We have planned another memorable summer for your wonderful children! You and your children will find many new and exciting classes which were designed with them in mind.

Once again, we will golf, swim, cook, act, and exercise. For our high school group, we have expanded last year’s Discover South Jersey class to Discover the Tri-State area.

At your request, we have changed the time we open the doors in the morning to 6:15 a.m. I hope that this will give those of you who need a few extra minutes the time required to get your child settled at camp and go to your place of employment knowing that your child is being well cared for by our staff. We will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th. Most of our teaching staff are New Jersey certified teachers, as are many of our support staff personnel. Our staff is well trained in curriculum and classroom management, and all of them are creative, upbeat, and hard working. Cumberland County College’s Summer Academy for Kids is a program dedicated to providing students with a positive environment where they can expand their learning, gain life skills and develop lifelong friendships. Many classes have limited seating, so don’t wait too long. Childhood is the most beautiful of all life’s seasons! We look forward to providing your child with an educational and fun experience this summer.

Summer Academy for Kids is pleased to offer a monthly payment option through the FACTS financial network for families with more than $500 in camp costs per student. NEW THIS YEAR – Online Registration Summer Academy for Kids is pleased to present our new, easy to use, online registration service. You can use it for both new and returning students. The new system will create a new student ID so you won’t need any passwords or logins from previous years. In addition, you can use a credit card or bank check to pay for your classes. To access the online registration, visit our website at: www.cccnj.edu/safk and follow the instructions that link you to the new site. Office You are always invited to come to our office to register for classes. Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. When you receive it, please file it away for taxes next year. Our tax ID number is 22-1779135. Cancellations & Refund Policy Refunds will only be issued if the Director is notified by the parent or guardian in writing five (5) days prior to the start of the weekly session. There will be no refunds thereafter. A $25.00 processing fee will be deducted from the refunded amount.

Class Selection – age 5 to 13 Each week you may choose from a selection of classes in the morning and/or in the afternoon. Please use the course name when filling out the registration form. If you require either before and/or after care, please check the appropriate area on the registration form. We always urge parents to sign up early for classes to ensure that the children get the classes they want most. Most classes in this age group are $75.00 per class or half day session for the week and $150.00 for a full day session for the week. Several classes in each age group have a $20.00 lab fee associated with them to cover extra costs specific to those classes. Class Selection – age 14 to 17 For the high school classes, most weeks offer either a morning or afternoon session. However, there are two weeks when the session is a full day, mostly due to travel. We ask that when students register for these classes, they plan to stay for a full day. All classes in this age group are $90.00 per class or half day session. For students registering for a full day, a discounted price of $160.00 is being offered. Limited Space A limited number of spaces are available in each class. Campers will be accepted and registered on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date their completed applications and payments are received, including ALL required documentation. Campers will be accepted until all spaces are filled. If a qualified camper cannot be accommodated because all spaces have been filled, his/her name will be entered on a waiting list. We will call you if a seat becomes available.

Story Time Theatre I

Clay & Crafts with Clay College

Don’t you just love fun games to play while also getting some physical activity? Come try out Banana Split, Name Shout, Follow Me, Maple Syrup Pull Up, and many more. This class is taught by one of our physical education instructors. You are sure to have a great time!

Come and explore the athlete within you and let’s get moving. Kid Fit is a weeklong array of non-contact sports and fun games. You will learn the basics about different sports and feel confident playing them. We’ll play indoors if it rains.

Kids, you’re gonna get your hands dirty in this one! Come explore and experiment with a variety of different art materials and techniques to create three dimensional art. Staff from Clay College will instruct students in a variety of activities. Lab fee: $20.

Paint and Pottery

Scales & Tails

If you like painting (and who doesn’t) and would like to create your own pottery, this is the class for you! Join Carmie from Carmie’s Pottery Paint Works as she shows you how to make that special item that only you can make.

Have you ever wondered where a parrot lives, what a hedgehog’s quills feel like, or what a gecko eats? Join us to find out and learn so much more! We will be spending the week learning all about various species of exotic animals and recreating their habitats. You may even get to see an exotic animal or two in person!

