$750K grant to kickstart HSE child care program By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A $750,000 state grant will help Hamilton Southeastern Schools develop an employee-sponsored on-site child EDUCATION care program for district employees, providing day care for children up to preschool age. The grant was awarded through the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. HSE Chief Finance Officer Dowling Katy Dowling gave a presentation about the grant during the Jan. 10 HSE Board of Trustees meeting. She said that once the program is up and running — hopefully by the start of the 2024-25 school year — the plan is that it would pay for itself through user fees. “You’re literally investing, and it’s not going to cost the district directly,” she said. “And that, to me, is important given, you

know, what I do here. Prior (to this grant), if we were going to implement this, we would have had to have come up with the upfront cost at the expense of other programs we offer and we don’t have to do that with the grant money. We’re able to do it through the grant, which means we didn’t say no to something else.” There are some potential costs to the district involving renovating spaces to accommodate a day care center, she said. Those expenses would have to come from bond funds. The grant will cover equipment and furnishing, operational expenses and

some overhead costs. Dowling said providing child care on-site will help the district recruit and retain employees and will increase overall child care capacity throughout the community. During public comment, Hamilton Southeastern Education Association President Abby Taylor said HSEA members are thankful the district is moving forward with a child care program. “I can’t tell you how many times this was a pie-in-the-sky-type of thing that all teachers and employees have asked about year after year,” she said. “Because if you know anything about how early the high school (staff) have to come in, it starts … earlier than most child care is open.” The first steps toward creating the program will include appointing an implementation team and hiring a consultant, surveying district employees about their child care needs and evaluating school facilities to see which ones have suitable space for a day care center. Dowling said the program will start small and expand as resources allow.

Kitchen fire temporarily closes Pinheads By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A Jan. 10 kitchen fire at Pinheads & Alley’s Alehouse, 13825 PUBLIC SAFETY Britton Park Rd. in Fishers, has led to the temporary closure of the bowling and entertainment venue, according to a social media post from the company. One employee suffered a minor injury, according to the Fishers Fire Department. They were treated on site by city ambulance crews. The Pinheads’ social media post states that the business will remain closed for at least three weeks for repairs and to replace equipment. “We deeply appreciate the understanding and support of our valued team members, guests and the community during this challenging time,” Pinheads COO Ryne Barr stated. “Our primary focus is on the safety of everyone involved and we are taking all necessary steps to assess and address the situation promptly.” In an earlier announcement released Jan. 11, the business stated that the fire suppression system worked “flawlessly” in response to the late-evening fire, allowing everyone inside to get out safely. “As always, Fishers Fire Department and supporting first responders did a great job,” the company stated. “We are fortunate to have such an asset to this great community.” Fishers Fire Department confirmed that the grease fire was extinguished by the fire suppression system. Responding firefighters helped with ventilation to clear out the smoke. The company stated that those with reservations at the venue will be contacted by sales team members.

Fishers senior basketball player improves with age By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Fishers High School basketball coach Garrett Winegar is convinced the best is yet to come for senior Keenan Garner. “He is just scratching the surface,” Winegar said. Garner, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, doesn’t turn 18 until April. “Also, with living on a U.S. Army base in Germany for seven years prior to returning to the States last year, Keenan has not played as much basketball as many of the kids in the States have,” Winegar said. “On top of all that, he works his butt off, is a terrific kid and leader and is going to do what it takes to continue to grow.” Garner, who moved to Fishers in September 2022, was averaging more than 16 points and eight rebounds as of Jan. 18. The Tigers were 14-0 at the time. “Keenan has improved the most with his ball handling, passing and finishing and his overall game IQ and feel for the game,” Winegar said. “He has really developed into a true wing/guard who has the ability to also play in the post. Keenan has worked

Haralson averaged 23.4 points as a sophomore last season. “It took a lot of people buying in the

offseason and really just believing we can win any game we go into,” Garner said. “We have really good team chemistry. We do things on and off the court. Once you have that relationship off the court, it translates to on the court. We’re unselfish and we trust each other in the big moments.”

Garner said his biggest leap from last season has been as a leader. “I’m teaching everybody everything I can to have a really good senior season,” Garner said. “I’m focusing on all parts of my game, not just scoring but rebounding and assisting. I’m trying to be a more versatile player. I’m trying to do a lot of everything, not just one thing.” Garner, who was averaging 63 percent shooting from the field, averaged 7.9 points on 55 percent shooting last season. “We have a lot of good shooters,” he said. “I feel like everyone on our team can step up and hit a shot, and that opens up driving lanes.” In Germany, Garner said his high school played against other schools from military bases. Garner began playing basketball when he was about 11 years old. He was trained and coached by Mario Coursey for approximately five years. “He helped me fall in love with the game and it grew from there,” he said. Garner has NCAA Division I offers from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois, in addition to some NAIA offers.

