What Are The Five Senses

All vertebrates possess five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch through which they can experience and make sense of world. Without our senses, we wouldn't have any idea what was going on around us and the human body would be functionally useless. Each of the senses therefore provides important functions and serves an intended purpose. The sense of smell is a chemical sense. It is called chemical sense as it detects the chemicals in the environment and it works on larger distances. The sense of smell is a primal sense for humans as well as animals. From an evolutionary standpoint, it is one of the most ancient of senses. Smell (or Olfaction) allows vertebrates and other organisms with olfactory receptors to identify food, mates, predators, and provides both sensual pleasure (the odor of flowers and perfume) as well as warnings of danger (e.g., spoiled food, chemical dangers). For both humans and animals, it is one of the important means by which our environment communicates with us (John & Leffingwell, 1994)

Smells are the perception of chemicals in the air or in our food. The...show more content...

An odorant acts on more than one receptor, but does so to varying degrees. Similarly, a single receptor interacts with more than one different odorant, though also to varying degrees. Therefore, each odorant has its own pattern of activity, which is set up in the sensory neurons. This pattern of activity is then sent to the olfactory bulb, where other neurons are activated to form a spatial map of the odor. Neural activity created by this stimulation passes to the primary olfactory cortex at the back of the underside, or orbital, part of the frontal lobe. Olfactory information then passes to adjacent parts of the orbital cortex, where the combination of odor and taste information helps create the perception of flavor. (Brain facts

The Five Senses

The faculties of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Those five things are what completes the 5 senses. They all send messages to our brain, which interprets the messages and interprets what is around us. "We had body language before we had speech, and apparently, 80% of what you understand in a conversation is read through body language, not the words. Sight makes up 83% of impact on brain from the information gained during a visual presentation. Tastemakes up 1%, hearing makes up 11%, smell 3% and touch 2%." (Gupta, 2013) Our experiences, beliefs, and culture affect what we notice out of the thousands of stimuli our senses are receiving. Our brain uses information it gathers through our five senses, interprets it and perceives the world around us, creating our life experience. Without our 5 senses we would be unaware of the world around us we would not be an able see, smell, taste, feel, or hear anything. In other words we would not be alive.Sight, which is arguably the most important of the 5 senses. It is what we see, it's more complicated than you would think. We do not see objects. We see light waves reflected off objects around us. When the lightwaves reach the retina in the back of our eyes, cells called rods and cones convert the waves into neural impulses, which then makes its way to the brain. In order for us to see, our brains interprets the messages coming from the rods and cones. Our perception depends on associations between the viewed image, and our stored memories. We perceive up to 80% of all impressions by our sight. If any of our other senses stop working, it's the eyes that would protect us from any danger that might occur. The nextsense is taste, this is when we eat, the substances dissolve by our saliva, which stimulate our sense of taste. Our taste buds are responsible for recognizing the four sensations of taste, which are sour, salty, bitter, savory and sweet. The bumps on the sides and tip of the tongue contain multiple taste buds, these are called papillae we have a total of 10,000 overall. The information from these papillae is sent by nerves to the thalamus and eventually to the cortex, where we recognize the taste as sweet, bitter, salty or sour and Get

Pre-Assessments: The Five Senses

Pre–assessments are I important when it when it comes to teaching a lesson because it allows us to see what students already know from the lesson that is going to be taught. Pre–assessments also give students a preview of what they will learn from the lesson. Before I begin my lesson I will inform my students that we are going to start a new unit on literature in which it has to deal with the five senses. This is how my script will go: Hello class today we will begin to learn about the five sense. To first start off I would like to know what you guys know about the five senses. The first question would be: How many of you know what the five senses are? The second question would be: What sense do we use our eyes for? The third question would Get

One of your five senses is sight. Your eyes are very important in your life, they work to help you see. Your eye is in your skull, in something called an eye socket. The sclera is the white part of the eye. Your eyes have many little red threads, if you rub your eyes, it may break some of the threads then your eye may turn a pink–ish color. The cornea a clear part of your eye, it helps to focus light. Your iris is the colored part of the eye. Next is the pupil, it is the big black dot in the middle of your eye. Lastly, in between the cornea and the iris is the the anterior chamber. That is the eye and it's

Five Senses Research Paper

Sense perception can be defined as how we see and interpret the world through our five senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. They are an important source of knowledge since they enable us most of the times to be conscious of the outside world. Perception consists of both sensation and interpretation. Sensation is the stimulation of a sensory receptor which produces neural impulses which the brain then interprets as visual image, sound, taste, pain, etc. Interpretation is how the information is then seen and processed in our brain. There are both strengths and weaknesses of sense perception as a way of knowing which I will talk about in my essay.