Don’t you love a good story? Come learn the basics of acting through exciting games and other activities. We will create characters, act out stories and take our imagination on a test drive! This class will be taught by a drama student under the direction of Deborah Bradshaw, Director of Theatre Programs at Cumberland County College. We will include storytelling, music and singing, theatre exercises and games.

All About Me Just like a snowflake, you are unique! This is a time to learn more about ourselves and our new summer camp friends as we share about ourselves and our summer experiences. At the end of the week, we will make a very special art project that will help us remember this special summer, our special friends and how they make us the special people we are.

Weather Rangers Ever wonder why it is hot one day and cold the next day? Where does hail come from? How do we predict the weather? Join us and find out about the different types of weather, what instruments are used by meteorologists and other interesting and fun facts about weather.

Button, Button, Who Has The Button? Buttons are easy to find and fun to collect. Raid your button collection and get crafting. You will make jewelry, button bouquets, play games with buttons, and lots of other fun things that you can do with a simple button.

Symphony of the Five Senses Make sense of your senses. Discover how sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch are related. You will do art projects, listen to books, make predictions, and many other fun activities as you discover the world around you.

Dig Ancient Egypt Come and discover the Land of the Pharoahs. What is meant by the “gift of the Nile?” How do you write Egyptian? Learn all of this and more when you take this class.

Play Date With Technology How about a day exploring technology? In this interactive class, you can check out other time zones, see animals, oceans and your own backyard on a live web cam. We’ll play games and explore the computer in a safe environment.

Collage Creations Collage is an art form that can be created by kids of all ages. Every collage is different, just like you. Using wrapping paper, wallpaper, magazine pages, ribbons, lace, pictures, even junk drawer items will make a beautiful collage!

The Land Down Under G’day mates! Come discover Australia and learn about the animals that live there, the climate of this continent, and the food that the Australian people eat. By the way, how did the kangaroo get its pouch?

Clay & Crafts with Clay College Kids, you’re gonna get your hands dirty in this one! Come explore and experiment with a variety of different art materials and techniques to create three dimensional art. Staff from Clay College will instruct students in a variety of activities. Lab fee: $20.

The Books of Dr. Seuss Oh, the Places You’ll Go with the books of Dr. Seuss. Catch up on your summer reading with The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs & Ham, and The Lorax. Coloring, crafts, songs, and dance will be a part of this class. Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Enjoy The Ride Cars, trucks, buses, airplanes, trains, ships, just to name a few. Choose your favorite mode of transportation and learn all about it. We will play car games, study road signs, and even direct traffic in our classroom.

Playdoh We will get creative with the many colors of Play-Doh while we make our favorite animals, foods, and many other shapes and objects. Get your hands on and your hands in this class by playing all morning with the international can of fun known as Play-Doh!

The ABC's of Cooking Kids will design and help make recipes based on popular children’s books. Some of the books we will use include: Mud Tacos, Strega Nona, The Ugly Vegetables, and Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. Each little chef will make and take a cookbook with recipes from the stories. Make Friends with Nature Fish, ducks, flowers and ladybugs are all a part of our environment. We will study these and many more. We will learn to treat nature exactly how we want to be treated; with courtesy, gentleness, and respect.

T-Ball

Are we there yet? Document your imaginary road trip using pictures, drawings, postcards, and your journal. Play car games, read road signs, and navigate your way through a wonderful adventure!

Week 7 • August 6-10 MORNING

Track & Volleyball Once again, these two hugely popular sports are paired up for an exciting SAFK experience. Both instructors will match the students by size and age so that they get the full experience. We’ll start with some muscle stretching and drills and then play for an hour and a half. After a cool down, the teams switch sports.

High Flying Fun Oh, go fly a kite. Seriously, we would love it if you came to fly a kite. Watch the skies come alive with colorful kites. This class will help students learn about different kinds of kites, as well as design and show off their own handmade kites as they take flight into the fun summer breeze. Don’t miss it!

