What Are The Five Senses

All vertebrates possess five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch through which they can experience and make sense of world. Without our senses, we wouldn't have any idea what was going on around us and the human body would be functionally useless. Each of the senses therefore provides important functions and serves an intended purpose. The sense of smell is a chemical sense. It is called chemical sense as it detects the chemicals in the environment and it works on larger distances. The sense of smell is a primal sense for humans as well as animals. From an evolutionary standpoint, it is one of the most ancient of senses. Smell (or Olfaction) allows vertebrates and other organisms with olfactory receptors to identify food, mates, predators, and provides both sensual pleasure (the odor of flowers and perfume) as well as warnings of danger (e.g., spoiled food, chemical dangers). For both humans and animals, it is one of the important means by which our environment communicates with us (John & Leffingwell, 1994)

The faculties of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Those five things are what completes the 5 senses. They all send messages to our brain, which interprets the messages and interprets what is around us. "We had body language before we had speech, and apparently, 80% of what you understand in a conversation is read through body language, not the words. Sight makes up 83% of impact on brain from the information gained during a visual presentation. Tastemakes up 1%, hearing makes up 11%, smell 3% and touch 2%." Without our 5 senses we would be unaware of the world around us we would not be an able see, smell, taste, feel, or hear anything. We see light waves reflected off objects around us. When the lightwaves reach the retina in the back of our eyes, cells called rods and cones convert the waves into neural impulses, which then makes its way to the brain. Sense perception can be defined as how we see and interpret the world through our five senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. They are an important source of knowledge since they enable us most of the times to be conscious of the outside world. Perception consists of both sensation and interpretation. Sensation is the stimulation of a sensory receptor which produces neural impulses which the brain then interprets as visual image, sound, taste, pain, etc. Interpretation is how the information is then seen and processed in our brain. One strength of sense perception is the fact that it is our way of recording knowledge and becoming conscious of our surroundings. The picture of reality that is around us is always constructed in our minds. Since we don't have access to other people's minds we fail to see their reality. The only way we can understand what is real in their world is to use our imagination. Our imagination serves us like a pair of shoes that lets us step into their world. The more we walk in their shoes, the more we know their world, and what is really in it. However, people tend to restrict reality and define it only using their five senses. Yet, this argument fails when it comes to explaining feelings that other people have experienced. This can be seen in the book, Swamplandia, when one tries to analyze the reality of Ossie's world and the people in it. Perception: the Soul and the Five Senses

"The soul is the cause or source of the living body... it is the source of movement, it is the end, it is the essence of the whole living body (De Anima, 27)." As demonstrated in this quote from De Anima by Aristotle, the soul is essential to living things. And it is the soul that makes a body live, perceive and think and is therefore the actuality of the body (De Anima, 24). Aristotle's De Anima illustrates what the soul is, how it affects perception and what the five senses are. Substances or material bodies are made up of two parts, which Aristotle refers to as matter and form. Matter and form do not make up the substance in a literal sense but rather the matter represents the physical part and form the non–physical attributes of a substance (Barnes, 78). The soul is the form of a body, not the matter. The substance of the soul is ultimately the actuality of a body which puts it into existence (De Anima, 21).
