YOUR GOAL S

FASTER!

Unlock Your Potential for a Healthy Lifestyle Diet

Exercise

Personalize your diet with genetics. The way we eat, how our bodies process foods, and our resulting health are related to our genetics. Using your own genetic information we determine the best diet for you to maintain your optimal metabolism, lose weight and improve your health.

Exercise has long been shown to provide many health benefits. Many studies have found a link between genetics and exercise. Your genes can affect your chances of losing weight, having improved cholesterol levels, and other health benefits in response to exercise. BoostFit tests for a number of genes related to exercise and optimal performance.

Eating Behavior Traits Eating behaviors can have as much effect on health as our diet. Some of our behaviors are learned over time and some are influenced by our genetics. Through the BoostFit report, we describe certain genetic markers that are associated with eating behaviors. With this information, you and your physician can modify your lifestyle to help you achieve or maintain health and wellness.

Metabolic Health Factors Being overweight or obese is linked to many health conditions. Obesity leads to negative impacts on a person’s metabolic system, such as decreased levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and elevated levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, as well as elevated blood sugar and triglycerides. These adverse metabolic effects are precursors to metabolic syndrome, as well as health conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Call Now to get Your Personalized Report!

Your Body and Weight Your weight can be influenced by many genes. Our test includes genetic markers associated with metabolism, the tendency to regain the weight you have lost, as well as a predisposition to obesity.

Food Reactions How you may respond to some foods can be linked to your genetics. We currently screen for genes related to caffeine, bitter and sweet taste, as well as lactose intolerance and alcohol flush.

Nutritional Needs Vitamins are an important part of your health. Our test includes genetic markers associated with your likelihood of having lower levels of certain antioxidants and nutrients such as folate and vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, C, D and E.

HOLIDAY 2017

A

nother holiday season is upon us. If you are like me you, the extra festivities and gift giving can be a little intimidating. Keeping up with work, household duties, and fitness fills most of my free time without throwing in holiday extras. In this issue of Fit941 we have a few ways to help out. If you don’t have time to think about the perfect gift, we have some great ideas given to us by local experts. They have provided several gifts that are in demand this season, and they promote health and fitness going into the New Year. If you find that your exercise suffers during November and December, and you just can’t get into the gym like you normally do, give body weight exercises a try. No barbells or dumbbells needed, and as local personal trainer John Schaser points out, the benefits are noteworthy. Just ask an active gymnast. Another great way I’ve found to stick to a exercise routine during the holidays is to set a very specific goal to attain by the end of the year. For me, it’s a challenging CrossFit goal this year. Handstand walking is one of the only movements I have not mastered, and by golly I’m going to meet my goal by the end of the year. In the past I have used a local race or competition as a tool for staying fit. Pick a fun holiday run like the Haven Jingle and Jog 5k or the Sunshine Master’s competition on December 2nd to keep you working towards a better, healthier version of you. We have chosen to poke fun at the inevitable holiday weight gain on our cover this issue, but we are excited to cover a smarter way to approach dieting in the New Year. Instead of guessing about which diet will work for you, technology can now steer you in the direction that makes sense for you. Genetic testing can not only tell you which form of diet your body will respond better to, but will also inform you of which foods and vitamins you have intolerances to, or process less favorably. And studies are showing that it makes for a more effective long-term approach to weight loss and health. We feel extremely blessed here at Fit941 to be a part of such a wonderful community of health and wellness. On behalf of myself and the staff, we want to wish you the healthiest and happiest year to come. Happy Holidays,

W

e are sad to report that as of this issue we will no longer be found in Crunch Fitness locations in Sarasota and Manatee counties. In the week before deadline, Fit941 magazine was asked to remove our publication from the three local Crunch Fitness locations. After more than two years of circulation in Crunch Fitness, editorial coverage and an advertising relationship, Fit941 was asked to exchange advertising free of charge for distribution access to Crunch members. Fit941 declined to provide free advertising to Crunch Fitness West Florida and was asked to immediately remove magazines from the facilities. Geoff Dyer, Crunch Fitness West Florida President stated, “We are not comfortable promoting all of the other fitness options described in the magazine to our members.” Since our beginning, Fit941 magazine’s mission has been to proactively educate the local community about all of the local fitness options available in the 941 area code in order to promote a healthier lifestyle for its residents and visitors. While it can be disheartening to have a business like Crunch Fitness put its own interests above the community, we remain grateful that over 400 local businesses support and promote our magazine and our mission. We hope that Crunch Fitness will remember its mantra (‘An unfiltered philosophy that drives us to create a community and a gym for all. No judgments means room for everyone, regardless of shape, size, age, race, gender or fitness level.’) and reconsider our inclusion in their facilities. For those who want to get involved, or current Crunch members who want to see our publication back in their gyms, please contact Crunch Fitness president Geoff Dyer at Geoff@AussieFit.net, or write to Crunch Fitness manager Marc Delisle at 4801 Peregrine Point Circle West, Sarasota, Florida 34231.

