Fitness, weight-loss and health are the focus of our magazine, but first and foremost we are a community-based magazine. While some articles will touch on general health , we will always provide information and stories that relate to all of us here in the 941 area. We believe in promoting our local businesses and employing their expertise and experience. Here in Sarasota and Manatee counties, people participate in so many different activities to keep fit, that we saw a great need to become the resource to pool them all together. Fitness requires commitment and knowledge. Sometimes it means getting out of your comfort zone. If you are a runner, you might find that trying pilates or boxing to be a great way to add interest and variety to your exercise regimen. If yoga is your thing, how about trying a SPIN class, or CrossFit? We advocate challenging your body with different types of exercise. I spent 14 years getting up early, putting on a suit, commuting an hour each way to and from a big city. High stress and little time or energy to exercise helped me put on about 50 lbs. It creeps up on you, a little at a time. So gradual that you don’t even notice going up four pants sizes. I was not an unusual case. I was an athlete from the time I was 5 years old until the time I graduated from college. Then, after college…not so much. In 2007 I had had enough. Something in me clicked. I had an epiphany. I went on a mission to learn all I could about nutrition and working my muscles and burning calories. In six months I went from 210 lbs. to under 150 lbs. I did this on my own. I look back and think how great it would have been to have a resource like this magazine. Instead of seeking books, trainers, internet tips and unsolicited, unqualified advice from friends, readers can find it all in Fit941 Magazine. It is the one source that gathers the most helpful information on nutrition and exercise, events, health tips, and weight loss-- all the things we need to get fit and stay fit. Fit941 Magazine is an interactive medium, with our website (Fit941.com), our evergrowing fitness directory and calendar of events. You can even sign up for our e-Fit newsletter on our website and keep up on breaking fitness and nutrition news, events, tastings, tips, and a million other awesome fitness activities. Find Your Fit More than 25 Sarasota area gyms and studios are teaming up with Fit941 Magazine to host the “10 in 30” program. Beginners and exercise enthusiasts alike can try 10 free different classes to complete in 30 days, beginning in January 2015. The program offers participants a variety of workout sessions in which they can pick their own schedules and their choice of fitness studio or instructor, which works specifically for them. The cost is $65. Participants take home a goodie bag filled with gifts from participating businesses. “We know that everybody who takes this is really going to like something they never tried before,” says Steve Lusko, the creator and coordinator. "It’s an effort to jump start people’s New Year’s resolution to fitness by offering exercise variety, and a little fun.” All registrants are also entered into the Fit941 launch drawing. Participants in the 30 day challenge, will be eligible for a prize, such as a $1000 Ryder bike gift card, a stand up paddle board, or a Seasucker bike rack. In total $5000 in prizes are up for grabs in the magazine launch giveaway. A weightlifting devotee can try Zumba or spinning. Boot camp fans can gain more flexibility in a yoga class. Other classes include boxing, pilates, crossfit, outdoor activities, and more. “We’re hoping people will do it with groups or couples,” says Lusko. “We’re trying to help people get outside of their comfort zone in pursuit of better fitness. Athlete Profile Music on the Move

Here comes Nikki! Eleven year old Nikki Yanez, of Sarasota, is really making quite a name for herself in youth tennis. She enjoys playing with opponents much older than she is, and quite often beats them. She’s in the 5th grade and she’s home schooled. She only trains about eight hours per week on the court, but attributes much of her success to the work she does off the court. Her strength and stamina come from about 20 hours training in gymnastics, five hours swimming, five hours of soccer and running each week. “Endurance is very important in today’s tennis environment. Being just as strong in the 3rd set as you were in the first set wins matches, and to win tournaments, you have to be as strong in the 5th match, as you were in the first matches. And, Nikki gets it!," her father Paul tells us. And at a very young age, she also knows the importance of a good diet to keep in peak form. She keeps a food journal…drinks lots of water, eats a lot of lean protein and fruits and veggies.And, eats all of that in seven or eight small meals per day. Her coach Denys Maasdorp, of Sarasota Racquet Club says, “"Better get her autograph now. Pretty soon it will cost you big money. This girl is incredible. She give me a run for my money!"” At eleven, she has won or placed 2nd or 3rd in a half dozen important youth tennis tournaments already, most of these just since July of this year! Nikki Yanez is a young phenom we expect to see and hear great things from in the sport of tennis. Great work Nikki!

