Founded by poets, artists, and writers, the Armitt is the quintessence of the cultural Lakes. Today, it presents a permanent exhibition devoted to its greatest benefactor, Beatrix Potter. ‘Image and Reality’ reaches beyond the popular image to her extraordinary life and achievements. Kurt Schwitters, the German modernist lived and worked in Ambleside. One of the most influential artists of the 20th Century, our collection of his work is of international importance. In our library visitors enjoy browsing the magnificent collection of antiquarian books, manuscripts and other displays. The Armitt is truly one of the rarest treasures of the Lakes. Dove Cottage is much as it was when Wordsworth left in 1808. Here and in the museum are the only places in the world where his possessions and manuscripts are displayed together. An entertaining guided tour gives a vivid impression of life here, the people who visited and their exploits! The Wordsworth Museum tells Wordsworth’s remarkable life story, his tragic childhood, his travels through the French revolution, his radical ideas which are so relevant today and how he changed literature forever. The Lakeland Horticultural Society’s Gardens at Holehird are probably unique in being developed and completely maintained by volunteers as well as being funded entirely by donations and, in the summer months, from the sale of plants propagated from the garden. The 17 acre hillside garden includes specimen trees and shrubs, extensive rock and heather gardens, alpine houses, a walled garden and herbaceous borders. The superb Lakeland setting also contains a small woodland walk and water features. The Society holds four National Collections of Astilbe, Daboecia, Meconopsis and Polystichum Ferns as well as having a renowned collection of Hydrangea. OPENING TIMES Open all year from dawn to dusk. Lord and Lady Inglewood’s ancient house in the medieval Forest of Inglewood was originally built as a stronghold against the Scots. Their family has lived at Hutton for over 400 years and the house has evolved through centuries of change into an architectural puzzle with each generation leaving its mark both inside and outside. The extensive gardens with topiary and terraces, a wild flower meadow and lake, lead round to the Walled Garden which is now the main flower garden. Tulips and lilies, herbaceous borders, roses and fruit trees are a mass of colour and interest throughout the summer. Adjacent to the 12th Century de Boyville stronghold, Kirklinton Hall is said to have been built from its stone. Begun in the 1670’s, extended in the 1870’s and ruined in the 1970’s, the Hall has been a Restoration Great House, an RAF base, a school, a gangsters’ gambling den and worse. Walk in the footsteps of Norman Knights, Cavalier Commanders, Victorian Plutocrats and the Kray twins. Now, Kirklinton Hall and its Gardens are being restored by the Boyle family to its former glory, a painstaking and fascinating process. A fascinating collection of some 30,000 exhibits which trace the development of road transport throughout the twentieth century – cycles, motorbikes, motor cars and automobilia. Plus the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition which pays tribute to Sir Malcolm Campbell and son Donald who between them captured 21 world land and water speed records. Highlights include full size detailed replicas of the 1935 Bluebird car, the 1939 Bluebird boat (K4), and the famous 1967 jet hydroplane Bluebird K7. The museum incorporates the Leven Valley Heritage Centre which details how life used to be at work in the local Blue Mill, gunpowder factories, iron works and woodland industries. 350 years of social history and fascinating human stories are brought to life in over 40 vibrant embroidered panels at the award-winning Quaker Tapestry Museum. Journey through the Quaker influence on the modern world: explore the industrial revolution, developments in science and medicine, astronomy, the abolition of slavery, social reform, and ecology; delight in the detail of the stunning needlework and the craftsmanship involved in its creation; and admire the Georgian Meeting House, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2016. With interactive displays, films, audio guides and children’s activities there’s something for visitors of all ages. DIRECTIONS The Quaker Tapestry Museum is in Kendal town centre on the one way system. It is a one minute walk from the central bus station and a six minute walk from Kendal train station. Step-free access is via the Stramongate entrance.

Swarthmoor Hall is a 16th century country house set in beautiful gardens. Visitors speak about its tranquillity. A writer commented: “The fictional dramas of Downton Abbey seem relatively tame to the actual events in Swarthmoor Hall’s history. The birthplace of the Quaker movement has all the elements of a great screenplay: love, conflict, conviction and passion.” There are six historic rooms to view with a fine selection of 17th century furniture. The new barn café continues the Hall’s centuries old reputation for hospitality, serving delicious sweet and savoury dishes sourced from talented local artisans and food producers – Jumping Jenny and the Fat Flour Bakery. OPENING TIMES The Hall is open for day visitors from Monday 22 February to Sunday 30 October Monday – Friday (except the last Thursday of each month): 10.30am – 4.30pm, Saturday, Sunday & last Thursday each month 1.30- 4.30pm. The Barn Café is open 7 days a week from 10.30am-4.30pm.
DIRECTIONS Swarthmoor Hall is on the outskirts of Ulverston. M6 - J36. Follow A590 to Ulverston. Turn left off the A590 in the centre of the town following brown tourist road signs.

The five acre garden was originally laid out at the end of the 19th Century. The mature trees, Wellingtonia, Cut-leaved Beech, and Cedar date from this time. Extensive work has been recently carried out to the rockeries, herbaceous borders and pond area. There is now a large collection of Salvias for Autumn colour, Herbaceous and Himalayan Plants. There is a picnic area by the pond where the Primulas are very colourful in the Spring. We sell second hand gardens tools and plants. Vegetables and fruit are available from the walled garden when in season. OPENING TIMES Open 1 Mar – 31 Oct, Mon - Fri 10am-4pm, Sat10am-2pm
