COVER STORY

That’s the goal of Carmel businessmen and their Respect in Sport USA platform.

By Stuart Maxwell For Current in Carmel

Kids being overly and publicly berated, others suffering horrific sexual abuses, still others being targets for physical abuse. In sports alone. It happens in some form or fashion every day the world over. It doesn’t have to be that way, and it won’t be for long if three Carmel businessmen have their way. Local entrepreneurs Terry Anker, Jerrod Carter and Kent Burns recently announced the launch of a company aimed at delivering high-quality online training focused on the care and protection of individuals in occupational and recreational settings. The company, CrossConfirm (www. crossconfirm.com), is a public/private partnership with the American Red Cross and Respect in Sport, a partner of the Canadian Red Cross. Anker, a well-known Carmel businessman and investor, has successfully started, operated and spun-off many enterprises during the past 20 years. Carter comes as a veteran of several early stage and entrepreneurial companies, while Burns just wrapped up a winning eight-year stint as co-owner of one of the top executive recruiting firms in the country. CrossConfirm’s portfolio includes the exciting Respect in Sport USA platform that equips coaches and vol-

unteers in youth sports to recognize and respond to the signs of bullying, harassment, neglect and various forms of abuse that occur on and off the field. Dr. Emily Booth, director of the American Red Cross online training efforts, stated that “approximately 70 percent of all kids who participate in youth sports quit by the age of 13. Many cite the very reasons that this innovative coursework is designed to address.” Respect in Sport was the inspiration of National Hockey League standout Sheldon Kennedy. Aside from his considerable success on the ice, Kennedy is best known for his 1996 revelation of sexual abuse by a longtime former juniors coach. The Sheldon Kennedy Story aired in 1999, and his autobiography, “Why I Didn’t Say Anything - The Sheldon Kennedy Story,” followed in 2006. “We’re extremely excited that our company, based in Carmel, Ind. is bringing such an important program about protecting kids in sports to the United States,” Anker said. The self-paced program is comprised of six 30-minute segments and is completed entirely on line. The technology runs on virtually any computer and does not require a highspeed Internet connection. “The convenience of Respect in Sport is particularly appealing to busy coaches and volunteers”, Carter said. “Statistics show that 92 percent of the coaches who complete Respect in Sport say that they are better prepared to recognize the warning signs and know how to respond.”

THE ALARMING FACTS • 80 percent believe inappropriate behavior is destroying youth sports. – SportingKids magazine • Have you seen out-of-control adults at any of your games? Yes: 74 percent, No: 26 percent - Sports Illustrated for Kids • 80 percent of athletes were aware of sexual abuse and harassment issues and 30 percent of athletes said they felt “less than safe.” - University of Winnipeg • 45.3 percent of males and females surveyed said they have been called names, yelled at, or insulted while participating in sports. - Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission • During the past decade, 159 coaches in Washington state have been fired or reprimanded for sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to rape. Nearly all were male coaches victimizing girls. At least 98 of these coaches continued to coach or teach. - The Seattle Times

LAUNCH EVENT CrossConfirm will host the launch of Respect in Sport USA from 7:30 to 9 AM on Thursday at the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, 441 East 10th Street. In attendance will be a high-profile audience comprised of leaders in the sports, education, healthcare, political, faith-based and law enforcement communities. Former NFL great Barry Krauss, a Carmel resident and the reigning president of the NFL Alumni Association; Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi; and the aforementioned Kennedy will be among of the featured speakers. “Our aim is to create awareness and equip our audience with basic information to begin evangelizing this program in their spheres of influence. It is also to celebrate the public/private partnership between CrossConfirm and the American Red Cross that has been created as part of this process,” co-founder Kent Burns said.

MAKING IT WORK Respect in Sport USA’s success will be determined by the number of people who fully complete the online assessment and then put into practice what they learn from the outcome. If you know of a coach or organization who might be interested, more information is available at www. respectinsportusa.com, www. crossconfirm.com, or by contacting Burns at kent@crossconfirm. com.

