JUST A BOY FROM SUFFOLK OR THE NEXT MAYWEATHER? Get to know the man , the myth , the legend : Jake Sumner of Cornwallis , and his life as a 6th Former and aspiring boxer .

C

ulford Sixth Former Jake Sumner, aged 17, travelled to Rotherham and competed in the finals of the England Boxing Youth Championship Finals, following on from his triumph as Eastern Counties Champion at 69kg. He gained a bronze medal at the England finals, seeding him in the top four for his weight in the country; an incredible achievement. Jake has been training at Sudbury Boxing Club since the age of 9 and dedicated three evenings a week to train for his fights against the top seven young boxers in the country. He puts his success down to having a good level of fitness and being fast on his feet.

In his quarter final bout, Sumner took on the Western Counties Champion Charlie Rickets. Sumner found his range from the start of the match and dominated all three rounds, picking up a unanimous verdict from the judges. The resulting win put Jake through to the semi-finals, where he lost graciously to Mo Harris Akbar, the reigning Welterweight Commonwealth Youth Games Champion and member of the England Boxing Youth squad.

Alongside his boxing, Jake is currently studying for his A Levels at Culford in Business Studies, PE and Psychology, and he has an offer to study Business Management at Leeds Beckett University from September 2017.

"I’m nervous about the fights,” said Jake, “But the feeling you get if you win is incredible, and worth all the hard work.”

“I want to take a gap year after I leave school to focus on my boxing and gain some work experience, and then I am looking forward to going to Leeds. There is also an excellent boxing club there!”

I don’t stop when I’m tired. I only stop when I’m done..." Marilyn Monroe

THREE TIPS TO BECOMING AN ATHLETE LIKE REYNOLDS Eating Big According to Gavin Reynolds, eating beans on toast followed by steak & mash with 2 pints of lager and a glass of merlot is the ideal diet prerunning 17.5 miles. (Other studies have shown otherwise...)

A consistent running schedule “I go for a 5 mile run every day apart from Wednesday, that's my rest day. Also, on Sunday I go for a 9 to 10 mile run and on Thursday I do an even longer run.”

BECOMING A MARATHON MONSTER By Jono Le Grice, L6

There is one particular Gentleman, from the House of Cornwallis, that has brought himself a bit of attention these past couple of months. I think he would be best described as a father figure to the rest of the boys and some may even know him for what may be lacking on-top of his head. Yes, you may have guessed it by now, I am talking about our very own Housemaster Mr. Gavin Reynolds. Recently he has officially signed up to compete in the London Marathon in support for the charity “Children with Cancer UK”. The big Gav himself has supplied us with a few essential tips in preparation for such a big occasion, including his diet plan; he said: “The other day I had myself a juicy steak & mash, alongside this; two pints of lager, with a glass of merlot. Oh, and before this I had beans on toast.” He then continued on to say: “That day I ran a 17.5m (yes miles not metres!) in a time of 2 hours 15 minutes”. So I think it’s safe to say if you want to prepare yourself for a 26 mile run your stomach needs to be able to devour essential nutrients in a large proportion. When talking to Gavin Reynolds, he explained his physical training plan throughout the next 5 weeks until the big run. “I go for a 5 mile run every day apart from Wednesday, that's my rest day. Also, on Sunday I go for a 9 to 10 mile run and on Thursday I do an even longer run.” I don’t know about you but I think if I tried to execute a regime like that I would probably end up on a hospital bed! Reynolds explained how he is inspired to do what he is doing by the amount of support he has had from his blood family and the rest of his non-biological family known as Culford School. Raising an enormous amount of dough through donations, Reynolds will be putting a huge contribution towards the cause of Children with Cancer. On behalf of Cornwallis House I think its safe to say we are all very proud to be led by a man with drive, passion and who does what he believes in, and we look forward to hearing all about how his efforts have paid off. If you find yourself down in London for the marathon keep your eyes open for a middle aged man wearing a superhero costume; I’m sure he won’t be too hard to spot!

BIG DREAMS START YOUNG

(From left to right) Maria Andrews (U6), Lucy Holder (U6), Ella Dowling (L6) and Alex Blumfield (U6).

We are delighted to announce that Lucy Holder U6 (second from the left) and Alex Blumfield U6 (far right) have been selected to represent England U18 Hockey as part of the 2016 National Age Group Training Squads (NAGS). This is a fantastic achievement for the talented pair and a well deserved reward for their hard work and determination in a busy academic year. They have been working extremely hard at school, club and regional sessions on their technical skills, mental attributes and strength and conditioning in order to gain selection in a very competitive age group.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. Anon

Alex and Lucy, who are both Culford Sports scholars and part of the Culford Hockey programme, will now be invited to attend training days and camps totalling up to 35 days over the next few months and have the opportunity to feature in junior international matches in the Summer against opposition such as Scotland, Ulster, Holland, Germany and Belgium. Head of Hockey, Mr. Blake Burrows, said: "We are very proud of Alex and Lucy’s achievement. This is the next step on their journey and we are looking forward to working with them both on their specific targets to ensure they play their best hockey over the next few months. It is an exciting time for them and for Culford hockey."