When a 65-piece high school marching band and flag team lines the Ringling Bridge on Feb. 8, 2015, we don’t “got trouble in River City,” as Professor Harold Hill claims. What we’ll have is the Sarasota Music Half Marathon, the first citywide moving music festival. From high school marching bands to rock, country, soul and hip hop, participants and spectators will hear 16 local bands throughout the race course. Selby Gardens will host a “run through the grounds” at Mile 10, including a special Selby Spectator Zone and entertainment by the Booker High School Jazz band. Local organizers John Korff, Tony Driscoll and Molly Jackson designed the event to involve the community, feature local talent, and support local non-profits. With more than 1000 participants currently registered and a cap of 2,000, they predict a sellout. “It’s great to see such widespread support and interest and we look forward to showcasing Sarasota’s music and cultural diversity to participants and spectators every step of the way,” Korff says. Billed as a Sarasota Signature Event, the race and course will start and finish at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The “13.1 Mile Moving party” will feature more bands, entertainment, and along-the-route activities than any other half marathon in the country. Healthy Fast Casual Food Comes to UTC Who says fast food can’t be healthy? The folks at Chicken Kitchen happily challenge that sigma with their selections of free-ranged, hormone-free, anti-bioticfree, chicken, done right, done slow, and done with flair. The new franchise opened recently near the new University Town Center Mall. Firefighters, teachers and EMT workers receive 10 percent off. “It’s a simple concept,” says co-owner Gris Bettle. “We’re not flame-broiled. They’re chicken breasts that are lemon-based marinated overnight. They take one hour to cook on our massive grill.” Patrons view a bit of theater watching four chopping stations, where workers remove fresh chicken off the grill, slice it in half, then chop into cubes. They serve it over yellow or brown rice, vegetarian black beans, or in a wrap. Dark meat lovers can take a chance on the chicken marinated and baked in teriyaki sauce. Add a made-from-scratch special recipe sauce, such as the signature mustard curry sauce. Or, try garlic cilantro, vinaigrette, bbq, chipotle lime, or more. Soldiering on at Crossfit Lakewood Ranch Boot Camp Classes Families now can participate in intensive boot camp classes at Crossfit Lakewood Ranch, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:30 PM. The facility offers combinations of bodyweight exercises, weightlifting and cardio intervals to challenge the body and mind. Hug-A-Tree 5K & 1 Mile Walk It’s time to take the family out to the park and hug a tree. That tree is in Payne Park. Families can participate in the inaugural Hug-A-Tree 5K & 1 Mile Fun Walk held on Sat. February 28th, sponsored by Fit941 Magazine and Ecofest. Payne Park borders 2050 Adams lane, and Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, Fl. Lisette Riveron, Race Director for Hug-A-Tree, and Marla, the director of Ecofest, wanted to produce an activity to enlighten “the importance of being environmentally friendly and getting the kids to understand how blessed we are when we see a tree,” says Riveron. Bring a stroller, whether for pets or kids – it’s pet-friendly. The event benefits the Suncoast Waterkeeper, to protect and restore coastal water ways. The chip-timed 5K includes a challenging, partial cross country course, which veers off the beaten path, goes up a hill and through grassy areas. Children will participate in four heats. Awards, a race party and a special take-home prize for all finishers: A sapling to plant. Riveron says, “The true essence of the race is that everybody who leaves there will have something.” She hopes the “something,” whether from the vendors’ products, or the information about recycling from Waste Management, will stick in the minds of the youth. “We want to raise the questions, are we using too much water? What kinds of soaps are we using? We want to plant those (mental) saplings in them, so as they go forward, they’ll think about the environment.” To register online, go to active.com. Success Story Two New Locations to SUP SUP Sarasota, a paddleboard and Kayak sales and rental company, has opened two new locations where they will offer rentals, instruction classes, and water-based tours to the public. Additionally, they will continue their mobile paddleboard rental business, which is currently run out of 422 Burns Court in Sarasota.