OUR TAKES It is our position that the Carmel Redevelopment Commission has made the correct move in hiring Hirons & Co. as the marketing agency of record for various CRC efforts, not the least of which is the Arts & Design District. The move comes at a critical time, and could be the fulcrum needed to drive even more traffic – and wallets – to the redeveloped area that has shown itself to be quite popular and equally troubled. In recent weeks, we’ve heard added grumbling from merchants about a perceived lack of “urgent support” from city government. So just in the nick of time, with yet another business,

Smoothie King, having just bolted, the CRC is doing what probably should have been done at the outset. A case of betterlate-than never, we believe, although one would be hard-pressed to convince the now-departed businesses that tried and did not, for whatever reasons, succeed of that. The CRC says Hirons & Co. has worked with clients related to tourism, arts-related organizations, other economic development organizations, the public sector and retail and restaurant destinations. Ensuring the economic viability of the CRC’s projects is critical. Hirons & Co.’s expertise should prove to be just the ticket.

a different aftershock It is our position that Hoosiers must remain watchful for potential scammers during these days and weeks following recent seismic activity. Who could have anticipated that newspapers both nationally and across the state of Indiana would be talking about Hoosierland earthquakes, intensity, and aftershocks – earthquakes in Indiana!? We are strategically poised on the New Madrid seismic zone, but this earthquake came at us from another camp originating from the Wabash Valley seismic zone and sporting a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. Among the many aftershocks that rocked Indiana following the mid-month ground-shaker are the sales pressure

tactics by those who play upon those fears from the residents of Indiana in order to sell earthquake insurance and/or earthquake home-damage assessment services. Companies ranging from these carriers to law firms to risk management consultants all are engaged in unsolicited e-mail marketing blasts and other direct marketing approaches. Although most of these folks are likely above board, profiteers likely are in the mix. Caveat Emptor is the phrase of the day. Make prudent financial decisions about earthquake products and services in careful conjunction with consideration of less exotic and more likely natural events such as tornados, hail and fire.

Wanna write us a letter? You can do it a couple ways. The easiest is to e-mail it to info@currentincarmel.com. The old-fashioned way is to snail mail it

FROM THE BACKSHOP go ahead, take it to the bank Are we really experiencing a mortgagedefault “crisis”? Columnist John Stossel says we aren’t, and the statistics speak for themselves. If you believe statistics are for losers, stop reading. The facts: The Mortgage Bankers Association’s 2007 fourth-quarter survey reports that foreclosures came to 2.04 percent of all mortgages. Many of those were speculators seeking flip profits rather than homeowners losing a dream house. During the quarter, only 0.83 percent of homes entered the foreclosure process. It may get worse; in March, “foreclosure filings, default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions rose 5 percent,” Reuters reports. But let’s keep all this in perspective: Ninety-eight percent of borrowers are not in foreclosure. Only a small percentage of them are even late on payments. This so-called crisis, we believe, is one way for the candidates to justify making government even more gargantuan. We’ll not have it. Any of it. ••• We can’t wait until Westfield can put on and experience something like this: Rock the District, a free community-wide music festival and shopping extravaganza in Carmel, is scheduled for July 19. This year, we hear a familiar recording artist will be heading back to the town he calls home. It’ll be good to see you again, John. ••• A toast to the Friends of the Carmel Clay Library! Its spring book sale a couple weeks ago featured more than 30,000 items and grossed $14,300. We couldn’t be happier for one of the key, if not the key, institutions in our city. To those who bought, thank you! ••• Primary Election Day. May 6. It really does matters this time – more than usual. Do your part. The divorce rate is already at 50%. So though most of us are past this stage in our lives, marriage is just around the corner for some of our kids. Maybe we need to start rethinking the taboo of living together before marriage and look at it as a healthy, positive, first step toward a long-term commitment. Then instead of “Sorry, Mom,” we’d hear “Hey, thanks a lot!” Peace out.