AFTERNOON

The game is the entry sport to baseball and softball for young players. The children take turns hitting a ball off a batting tee set on home plate. Batters try to get on base and advance to home; fielders try to prevent that from happening. Tee ball develops the primary baseball and softball skills of hitting, running, fielding and throwing. The children will learn the fundamental rules of the game. Bring your glove.

AFTERNOON

Super Heroes Enjoy the journey inside the world of real life caped crusaders. From all over America, these self-proclaimed crime fighters don masks, homemade costumes and elaborate utility belts in an attempt to bring justice to evildoers everywhere. Learn more about the super heroes you are already familiar with and make up your own super hero.

Road Trip

Land Before Time Join Ducky, Littlefoot, Cera, Petrie, and Spike as they travel the ruins of their world and band together to face the odds of survival. Learn which type of dinosaur is your favorite. We will explore all things relating to dinosaurs to find out how they lived, what they ate, and how they behaved. Books, songs, and fun will all be a part of this class!

A Horse is a Horse, of Course, of Course Did you know that horses can sleep both lying down and standing up? Did you know that horses gallop at approximately 27 miles per hour? Did you know that horses have bigger eyes than any other mammal that lives on land? Find out more interesting facts about horses in this class while playing games, doing crafts, and having lots and lots of fun!

Seeds and Sprouts

Have you got a green thumb? Then come watch your garden grow! Our young horticulturists will explore the fascinating life cycle of plants. They will learn how vegetables and herbs grow, and bring home their potted plants to put in their very own gardens.

Space is the Place

Based on the book, Safari, So Good! from the Dr. Seuss Learning Library, this class takes you to Africa where you will learn about some really big cats–and all sorts of other animals, too. These include elephant, zebra, giraffe, hippo, buffalo, baboon, spotted hyena, python, viper, and six kinds of antelope! Did you know that elephants tend to favor one tusk over the other, how to tell the difference between a white and black rhino (both of which are grey!), that lion cubs are born covered with spots that soon disappear, and much, much more!

Put on your flight suit and space boots and join us as we discover what’s going on up there in outer space. Roam the moon to learn about its surface, discover the solar system, and make an edible space shuttle. Learn about the world of astronomy. You may even sleep under the stars!

Pint Sized Painters In this class, you will make many exciting crafts and do art activities through painting. Using various kinds of paints, you will show your creativity and enthusiasm for art!

Disney Dreams Join Mickey, Minnie, Bambi, The Little Mermaid, Alice in Wonderland and so many more of your favorites from Disney as we play games, do hands on activities, and enjoy the Wonderful World of Disney!

We Are Family By this time in the camp schedule, all of the children feel like they are part of a big happy family. This class will focus on doing activities together, getting along with each other, teamwork, cooperation, and other traits that make a family work.

Wearable Art In this class, you will decorate T-shirts, flip flops, hats, and other items that you bring to class to personalize. End the summer on a fashion high with your new wardrobe.

Cupcakes take the cake! In a world where everything is getting big and bigger, the cupcake stands out as a reminder that good things come in small packages. You’ll learn decorating tips and icing techniques as you decorate your cupcake projects. Come join Chef Jeffrey Knerr for this fun class. Everyone gets to eat the homework!

The student will explore hand-building techniques including pinch, coil and slab. Students will experience the entire process of pottery from creating the pieces to glazing and firing. Swim & Fit

Express your sense of creativity with Lego and K’nex building supplies. Create your own masterpieces or follow specific pattern instructions. Team-build or create unique vehicles and creatures. Imagine what you can build with hundreds of pieces of Legos and the K’nex.

Back by popular demand and still totally awesome! You’ll start the day with an hour in the fitness center under the direction of your own personal trainer! Then, it’s on to the pool where you’ll receive a half-hour lesson with a half-hour free swim. Limited seating of 13 students. Lab fee: $20.