One strength of sense perception is the fact that it is our way of recording knowledge and becoming conscious of our surroundings. For example when you put your hand under boiling water your sensory receptor sends neural signals to the brain telling it that it is hot and you then automatically know you need to remove your hand. This kind of experiences your body and brain goes through then allows you to gain knowledge. It allows us to recognise and identify certain things in the future that our brain then automatically associates to past experiences.

This brings us to talk about one of sense perceptionВґs weaknesses. Our sense perception is...show more content... Sense perception is a complex and dynamic process, which cannot be seen immaculately. In my opinion even though sense perception has several weaknesses, without it we would never gotten the knowledge we have today. Just our five senses alone help us on a daily basis with basic human skills, which would be unimaginable to do without them. Our ability to be conscious of things, the state of being aware, consciousness, understanding all derive from our ability to perceive and even though there are limitations its already good enough, in my personal view, to have all these

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Sense Perception

The picture of reality that is around us is always constructed in our minds. Since we don't have access to other people's minds we fail to see their reality. The only way we can understand what is real in their world is to use our imagination. Our imagination serves us like a pair of shoes that lets us step into their world. The more we walk in their shoes, the more we know their world, and what is really in it. However, people tend to restrict reality and define it only using their five senses. Yet, this argument fails when it comes to explaining feelings that other people have experienced. This can be seen in the book, Swamplandia, when one tries to analyze the reality of Ossie's world and the people in it. It's clear to see that Louis Thanksgiving is a character in Ossie's world that is real, because of her true feelings for him, her knowledge of even the most miniscule details of his life, and overall by using our logical reasoning's .

Human beings are capable of experiencing various kinds of emotions, such as sadness, happiness, anger, love and many more. These emotions are real and so are the things that triggered us to feel them in the first place. In Swamplandia, we knew that Ossie felt love for Louis Thanksgiving on the first day she said his name. She told her sister that Louis Thanksgiving was the ghost that she has fallen in love with (Russell, 111). This love that she has for him is true and unique, because, he was the only ghost that she has mentioned by Get

Perception : The Soul And The Five Senses Essay

Perception: the Soul and the Five Senses

"The soul is the cause or source of the living body... it is the source of movement, it is the end, it is the essence of the whole living body (De Anima, 27)." As demonstrated in this quote from De Anima by Aristotle, the soul is essential to living things. And it is the soul that makes a body live, perceive and think and is therefore the actuality of the body (De Anima, 24). Aristotle's De Anima illustrates what the soul is, how it affects perception and what the five senses are. Substances or material bodies are made up of two parts, which Aristotle refers to as matter and form. Matter and form do not make up the substance in a literal sense but rather the matter represents the physical part and form the non–physical attributes of a substance (Barnes, 78). The soul is the form of a body, not the matter. The substance of the soul is ultimately the actuality of a body which puts it into existence (De Anima, 21).

"Perception is the capacity of the soul which distinguishes animals from plants; indeed, having a perceptive faculty is definitive of being an animal... every animal has at least touch, whereas most have the other sensory modalities as well... if an animal is to grow to maturity and propagate, it must be able to take in nourishment and to navigate its way through the world. Perception serves these ends (Shields)." Living things can possess all or only some of Get more content

'We see and understand things not as they are but as we are' Christopher Columbus, in the 1440's on his voyage to America, saw three mermaids and described them as insight of females who rose from the sea. Did Christopher Columbus Imagine the mermaids because he was interested in fantasies or did he actual see it? On one hand I do believe that we understand and see things not as they are but as we are, on the other hand disagree with this statement. The way we view things reflects on our personality and each of our personality is different and some people also have similar personality. "We do not see things the way they are but as we are" is said to be a Jewish proverb. The proverb talks about how we are engaged with sense perception. It...show more content...

Emotions are of different types sad, happy, angry, cheerful and many more. Sometimes people have mixed emotions as well. We know emotions because we feel them and it tells us about what's going on in our mind. Our state of mind also depends on the way we view things. Each person has different ways of seeing things. Even though each person views things differently but one state of mind can make the person see things the same. When a person is sad then everything around him would be sad and would react in a manner, which would make everyone, upset. When a person is happy then the people around him would be happy. The way people view thing depends on emotion. If a person is sad then everyone about him could be sad. When many people are sad they could react the same way. In some ways abstract ideas could be viewed the same for everyone and each idea could make the person view things differently.