ne of “Carmel’s own” is soon to receive a prestigious award from the American Liver Foundation for her tireless efforts to spread her Gospel:” BE AN ORGAN DONOR!” Ila Badger will be honored at the American Liver Foundation’s SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE on May 3 at the Westin Hotel. She’s the first “non doctor” to be so honored. The event is being co-chaired by two other longtime Carmelites, Alan and Sue Potasnik (it was Alan Danny who first tipped me off about this). O’Malia Ila and her husband, Jack, 40year Carmel residents, have been spreading their Gospel together since Ila received a long-awaited liver transplant in June of 2001. Diagnosed

in 1991 with primary sclerosing cholangitis, an autoimmune disease that gradually destroys the liver, Ila waited eight years to be put on the waiting list for a transplant. From there it took two more years to actually undergo the procedure. She’s being honored because, with Jack, she has spoken to three to four organizations per month about the urgency of the organ donor program. Ila marvels at the progress that’s been made with liver transplants in the seven years since hers. “I was on the waiting list two years; today it’s about 40 days. The surgery was nine hours. Today it’s three to four. I received 28 units of blood. Now it’s down to about three.” The O’Malia and Badger families are connected in a very intimate and typically Carmel way. In 1979, the Badgers lost their 10- year old son, Mark, to cancer. The Carmel Dads’ Club had bought a large tract it was going to develop for athletic fields just off 131st Street east of Gray Road. The CDC board of directors voted to name the park after Mark. And Jack oversaw

the development of the park and soccer fields from that point on. In 1985, my brother, David, and his wife, Cindy, lost their 3-year-old old son, Matt, to an aneurysm. In 1987, our cousin, Bill Weghorst, then coach of the Carmel Legion Baseball team, spearheaded an effort to build a baseball field in the park for the Legion (and at the time for Carmel High School’s team) and BADGER name it after Matt O’Malia. The Badgers were very supportive of that effort as well. Vintage Carmel! I plan to be at the event and expect to see many fellow Carmel citizens there. Interested? Call the Liver Foundation at 635-5074! See you there! Danny O’Malia is a contributor to Current Publishing. You may e-mail him at dannyo@thetrustpointe.com.

candidate concerned about young drivers Implementing innovative programs like Youth Drive Aware! and holding mock trials for 5th grade students, are just two ways Carmel City Judge Paul Felix reaches out to the community. Appointed to the bench in 2006 by Governor Mitch Daniels, Felix has taken FELIX strides to make his courtroom more productive and taxpayer friendly. “I run a fair and efficient court, Judge Felix said. “We helped ease the burden of so many cases being filed in the county by seeking to have more cases filed in the city court. Now, he hopes to make a positive impact in the Hamilton County courtroom. As a candidate for Circuit Court Judge, Felix plans to boost effectiveness in this legal venue. According to Judge Felix, “improving the county judicial system is a task on which I have already started working. Realizing a need in the community, Felix looks for solutions. His most recent program instituted, Youth Drive Aware!, was born out of a need to emphasize to young drivers the great responsibility they have when getting behind the wheel of an automobile. “I thought it was important to create this

program because of how many young drivers there are that are being stopped multiple times for speeding and other dangerous activity behind the wheel. I want to make our young drivers realize that they are not invincible and that their world can be flipped over in a split second,â€? Judge Felix said. The program offers discussion groups, including parents, young drivers and community members as well as public safety personnel. The meetings opened to the public and are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30th, May 28th, and July 2nd. All sessions will take place at Carmel City Court on the second floor of City Hall.

POLLS OPEN 6 TO 6 Polling places in Carmel for the May 6 primary election will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Voters must show a form of government-issued identification to the poll inspector or judge. Acceptable forms of identification include: an Indiana driver’s license, a passport or a military ID. By law, you must “put away all campaign materials, because they are forbidden within 50 feet of the polling place. This includes buttons and pamphlets, and don’t wear the “Vote for T-shirt.