NOW Meet Stephanie “SASS” Sasnett. Stephanie is a physical therapists assistant here in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. She has struggled with her weight for most of her life. “It didn’t completely slow me when I was younger…I played softball and was a cheerleader in high school…but as I entered my junior year in high school, I began to balloon up, and by the end of my senior year, I tipped the scales at 280lbs! I was 5’3” tall. I was huge!” As she entered into the physical therapy program in college, a professor began advising Stephanie on proper diet, portion control and burning calories. In 2007 she made the conscious effort to limit calories to 900 to 1000 per day, and began walking 15 minutes. Her walks turned from 15 minutes to 30, then became 30 minute jogs. That turned into 5k races each weekend. She began to get a little addicted to the exercise. Along with the races now, she added in some muscle work. Her diet consisted of lean forms of protein and she began to eliminate all dairy and starches…focused on vegetables and lots of water. The weight began to drop, she added some muscle tone. Running and hot yoga are her favorite forms of exercise. She had broken through all the plateau levels that once stopped her in her tracks. Instead of picking a weight target as her goal, she picks activities to complete instead. Her next goal? The Sarasota Y Super Bowl Tri X. This is a minitriathlon that Fit941 Magazine will be sponsoring. Look for Stephanie and cheer her on as she crosses that finish line! Stephanie is truly inspirational. She has now lost about 115 lbs. There is a little more to go to be where she wants to be, and she knows that to get there, it’s never a straight line. She looked at her health and took into consideration the physical limitations that carrying all that extra weight around would have on her ability to do her job properly, and did something about it. Going forward, she plans to challenge herself physically and to keep finding new and fun ways to get leaner, stronger, and healthier. We’re rooting for ya! 12 JAN/FEB 2015

Open Water Swim Challenge Ever wanted to take a swim around beautiful Lido Key? You’ll be able to do that and more, when Swim Without Limits, Inc. hosts the 1st Annual Swim Around Lido Key 7-Mile Open Water Swim held Sun. Apr. 12. The course begins and finishes at the Lido Beach Hotel.

This community event benefits the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, the charity arm of the U.S. Masters Swimming. Their purpose is to advocate and raise awareness, and to serve as a resource for programs providing adult learn-to-swim lessons. The race is open to all members of U.S. Masters Swimming and all Athlete members of USA Swimming. The entry is open to solo swimmers and 2-person relay teams. Non-members may pay a one-day membership fee of $20. One-day memberships are not available for swimmers under the age of 18. Each swimmer will have a kayak escort to provide safety, navigation, and nutrition to the swimmer. Swimmers can enter as either a solo swimmer or as a 2-person relay, where each person swims and paddles the kayak.

Environeers is Expanding Their Inventory, Adding Fitness Classes

Definition Fit Adds A Little Madness to Working Out Bring madness and take it out on two new fitness classes at Definition Fit in Sarasota. The new Mexican Madness class with Javier Torres is an MMS style workout using heavy bags, weights, bands, ropes and mitts. The class called Strength, Stamina and Stability with Dave Weiner, is a course designed to help build stronger, leaner, balanced bodies. “It incorporates TRX, BOSU, VIPR, Sandbags and more!” says Daemian Mains, the co-owner of Definition Fit. “Lots of sweat and intensity in both these high-energy classes!” These classes meet at a variety of times. They’ve also begun offering morning fitness classes on Saturday to accompany the new offerings. “We are adding women’s active wear … the main thrust for us is premium yoga pants, and we’re bringing in accessories around that,” says Stan Tracht, the CoOwner of Environeers. “Basically, we’re calling it a pants bar. A shopper who knows about our store comes in, and we’ll carry the best brands on the market.” The store will carry Karma, Onzie, Beyond Yoga, and other top women’s brands. In an effort to support this launch, Environeers will also be offering yoga classes on Saturday mornings when the store opens at 10 a.m. Tracht says the classes are open to all ability levels, adding that Environeers aims to be as open an un-intimidating as possible. Uppercut Offers Sunday Morning Cardio Classes

Ninjas in Our Midst “The course is going to expose your weaknesses. The course doesn’t lie... It is there. Now you have to figure out how to attack it … and in Ninja Warrior there’s no do-over. Once you’re done, you’re done for the year ." merican Ninja Warrior is set to kick off its seventh season early this year. Aspiring champions all across the country are training hard and submitting entry tapes, hoping their personality and athletic prowess are enough to earn them one of the few limited spots. Ninja Warrior is a grueling obstacle course event that originated in Japan and has since expanded to the United States. While the Japanese version of the televised contest has seen champions, no one at home has ever earned the ultimate prize: $500 thousand and the prestigious title of ‘American Ninja Warrior’.

