A Word from the Housemaster A short, but action packed, Spring Term. A highlight for me has to be the House Concert – not only was it the first time we have managed to get Mr Tully on stage with his juggling Tutor Group, but we saw some amazing acts, both from our talented boys but also those who are enthusiastic amateurs! Thank you for your support with helping us to raise £450 for JDRF, the diabetes charity. The channel swim went a long way to help raise these funds (21 miles to be precise), and I think I enjoyed starting off the swim at 6am with Santos and Harry D... I certainly enjoyed it when Zander came over to take over from me a little earlier than scheduled! Well done to all the Edwards Boys who made up the majority of the Les Mis cast... we are not a House which has always embraced drama…usually being represented by a small contingent led by Alex W and Joe G, so it was lovely seeing so much talent come out of the woodwork…there are lots of boys who have now got the taste for treading the boards so the future looks bright in this respect. I hope you enjoy reading about some of the activities and notable successes inside this issue and I would like to thank Henry Yannaghas for editing it for us. Mr Arbuthnot Edwards Housemaster

MUSIC

FOURTH FORM MUSIC WORKSHOP BY JAMES HANSON

The music day with Connor Ryan Adams was a day full of excitement and new experiences, that only happens very rarely in a school career. Mr Adams is a very talented musician and his colleagues are very good at what they do too; they managed to teach us many things to do with the music industry, such as: money, instruments, the road to fame, how to succeed in the industry, professional careers in music, music in university, song construction and performance. We played the much loved song Radioactive by Imagine Dragons by dividing ourselves into groups to focus on different elements of the song: some singing, some on the bass, some on the drums etc. This was a highlight to the day, because we all had great fun doing things that were out of our comfort zones and pushing our boundaries in music.

We also did our own variation of one of Connor’s songs This Is The Start. This was also great fun, because we got to put it together ourselves and experiment with new ways of ruining *cough* I mean, improving the song or making it sound more sophisticated. On a serious note, we were able to produce some good work and learnt some new skills in the process. The final part of the day was about the actual industry itself, putting aside all the performing and singing, and we learnt what to expect and do in the industry. On the whole, I think that the day was really interesting, surprisingly fun, and amusing. This day was for many a new experience or introduction to music. I believe that the day managed to build confidence and teach new skills, like conducting a band (which I found very fun.) I hope that others will agree on my thoughts and I wish the best of luck and plenty of thanks to the musicians that came in that day.

MUSIC

Edwards House Concert On the 10th of March, Centenary Hall was brought alive by the sound of the Edwards community performing at their House Concert. Boys of all ages took part, and the evening was a tribute to the House spirit and talent. The evening kicked off with a hilarious video and dance from the Upper Sixth that can only be described as 'brave'. Freddie Statham was our able compère and he managed the evening admirably. The evening saw a variety of acts, from the refined tones of Alexander Minns (L5) and Cameron Southgate-Ash's (U6) piano pieces to Jordan Asiama’s (L5) and Riley Carr's (L5) charismatic demonstration of magic. Two of the most wellreceived acts were future recording mega-star Joshua Chalfen (L6) (don't forget that I said this when you are famous and handing out the Ferraris please, Josh) performing a self-penned song, and Brandon Ng (L5), who got the building rocking with his drum tribute to David Bowie. Bruno Parrot Armisén (L5) impressed on guitar, and jazz duo Vincent Hromadnik (L5) and Henry Jackson-Wells (L5) also wowed the audience with their mature and upbeat performance. Next up was one of the highlights of this, or any other year; the ‘juggling maestros’ led on stage by Mr Tully.

Then, Harry Davies (U6), Will Davies (L6), Raul Rutnam (U6), Joseph Tyler (L6), and Jay Waller (U5) gave Vanilla Ice a run for his money by performing an enthusiastic rap, before the last enchanting performance from Warok Rai (F4), whose skill on the guitar captivated the audience. Paul Nagele (U5) revealed the painting he has produced as part of his live art performance, followed by the House Prefects (led by George Terry (U6) ) who presented Mr Arbuthnot and his family with gifts in recognition of this being his last House concert, and a lovely Easter egg to me for helping to organise the concert. The evening was then rounded off with a rousing House sing-along of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline. The House staff would like to thank all of the boys who took part, the parents who attended and especially the sound and lighting crew, co-ordinated by Cameron Fellows (L6), for such an enjoyable evening. MUSIC

Les Misérables

A sell-out production of the musical Les Misérables School Edition, performed entirely by students, was a theatrical triumph at Culford School last week. Culford’s drama and music department collaborated to produce this musical favourite, complete with a live orchestra, superb sets and lighting, intricate costumes, west-end worthy solos and tight ensemble singing. It was performed for three evenings in the school’s Centenary Hall to an audience of over 300 each night. The young performers, aged from just 14, displayed talent beyond their years, managing to convey the giddy highs and desperate lows that the characters’ lives fluctuate between in revolutionary France. They approached the canonical score with panache, their voices soaring individually and as one to produce a performance that many felt belied the fact it was a school production. An atmospheric set and rich costumes displayed simple versatility: from the underbelly of Montreuil-Sur-Mer to the barricades of Paris, the audience were transported with the effective use of props and staging.

Director of Drama, Maria Jackson said: “To tackle this epic was a huge undertaking. It is testament to our pupils that within six weeks they have pulled together a heartfelt musical, bursting with masterful performances, with an always energetic and dedicated approach. I am grateful to the cast, musicians, crew and audiences for making this such an enjoyable and fulfilling event!”

Mrs Haughey, Jocelyn Housemistress, wrote a review mentioning the following Edwardians: Joseph Gilkes (L6) as Jean Valjean captivated the audience with his presence and voice as soon as he stepped onto the stage. After his performance of Bring Him Home, there was barely a dry eye in the theatre. "

Juod Habib- Allah (L6) was convincing as Javert, portraying a complexity of character that was mesmerising. His renditions of Stars and Javert’s Suicide were both emotional and wonderfully delivered. Madame and Monsieur Thenardier (Anna Sutton (L6) and Edward Harris (U6)) both gave glorious and entertaining performances. They did not waste a second of stage time; each found everything there was to find in the story- and more!" Congratulations to all Edwardians who took part for what was by all accounts a fantastic production.