If Americans trained for the Olympics like students prepare for education, would our contestants ever win a medal? Elite athletes look globally at their competition as should education in America. While there is a “global standard of education – which other countries are following - the United States doesn’t even have a national standard. Former Carmel resident and venture capitalist, Bob Compton is on a mission to let our society know that there are immense differences in the way students in Indiana approach education compared with their equal counterparts in India and China. According to an article in Indiana Business, Compton said, “While I was in Bangalore, I asked 5- and 6-year olds what they wanted to be and most of them said engineers or scientists. He said that he found American chilCOMPTON dren aspired to be rock stars and professional athletes. That experience gave Compton the idea to create a documentary that would illustrate the academic disparity.

Two Million Minutes is a powerful, 54-minute documentary film that follows six high school seniors from India, China and the U.S. to compare and contrast the high school experience in each country. How kids spend their precious time – approximately four years, or two million minutes - during high school in each culture is radically different and has profound implications for America’s economy in the decades ahead. A trailer of the film can be seen at www.2mminutes.com

When Will Oil Prices Stop Rising? Watch the Dollar: Oil prices, which are setting fresh records nearly every day, are likely to keep climbing until the weak U.S. Dollar starts recovering and more supplies become available. U.S. light, sweet crude, which has risen $117 a barrel, is now expected to rise to $125 barrel and beyond. That’s more than double what oil cost just a year ago. Strong world demand on OPC’s refusal to boost output still play a role in the price run-up. But the main culprits are the weak U.S. dollar and rampant speculation by hedge funds and other investors. -Money Magazine

Profit Plunges: Bank of America Corp.’s quarterly profits plunged 77 percent as the bank set aside more cash for bad loans and took another write-down on its mortgage-related portfolio, the company spokespersons said Monday. The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank managed to stay in the black: Net income fell to $1.21 billion, or 23 cents a share, from $5.26 billion, or $1.16 a share, a year ago. The first-quarter results, however, were worse than expected, as analysts surveyed by earnings tracker Thomson Financial had forecast profits of 41 cents a share. - Money Magazine

Rolling Back Prices to No. 1: For the second year in a row, retail giant WalMart shot to the top of the 2008 Fortune 500 list. A face-lift and even lower prices kept the world’s largest retailer afloat in a troubled economy. Staring down the barrel of brutal fourth-quarter retail forecasts, CEO Lee Scott dramatically cut prices on 15,000 items – including popular toys and electronics – by 20 percent more than usual to lure holiday shoppers. That rocked the industry, pressuring other retailers to squeeze already tight margins. - Money Magazine

why do children misbehave?

I

HONESTY WITH THEMSELVES

found it very interesting to break down underlying reasons why children misbehave. In order to be proactive we need to discover the underlying need for the misbehavior so our children’s needs will be satisfied. Once we can identify the need, the behavior usually subsides. Some reasons for us to consider next time our children are misbehaving: According to Watters, there are four categories to address. They are Physical, Cognitive, Emotional and Spiritual. We’ll break down each category into needs.

PHYSICAL

1. Accept responsibility for their own actions. 2. Don’t blame others. 3. Be honest with their feelings. 4. Face issues as they arrive. Don’t skirt the issue. 5. When considering a lie, think of the consequences. 6. Think of others when confronted with a particular situation.

Speech and Hearing Screenings May is Better Speech and Hearing Month. Speech Pathology Services is offering speech and hearing screenings for children age 3 and older throughout the month at our Carmel location (980 E. 116th St, Suite 300.) Screenings take approximately 15 minutes and will be offered at a charge of $15. If you have concerns about your child’s speech, language or hearing, please call our office at 843-2801 to schedule a screening.