A

The course is a race against the clock loaded with obstacles. Would-be Ninja Warriors must scale curved walls, jump between canted platforms, make vertical leaps while dangling from poles, and do some other truly unbelievable things in order to traverse the course. Competing requires superior physical strength and endurance, and only those with the best runtimes move onto the next stage, of which there are a total of four. A single slip means falling into cold water in front of millions of television viewers, with no re-dos until next year. To date, no American Ninja Warrior participant has made it beyond the third stage.

Failing to see a champion crowned only drives more people to want to compete each year, and it motivates veterans to continue making runs. Those who don’t see the games through to the end seem to enjoy the challenge and experience that comes from competing on television with other athletes from all walks of life. Despite their collective defeat, American Ninja Warrior veterans are a sea of smiling faces and determined attitudes. Many cite it as one of the most fun experiences of their life, resulting in lifelong friendships bound by a sense of unity. “It’s a good community, we ninja warriors,” says Ed Lorenzo, who competed in American Ninja Warrior 5. “We all get along. Because at the end of the day, I’m not competing against (another competitor), I’m competing against the course. … I always tell everyone, ‘we’re in this together’. We’re all still in the same boat, man. None of us has ever conquered it. … Here in the United States, nobody has ever made it past round three, and that unites us.” Ed and his wife, Elizabeth, have made Ninja Warrior their full-time career by opening Fit Lorenzo in 2010. In 2012, they began building a Ninja Warrior course at the 7500 sq. ft. facility, which is located in Palmetto. Inside the walls of Team Lorenzo there have been past Fit941.com

competitors from all over the country, in addition to new faces who hope to one day be the first person to conquer the elusive fourth stage and bring home the grand prize. One such contender is Colleen McCormack, 27, who trains at the Lorenzo gym once a week as she prepares to compete for the first time next season. Colleen is a Florida native who works out nearly every day, using fitness as a positive outlet as she copes with a major family tragedy. She believes her story will inspire others, and hopes to share it on a national stage. But there’s one more reason in particular why Coleen stands out from other Ninja Warrior hopefuls: “I actually don’t (have any obstacle course experience). I’ve done races, but my only sort of athletic background is cheerleading in high school,” she laughs. While it is true that most American Ninja Warrior competitors do have a variety of obstacle course races under their belt, the community is made up of people with diverse athletic backgrounds in competitive running, CrossFit, parkour, martial arts, college football, and much more.

“But this (past year when I participated in American Ninja Warrior), I flew through the course, and it felt like it didn’t take any effort. I ended up slipping on something silly. My shoe was wet. The guy who ran before me cannonballed on the cross-steps and soaked the cross-steps. So, I had to run with wet shoes and slipped.” Other veterans have taken to training exclusively in their back yard. Sean Morris, 27, has turned his Sarasota home into his own Ninja Warrior course, complete with 18-foot rock wall, ground-level trampoline, slacklines, and an indoor climbing cave. He invites the public to stop by and try it out. “We have an open-door policy – feel free to go climbing whenever you want. We’ve maintained that for six years. I’ve gone on television and said ‘yeah, if you want to come by, we’re down in Sarasota,’” Sean says. “We take this very


open-ended, laid-back approach and it provides nothing but a more enjoyable life.” Sean is a media producer and programmer, describing himself playfully as a “Jackass of all trades” since he has also made time to compete in every American Ninja Warrior competition to date. Sean has consistently made it to the stage three finals every season before being eliminated, making him one of the most accomplished veterans in the country. While he’s presently on the fence about competing again, Sean plans to stay active in American Ninja Warrior, hoping to adopt a behind-the-scenes role in the show’s production. For now, he stays busy with his developing business and by hosting education seminars that encourage kids to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle. And to those aspiring Ninja Warriors out there, Sean says this about competing on television: “The course is purely difficult because you have to do it on the first try under an immense amount of pressure. It's careless errors that take 95 percent of the people out. Nothing except getting too nervous and doing something silly." Other veterans in the community echo this sentiment, saying that every athlete will learn from trial and error, and many won’t find their legs until after they’ve slipped and fallen into the waters or found themselves stuck on an obstacle after time has run out.

