Delay Muscle Fatigue With the Sarasota/Bradenton ITU Triathlon just around the corner triathletes are in their last ditch effort to increase their endurance and delay "the wall." During this time, and while tapering training, many have learned that acupuncture in a couple specific points allows them to increase their endurance while delaying their muscle fatigue point. These treatments combined with care for any health or physical issue that may be occurring decreases recovery time and allows the triathlete to perform longer without fatigue. Recent research has documented the effects of acupuncture on decreasing muscle fatigue and improving running times and pulse rates. Results of this research demonstrated that with two simple points being treated the endurance of the muscle group tested became far more superior to the

group with no treatment. Thus showing that acupuncture can and does delay the onset of muscle fatigue so an athlete can perform longer without fatigue. More research looked at running times at 5000 meters at 75% maximum pulse rate. It compared three groups control, placebo and treatment group. The group with acupuncture showed improved running times each run (hence faster runs), improved heart rate recovery (faster return to normal heart rate) and overall recovery. This research shows something that acupuncture has shown for centuries, endurance and recovery improves with its use. For many athletes that have it done they always improve and feel better overall while training than without it.

How about this year you take a stand, and really learn what you need to do to build a strong, limber, fast, lean and healthy body. When I began pursuing this venture into fitness publishing, I was familiar with all kinds of local fitness clubs, whether it was hard-core pumping iron, or serene and peaceful yoga, and just about everything in between. I had taught classes in 6 different gyms in town. I had run all the major races, including the very first Sarasota Marathon (The Grouper Run), many Ringling Bridge Runs, the YMCA’s Superbowl Sunday Mini-Tri, and a dozen others. I thought I had a pretty good handle on what there was in our fair city. As I meandered my way around town meeting all the gym owners, studio owners, outdoor fitness instructors and so on, I learned that I didn’t know a fraction of what was out there for us in Sarasota. So many talented professionals. So many different choices. Keep your eye on this little periodical we call Fit941 Magazine because we are just beginning to uncover the hidden gems every week. I was fortunate enough to be offered the job as coach and co-host of a weekly fitness news segment on SNN (Ch 6 on Comcast), which begins on March 3rd and will air every Tuesday night thereafter during the 5:30 pm news. The segment is called Fat 2 Fit. I will coach one of SNN’s producers from a stocky 260 lbs to a goal weight of about 190 lbs. We will be utilizing every resource that Sarasota and Manatee Counties have to offer to us, from the clubs and yoga studios, boxing gyms, Pilates, CrossFit, Spin, running and lifting weights. Then there’s the massages, and the delicious and nutritious food. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it! Check it out and see all that this great fitness community has to offer. Friday Night Fights Comes to Robarts Arena

F

riday Night Fights are coming to Robarts Arena in Sarasota on April 3rd, with a boxing event featuring two title fights. Sarasota native and World Boxing Federation (WBF) North American Champion, China Smith, will defend his title during the headliner. Local supermiddleweight Aaron “The Jedi” Jaco will be featured in the co-main event, and is set to fight for a vacant WBF regional title.

Studio South Fitness Offers Money-back Fitness Guarantee

Six fights are scheduled for the nationally-televised card, which is presented by PerfectEnergySports.com and sponsored by the Sarasota Open. Proceeds will benefit local charities, including Big Brothers & Big Sisters and the Robert L. Taylor Community Center. We’re focused on giving back to Sarasota, because we care …” Headliner and WFB North American Champion, China Smith, noted how personal it is for his Team China to bring boxing back to Sarasota: “We will be making history by showcasing local talent and hosting two sanctioned title fights in one evening,” Smith says. “We want to bring boxing back to our hometown and give back to the community at the same time.” Tickets are on sale at Robarts Arena for a general admission price of $25. When asked where he would like to go to college, Tony says, "I'm town between the importance of academics and playing for a school that is a contender for a national championship." Havoc and Strongman Team Up for a Day of Fitness

he Havoc Games and the Gulf Coast Stongman Competition are teaming up on March 21 to deliver a day of combined endurance and strength-training competition. The event will be held at 10 am in Sutton Park, Palmetto.

Strongman athletes will compete in a series of games that utilize brawn, while CrossFit athletes will test their total fitness abilities in a variety of movements. The Strongman events will include: Truck Pull, Farmer’s Walk, Log Lift, Atlas Stone, and more. There will also be team events, such as Tug O’ War and a Truck Pull. The Havoc games will 'bring out the bear' with a themed competition.