Retiree and former journalist keeps busy with local blog, podcast

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Larry Lannan had an early start in broadcast news through his high school speech team, which included a radio and TV element. That was in the late 1960s, and the experience steered Lannan toward broadcast trade school and a career in radio journalism before he switched careers in the mid-1980s. After he retired in 2011, the longtime Fishers resident decided to return to his roots and in 2012 started showing up at local government meetings and writing about what happened for his blog, called — appropriately — “Larry in Fishers.” “I’m not a real great tech guy, but I have a good friend of mine who is a journalist and writes nationally about technical stuff, the tech business, and he gave me some pointers,” Lannan said. “And I read a book, ‘Blogging for Dummies,’ which was written for me.” Lannan, now 72, said his original plan was to sit quietly in the back of the room during meetings, take notes, go back home and write short blog posts about what happened. He figured a handful of government geeks like himself would be the only ones interested. “I was wrong,” he said. “People really wanted this information” and at the time, nobody else was reporting on the day-today activities of the then-town government. Lannan said he knew something was up when, after a few months of blogging, Councilmember John Weingardt approached him and asked, “Are you Larry?” He hadn’t put a counter on the blog at that point, so Lannan didn’t know how many people were reading it, but that conversation showed at least some folks were noticing. And it’s grown ever since. “When I started this in 2012, I figured if I could get 100 people to read this, I’d be a terrific success,” he said. “I just got my numbers in for 2023. The number of unique visitors I have had on my blog is just below 96,000.” Lannan’s first radio job was in Franklin at a small commercial station that is no longer locally operated. He said he worked there for a couple of years before deciding

it wasn’t a good idea to bypass college. He returned to his hometown of Indianapolis to take classes at IUPUI. He didn’t finish his degree, he said, but did get another radio job in Martinsville and later ended up in Greenfield, where he hosted an all-night radio talk show from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. “They wanted that talk show because they were scared to death somebody was going to compete for their license,” he said. “Back in those days — the way it worked has kind of changed now, over the years — (but) when a license renewal was up, anybody could apply for the license, even if you held the license.” If someone did try to acquire the license, Lannan said, the fact that the station broadcasted a live public-affairs show several hours a night, five nights a week, made a stronger case for keeping the license. “I’d do fun stuff, like have psychics on, UFOs — the stuff that people like late at night,” he said. “But I did serious shows about the Middle East, about local government, law enforcement. I just dealt with any issue that was topical at the time.” And he interviewed a lot of authors, he said, but most nights people simply called in and talked about whatever was on their minds. “We had a very complicated system for a seven-second delay, in case somebody said something that they weren’t supposed to say on the radio,” Lannan said. “That was always fun. And if that system broke down, I couldn’t take (calls that night). I just had to find some other way to keep the show going.” Lannan said that experience helped him with his podcast, which he started in 2016. He said he wanted to provide a space for local personalities and officials to talk to many people in the community for an extended time. Radio — and by extension, podcasts — is a more personal way to communicate with people, he said. “You’re speaking to each of those (listeners) 1-on-1,” he said. “It’s a very special kind of communication — very different than TV, print and all the others. Because I had the radio background, I did decide the podcast would be a really good avenue to talk to local people and get a long-form discussion.”

And people listened. Lannan said it got so popular that when he announced that he was taking a break right before school board elections — because his first grandchild was due — some local high school students stepped up to record interviews with all the candidates so he could put them out for listeners. “I found out that it was so important to the community that they had podcasts

available to them for candidates,” he said. “That was a chance for (candidates) to sit down and spend up to 30 minutes to talk about their candidacy, what their views were about being a candidate and their views on the school board. People have gotten used to that so much that somebody stepped forward and said that they will do it for me, and they did it and that is still amazing to me.” Larry in Fishers is a free blog with no paywalls and few, if any, ads. Lannan said he essentially volunteers his time to keep it up and, at this point, has no plans to stop. Lannan did try to quit twice, he said, laughing. The first time, he was talked into continuing by Mayor Scott Fadness. The second time was right before the COVID-19 pandemic. But then Lannan caught the virus and said he couldn’t do anything for a while except sit and reflect. When he recovered, he decided he needed to keep his mind busy, and continue making a contribution to his community. Lannan’s blog can be found at larryinfishers.com. LARRY IN FISHERS’ FIRST BIG STORY Larry Lannan said the first big story he covered through his blog, Larry in Fishers, was in 2012 when Fishers voters were set to decide whether to remain a town, become a reorganized city or become a second-class city. “It was not a straightforward referendum,” he said. “It was a complicated referendum, but people figured it out and wanted to be a (second-class) city.” That was fall of 2012, and the first election for the city mayor and council was 2014. But people didn’t realize that was the case right away. “They thought it would be 2015,” Lannan said. “That was the next cycle to have a city election in Indiana. But the Legisla-

ture, somebody sneaked a provision into the law — it took a little while for people to figure out it was there — that Fishers would have a special election in 2014 for our city officials for one-year terms and then have the regular four-year term election the next year. So, all of a sudden we had this first city election.” Lannan said the Republican primary determined who won the mayoral race, since no Democrats ran, and in the field of six candidates, only two had a chance: then-town manager Scott Fadness and former town council president Walt Kelly. Long story short: Fadness won by a small margin and has remained mayor ever since.