PC Power Up Want to learn more about computers? Become one of our computer whiz kids and hop onboard! We’ll whiz through word processing and zip through design challenges this summer. We’ll design posters, decorate poems, outline puzzles, and more! We’ll learn about Microsoft Windows, Word, and clip art. Become even more creative as you power up for fun! Limited seating of 15 students.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid If you love the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, you won't want to miss our weeklong journey with Greg and Rowley. Discover the series one book at a time, make a time capsule, create the ideal haunted house, plan your dream vacation, and create your very own diary in this class for the not-so-wimpy kid.

A Bag Full of Fun Try your hand at a world of designer gift sacks. Make a sack for every season using blank bags and beautiful embellishments! Pick your size, pick your color, and go to town!

Electronic Media Students will examine and discuss the history of broadcasting as it applies to radio, television and computer mediums. Students will conduct a minimum of three webcast class interviews with three different professions from different backgrounds over the duration of the course.

Hula Party Aloha! Create a tropical paradise in your classroom! Let’s learn to hula and set our table for a festive luau complete with decorations. Join us for a beach bash where you will play games, wear leis, and enjoy a Hawaiian feast.

This program is a national skills competition for boys and girls to compete separately against their peers. Established in 1961, this program is the oldest NFL Youth Football program. Girls and boys will compete against each other in punting, passing, and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum.

Play Your Part If you love the performing arts, prepare to play your part! This class is designed to nurture individual creativity while teaching the discipline required to master the performing arts. Students will learn the processes involved in creating, rehearsing, and performing an ensemble theatre piece. The teachers will guide students as they hone their current acting skills and develop new ones.

Golf at Eastlyn Back by popular demand, we’re going to golf at Eastlyn. This week at SAFK you will play golf at Eastlyn Golf course every day. Each day includes a golf lesson. Students will get to practice on the driving range and of course, go golfing. If you have clubs, bring them. Otherwise, they will be supplied. Limited seating of 13 students. Lab fee: $20.

Stage Door This class is a continuation of Play Your Part and is designed to nurture individual creativity while teaching the discipline required to master the performing arts. You will learn the processes involved in creating, rehearsing, and performing an ensemble theatre piece. Stage Door's teachers will guide you as you hone your current acting skills and develop new ones.

Is there iron in your cereal? How do you make butter or rock candy? What can you make with cornstarch? What ingredients do you use to make a cake? Will an egg float or spin? What is a solution and emulsion? These are some of the questions we might answer as we explore basic biology, chemistry and physics using common items from the kitchen. During this session, you will have fun with kitchen science and chemical reactions as you combine, prepare or cook up a variety of mixtures.

Digital Photo You’ll start by learning how to see with the camera's eye. Photography is not just about pointing and pressing a button; it's a fun decision-making process that will teach you how to look more

Do you like to help in the kitchen? The class will make a new soup, entrée and dessert every day. You can beat the heat this summer by learning how to make delicious foods. We’ll talk about nutrition, learn how to set the table and of course, eat what we make! Limited seating of 13 students. Lab fee: $20.

Teaching 101

Duct Tape It

Are you thinking about becoming a teacher when you grow up? Do you like writing on the board? Would you like to learn how to decorate a bulletin board and classroom, create fun worksheets, lesson plans and maintain a grade book? If so, this is the class for you. From creating graphic organizers to grading papers, this course will provide you with all the necessary basics to become a Summer Academy for Kids “teacher.” This course is a definite A+.

In 1942, Johnson and Johnson revolutionized the world with an invention that can solve just about anything. It’s Duct Tape! Bring out your artistic side with a variety of designer colors and prints! The Duct Tape will become a toolbox to create a world of accessories.

Field Hockey The game of field hockey is a stick and ball game with origins dating back thousands of years. This class is taught by the VHS field hockey coach and assisted by a certified trainer. Criminal law, civil law, constitutional law, due process. Do you know how our legal system works? Enter the courtroom as judge, juror, prosecutor, defense attorney or witness, and learn, through mock trial simulations, how our democratic legal system operates. As the courtroom drama unfolds, campers will make vital decisions and learn firsthand about the intricacies of our judicial system.