Mind Over Matter Strength

eet Dr. Linda Muniz, Sarasota resident and M.D. Her story isn’t so much one of success as it is one of incredible strength and drive. Several years ago she was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was advised to give up her favorite pastime, skiing, due to the debilitating nature of the disease. But there was no way Linda was going to give up sports anytime soon. She hired a personal trainer and worked incredibly hard, becoming so strong that she had no trouble on the slopes that winter. The next winter started much the same: Linda took a few ski trips and stayed active. On her last outing of the season, Linda decided to enter a ski race. Her husband, Tony, and her friends pleaded with Linda not to enter, but she called her trainer and asked what he thought—“Go for it!,” he said. A short time later, Linda received a silver medal for her performance. Then, bad luck struck Linda again. After the race, on a normal run down the slopes, someone left a snowmobile where it didn’t belong and BAM! Linda hit it hard, breaking her leg, wrist, and a couple of ribs. Combined with the ALS, this kind of thing would be the end for most people—but not Linda. She spent the better part of a year in various hospitals, undergoing numerous operations to correct her injuries. Even though Linda was told she may not walk again, she was confident it was only a matter of time. After hours of painful rehab, not only did she walk, some say she was spotted jogging at the gym. To this day, she talks of one day hitting the slopes again. An optimist and a wonderful example of what it means to believe in your own inner strength, Linda’s mind-over-matter approach to defeating the limitations placed upon her are an inspiration to us all.

“The idea is to grow around the community of Bradenton, and help improve it through health and wellness,” says Moore. “More than anything, I want people to look at us as different than other CrossFit gyms. A Run to End Poverty

The Sharks Tooth 10K Strikes Again!

T

he annual Sharks Tooth 10K will take place on April 11 at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds. The competitive run/walk is a 6.2 mile race, complete with awards for overall achievement and special prizes for separate age categories. Athletes of all abilities are welcome to participate, and proceeds from the event go to benefit Special Olympics Florida – Sarasota County and the Active Suncoast Foundation.

arasota County has been lauded for many of its feature attractions and quality of life amenities: best beaches, cultural attractions, neighborhoods, shopping and dining, to name just a few.

In 2013, the area received another distinguished honor as a Road Runners Club of America’s Runner Friendly Community®. Only four communities were named that year, having met the program’s criteria of community infrastructure, community support and local government support for running. A proven track record that organizations and business work together to promote running as a healthy exercise and sport is key to winning the coveted designation, with the goal of shining a national spotlight on runner-friendly communities. The Sarasota Athletic Association, an RRCA Club, submitted the area’s application. The area is also home to The Manasota Track Club (MTC), which was founded in 1975 and consistently has approximately 700 paid members. David’s favorite event was the 2015 inaugural Sarasota Music Marathon. “The course was just stunning,” he says. “We ran through neighborhoods, Selby Gardens, the Ringling Bridge… the response was overwhelming. More than 550 volunteers and a full hot breakfast catered by Mattison's City Grille, as well, of course, as the outstanding music we heard along the way, made this a true standout event.” Sharon Jacobson, Fit2Run’s marketing brand director, notes that a primary benefit of the Running City designation is that it attracts runners from around the country to visit Sarasota and surrounding communities. “This is great for increasing tourism, as it showcases our beautiful area and its assets.”

hen Molly and David Jackson purchased the Fleet Feet Sports’ Sarasota franchise more than four years ago, they knew it was a perfect fit. They have been helping Sarasota’s running and fitness community for more than a decade. Their aim is to inspire people through education and training to lead a more active, healthy, and fun lifestyle.

Because if they think jumping out of a plane is a rush, they’ll never experience walking out to the ring in your home town to fight,” he says. “That is one of the most amazing rushes in the world; it’s absolutely unbelievable, that feeling. I still get that rush and that desire to feel that fix.”

Every day at the Team China gym in Bradenton, the champ is putting in hours of training, assuring that he will be ready on fight night. Though his opponent is still a mystery, Smith, 36, openly admits that, whoever it ends up being, the man is likely to be younger than he, but the age gap is not something he concerns himself with.