The FMS is used extensively in professional sports.

Now, Studio South Fitness has implemented the screening to identify the client’s asymmetries and limitations or movement patterns and deficiencies, and determine body alignment, so that they can be addressed. The FMS creates a baseline to mark progress, and provide a means to measure performance. It tells the trainer the client’s readiness to perform, so that the trainer can create a specific program, with customized exercises, to reach realistic goals. Lisa Hutson had “never worked out a day in my life,” she says. “I was shocked that I was not intimidated
by the process. Now, my
husband and I work out three times per week. Let’s start at the very beginning. There is prenatal yoga. After the birth, how about Strollersize, Mommy and Me classes, from walking with the pram to yoga. Not enough? Pushing yourself is as easy as turning the knob and it’s your choice whether to sit or stand during sprints. There’s traditional spin and at One Cycle, try out a bike that even moves side-to-side.

old onto your seats. It’s going to be a bumpy flu season. According to the Center for Disease Control, “It’s too early to say for sure that this will be a severe flu season, but Americans should be prepared,” says CDC director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. Especially since recent reports of the vaccine from last year’s viruses have shown a reduced effect on some of these “drift variant” flu viruses. And, with so many and varied viruses, the current vaccine covers only a handful of strains.

It’s the season to bolster your immune system, no matter what the news reports. First, researchers still want to know, how does the immune system work with other systems? The immune system is made up of white blood cells, called lymphocytes that mature and develop in a chest organ called the thymus. Referred to as “T-cells,” they navigate through the blood and lymph nodes, scanning for cellular abnormalities 34 JAN/FEB 2015

and infections. “Killer T-cells” destroy cells that are infected with germs, damaged by cancer, or in other ways. “Helper T-cells” activate and help other immune cells that ingest germs or make antibodies. Experts recommend some healthy strategies to boost it up when you feel something’s coming on.

SLEEP

Get it, and no less than seven hours a night. Susan Zafarlotfi, PhD, clinical director of the Institute for Sleep and Wake Disorders at Hackensack University Medical Center, says a strong immune system may fight off illness with little or no sleep. “But if you have a weak immune system, you will likely be more prone to infection, if you are not getting enough sleep,” she says. During sleep, the immune system releases proteins called cytokines. Cytokines are signalers and can trigger a response to Fit941.com

disease. Without sleep, production of these protective cytokines decreases, and so do infection-fighting antibodies. “One of the things that happens when we sleep is that we can get a better fever response,” says Diwakar Balachandran, MD, director of the Sleep Center at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. “This is why fevers tend to rise at night. But, if we are not sleeping, our fever reaction is not primed,” and we open the doors to infection.

EXERCISE

Simply, exercise prolongs life. But is too much a good or a bad thing for the immune system? Moderate: good. But, high intensity work outs, involving different actions and paces, could actually decrease the amount of white blood cells circulating through the body and increase the presence of stress-related hormones. Dr. David C. Nieman says in Sports


Medicine that killer T-cells “exhibit the greatest changes in response to marathon competition, both in terms of numbers and function.” Such changes include stress hormone and cytokine concentrations, body temperature changes, increases in blood flow and dehydration. “During this ‘open window’ of immune dysfunction (which may last between 3 and 72 hours,), viruses and bacteria may gain a foothold, increasing the risk of infection,” says Niemen.