Sarasota YMCA Volunteers and Donors to Provide 500 Thanksgiving Meals to Families in Need

O

n Saturday, November 18, from 9:00am to noon, the Sarasota Family YMCA will be providing 500 Thanksgiving meals to families in need at the Frank G. Berlin, Sr. branch YMCA Bari Brooks Teen Center. These families are currently being served through Y programs such as Achievers, Operation Graduation and Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY). This is the 14th year that YMCA volunteers (run primarily by students) have passed out Thanksgiving meals to those in need, thanks to generous community donations. A special thank you to YMCA volunteer, Dan Dannheisser, for spearheading the fundraising campaign and to the Y Achievers students and youth from the Y Youth Shelter who will be distributing the dinners to the families in need. Thank you to Construction Supply of Southwest Florida for providing trucks to transport the Turkey dinners. Since starting the program, the Y has given out over 3,500 Thanksgiving meals. According to FeedingAmerica.org, one in six people in the U.S. face hunger, including one in five children. Providing Thanksgiving meals is just one of the ways the Y is helping to ensure that everyone has enough to eat. The Sarasota YMCA is a nonprofit committed to strengthening the community through youth development by nurturing the potential of every child and teen; healthy living by improving the community’s health and well-being; and social responsibility by giving back and providing support to our neighbors. Every day, we work to make sure that everyone regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. For more information visit sarasotaymca.org or call 941.951.2916.

ath & Racquet Fitness Club is one of Sarasota’s oldest and largest fitness facilities. Established in 1969, the club now boasts 29 tennis courts, 5 racquetball courts, 3 squash courts, a 40,000 square foot facility with a restaurant, pro-shop and fully equipped fitness center and a junior Olympic-sized pool. But the club is facing headwinds as it looks to the future with aging infrastructure and increased competition along with a central location that has been eyed for redevelopment. Now, the owners of Bath & Racquet have taken the first step to identify their plan for change. Their solution is to create a new health and fitness-focused residential community on the site that preserves much of the historic racquet club. Bath & Racquet sits on a parcel slightly larger than 12.5 acres on Robinson Street just east of U.S. 41 and south of Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota. The owners would like to develop a new community on the site with 150-180 residential units on the south and east property boundaries between the existing club and Trader Joes. The existing sport facility would be renovated. The plan is to retain up to 20 of the existing tennis courts and preserve 12 grand oak trees. To achieve these goals, the owners have filed an application with the city of Sarasota to authorize a comprehensive plan amendment to rezone the property to allow residential development and a Conditional Use Application to allow them to continue to operate the fitness club on the property. If approved, the plan envisions multistory buildings that are three to five stories. The units will include condominiums for sale as well as rentals. If Bath & Racquet’s plans come to fruition, Sarasota may see a true hybrid sport and residential community that is close to the beaches and downtown.

Boost Your Diet

A

fter the holidays, there is no longer a need to guess which diet or exercise routine will work for you. Instead of reaching for the latest fad, now you can choose the proper plan based on your genetic profile. And, it is backed up by clinical research—including a study at Stanford University that found people following a genetic-based diet plan lost 2.5 times the weight lost by people following standard diet plans not guided by the personal analysis. Boost! Wellness of Sarasota offers one of the only genetic tests geared specifically towards diet and exercise. A simple blood test can set you in the right direction towards a leaner you. Genetic markers can not only tell you which type of diet is best suited to your specific make up, but can also tell you which forms of exercise you respond best to, and which vitamins and supplements you are more likely to be deficit in. As a holiday special, Boost! Wellness is offering $50 off their DNA testing from now until January 15th for Fit941 readers.

