As you read the content in this publication, and learn more about our community retailers, restaurants and amenities, I invite you to explore all that Zionsville offers. Casalini Portraits approaches 50 years in business Tom Casalini realized more than 50 years ago that whatever career path he was going to pursue was going to be something he was passionate about. “When I started out, I asked myself, ‘What do I want to do?’” Casalini said. “I’m not really good with working with other people, especially not working for other people. I knew I liked doing photography, and I loved creating portraits. So, I told myself that if I’m going to do something for the rest of my life, I’m going to make sure it’s something I really love doing.” A native Hoosier, Casalini left Indiana for a brief time to pursue his passion and attended the New York Institute of Photography, where he graduated in 1972. The following year, he returned to his roots and opened his own photography studio, Casalini Portraits, in downtown Zionsville. The business will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Casalini
Originally at 170 S Main Street, directly above where Cobblestone Grill is now, Casalini moved his business to the other side of the village to 10.5 N. Main Street in 1976 and has remained there since. Although he now only does portraits, for more than 30 years Casalini did commercial work, specializing in lifestyle photography. He has shot commercial photography for Sheaffer Pens, Pinehurst Golf Resort and Chevrolet, to name a few clients. However, his passion has always been for portrait work. Although he used to shoot in color, he switched to black and white 30 years ago and vows to never go back. “I think black and white offers a totally different personality to the portraits. They become timeless,” Casalini said. “For example, sometimes colors can mean one thing to one person and mean something completely different to another, so black and white eliminates things like this from the equation and allows me to capture who the person is in the portrait.” As an important part of creating personal portraits, Casalini insists on getting to know the person he is photographing before taking any photos. “I’m very respectful of the craft of creating portraits,” Casalini said. “If someone comes in and wants a portrait done, we have to have a conversation about who they are, what moves them and what’s important to them personally. Through that conversation, I get a better idea of who they are, and it allows me to create a better portrait.” Casalini has done many projects through the years, including two books and a gallery series on famous Hoosiers. Notable figures include John Wooden, Shelly

Long, John Mellencamp, Jim Davis, Joyce DeWitt and Sydney Pollack. Casalini’s two books are “Ordinary Heroes,” a tribute to living Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, and “Queerness Doesn’t Matter: A Journey With My Friends of Dorothy,” which looks into the LGBTQ community without any conversation about sex and sexuality. “I’ve been having a blast. I’m coming up on my 50th anniversary, and, who knows, I might make it 60,” he said. Casalini doesn’t know how he’s going to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his business, but he expects he’ll spend the day doing the same thing he did for his 40th anniversary, giving back to the community. For that milestone, he helped raise funds for the Ascension St. Vincent House, a home for families of patients who live more than 60 miles from Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. “In my 40th year, I partnered with St. Vincent and did a fundraiser for the St. Vincent’s House,” Casalini said. “We were the first ones to raise money for the St. Vincent’s House and introduce it to the public, and we ended up raising $65,000 for it. So, that’s probably how I’ll celebrate my 50th, is doing something else to give back to the community.” Casalini Portraits offers free consultations, with rates starting at $275. Heigl said the company strongly supports other Zionsville businesses. “Zionsville is a phenomenal place to live and we obviously all agree on that because we are, or have, raised families here,” Heigl said. “We just want to share the good news about living in Zionsville. We’ve focused a lot on little businesses here with videos and things we push out because we want people to know how great it is to live here.”

When there was concern about small businesses after the COVID-19 lockdowns began in March 2020, Heigl’s company partnered with the Chamber of Commerce’s Night on the Bricks in the summer of 2020. She now sponsors the event, which features food and music on select Thursday nights. “That got people out in our stores and restaurants,” Heigl said. “We also sponsor parts of Christmas in the Village. There are several businesses that are part of that.” Heigl and her husband, John, have lived in Zionsville for 30 years. Her four children, Tim, 28, Lillie, 25; AnnCatherine, who goes by A.C., 23, and Mari, 20, all graduated from Zionsville Community High School. Before working in real estate, Heigl worked in medical sales but realized she needed a new career path when she found out her daughter, A.C., had Down syndrome. “We were not expecting a baby with Down syndrome, so I needed more flexibility and I needed not to have a pager that went off, causing me to tear out of the house to go to an operating room at the crack of dawn,” she said. “If something went wrong from a product standpoint, you had to get there very fast.” Having a child with Down syndrome, Heigl and her family value inclusion. Heigl’s older daughter, Lillie, is a lawyer with a focus in disability law. Heigl is also active with ZCHS fundraisers that focus on inclusion. A.C. played on the high school tennis team, was a cheerleader and was active in Best Buddies. She now attends George Mason University’s Mason LIFE program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who want to attend college. For more, visit heiglrealestate.com.

Evolution: From frame shop to art gallery
CV Art and Frame, 110 S. Main St., was originally a frame and print-focused business, but owner Barbara Jennings combined it with her passion for original art.
Barbara Jennings is one of the longest-tenured business owners in downtown Zionsville. “Other than Tom Casalini (of Casalini Portraits) as far as merchants in the village go, I can’t think of anyone who’s been here longer,” said Jennings, owner and executive director of CV Art and Frame. Jennings and her parents bought the property at 110 S. Main St. in 1986, when it was the Corner Vise Gallery and Frame Shop. Jennings
“We changed the name about five or six years ago,” Jennings said. “The reason I changed the name was to be more web friendly. I wanted to include the word ‘art’ in the name to attract more art seekers via web searches, but I also shortened ‘Corner Vise’ to ‘CV’ to be more domain friendly while still keeping a part of the history of the business intact.” Initially, the small business focused on framing and printing, but after two years of ownership, Jennings bought another building and expanded her business by about 3,000 square feet, which allowed Jennings to add an art gallery and pursue her life-long passion. “I had always loved art and was interested in it,” she said. “However, my mom discouraged me from going to school for it, but when my parents approached me about buying and running this framing business, I saw an opportunity to involve more art in my career.”
Although the framing side of the business is still important, expanding gave Jennings more room to experiment with the art gallery. “The frame shop is still the bread and butter,” she said. “It brings in steady income. But when we moved here, it allowed me to start bringing in some nicer, bigger and more valuable art. That’s when we really started to focus on fine art, and that was a part of the name change as well. When we changed the name to CV Art and Frame, we decided we wanted to be more known for original art, so original art is our main focus now, along with fine custom framing.” Since expanding the art gallery, CV Art and Frame has featured the work of several renowned artists, including Thomas Kinkade, Edna Hibel, G. Harvey, Terry Redlin, P. Buckley Moss, Ting Shao Kuang, Adrian Wong Shue, Mary Bertrand, Charles Frace and Lena Liu. CV Art and Frame also conducts events showcasing the works of local artists. The latest is a new event, which will display the work of multiple artists in the gallery. Jennings referred to the event as resembling “a market.” The April 2 Hoosier Artists Spring Show showcased the work of eight local artists.The event included live music, wine and special presentations. “We are here to provide the community with anything and everything as it relates to art and custom framing,” Jennings said. “They can always reach out to us with their art needs. DK Pierce recognized, again, for excellence Denise Pierce launched DK Pierce & Associates in 2000 because of her unique experience working in the biopharmaceutical industry and with global consulting firms for the previous 19 years.