The heavyweight stays healthy through strength training and yoga, keeping his body active and ready for battle. He can still throw a solid punch and bob-andweave like the best of them, but “The Dragon” says his greatest weapon is his positive state of mind. “Thank God I live right. I surround myself with positive people, and I tell kids—I just believe,” he says. “I believe in god, and I believe I’m young. I feel like I’m in my mid-20s; I’m stronger and faster than ever. “

As he shadow boxes at the gym, listening carefully to the instructions of his head trainer—his dad—Smith looks smooth and agile, like a young, hungry competitor who hasn’t lost a step. Although outside of the ring he is a gentle giant, while training, the champion reacts sharply if his intense focus is broken by anyone. Mentally, he’s determined and confident that he will beat his opponent, and it doesn’t matter who the other guy is. “I am a shorter heavyweight, but I have speed and power. I’m going to use my

god given talent to my fullest ability, escalate, and take it to a whole new level. I don’t care who the other guy is,” Smith says. “Jaco and I, we train our butt off for this opportunity; we live and die by fighting. Mentally I’m feeling better and stronger than ever, because I’m fighting in my hometown. I’m defending my title in my hometown. “ Smith, who speaks highly of Jaco’s talent, says he owes all of the fighters on the card for making the night a success. Both “Dragon” and “Jedi” credit the team working with them out of the ring for making this Friday Night Fights a reality, noting the relief that comes from working with honest promoters and sponsors. After a career that has seen the worst of what boxing promotions can mean for the athletes Smith says he finally has a team around him that is full of nothing but good vibes. “We’re like family. I’m truly blessed to have this team. Without them, none of this would be possible. I’m so lucky to have them by me, with me. And when I think about it, I get emotional,” he says. “I’m truly blessed and humbled to have this fight in Sarasota.”

any call it the best experience they’ve ever had, standing on what looks like a large surfboard and paddling through the open water. The Hawaiian sport of standup paddleboarding (SUP) is growing in popularity, and we in the Sarasota area are surrounded by ocean water that makes for perfect paddling.

If you haven’t experienced SUP for yourself, there’s no time like the present to give it a try. Some look at paddleboarding as a fitness sport, and they’re not wrong. Maintaining balance works your core and legs, and paddling utilizes the muscles in your arms and back. However, it’s also an enjoyable recreational activity, one that is easily accessible for people of all ages. Just being out on the water and paddling to cool places offers pleasures and rewards that staying on land simply can’t provide. “It’s a phenomenal workout. So, it’s great for the body,” says Rob Alfieri, the owner of SUP Sarasota. “You’re out on the water, you’re out with marine life, you’re out with nature; so, it’s also very good for the soul as well—the spirit— because you’re really connecting with nature and connecting with the water.” SUP Sarasota offers what it calls ‘EcoTours’, on-water, guided tours conducted from a kayak or paddleboard. These explore the local beauty of the Little Sarasota Bay and Mangrove Islands, areas which are frequented by majestic manatees and dolphins. Paddlers will also be taken to beautiful Historic Spanish Point, a place where the oldest natives of what is now Florida once called home. “It’s total beautiful, un-spoiled, undeveloped Old Florida. It’s a tremendous way to experience what Florida used to be like,” Rob says. “We kind of give

re you a runner or endurance athlete? Do you train for hours throughout the week to be the best you can be at running? Are you having aches and pains that you believe are unrelated? Aches and pains are a sign that you need to work out smarter.

Dangers of not adding strength training to your workout program leads to imbalances in the body that present itself in the form of nagging pains or unrecognized overuse injuries.”

Lieberman, who has over 25 years of training experience and currently directs training programs for Crunch Fitness, has found that strength training for endurance athletes is vital, especially if running is the only form of exercise a person does to stay in shape. Adding a couple sessions of strength training per week can avoid causing major muscular imbalances. “There is a major part of society that suffers from postural problems due to anterior muscles being tight and dominant. This is far more exaggerated and problematic in each case of an endur32 FIT941.com

“Many people assume this is part of the natural effects of aging, and it is not,” Lieberman says.“Postural correction is the most common work done with each client daily. … Pain is often eliminated once an individual’s brain begins to activate the muscles that have stopped being recruited for movement. This applies to athletes of any age or fitness level.” It’s easy to spot a high-level marathon runner or cyclist. Often, their bodies have slouched shoulders, neck jutting forward, shortened chest muscles, shortened abdominals, and shortened hip flexors. Some or all of these imbalances apply. With all of those muscles being pulled forward from a highly repetitive activity, like running, over time the hamstrings and glutes become inactive.