Scientists at Harvard Medical School are finding evidence of a relationship between digestion and the immune system. Probiotic bacteria, “good” living microorganisms prevent pathogens from adhering to the intestinal tract. Research shows that these bacteria correct deficiencies and increase the numbers of certain T-cells. Probiotics may prevent respiratory tract infections (common cold, influenza) and other infectious diseases. Probiotics are found in fermented milk products, or yeast, and dietary supplements. Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., of the Mayo clinic, suggests that probiotics may help treating diarrhea, preventing and treating vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections; treating irritable bowel syndrome and other intestinal infections; and preventing or reducing viruses, such as colds and flu. Vegetables and grains provide vitamins and minerals, but if you’re not getting enough, it’s time to take a multivitamin. Vitamin A deficiency may impair the immune system, as it tends to affect T-cells and cytokines. Vitamin B6 deficiency can prevent lymphocytes from maturing and forming T-and B-cells. Vitamin D, which is produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight, signals antibodies to combat the Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Whether Vitamin D has similar ability to fight off other diseases, or taking Vitamin D in supplement form, is beneficial, is under current research. Zinc deficiency interrupts the proper function of T-cells. Limit zinc intake to 15-25 mg per day. Too much zinc can inhibit the function of the immune system.

Six Things to Do BEFORE You Start a Diet by Chelsea McCutchin

he “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” has given way to one of the most hopeful. A host of New Year’s resolutions are waiting, and since the number-one resolution is weight loss, here are six tips for before your diet begins.

T

IDENTIFY WHY YOU’RE DIETING

How did you get to a place where you’re unhappy with your current weight? Have you been unhappy with the scale for as long as you can remember? Did your clothes get a little snug through 2014? Think about the path that led you to a resolution of dieting. If this isn’t the first time you’ve made this resolution, consider why you haven’t had success in years past, and more importantly, how you can avoid staring down the same resolution for 2016.

DECONSTRUCT YOUR CURRENT EATING HABITS Did you gain weight as a food quality issue? A quantity issue? Both? Most people have developed a weight problem because they simply aren’t thinking about the amount or type of food that they’re eating. A great way to start is to track your food for a week before your diet starts. The key to this exercise is to not change your eating habits for a week, and to view your food diary without judgement. You want this to be an exercise in honesty, and in self-assessment, both of which are pivotal to long-term success with feeding your body what it needs to be healthier.

BE REALISTIC What if you hate Brussel sprouts? What about a nightly week with your friends? Dieting shouldn’t be about suffering through a plate of food you dislike, or sipping seltzer while your friends split a bottle of wine. You’re not conditioned to live in misery, and taking charge of your health shouldn’t be miserable. Your new style of healthy eating will require changes, of course, but if you know that you won’t stick to your green juice for breakfast, replace it with something equally healthy, but more satisfying to you. BE PATIENT Chances are you didn’t gain all the weight you want to drop in a week. As it likely took years for your body to gain the weight, it will take a while for your mind to learn the new habits for you to lose the weight. The most important thing to remember is that you’re relearning how to nourish yourself, how to love yourself, and get past the obstacles, physically and emotionally, that have kept the weight on you. Being patient with yourself, and your body is a learned habit; just as important as coming home to cook clean food instead of going to the drive-thru.

Diet extends so far beyond food, into emotional baggage, our social situations, and even our family dynamics, so each time you listen to what your body needs, each time you feed yourself with nutrients and protein instead of salt and sugar, you’re winning the battle against unhealthy choices, and moving towards a lighter you.

BUILD A SUPPORT NETWORK As you embark on this journey to a new you, remember that you aren’t alone. If you don’t have a support system in place through friends or family, consider joining a gym, or an online group for weight loss and accountability. edical doctors, fitness gurus and media outlets all advise potential new exercisers to get a health assessment prior to starting a new exercise routine. Many adults ignore this advice assuming it does not apply to them. But regardless of age and fitness level (which people tend to overestimate), it is wise to approach a new exercise program with knowledge of one’s overall capacity.

A medical professional or a specially trained fitness instructor should do a health assessment. However, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), some fitness businesses have tended to move away from incorporating assessments and simply use a self-administered questionnaire. While not everyone agrees on what a comprehensive health assessment is, there is universal acceptance that one is useful for the general population, and mandatory if there is a indication of a 38 JAN/FEB 2015

medical problem that might be adversely effected by physical exercise.

