST UNEXPECTED REPAIR BILLS with SERVICE AGREEMENTS FOR YOUR AC Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently, saving on utility bills. Potential problems can be prevented or corrected early. Additionally, proper servicing extends the life of your heating and air conditioning system. TOP 5

THINGS YOUR AC WANTS YOU TO KNOW

1

Water can cause your condenser to rust and wear out more quickly. Avoid having your sprinkler spray on your unit in order to reduce the risk of corrosion.

2

3

5

A system with varying speed options can conserve energy. Reducing your system’s output during milder weather will save you money on energy bills.

Remove debris, trim grass and tear out any bushes that restrict airflow. This will improve the efficiency of your system and reduce the risk of it overheating.

4

Adding a de-humidistat could help to conserve energy. A de-humidistat will turn your unit on when the humidity rises above a certain level, giving you even more control over the operation of your system.

A programmable thermostat gives you better control over output. When your unit is only on when it has to be, you’re going to see smaller energy bills.