What makes a great story? Since prehistoric times stories were told, whether by a campfire or written on cave walls. Stories are a part of our everyday lives! Fiction, Fantasy, Horror…build a captivating story worth sharing!

Real World Math Attack

This course places an emphasis on Improvisation skills while exploring instincts, objectives and impulse. Students learn to take risks, make bold choices and accept the “yes, and” imperative. Since Improvisation is spontaneous acting, there is no limit to the scenes and characters that can be created on the spot. Through this class, students will learn techniques to sharpen impulse, imagination and teamwork.

This is an action packed class filled with fun. Come learn about challenging and interactive math mysteries that are taken from the real world. Play with numbers and give your brain a workout!!

Motion Graphics I Are you ready to add animation to your cartoon characters? Students will work with one of the leading computer programs: Adobe Flash. With the use of the computer, students will be able to give motion to 2-D images and create a cartoon animation. Limited seating of 15 students.

Broadway, Jr. Theatre lovers – get ready to perfect your craft! In this class you will work in small groups in order to develop acting techniques. The focus is on how your fellow actors and the environment can affect how a scene is played. The principles you will learn can be applied to any type of performance. The final class will allow you an opportunity to share what you have learned with family and friends. This class will be taught by CCC’s theatre students under the direction of Deborah Bradshaw, Director of Theatre programs at Cumberland County College.

Field Hockey The game of field hockey is a stick and ball game with origins dating back thousands of years. This class is taught by the VHS field hockey coach and assisted by a certified trainer. You’ll have fun learning about field hockey, one of the oldest sports around. You will receive instruction on the basic concepts and rules of this awesome game, while participating in fun filled mornings of playful drills and challenges. You’re going to get your hands dirty in this class! Come and explore pottery techniques including: pinch, coil and slab. We will introduce the pottery wheel later in the week. Punt, Pass & Kick This program is a national skills competition for boys and girls to compete separately against their peers. Established in 1961, this program is the oldest NFL Youth Football program. Girls and boys will compete against each other in punting, passing, and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum.

Restaurant Week Come learn all about the restaurant business. Prepare your resume, complete a job application and get interviewed for a position at a restaurant. Once hired, you will assume the role, take orders from customers, seat them at their table, prepare the menu, and assume many other responsibilities associated with a restaurant. At the end of the week, you will invite your family to dine at the restaurant in your classroom.

Conspire Me Crazy What’s the Truth? Explore famous and infamous stories. Learn the secrets behind them. You become the detective. You become the expert. You determine fact from fiction.

Latin Culture If you’ve ever thought about what Spanish culture is like outside of the United States, then this is the class for you. Take it to the next level as you experience the “fiesta” of food, dancing and traditions that await. Let the “juegos” begin.

Track & Volleyball Once again, these two hugely popular sports are paired up for an exciting SAFK experience. Both instructors will match the student by size and age so that they get the full experience. We’ll start with some muscle stretching and drills and then play for an hour and a half. After a cool down, the teams switch sports.

Motion Graphics II This course will go deeper into the area of motion graphics. The students will apply what they learned in Motion Graphics I by combining it with the leading coding language in Flash-ActionScript 3.0. This will allow the students to use the coding language to create user interactivity with their animations and create a basic Flash game. Limited seating of 15 students.

From Aerosmith to Zeppelin: The History of Rock ‘N Roll Muddy Waters to Beatles to Aerosmith to Maroon 5, rock and roll is here to stay with this overview and fantastic blast from the past to the present. Class examines the history of rock & roll, looking at the universal language that bridges generations, nationalities and people. This review will help music lovers understand how music has and is changing our world as well as reflecting it.

Epic Fail When normal, run-of-the-mill failure just isn’t enough! This is about something that should be fairly straightforward and typical but then goes horribly, wrong in a manner probably thought impossible. A mistake of such monumental proportions that it requires its own term to successfully point out the unfathomable shortcomings of an individual, group, or situation. Learn about several situations that can only be classified as Epic Fail.