This leads to what Lieberman calls “flat butt syndrome”, which reduces the ability to complete everyday tasks without putting the lower back at risk. Besides strength training, Lieberman believes that most runners would greatly benefit by stretching the anterior muscles and the strengthening of the posterior muscles of the body. “An ideal way to learn to strengthen the posterior muscles is to seek the assistance of a fitness professional to properly teach one to recruit the correct muscles,” he says. “If more anterior exercises are suggested instead of stretching those muscles, I suggest finding another professional with a better understanding of corrective exercise.” In closing, Bryan adds a cautious word of advice to people who seek professional training from an unreliable source: “Please keep in mind, there isn’t a professional strength coach on the planet that would have their athletes doing more than 12 reps to improve strength or maintain muscle,” he says. “Doing more reps doesn’t make a person lean, it destroys your muscle which is your fat burning machinery and is yet another reason why endurance training should not be your only form of exercise. Every ’body’ will benefit from some form of strength training.”

And that’s true, if you’re loading up your body with high-carb potato chips or crackers, which generally offer few nutritional benefits. However, there are ways to snack healthy without ruining your fitness venture. Further, snacking on the right foods may improve overall health, curb hunger, and help to keep your daily calorie intake down where it should be.

Working Out Can Also Damage Your Skin Riding your bike at top speed can certainly get you 'in the zone' where you feel that lactic acid burn, and know that your body is using up its available supply of oxygen. During strenuous exercise, your sweat carries toxins, moisture, and electrolytes out of the body. This can result in overall dehydration. Think of this process happening with skin cells, draining the moisture and causing a taut, drawn, emaciated look. Those salts in your perspiration can also etch away at your skin. Dr. Arsenault says, “Friction and excessive sweating can lead to chaffing, causing an irritation dermatitis.” Do you jog or swim, and spend lots of time outdoors? Chronic sun exposure from UV rays could cause cell DNA mutation, prematurely weathering your skin with age spots, wrinkles and increasing risk of skin cancer. Frequent sunburns significantly increase that risk. Add a Dermatologist to Your Fitness Team So, what should you do to get the most benefit from exercise and fitness without compromising your appearance? How do you avoid threats that may harm your skin and overall health? Just as you should consult your physician before embarking

on any fitness program, talk to your dermatologist. Drink plenty of fluids to keep skin cells hydrated and appearing plump, dewy and healthy. Dr. Arsenault suggests: • Avoid exercise in peak sun exposure hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM. • Wear a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher with frequent reapplication (at least every two hours). • Use sunscreens that include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These provide a physical barrier that reflect the harmful rays of the sun, and are less irritating to the eyes. • Wear loose, moisture-wicking fabrics to pull sweat away from the skin. • Wear tightly-woven, UV-blocking fabrics for sun protection. • Apply barrier balms to areas of the skin that frequently chaff, to prevent irritation. • Shower soon after exercise to prevent fungus and bacte rial infections. HCG Not Just a Fad by Nathan Freyburger he HCG diet is a fad that just won’t die, with its early roots in the 1950s work of British endocrinologist Dr. Albert T. W. Simeons, who suggested the use of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in conjunction with a calorie restricted diet as a means to lose weight and combat obesity. He outlines the details of his proposal in his book Pounds & Inches, A New Approach to Obesity, which was first published in 1954.

The hormone HCG is produced naturally when a woman is pregnant. It aids in the growth of a healthy placenta and with fetal development throughout the duration of the pregnancy. HCG also contributes to the production of healthy nails and skin, increases fertility, and naturally suppresses appetite, giving the hormone a variety of uses as a fertility treatment and a means to stimulate weight loss. In the late 1960s, the HCG Diet had all but vanished, but over the last decade it has a made a major resurgence, with

How you run – your gait – is as important as where you run, and the pros at the area’s most notable shoe establishments and training venues are experts in analyzing gait for best performance and minimal injury, for each type of runner.