THE RISE OF A

POLITICAL STAR By Jono Le Grice, L6 Photograph courtesy of Cambridge News One Gentleman has recently involved himself in the political world. Lower Sixth pupil Luigi Murton has risen up the ranks in UKIP. Luigi joined UKIP in December 2013 and has since appeared on TV and in the media in multiple countries. Luigi’s background is most interesting and many people were originally confused as to why he supported UKIP. Luigi was born in Romania in 1999 and was adopted 6 months later. Luigi wanted to demonstrate to people that UKIP is not a “racist” party. Luigi said he was “pro-migration but antimass immigration”. He believes that “by controlling migration, we can ensure that the best and brightest can come and contribute to the UK.” Luigi believes that hard-working immigrants, like himself, are being discriminated because of a tiny minority of immigrants that “take advantage” of the UK’s generosity. He stated “There are Romanian doctors and lawyers out there who are perceived to be lazy and unskilled because of the small number of migrants that damage my countrymen’s reputation.” He believes, “If we control our borders, we can ensure that only the best and brightest come to the UK and stop discrimination. It is not about what country you are from, it is about what you can contribute to the UK.” In October 2015, Luigi was officially elected as the “Young Independence Cambridgeshire County Chairman”. Young Independence is UKIP’s youth wing which has over 4,000 members across the UK. YI members are members of UKIP under the age of 30.

In February 2016, Luigi Murton attended the UKIP Eastern Regional Rally in Peterborough which attracted over 250 members. Luigi Murton gave a passionate speech in front of the audience which included some famous figures such as Steven Woolfe MEP and Suzanne Evans MEP. During the rally, he was interviewed by the Belgian National TV network “le une”, the equivalent to BBC 1. His interview aired on Belgium TV during prime-time at 7:30pm which then kick-started his media journey. On February 24th, the Cambridge News published their article on Luigi and it made the front page. Luigi believed this article was a major success and the journalist, Jon Vale, commented after the interview saying “watch this one, he is a rising star in the political world”. The news article was also published in multiple Romanian national newspapers. In March, due to Luigi’s staggering progress in UKIP, the YI national council recommended he stand for the position of YI Eastern Regional Chairman. Luigi stood for the role and successfully defeated the other candidates. Luigi is now responsible for over 500 members that are spread across the 6 counties in the Eastern region. Luigi is not afraid to express his opinions and is confident in what he stands for. Cornwallis have a talented individual who is predicted to rise in the political world. We may be seeing him a lot more on the TV or in the papers in the coming months!

ACADEMIC

EXPERIENCES

AN OFFERING FROM CAMBRIDGE AN EXPERIENCE WRITTEN BY HARRY CONNOR, U6 HEAD OF CORNWALLIS

I applied to King’s College Cambridge, to take a course entitled “Human, Social and Political Sciences”. I chose the course because it offered a broad and interesting range of subjects to study, and the college mainly because it was architecturally stunning, and the location was fantastic. Oxbridge applications have to be in a lot earlier than any other university applications. Now, I had had varying feelings about applying- “I won’t get in”, “It takes up one of my precious 5 choices” and “I have to actually sort my life out soon” were some of the thoughts crossing my mind. However, I got my act together and sent my UCAS application off in October. To my surprise, I was asked to come for an interview in early December. That was the point where I had to start reading as much material as I could, whenever I could. Countless books on the Middle East, International Relations and other current affairs stories were hastily absorbed in an attempt to give myself the best possible chance in performing well in the interview. At this moment in time, I had already received a couple of offers from other universities, so my general feeling was that I might as well give it a go. If I got in, well, congrats to me... However, if I didn’t, I still had plenty of other options. The day of the interview consisted of a 1 hour written essay test, with a range of questions based around the subjects that made up the course (politics, international relations, anthropology and sociology to name a few).

I chose to answer a question on open borders in Europe, something I had been reading about (helpfully). Once this was done, I had to force down a burger with dad, as my nerves began to get the better of me. After a strong double espresso I headed to the interview room. The interview itself was basically just an academic discussion with two of the college professors. It was actually quite enjoyable, but particularly challenging. An example of a question they asked me was; “What comes first; democracy then prosperity, or prosperity then democracy?” I had been told that the key is to keep calm and ask for a minute or two to think of a sensible answer. I knew that they weren’t there to see how much you know about politics (or whatever subject you apply for), but to see how you adapt to new and challenging ideas. I just tried my best and really dug deep when answering their questions. After all of that, my feelings towards actually getting a place had grown dramatically- I felt I had put so much effort into this that I knew I would be disappointing if I didn’t get a place. To my amazement, I opened that email on the 19th January and had been offered a place. Apart from the looming prospect of having to actually get the A* and 2 A’s that are required for acceptance, I was ecstatic and cannot thank everyone who pushed me to apply enough. It’s just the small question of actually doing the A Level exams now…..