1. Not making excuses for our children when they haven’t completed a task, performance, and homework. 2. Not putting the blame on others for something undesirable our children are involved in. 3. React to the undesirable event without making them feel guilty. 4. Children must tell the truth despite the consequences. The consequence must fit the lie in order for the message to be effective. Once again, children, for the most part, do NOT WANT to misbehave. It is up to us, as their mentors, to help them understand their misbehavior so that they can, truthfully, understand themselves. We owe them that much. Hugs! Have a parenting topic or question? Submit it to Ask Yiayia, aka Becky Kapsalis, Certified Parent Coach, at askyiayia@indy.rr.com or call 810.9358.

FUZZY BRAIN NO MORE: Scientists may have learned why some people retain sharp minds and clear memories. In comparing the brains of these people to others who had all symptoms of Alzheimer’s, the researchers said they found those who avoided dementia consistently had a larger part of the brain called the hippocampus. The findings could inspire new ideas for combating Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly. — Msnbc.msn.com

lengthen your life this way

f you do nothing else, make these life-lengthening habits part of your daily routine:

1. Walk for 30 minutes. You can hoof it all at once, or break it into two 15-minute or three 10-minute sessions. Just get your body moving and your heart rate going! Aim to take 10,000 steps a day; a pedometer will help you track your steps.

2. Floss and brush the teeth you wish to keep. If that’s not enough to motivate you, do it for the heart you wish to nurture, the wrinkles you wish to prevent, or the intimate satisfaction you wish to enjoy. 3. Drink several cups of green tea in addition to plenty of water. It’ll help flush out toxins and other baddies.

4. Take your pills: Get into the habit of popping omega-3s; 1 gram of metabolically distilled omega-3 fatty acids about 30 minutes before lunch and again before dinner should do the trick. Or skip the supplements and instead eat six walnuts twice a day, or 4 ounces of non-fried fish (not shellfish) three times a week. Remember to take your other vitamins and supplements by keeping them in a convenient location like your car, desk, or handbag. ... AIR EXERCISE: Add air to classic body-weight exercises for an athletic challenge. Alternate between two movements, such as squats and pushups, but make them explosive by pushing yourself up with enough force so your feet and hands leave the floor on squats and pushups, respectively. Do 10 reps of each move and rest 10 seconds. Then do 9 reps of each exercise and rest 10 seconds. Continue with this pattern down to 1 rep. Repeat the sequence up to 5 times. — Menshealth.com

EXERCISE YOUR EYES - Some say that vision is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. Doing these exercises can provide relief for tired eyes. Massage your eyes for a short while each morning. This is said to reduce the chance for myopia. Try this: Hold up a finger or a pencil in front of you, about six inches away. Choose a prominent object, e.g. a chimney, tree, flag, etc. at least 20 feet away. Alternate your focus between the near and far objects, looking at each for about two seconds at a time. Repeat until you feel your eyes really working, then persevere some more.

That all ended, however, after I attended a Riedel Crystal tasting. Riedel stemware is the design by which all others are measured. It is made from Austrian lead crystal and some lines are hand blown, while others are machine crafted. Riedel stemware has quite the history, being lauded by the likes of Winston Churchill. Worldrenowned wine critic Robert Parker even states “The

Another prime example is the champagne flute, whose elongated bowl is specifically designed to give the bubbles ample time to develop during their rise before popping on the surface. While wine geeks like myself have around 20 different varietal-specific designs, true wine enthusiasts should invest in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Chardonnay/Chablis and champagne stems. inco de Mayo is not the Mexican Independence Day; that is September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico as an incredible victory at the “Battle of Puebla” over the imperialistic French, who tried to take rule of Mexico 1862. In the United States, we should be celebrating Cinco de Mayo as the day that the Mexicans stopped the French from supplying aid to the Confederate armies in the south. ust about anywhere you drive today you can find little Mexican groceries, restaurants, carnicerias (meat markets) and panaderias (bakaries). If you’ve never stopped into one of these markets on your way to the “super-mart,” you owe it to yourself to “stop and smell the tortillas.” There are very few better ways to immerse yourself in Mexican culture than with the