“How do bi-focal contact lenses work?” That is the million-dollar question we get asked multiple times daily. In one word, the answer is: magic! It’s actually some pretty complicated physics, but “magic” is a bit easier to comprehend unless you work for NASA or love nerdy optometric ray light diagrams, but I digress. For the sake of simplicity, the multifocal contact lenses are designed like a bulls-eye target, with alternating zones of distance and near prescriptions. Each zone helps the patient to see clearly at different distances. Simple enough, right? We’re often asked, “But how can I ‘see’ far and up close at the same time?” Well, you can and you can’t. Multifocal contacts work on the principle of simultaneous vision. Imagine placing a screen door in between you and another person. You can choose to focus on the screen door or the person standing on the other side. You can actually see both at the same time, but you can only focus clearly on one at a time. The same holds true with the bifocal/ multifocal contact lenses. Your brain is getting simultaneous images from each different zone but needs to choose which one it wants to see clearly at that moment in time. Again, this sounds a lot more difficult and complicated than in actual practice, which is why “magic” covers a lot of the explanation sans physics. The reality is that most patients adapt very quickly and easily to the above mentioned complex system. Typically, it will take 48 to 72 hours for a patient to adjust to their new simultaneous vision contact lenses. And once they adapt, they will be able to enjoy clear vision at near, far and computer distances without needing reading glasses or having to suffer from the pitfalls of monovision.

In 2016, Noblesville resident Aaron Reed found a side hustle that would later become an entrepreneurial venture. BUSINESS It was Garage Force, a national franchise specializing in floor coating installation. Prior to 2016, Reed and his wife Patti collectively spent 30 years working in the corporate world. Aaron and Patti both worked at McDonald’s, and Patti later worked for Riverview Hospital. When Aaron discovered Garage Force of Indianapolis North, he started working for the company part time when he wasn’t working his first job. Aaron said after a couple of years, he wanted to start his own business. “I was getting tired of the corporate world,” Aaron said. “The opportunity came up to open up my own (Garage Force).” In 2018, Aaron opened Garage Force of Indianapolis South. In 2021, Garage Force of Indianapolis North was sold to Aaron because the owner wanted to pursue other career opportunities. When the Reeds owned both locations, they decided to merge them into

one, Garage Force of Indianapolis. It provides services for Indianapolis and nearby areas like Fishers and Noblesville. Patti said the business was so successful that she was able to leave her old job to join Aaron in operating the business in 2021. Today, it’s family business. The coating is highly durable and is often used to coat and seal garage floors and, according to the Reeds, lasts longer than traditional coating, making it ideal for regularly used surfaces like garage floors and places with concrete. Weighing the correct measure Commentary by Terry Anker “You’re a rich girl, and you’ve gone too far ‘cause you know it don’t matter anyway,” sang Daryl Hall from the 1977 No. ESSAY 1 hit. It tells the story of a young woman relying upon the wealth and incumbent power of her father to protect her from the consequences of her own actions. If not held to account, what keeps us from going, as the song retells, “too far?” At the other end, in the same year an epic war film, “A Bridge Too Far,” directed by Richard Attenborough, recounts the story of a failed Allied operation during World War II. Scores of men lose their lives because of the overreach and hubris of central command. We imagine much of what we do through the three-pronged lens of the fairy tale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” One thing is too much, one is too little and the final is “just right.” We push ourselves to ensure that we go far enough, but not too far, in all matters, personal and professional.

Trainers and coaches lead us to fatigue but not injury. Our technologies now lure us to engage but also encourage us to seek rest. But for most of life, we are left on our own to decide if we’ve gone too far or not quite far enough. Even for the “rich girl,” the risks are significant as there is a cost associated with both excess and deficiency. In interpersonal relationships, when do we pass the point of no return? If there is such a spot, what transgression, word or violation of trust cannot be recovered? And if we take no action, what will attract others to our side? Even if supported by “the old man’s money,” is it still on us to gauge our contributions in context to those around us?