Hidden River Trail Now Open to Cyclists

H

idden River Trail, the only east-west road between Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Lorraine Road, a planned alternative to the major thoroughfares of University Parkway and State Road 70 is now open to bicyclists after a long debated dispute. Construction plans for the road from more than a decade ago did not include bike lanes, instead calling for pedestrians and bicyclists to share a 10-foot-wide “multi-purpose path.” After the county received a complaint about bicyclists on the 10-foot-wide lanes used by vehicles, its traffic managers discovered that signs banning bicyclists on the road were missing. In March 2015, the county replaced the signs. Shortly after, the Village Idiots Cycling Club complained about the reinstituted ban. Finally, in late September, the County Commission decided to at last side with the bicyclists who prefer to use the street for safety reasons. Although golf carts will remain banned, bicyclists will be allowed to use the street as an alternative to the multi-use trail. For more information on bike-friendly routes in Manatee county, visit MyManatee. org. For more information on the Village Idiots Cycling club, visit VillageIdiotsCycling.com.

Patrick Sanders I love the Fit941 magazine. I am very much into fitness. I am 75 years old and have been exercising for most of my life. I was running marathons until my knees woudln't take it anymore. I now am in the gym 3 to 4 days a week. I bike ride with my grandson and play soccer and take hikes with him. I eat very healthy and weigh what I did when I graduated high school. I have not had a sick day in over 30 years. I believe your encouraging diet and exercise is a great service to us. Health = Happy = Long Life. Yours, Patrick Sanders The staff at Fit941 would like to thank Patrick for his submission. It is letters like this that make it a pleasure to put together every issue. We are constantly amazed at how many people not only recognize our publication, but go out of their way to tell us about their personal fitness journey when they run into us. If you have a story you want to tell. A great success, a challenge you were able to overcome, whatever it is you want us to know, submit your story to publisher@ Fit941.com. Benderson Adds New Activities

T

he 2017 World Rowing Championships have passed and Nathan Benderson Park (NBP), 941s premier outdoor exercise area, is adding more fitness options for visitors. New programs started more than a year ago with learn-to-row and dragon boat paddling. ChiWalking is now also offered at the park. ChiWalking is an exciting approach to health, fitness and well-being through the practice of walking. The technique blends walking with Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art known for creating balance strength and improved cognition. The technique emphasizes the proper biomechanics of walking, including: good posture, loose joints, engaging core muscles, and relaxing your arms and legs. It’s easier on your body and helps improve and eliminate the aches, pains and discomfort of walking incorrectly. You’ll overcome poor movement habits that can lead to long term injury, such as knee or hip problems. NBP now offers equipment rentals including single and double kayaks, stand up paddleboards and single sculls. Renters need to be 12 and over, and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All single scull renters must have either completed the NBP Learn to Row, or complete a Captain's Test (conducted by NBP staff) at a $35 charge. YOUR DNA and YOUR Diet Plan

IT’S TIME TO GET SMART! e have smart phones, appliances and cars, and now is the time for smart diets—based on DNA testing. This process shows what kind of diet and fitness regimen is best suited to your individual metabolism. No more guessing or grabbing on to the latest fad diet, sensational fasting program or emotional appeal from Marie Osmond. It really is time to get smart … The folks at Boost! Wellness in downtown Sarasota pride themselves on giving clients “solid knowledge,” as nurse Stacy Koski describes it. “The first step is a blood draw with the results coming back in about 10 days,” she said. The 30-page lab report gives a detailed analysis of a person’s DNA profile, drug and food interactions, nutritional deficiencies and specific needs in terms of carbs, fats and protein sources. The professional counselors at Boost! Wellness review the findings then have a oneon-one counseling session to explain the findings and make detailed recommendations. They help identify the best diet for each client—low-fat, low-carb, balanced or Mediterranean. They also strategize about indicated or preferred needs toward gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian food choices.

Koski said, “We try to help people navigate their best diet and workout regimen, but we also know we have to be practical. We will propose a gradual process to adapt to the findings. We have to organize actions so that people are comfortable with the plan.” She compared the process to a new runner trying a short distance to acclimate, instead of going for a marathon on the first day with new shoes. “It really helps to make gradual changes if you really want to succeed,” she said. The counseling also includes recommendations in terms of sleep, concentration and meditation. It is really a holistic approach to lifestyle and fitness. Koski explained that diet, attitude and rest are vital and equal considerations in this kind of counseling. Dealing with one 40-year-old male who had a 300-level cholesterol reading, they found his preferred athletic-style diet of brown rice, chicken and broccoli was too heavy with carbs and protein. He was weaned off the animal protein-heavy diet (but was still allowed meat twice a week) and within two months his non-drug assisted cholesterol reading dropped more than 100 points.