Types of Health Screening A typical health assessment performed by a medical professional usually includes a measurement of the patient’s vital signs such as, blood pressure, heart rate and cardiovascular fitness, all measured at rest as well as after moderate exercise. A doctor may also include an echocardiogram or an electrocardiogram, and in some cases, a cardiac stress test. Anyone who has been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, or is at risk for it, should have such tests prior to engaging in physical activity. A comprehensive screening might also include an evaluation of the patient’s body mass, flexibility and muscle strength. The assessment provider can decide what parameters are appropriate based on the patient’s history and the type of exercise program.

A functional assessment is more comprehensive and in addition to the above, also focuses on the patient’s perceived level of health, lifestyle, nutrition, activity, sleep patterns and other indicators. With this type of assessment, major body systems involved with exercise, including respiratory, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems are evaluated for functionality.

Fitness testing and Assessment Aside from testing with a medical professional or fitness instructor, several services are available that can help with a personal evaluation. AVOIDING BOOMERITIS by David Sugar, MD ome say that 50 is the new 30, but, was it that hard to get moving in the mornings at 30? Joints ache, muscles are stiff. These are the suffering signs of “Boomeritis,” a physical, seemingly falling-apart-at-the seams malady that afflicts those born between 1946 and 1964.

S

Today, Baby Boomers participate in sports and exercise much more than the generations that preceded them. Prior generations may have labored hard at their job, but, Baby Boomers ushered in the fitness craze of the 1970s and 1980s, adding fun to attaining a fit body. For more than four decades, these people have been physically active. We all want to be able to do at 45, what we could do at 25, and do at 65, what we could do at 45. Ironically, decades of “fitness” can result in overuse and gradual wear and tear. Injuries that occur may include tendonitis, arthritis (wearing out of the cartilage of the joints), tendon tears and stress fractures. Muscle tissue decreases in elasticity and eventually forms scar tissue, causing stiffness. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that nearly 241,000 individuals, age 50 and older, sustained exercise and exercise equipment-related injuries in 2012. That figure accounts for those who sought treatment, not those who did not, nor those who treated themselves. Injuries also may derive from playing “weekend warriors,” by exercising too much on Saturday and Sunday and paying for it until Wednesday. The key to balance out a long life by staying active, and perhaps even increasing an exercise routine, is to find a healthy, preventative fitness plan. Listen to your body and never play through pain. First, if you have any medical condition, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Next follow these suggestions to stay healthy: Warm up before physical activity. Leave the stretching for after the work out. Warm up differs from stretching. To get muscles moving and warmed up, stimulate your muscles by moving slowly. This will stretch them in a dynamic manner. After physical activity, stretch and hold the stretch for a longer period of time. Devote at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, and avoid “weekend warrior” syndrome. A surge in physical activity on weekends doesn’t make up for couch potato relaxation during 42 JAN/FEB 2015

week days. Keep a steady routine of some kind of movement every day. To avoid injuries and develop proper form, become proficient in the sports you love and participate in. Take lessons from a professional, even if you have been playing these sports for long periods of time. If you perform a variety of athletic activities, ranging from aerobics to sports, consider purchasing cross-training shoes. Try on different brands with the socks you would be wearing and ensure the shoes should be properly fitted to the width of your foot. Soles should be flexible near the ball of the foot, provide cushioning and arch support. Never break-in new athletic shoes; they should be stable from the onset to your 50th hour wearing them. Higharched feet should be comfortable and well-supported during workouts; low-arched feet need greater support under the ball of the foot. Replace the shoes when you notice unevenly worn soles or the backs of the shoes appear to be broken down. Throw out shoes after 300 miles; if cross-training shoes, toss after more than 100 hours. Cardio equipment wears out faster than other equipment. Mechanical and electrical components can wear out and must be repaired. Sturdy strength equipment takes longer to wear out. Moving parts can wear out faster, however, and should be replaced every 10-20 years. Build up strength training and endurance training gradually. Obey the 10 percent rule by increasing your activity by 10 percent at a time.