wine and culinary shops. Before choosing your glass, you should consider your stemware needs. Will they be used for entertaining? Do they need to be dishwasher-safe? Are you a casual wine drinker or serious enthusiast? If your glassware will be used by guests/friends and act as more of a vessel for liquid than an enhancer of the experience of wine, then any dishwasher-safe stemware will do; however, almost all fine crystal stemware will need to be washed by hand. Now this of course begs the question, “Do crystal glasses really make

effect of Riedel Stemware on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize the difference these glasses make. ” After many tests, I have to agree. The primary physical difference between crystal and glass is at the microscopic level; crystal is actually more jagged than glass, which can help to accelerate aeration of the wine. Another difference lies in the shape of the glass. For example, you will notice immediately the distinction in design between the Burgundy (pinot noir) and Bordeaux (cabernet sauvignon/merlot) glasses. Pinot Noir is a hyper-complicated grape,

Tequila is one of only two denominations of origin (or D.O.) spirits in North America. This means that to actually be called “tequila, it must be produced in a strictly defined geographic region; in this case, it’s the Jalisco state in Mexico and a few small outlying areas. Other examples of D.O. spirits are Scotch, Cognac, and Armagnac. When made properly, tequila can be one of the most enjoyable and complex sipping liquors in the world. While all tequila is made from a plant known as the blue agave (most think it’s a cactus, in fact it is more closely related to the lily), the highest quality tequilas are made from 100% blue agave, and will typically be labeled as such. The most important thing to know when choosing a premium tequila is that there are four levels of the spirit, each increasing in quality and complexity.

Tequila Specials Casa Noble Crystal Tequila (750ml) This tequila is in a class by itself. 1

Joven Abogado—This literally means “young and adulterated. This is the lowest quality tequila, using only the bare minimum of blue agave and generally significant amounts of additives (such as flavored sugars and food coloring). Jose Cuervo or any “gold/oro tequilas are prime examples of this.

2

Blanco—Blanco tequilas are the rawest expression of the spirit (as they go directly from the still to the bottle) and for this reason are a favorite of tequila purists. Sometimes they need be cut with a bit of spring or distilled water to bring the proof down to 80. They will always be clear and almost never spend any time maturing in casks.

Reposado—Tequilas with this designation must spend a minimum of 60 days or up to one year in oak casks. Aging will always add color and complexity to the spirit, as well as soften it a bit. Most tequilas are aged in old American Bourbon barrels, while a few age in new oak casks.

4

Anejo & Extra Anejo—Typically the most expensive and highest quality, Anejo tequila must spend at least one year maturing in oak, but usually sits for 18 months to two years. The best tequilas (Extra Anejo) will be left to age for five or six years, adding depth and complexity to the finished product. Always remember to look for the “100% agave on the label (even on the Anejo) and don’t forget that terms like “platinum and “gold have zero bearing on a tequila’s quality; these are used as marketing buzzwords only. I hope this helps guide you through the wonderful world of premium tequila. There’s just so much to discover!