In a gait analysis, you can expect to be asked questions about your running or walking distances and frequencies, your training goals, the surface you run on most often, your regular mileage and any injury history. You may want to bring in your old shoes, which can help the fitter in the selection process. The goal, of course, is to increase your speed and stamina. This all comes down to the gait cycle, determined by observing the biomechanics of the foot in motion. Kimmi Van Der Veer, store manager for Fit2Run on Main Street in downtown Sarasota, notes that gait analysis demonstrates how a runner’s individual body mechanics operate.

“At Fit2Run, our process starts with a measurement of both feet and a scan on our iStep machine,” she explains. “The iStep tells us about the arch-type of our guest, whether they have a high, low or medium arch. This helps us to determine if an orthotic is ideal for the guest and also gives us an opportunity to discuss injuries and injury prevention. We then move to the treadmill for a video-taped running or walking session of the guest in motion. Our goal is to replicate their usual running or walking conditions as much as possible. Afterwards, our trained associates analyze the slow motion recording using zFlo Gait Analysis to determine how much pronation

I’ll watch the movement from behind, then offer a tool box of drills and exercises to help them overcome any imbalances or weaknesses. The goal is, of course, to increase performance, but the overall goal is to reduce injury.” David Jackson, owner of New Balance Sarasota and New Balance University Park and Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota, says “When someone comes into the store, they are greeted warmly, given a cold bottle of water, and then we listen. Next is a gait analysis and spend as much time as necessary with that customer. Appropriate footwear is recommended and the customer leaves happy. Making our guests happy with my continued fit expertise as a pedorthist is the key to my continued involvement with New Balance.” He notes that wearing a shoe during the analysis will alter the gait. He advises against an over-supported shoe, and notes that his staff does not use treadmills in analyzing gait. “We want to see our customers walking barefoot, then we scan the arch, width, marginal, range of motion and biomechanics to determine the best choices,” he says. True gait analysis is not a generic exercise, but is a scientifically-based and technically-precise process. It is highly individualized, and reveals a lot about how you will hold up to training, performance and injury prevention.

If you want to instill good habits like fitness, the best time to start is when they’re young. Sports are a great place to look, and some sports, like tumbling and cheerleading, can be started as early as 3 years of age; though the benefits these light gymnastics provide could last a lifetime.

Partaking in tumbling and cheerleading will also help build social skills, since children work with others their own age in a cooperative, team-based environment. Going to a gym to tumble gets kids out of the house and interacting with a diverse group of people, building friendships and a system of support and motivation. Kids will feel strong and independent while also learning to listen, respect others, and work as a team.

“The number one thing it does is build their self confidence,” she says. “Because they were physically able to do something they could never do before, they start smiling and gleaming – the most timid kids. … It’s the strong, cool kids who can go across the monkey bars.” The number one fear parents have about signing their son/daughter up for any sport is injuries. Jamie says those fears are misguided, and that learning to tumble properly may even help protect toddlers from household falls. If you have any reservations about letting your child tumble or cheer, talking to a trainer may help put those fears to rest.

2. Schedule your workouts - In today’s fast paced world, a great way to remind yourself to get your workout in is to schedule them on your calendar or smartphone. If you don’t, they can be quickly thrown to the way side when an unexpected work or family issue arises. 3. Invest in a good pair of shoes - When you are running or walking, everything starts with your feet. If you do not have the proper gear on those feet, they will hurt and you will not want to use them. Go to a specialty running store and have a FIT specialist fit your properly. They have been trained to watch you walk and analyze your gait and understand the technology in the shoes. 4. Find an accountability partner - This has been the biggest motivator for me personally. Running with people is more fun and makes the time go by

5. Make sure a proper warm up, cool down and stretching is part of your routine -The warm-up is aimed at reducing muscle stiffness in order to decrease the chance of injury. Five to 10 minutes of walking will increase body temperature, oxygen utilization and blood flow to your muscles. When done with your run, try to resist the urge of stopping without a cool down. A proper cool down will help dissipate waste produces (such as lactic acid) from your body which should help reduce muscle soreness. A good cool down should consist of the following: • 5 to 10 minutes of walking – to decrease body temperature and remove waste products from the working muscles • 5 to 10 minutes of static stretching exercises - to decrease body temperature, remove waste products from the working muscles to increase range of movement Static stretches are important to the cool down, as they help muscles to relax and increase their range of movement. In my opinion, setting yourself up for success is the most important thing you can do when starting a running or walking routine. Once you get that established, the rest will come.