The testing process also identifies food and drug allergies that might be challenging a body’s natural functions. For example, dairy products might be causing an unnatural water weight gain, and vitamin supplements might not be absorbed readily in everybody. Koski says people need the sciencedriven information to make good choices. And it is backed up by clinical research—including a study at Stanford University that found people following a genetic-based diet plan lost 2.5 times the weight lost by people following standard diet plans not guided by the personal analysis. “Diet foods and one-sizefits-all plans are really just Band-Aids,” said Koski. We offer information, support and smart advice to help folks find vitality for life,” she said. A similar smart approach is the basis of dietary counseling at Whole Self Weight Loss in Bradenton. Nutrition coach Michelle Powell works with cardiology specialist Stanley Forwand, M.D., to help each individual client improve his or her choices related to body, mind and spirit. She said, “I try to help the client figure out what works for them through individualized coaching sessions and, if desired, a DNA-type intolerance test which can help find out if there are certain foods causing inflammation in the body, which can cause health issues and hinder weight loss." She also emphasized that weight loss, or fat loss, can be accomplished while eating real, natural food that the body can use as fuel, without starving the body of nutrients it needs. She said, “I encourage my clients to get their head and their heart ‘in the game’ because the mouth is right in between those two things and once you get those in agreement, you can do what's necessary with the mouth!” According to the group’s Web site, while only two percent of the population has actual food allergies, 45 percent of all people have food intolerance that can be manifested in many ways, including digestion and respiration, or energy level and psychology. The DNA testing can give clear supporting evidence of challenges that can be corrected. Along with using the valuable tools like DNA and metabolic testing, Powell truly believes in the team approach forged by her clients and herself. “When ‘I’ is replaced with ‘we,’ even illness becomes ‘wellness,’” she said. With the new technologies and old-fashioned teamwork, a healthier you may be just a phone call away. For more information on Boost! Wellness, 2195 Ringling Blvd, Sarasota, call 941-363-1889. They also have biking tours through the Canadian Rockies, Cuba, Bermuda and Costa Rica. Start dreaming now, folks! A little closer to home, maybe you should check out the yoga retreat at the Sarasota Hyatt Regency. And if love is sometimes best expressed through food, what better way to delight your significant other than with a week or month’s worth of healthy meals delivered to his/ her front door. Several delivery services are in 941 territory, including Cornerstone Nutrition in Sarasota and Above the Grain in Lakewood Ranch. If your loved one had committed to a wellness lifestyle, a great starting point is an appointment at Boost! Wellness in Sarasota. This group conducts DNA testing to identify food and drug challenges and then makes recommendations that will help with digestion, energy, workout regimens and attitude adjustments. For a baseline statement about health, this is a great starting point.

Some folks are in a recovery mode, so a gift for them might be cryotherapy at BluFit in Sarasota. They have therapies for specific issues related to weight loss, pain management, athletic performance, beauty and wellness. Make your holiday bright with a smoothing skincare duo. The set includes top selling Exlinea Smoothing Serum & Ideal Complex Eye Gel packaged in a luxury cosmetic bag. Available at all three Massage Envy locations, or at MassageEnvy. com. We asked area fitness- and health-related businesses what they recommend for gift-givers wanting to enhance the wellness of people on their list. Maybe these ideas will work for you … and them! Stan Tracht at Environeers in Sarasota had some dandy ideas, starting with special running shoes. He said, “The Solomon XA Pro Trail Runners are one of the most highly reviewed Trail Runners available. They are light and waterproof with a very sticky tread, and retail for $160. Stan also likes the Coolibar Rash Guard UPF 50 workout shirt. “It is feather-light and cool for sports, life and activity. The ultra-soft polyester knit construction blocks 98 percent of UVA/UVB and provides breathability and effortless stretch. It’s a good deal at $50. Finally, Environeers recommends the Camelbak H.A.W.G. Lowrider 100-ounce racing pack. It has maximum storage, maximum hydration, and better balance. It features an ingenious lumbar design that shifts weight to your hips for more stability when you’re riding with a fully-loaded pack. It costs $160. For the novice fitness buff or the seasoned veteran, a membership at F45 Training in Sarasota may be a great fit. According to staff trainer Catrina Liott, they are offering a free membership and a full month of unlimited training worth $200. (It starts on the first day attended.) This program originated in Australia and blends cardio with strength training for maximum conditioning. Other gift ideas include the F45 Athletic Swag Bag. For around $75, it includes a stylish hat, gym bag, water bottle, and towel. Or the third option is the F45 athletic T-shirt ($25 value). These cotton shirts come in a variety of styles (shortsleeved or sleeveless) and colors. They scream FITNESS. And look great with a sprig of mistletoe! If yoga is your salvation, then Yolanda Nash at HotYoga4You (HY4Y) in Sarasota has some of the best deals in town, including yoga training and accessories (towels, clothing, gift cards). They are offering a beginner package for Florida residents who are new clients for $55. This includes two weeks of unlimited Yoga, HY4Y water bottle and a three-