Balance your activities. Focus on strength, flexibility and endurance/cardiovascular fitness. Practice a fitness program that includes weight training, stretching and some form of cardiovascular exercise. Mix it up. Avoid injuries by varying exercises that target different muscle groups. The concept of “cross training” emphasizes the whole body work out, therefore, work on one muscle group one day; another muscle group another day. Nutrition. Find a well-balanced diet that works for you. Healthy food is key to giving your body the energy and nutrients it needs to tolerate exercise and continue to feel fit. Listen to your body. When pain persists or compromises your ability to perform, change your routine or seek medical assistance. Physical fitness alone does not guarantee a life free of injuries, aches or pains. But, by following some of these principles, refining your program, learning the safest way to perform exercises, and adhering to medical and fitness experts’ advice, you may combat Boomeritis. Fit2Run, The Runner’s Superstore, will produce the 7th Annual Fit2Run Robinson Preserve 5K run, now featuring a highly anticipated 10K course. The familyfriendly race takes place at twilight on Friday, March 27. Winners receive cash awards; a post race party will be held alongside the 120-year-old Valentine House. Enjoy a buffet, beverages, beer, a DJ, a live band, and more.

“This event is known for its colorful shirts that can be seen around town; its beautiful race course, and spectacular postrace party,” says Doug Schiller, Race Director. The funds generated from the race go toward the continuing management and improvement at Robinson Preserve, and to Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee. William C. Robinson and son, Parks Robinson, owners of the specialty running retailer, Fit2Run, wanted to host an event benefiting local non-profits. Meals on Wheels PLUS provides numerous programs to help the community, ensuring food for those in need, both young and old. Programs include The Food Bank of Manatee, Grandma’s Goodies, Senior Wheels, Adult Day Services, and Renaissance on 9th, the Senior Enrichment Center, and Turner Ballroom. Charity Navigator named it a four-star charity, and Tampa Bay Business Journal named it 2013 Non-Profit of the Year. The organization hosts the dinner at the Valentine House, and offers their vehicles to shuttle 44 JAN/FEB 2015

people to and from the race venue and parking at nearby neighborhoods. Last year, close to 2000 runners and many more spectators participated in the Fit2Run Robinson Preserve Race. In 2013 it was the largest chip-timed 5K in both Manatee and Sarasota counties. “We have had as many as 200 children participate in the kids’ events,” says Justin James, Fit2Run Marketing Events Manager. “We have averaged 40 percent growth each year, over the past six years. That tells us, this is an event our community wants to participate in, and share with their family and friends; to support their own health, and the continued services of these great non-profit organizations.” Because popularity has increased participation, the race organizers introduced four wave starts, with the first beginning at 6:45 PM. Other waves follow, a minute apart. The children’s races, which start and finish at the same finish line as the 5K and 10K, include 100 meters for 3-4-year-olds; 200 meters for 5-6-year-olds; 400 meters for 7-9-year-olds; and 800 meters for 10-12-year-olds. Any age may participate in the 5K or 10K race. As it is a twilight race, 10K runners will have a time limit. The family event invites walkers, people with strollers and runners with dogs on a leash. Tampa Bay, Manatee River and Perico Bayou border the preserve, donated by the William C. Robinson family, and for years the property had been used as farmland. The Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast and Manatee County initially joined forces to create the preserve. William C. Robinson,

then President of Robinson Farms, had released a statement, saying about the donated land, “It is because of the foundation and the county’s commitment to the environment that the residents of Manatee County will have a community gem to enjoy and enrich our lives for years and years to come.” Currently the interior features hiking paths, kayak and canoe waterways, with jumping mullet and hundreds of species of fish and marine life. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the picnic spots, a primitive campground, mangrove forests and a 53foot tower with a view of Tampa Bay. It is home to threatened and endangered species, such as the American oystercatcher, bald eagle, black skimmer, brown pelican, little blue heron, tricolored heron, reddish egret, white ibis, wood stork, and other marine animals. “The 10K course will pass by an active bald eagle’s nest,” says James. “They had built it along the 5K route in a dead tree and it didn’t’ last. But now the nest is in a place where our 10K runners will see it.” James says park rangers, staff and volunteers of the Manatee County Natural Resources department are currently creating the 10K race trail following old Florida Power & Lighting roads, and old nursery roads. The 10K race follows some of the 5K route and additionally runs throughout the entire property, almost to Manatee Avenue, and then loops back. “They will see a lot of untouched preserve that the public has not yet seen before,” says James.