Culture can play a very important role in the way we view things. Each culture has its own values and every culture is different from one another; they infer things as they are but on how it seems. In Indian culture no woman is allowed to work or to be exposed to the world around her but in America every woman has the freedom of rights. If Indians would see the American women then they would be ashamed of how America is, they understand and see things as they are and as their culture is. Culture also makes

Sense Perception Essay

Out of the five sense, the one sense that I would want to lose, if I have to lose a sense is smell. Personally, I feel that smell is the sense that is used the most, but really is not that significant compared to hearing, seeing, tasting, and touching. Smell is the sensation of smelling that pizza sauce and the variety of soups, to the bad smells of animals and farts. Smell is a sense, which is primarily needed when you want to find something or to get the mouth watery for the food. Each sense is important to every individual, however smell can be something that can be lost. For instance, when we have a cold we can usually not smell anything we are eating, or anything. When people say did you smell that, we have the excuse of saying we are

What Are The Five Traditional Senses

Internet Activity #6 The five traditional senses have been around since the time of Aristotle. Each sensory organ is made up of cells that have receptors for stimuli. In this way, the cells are linked to the nervous system and the brain. The senses are very primitive functions of the cells. Humans' most developed sense is sight. The eye is the sensory organ for sight. Visual input from the eyes is mapped by the back of thebrain, and it is combined into one image, combining the image from both eyes into one. The brain flips images to look right side up because the focusing action of the lense causes images to appear upside down to the retina. Light is focused on the retina through a transparent lens. I think that hunger is a sensation, and there is a level ofperception and awareness attached to it. I, personally, believe that the senses are only related to the 5 senses. Many kids also experience a level of negative reinforcement when learning to read, as well. Kids learn that they are rewarded when they do well with their reading, and later on in their studies it becomes more of an automatic response. People become conditioned to expect positive or negative reinforcement for behavior. A good example as an adult, would be a person would expect positive reinforcement for a job well done (getting a raise, etc), and additional forms of punishment for doing poorly. I believe why we continue to follow the norms ofoperant conditioning is that we are familiar with the concept from childhood, and so it continues

The following paper is an explanation of our five senses. How they work and why do we have them. Would a person be able to function if one or more senses were lost? All these questions are answered in following document. Our entire sensory system consists of numerous amounts of different sensors. The main senses are vision, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Those senses are important. They play a role in our everyday life. Losing one of these senses could be crucial. Let us start with vision....show more content...

The optic nerve splits behind the eye, where the right side of both retinas goes to the right side of the brain and the left side of retinas goes to the left side of the brain. This turns the image right side up. | Smell is another one of our five senses. We can detect a variety of more than 10,000 smells. With oursense of smell, we are able to detect different emotions as well. We release a certain chemical called pheromones. Once airborne, we cannot smell pheromones, yet our brain will detect them as a hidden form of communication. This explains attraction between people. We receive smell by molecules entering the nasal passage where they meet with the receptor neurons of the nose. Each receptor neuron detects a certain type of smell, then travel to the brain. Our brain then combines all different odors into one particular smell. Next, the sense of taste detects 4 main tastes; sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. The brain combines the four tastes then processes into one taste recognizable taste. About

once every 10 days, our taste buds are replaced. "Because if our taste buds weren't constantly reproducing, we'd lose the ability to taste after we'd accidentally burned our tongues." (Feldman, "Understanding Psychology", 2008, p.110). The following describes our skin. This has four

Explain The Five Human Senses

The human senses have long been ignored in marketing, despite our awareness of their great significance. The five human senses are of crucial importance for an individual's experience of different purchase and consumption processes. It is through the senses that every individual becomes conscious of and perceives firms, products, and brands. Because of this, further knowledge about the human senses might make a firm's marketing more successful and an individual's sensory experience more personalized. Growing interest in sensory marketing among practitioners, consultants, and researchers means that all five human senses are today receiving increased attention. (B. H. Schmitt, 1999 ; B. H. Schmitt, 2003 ; M. GobГ©, 2001; M. Lindstrom, 2005 ). More often than not, the interest is in making customers aware of a product or a brand in order to reach tactical, short–term sales targets. In contrast to this, sensory marketing, is to be...show more content...