pack of electrolytes. It’s a great opportunity to try out a variety of classes. For the more advanced yoga practitioner, HY4Y also offers the Hot Power Package for $230. It includes 20 classes to be used within three months, and one box (15-pack) of Ultima electrolytes. They also offer a Wellness Warrior Package for $650, which offers six months of unlimited yoga, a UFIT yoga towel, and a box of Ultima Electrolytes. Yolanda assures us that in six months you will see a real transformation through cleansing, toning, reenergizing and reorganizing your body and mind. To see some really cool stuff, head on over to Endurance House in Bradenton. Among their inventory of health-oriented gift ideas is the Roll Recovery R8 Deep Tissue Massage Roller for $119. Jerry Johnson at Endurance House says this patented technology self-adjusts for different body sizes and targets the IT-bands, quads, hamstrings, calves, shins, gluteus, arms and more. It is easy to use, feels great on tired legs, and is small enough to take anywhere. It helps improve circulation, breaks up muscle adhesions and reduces inflammation. Another of Johnson’s favorites is the Garmin Forerunner 935, a premium GPS running watch for $499. It monitors heart rate during performance, training and recovery, and looks damn good all the time! And finally, for that very special someone, when money is no object, please consider the Wahoo Kickr indoor trainer (for the time-crunched cyclist/triathlete). It sells for $1,199. Johnson says that Wahoo's Kickr power trainer offers a very smooth and realistic road feel, is simple to use and is compatible with an increasing number of apps that give you access to a huge virtual training world. The direct-drive smart trainer had a built-in power meter, Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity, and electromagnetic resistance that could be controlled by an external app or device. So, elves, angels and Santas everywhere, there you have it—ideas to show your generosity, love and support, while making your loved ones more fit, confident and whole. Shop on! Happy Holidays!

Build the Ultimate Body

m y G

! e e r F by John Schaser

ife can get in the way causing many well-intentioned exercisers to miss a trip to the gym. Stress, guilt, and anger can come in waves leaving many feeling horrible about missing a workout. But what if the gym is anywhere and the fitness equipment is your body? Bodyweight training is an effective way to build an impressive physique with the added advantage of saving money. The thought of bodyweight training may give you the reader flashbacks of an elementary school gym teacher preaching about the health benefits of push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups. But they were actually on to something! Bodyweight training is a fast and effective way to build strength, muscle, and control over the body. Below are the three top benefits of why you should begin bodyweight training.

L

Benefit #1

Bodyweight training builds strength. You don’t just need to bench a bar to gain the power! Levers, pistol squats, and iron crosses are all great feats of total body fitness that only require the body as the weight. Try this simple 22 FALL 2017

FIT941.COM

exercise to test your true strength. In a push-up position, lower your body down until your chest is a half inch from touching the ground. Now hold that position as long as possible without breaking form. If that wasn’t challenging enough try the same procedure, but this time, stagger your hand and foot position. Place your left hand and right leg forward, while your right hand and left leg stay back in the starting position. Soon you’ll realize holding a simple position like this requires a lot of strength. No weight has been added, it’s just the body.

Benefit #2

Bodyweight training is a low cost fitness option! Of course, there are many benefits to gym membership, supplements, group classes and health technology. But, these all cost money that not everyone has in large amounts. Whether you are rich, poor, or middle class, you can rock out a

killer workout solely using your bodyweight and you can do it anyplace and anywhere.

Benefit #3

Bodyweight training will build muscle. Many assume it is not taxing enough and therefore it will not cause an anabolic effect where torn tissue heals and the body builds muscle. This information is not true. For example, some of the best athletic physiques come from gymnasts. They are strong, fit, and very muscular. Want softball sized biceps? Start training like a gymnast and you will be amazed by the results. At the end of the day, the key point to remember is that bodyweight training is a great way to get into great shape. With proper programming, you can get the ultimate body solely by bodyweight training.