Grateful for my empty nest Commentary by Danielle Wilson Oh, lord. I’ve just come from a quick trip to Louisville, where I was forcibly reminded about the challenges of parentHUMOR ing little kids. Yikes. I went to pseudo-celebrate my birthday and left with the gift of gratitude. Thank goodness those times are behind me! My nephews, who live around the corner from my mom, are 9, 7 and 3. They showed up for dinner in all their childlike glory, the oldest launching immediately into a pitch for a movie he and his younger brothers are producing called “Mario and Godzilla,” and the middle, coatless, yelling about organizing a fast-food restaurant game. The baby, who happens to have brighter red hair than mine, was content running around in his winter apparel, making Duo Block Happy Meals for everyone. Lots of noise, lots of movement, lots of energy. Not surprisingly, my sister poured herself a goblet of chardonnay. And actually, we were able to eat in rela-

tive peace, although the pot roast did not sit well with Mini Ginger. But as we were transitioning to dessert, all hell broke loose. From the porch room, youngest brother suddenly started crying hysterically, and middle brother began apologizing profusely. We all stared in horror at the 3-year-old as a perfectly shaped, bluish-purple goose egg emerged on his pasty white forehead. My sister downed her wine, picked up the screamer and calmly announced, “We’re leaving.” Although they missed cake and ice cream, they had unknowingly given me a wonderful gift. A moment to be grateful for having survived the rugrat stage of parenting and to reflect on the joys of an empty nest. Happy birthday to me, indeed. Peace out!

ATI actors get their kicks on ‘Route 66’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Craig Underwood had so much fun with Actors Theatre of Indiana’s presentation of “Route 66” in 2012, he was MUSICAL eager to travel down that road again. The 2000 Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate, who is based in New York City, returns to play the same character he did in 2012 in the musical about traveling the famous route in ATI’s production set for Feb. 2-18 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “I’m excited to do it again,” Underwood said. “I had such a great time last time. I’m a little nervous because I am 12 years older, but I think it’ll be really fun.” Underwood contacted ATI when he learned it was presenting the show again. “Because it’s four people that have to sing together, it’s very specific,” he said. “I totally understand if I’m not the right fit this time, but I’d jump at the chance to do it. I love working for ATI.” The four men play different roles in vignettes, but all go by their real first names in each vignette. The music follows the area of the U.S. and the time from the 1950s to the mid-1960s. “I love when it gets to the Beach Boystype music,” Underwood said. “I think it amps it up and all the fun harmonies, and by that time we as performers are pretty tired because we’re like an hour and 20 minutes into the one-and-a-half-hour show. I think it gets us going again. It’s like a whole breath of fresh air. It just shows kind of how the music shifted from the ‘50s to the ‘60s.” Cynthia Collins, an ATI co-founder and Carmel resident, is directing and choreographing the musical. “From start to finish, it’s this high-energy journey on Route 66,” Collins said. “The show goes from Chicago to Los Angeles, and the music follows the journey. It starts out with bebop music from the ’50s.” The musical concludes with songs such as “Dead Man’s Curve,” “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena” and “GTO.” There are audio commercials from the

era, and radio disc jockeys reflect the area of the nation. Eric Olson, a Fishers resident, wasn’t familiar with the show but saw a video of the previous time ATI performed “Route 66.” “It’s really fun to hear a mix of songs and you are like, ‘I’ve known that song my whole life,’” said Olson, who works for Indiana Repertory Theatre as institutional giving manager and is in his fourth production with ATI. “Songs like ‘King of the Road’ mixed in with songs you’ve never heard before, but (it’s) a great tune. It’s a lot of work in a little time. These shows have a way of being terrifying in the beginning, thinking, ‘There is no way I can ever do this,’ and then a few days in, it’s ‘Hey, I’m doing this and it feels great.’” Each performer has a few solo songs. Brandon Vos, a Camby resident, is the music director. “It’s a fun show because I think a lot of the tunes are familiar to everybody,” Vos said. “It’s the boogie-boogie surfer rock and Beach Boys-type stuff. It’s just a lot of energy and a lot of fun for us and the

audience, too. There are participation moments a couple times.” Vos said there are more than 30 songs, mostly between 2 and 4 minutes long. “I’m in charge of specific parts of the music itself but they all bring their own personalities to it,” Vos said. Vos has worked with Indianapolis resident Brett Mutter at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Mutter previously acted in ATI’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” “I love tight harmonies and tight quartet singing,” Mutter said. Cast member Kieran Danaan, a New York City resident, made his ATI debut in “Mr. Confidential” in May 2023. “The four of us in this cast get to be so versatile,” Danaan said. “We get to explore different sides of ourselves. The four of us are witty, so it’s going to be a good time.” Danaan said most of the music was new to him. “The music is very relaxing but it’s also upbeat,” he said. “The music has a good message.” For more, visit atistage.org.