It is in the human brain, in both the left and right hemispheres, that the mental flows, processes, and psychological reactions take place that result in an individual's sensory experience. A sensory marketing framework is based on the assumption that a firm should reach the five human senses at a deeper level than is reached by mass and relationship marketing. Because of this, sensory marketing is concerned with a firm's treatment of the customer, that is, with how it meets the individual in a personal, mutual way through dialogue, interactivity, multidimensional communication, and digital technology. This is different from customer acquisition in mass marketing or customer retention in relationship marketing. The treatment of the customer should be based on logic and rationality as well as emotions and values to create brand awareness and establish a sustainable image of a brand. What will it mean to sense something? Sensory receptors are focused neurons that answer to specific forms of stimuli. When sensory information is identified by a sensory receptor, sensation has occurred. For instance, light that comes in the eye causes chemical variations in cells that are present at the back of the eye. These cells transmit messages, in the form of action potentials, to the central nervous system. The transformation from sensory stimulus energy to action potential is called as transduction. You have possibly known since elementary school that we have five senses: smell (olfaction), hearing (audition), vision ,taste (gustation), and touch (somatosensation). It turns out that this concept of five senses is overgeneralized. We also have asensory system that gives information about balance (the vestibular sense), body situation and movement (proprioception and kinesthesia), pain (nociception), and temperature (thermoception)....show more content... Absolute threshold denotes to the least amount of stimulus energy that must be existing for the stimulus to be sensed 50% of the time. Another way to consider about this is by questioning how faint can a light be or how soft can a sound be and still be sensed half of the time. The sensitivity of our sensory receptors can be pretty astonishing. It has been predicted that on a clear night, the most sensitive sensory cells in the back of the eye can sense a candle flame 30 miles away Under noiseless situations, the hair cells (the receptor cells of the inner ear) can sense the tick of a clock 20 feet away .It is also conceivable for us to get messages that are existing below the threshold for conscious awareness–these are named as subliminal Get more

ANTICIPATORY SET:

The Teacher will enter the classroom and exaggerate the use of her senses by going through each one and asking the students questions. For

example, the teacher may ask the students to describe the room, like what is smells like, what it looks like, what the desks feel like, and then she asks them to close their eyes and tell her what they hear.

BODY OFLESSON:

Procedure:

1. Introduction: The teacher will start the lesson by asking the students if they have ever heard of the five senses. If they say yes, ask what they know about them. If they say no, then say, " Well today we are going to find out what the five senses are!"

2. Body: The lesson will start off by having the children do an activity. The children will be divided into groups of two. After the children are divided, the teacher will explain that the first sense is called touch. The teacher will explain the mystery box activity. The teacher will then pass out one mystery box for each group. The children will then be told to put their hands into the box and try to observe and guess what the item could be. To check to see if they are right, the children can look on the bottom of the mystery box. The name of the item

The Five Human Senses: The Sense Of Perceptions

The sense of Perception is the knowledge obtained throughout the frequent need of one of the five main human senses, such as taste, sight, hearing, smell or touch.

For example, if a tree falls in the middle of nowhere, and no one is around to hear it (including animals), that does not make it a sound (which basically is the wave movement of particles), because only animals and human beings can hear and perceive the movement of those particles through the hearing, as far as we know.

Only through this knowledge are our bodies capable of identifying a peripheral stimulation.

It acts as a Way of Knowing (WOK), as it is used to obtain useful, as well as essential information for ourselves.

Humans often make predictions, through the building of their...show more content...

They differentiate from each other, as the conscious proprioception is communicated from the spinal nerve (located in the Central Nervous System) to the brain; and finally, as the unconscious proprioception is communicated within the brain, and, therefore, make involuntary (or automatic) movements.

The main benefit of proprioception is the fact that it is directly related to inner–balance, and reflexes (involuntary responses of the body), which reveal a healthy body and mind, and, therefore, are advantageous and fundamental to humans.

The human body and its senses tend to fail quite frequently, and, therefore, many weaknesses are evident. Our senses are easily tricked, manipulated, influenced by the environment and context, as well as very limited.

Optical illusions occur almost every day, due to visually perceived images, distorted by our fragile sight. The eye processes an image that is then sent to the brain, but the image ends up not being accurate, and tricks both the eye and brain. There are three types of optical illusions: literal, physiological and cognitive. The literal optical illusion is the most common during our daily Get

Sensation and perception are commonly misconceived as synonyms for one another. However, these are actually two different processes. Although, these two processes often work together in our daily lives. According to Myers' (2014), "In our everyday experiences, sensation and perception blend into one continuous process" (p. 152). Sensation is the process in which our sensory receptors obtain information from stimulus in our environment. Perception is where our brain processes and organizes this information creating the ability to recognize certain stimuli. Our perception is dependent upon our sensation. To perceive something, we first have tosense it. Therefore, perception cannot happen without sensation. On the contrary, sensation can occur without perception. When we sense something, we do not necessarily have to perceive it. If a sensation doesn't trigger a memory or something of importance to us, it is likely that we will not perceive it. The beginning to the road of sensation is the five senses. The five senses are vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Our vision is the way we create mental pictures of the world and the space around us. Our eyes are the main sensory organ involved in the visionary process. Each part of the eye has a different job in order to put things together. The cornea is a transparent layer that controls light waves that enter the eye. The pupil is a small cavity in our eye where light is able to pass through. When light passes through the