A Fashion Tip for Men! Always match your belt with your shoes. This is a good rule to follow and it keeps things simple. It’s best to stay with traditional colors such a black, dark brown or a rich tan. Other colors will be difficult to match, and generally speaking, should be avoided. If you wear sneakers every day that probably means you are wearing jeans in which case I suggest trying a belt made of fabric or something equally as casual, but please avoid dress belts with jeans and sneakers. If you wear suspenders, I am compelled to ask you why, but I digress. Just don’t wear a belt and suspenders together, it’s one or the other – About.com Make Your Home Look Like a Million BuckS with a Few Details • Paint your white walls with a warm color such as yellow, orange, or red to give your rooms a more inviting feel. • Spread scented candles throughout your home to give it a cozy atmosphere. • Old postcards can make impressive, beautiful, and inexpensive artwork when framed • Something as simple as a of oranges can create an interesting touch to any room. • Hang any framed work about 5 ½ to 6 feet from the ground, just above eye level. ‘SHOE-INS’ FOR SUMMER Strappy, sexy and ready for action, these BCBG sandals are hot at any price, and even hotter because they’re on sale for more than $60 off. Many women love how these sandals combine dressier elements like shiny metallic straps with the more casual woven wedge heels. They’re available in lots of colors and sizes, and any of the available colors would be perfect for summer days or nights. Romantic, daring and sexy all at the same time, these sizzling Stuart Weizman d’Orsay pumps are the epitome of “alluring” footwear. They’re also gorgeous in black or white satin, but given the satin rose ornamentation, who could resist the red? Appropriately made in Spain, these stunners have 3.75” heels and are guaranteed to turn heads. “Ooh-la-la,” is the reaction you might get while wearing Cynthia Vincent sandals. They feature giant sparkly jewels on the skimpy straps. These gems are perfect for wearing with shorts, skirts, dresses ... really, just about anything, and since there is so little to them, they’ll make your legs look super-long when paired with shorter fashions. Remember though, your feet and toes have to be in tip-top shape to pull sandals like these off.

By Barbara E. Cohen Current In Carmel The theme of the first group show for the new Herron Non-Traditional Students organization sets the tone for this week’s First Friday gallery events around town. With such a wide range of exhibitions opening, one is going to be right up your alley. “Eclectic-ism” at the Community Museum Laboratory of Herron School of Art and Design, IUPUI, is about work participants call art “that does not hold rigidly to a single paradigm or a set of assumptions, but instead draws upon multiple theories, styles or ideas.” Fifteen students who feel they don’t fit in with the “ideal” art student population have joined forces for this event. Lorie Lee Andrews, a mother of three from Carmel, grew up in Puerto Rico and taught preschool at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis before returning to college for a fine arts degree. Teresa Murphy, Noblesville, graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School and moved away until a divorce brought her and her daughter home to Indiana. WHICH FACILITY IS RIGHT FOR ROVER? By Michelle Alexander Current in Carmel

You have your bags packed and are ready to head out for a week of vacation. Bathing suit? Check. Camera? Check. The right “someone” to care for the dog in your absence? Uh-oh. Finding the right place to board your dog takes research to make sure the dog’s vacation is as fulfilling as yours. All reputable dog boarding facilities will require that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, including distemper and rabies, and most also require bordetella to prevent canine cough. Your options: 1. Traditional boarding facilities offer a safe environment for your dog, who will spend most of his day in a cage and have little to no interaction with other boarders. Caring staff will feed, water and let your dog out to do his business, but they may charge extra for walks, one-on-one playtime, or administering medications. These costs can add significantly to the base rate of the boarding stay. 2. Open play environments are ideal for more active, social dogs. Dogs often have to pass an ‘interview’ process to make sure they play well with other dogs. Questions to

DISPATCHES YOU KNEW IT WAS BAD: But, this bad? In nice weather you may be tempted to take your pet with you in the car while you travel or do errands. The inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even if you’re parked in the shade. Dogs and cats can’t perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. Pets that are left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die. - Humane Society of the U.S. Things they don’t always tell you: So, you want fish? Well, the water in your tank should be changed twice a month. Before you put your fish in the water, let the water stand for about two weeks. Yes, two weeks. This gets rid of gasses in the water that could be harmful to your fish. Also, remember the water should be conditioned before use. - thinkquest.org

ask of staff include: 1) Are the play yards indoor /outdoor or just indoor? 2) Do all dogs play together or are they divided by size and temperament? 3) What is the required staff to dog ratio? 4) How does the staff manage the dogs’ behaviors in an open play environment? ••• Because doggie daycare and boarding is a service-based

industry, the facility should be able to accommodate your dog’s needs within reason. This may include feeding your dog his particular diet two or three times per day, providing extra naps as needed or administering medications. Also, ask about staff training. The staff should have basic training in dog behavior and first aid, and all staff should be aware of emergency procedures in case a dog becomes ill or is injured. Safety features to look for include fire alarms, smoke alarms, ambient temperature controls and emergency evacuation procedures. Check to see what environmental barriers are present to keep your dog safe if he were to escape from his kennel or play yard. Cleanliness is also important to ensure your dog is not exposed to bacteria, viruses, or other bugs that may cause illness. Floors and all contact surfaces should be swept and mopped frequently with chemicals that are dog-safe yet provide optimal cleaning and prevent unwanted smells. Finally, take your dog to tour the facility and perhaps let him spend a day before you leave him for an extended stay. Yes, Virginia, cats and birds can live together harmoniously in the same house, as long as their owners are willing to take the precautions that are necessary for the safety of both. If you have a cat and want a bird, or vice versa, you should understand that in nature, the two would be enemies - predator and prey. While the natural roles of your pets can be altered, it’s important that both are kept under close supervision to ensure that no disputes arise. If your cat shows an interest in hunting your bird, try giving it a quick spritz with

a water bottle. Most of the time, this will be enough to curb a cat’s predatory instincts after a while. Likewise, if your bird shows aggression to your cat, discipline is in order. Birds are able to catch certain diseases from cats, and direct exposure to a cat’s fur (through biting, for example) can heighten your feathered friend’s risk of getting sick. With consistent training, both pets should learn to tolerate each other rather quickly. Many owners have even been surprised to find that their birds and cats quite enjoy each other’s company under proper supervision

STOP THE ESCAPE ARTIST: If your dog is an expert at breaking out, try these to quell his desire to roam: Walk your dog daily. Teach your dog to fetch a ball, and be sure to practice as often as possible. Teach your dog a few commands and/or tricks. Practice these commands and/or tricks every day for five to 10 minutes. - ddfl.org FIDO HAVE AN UPSET STOMACH? Go for the ultra-bland diet. ou’re probably wondering why a dazzling urban sophisticate such as me drives a vehicle so utilitarian, so rural, so non-dazzling as a Ford pickup truck. OK, so you’re not wondering. Well, I’m going to tell you anyway. I drive a pickup for practical reasons. It’s splendid for hauling the Christmas tree off to be recycled. There’s no better vehicle for driving someplace with your dog. And I drive one Mike Redmond for safety reasons, Humor because this time of year, in Indiana, getting behind the wheel of something large is really the only prudent way to drive. It is in my neighborhood, anyway, where a pickup truck is about the only civilian vehicle that won’t disappear into the waterfilled hole in the alley behind my garage. The hole in the alley is about 15 feet long and in a couple of places, going on six inches deep – although you can’t really tell about the depth. This makes it a small but treacherous pond, and one which generates lots of extra business for the neighborhood Firestone dealer. In fact, I’ve taken to calling it Lake Realignment. Actually, it is not because of the city that the alley goes unpaved. It is because some of my neighbors are those nose-in-the-air types who seem to have no interests other than lecturing the rest of us about preserving the historic character of our neighborhood, including the alleys. Now, you’ll notice I have avoided calling the lake in the alley what I always called such things in the past, namely a chuckhole. I’m still smarting from the last time I used the word chuckhole and got all kinds of mail from people insisting that chuckholes are properly called potholes, and chiding me for such a gooberish locution. It should be noted that about half these letters were from guys named Charles. A few of them were sufficiently insulting as to make the writers seem like holes of another sort. I grew up calling these things chuckholes, so named after the woodchucks that dug big holes directly in the paths of horses. Never mind asking how much wood a woodchuck could chuck. I want to know where he chucked the paving material so I can bring it back to the alley. I have just the truck for the job.
