Busy First Term for New Library The start of the new school year at Culford began in spectacular fashion, with the opening of the new £2.2 million landmark library building. Pupils, alumni, teachers and staff gathered outside the completed building to watch Old Culfordian and generous benefactor to the project, Professor Harry Watson, cut the ribbon and declare the library officially open. Headmaster Julian Johnson-Munday was keen to promote the library as more than just a storage space for literature. He stressed that, “This stunning new building offers an inviting, light and open space for our pupils to go and study and a place where they can fulfil their potential as independent learners.”

The Sixth Form have made great use of their exclusive mezzanine floor with coffee facilities, quiet study areas, and wi-fi. The 80-seat lecture theatre has hosted several talks including one by Professor Simon Horobin, Oxford fellow and guest speaker for the Scholars’ Programme. The foyer has been the location of many events including National Poetry Day Open Mic and recent Prep School parents’ evenings. As a building that is located centrally between the pastoral and academic hubs of the school, the library is also firmly establishing itself at the heart of Culford’s academic life.

It looks like the Headmaster’s expectations have been met, as the library has thrived in its opening term. The statistics speak for themselves; according to School Librarian Lesley Martin, in the half term running up to Christmas, the library had 5,000 visits and loans are at an all-time high.

Sixth Form: Freshers’ Week and New Video Lower Sixth embarked on a residential trip to North Norfolk at the start of the academic year, to welcome and integrate the new students. Arriving in Cromer for the weekend, they participated in various challenges which tested leadership and team-work skills, as varied as falling from an adrenaline-inducing 50 foot jump onto a huge air cushion, to indulging in some traditional fish and chips. After returning to Culford, some members of the Sixth Form collaborated with a professional film company to create a Sixth Form Selfie Video, which can be viewed on: www.youtube.com/culfordschool

Tell us about the dog in your photo. Josh is our rescue dog. We adopted him from the Dog’s Trust about 8 years ago, and he is lovely, fluffy and very spoiled. He likes to bark, just on principle, chase squirrels, eat cottage cheese and play with squeaky toys. If you could go anywhere in the world for a holiday, where would you go? I want so much to go dog-sledding in Iceland!

Launch of International Study Programme Culford’s one year International Study Programme students have now completed their first term at Culford. They have settled into the boarding Houses well, making lots of friends and getting to grips with English as a Second Language, alongside their other IGCSEs which they study for as a group, under the direction of Nick Murray, Head of the International Study Programme. As well as participating in mainstream Culford activities such as CCF and table tennis, the group take part in their own events, such as a trip to Cambridge, a dinner at the Headmaster’s house, and even a conkers tournament! With six of the pupils coming from China, they are particularly looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year in February.

Meditation Class and Walking Wednesdays Parents, friends and staff at Culford have joined together this term to take part in two new activities. Amanda Flood, an Old Culfordian, runs a Meditation Class in the Red Room every Tuesday in term time at 8.30am for 30 minutes which has proved very popular with parents. Refreshments are provided and each class costs £3 on a drop-in basis.

Pla y s & Prod uct ions Senior: L’Atelier Culford drama department’s latest production of Jean-Claude Grumberg’s L’Atelier was a sell-out success, displaying the students’ knack for naturalistic performance with excellent comic timing. It was performed for three nights in the Studio Theatre to an audience of over 100 each night. The young performers displayed a mature and sympathetic understanding of the diverse characters struggling to live day to day in post-war France, working in a Parisian tailor’s studio, and coming to terms with emerging and often unpalatable truths. Director of Drama, Maria Jackson said, “This was a challenging yet subtle piece for our students to perform. I was impressed with their ability to reflect the sensitivities of the play - the characters were compelling and their enjoyment of the performances shone through.”

Pre-Prep & Nursery: The Sleepy Shepherd Nativity Pre-Prep gave yet another brilliant performance in their annual Nativity. The story was narrated by Reception pupils George Brown, Harry Tomalin and Kitty Cooper. They introduced us to the sleepy shepherd played by Oliver Loveday. Emily Brown was the beautiful angel showing the sleepy shepherd the way to Bethlehem with the help of her little angels from Nursery; Iris Woolley, Sienna Wadsworth and Freya Reed.

The stable now began to fill up for Mary and Joseph, played by Reception pupils Bunny Crompton-Battersby and Jack Young. The three wise men, played by Reception’s Max Carter, Jaydn Dovaston and Sam Cobbold, travelled on their Nursery pupil camels (Frederick Louis, Harriet Clarke and Luka Zukaite) all the way to Bethlehem, just in time to see the arrival of baby Jesus.

Arts

Senior & Prep: Local Artist Presents New Book to Culford

Local artist Andy Hibberd visited Culford School to showcase some of his newest pieces in the Foundation Art Gallery, and to present a copy of his new book, Letter Carving, to the School. He talked to the pupils about the creative process, and how every line on a painting, or chisel on a sculpture, is the mark of a deliberate action. Andy also has a personal connection to Culford; his father is an Old Culfordian who attended the School from 1941-47.

Senior: Pinhole Camera Workshop

This term students from Fourth Form to Upper Sixth took part in a pinhole camera workshop. Katie Noorlander, Art Technician, showed the pupils an example of a homemade pinhole camera, the same kind that they would be making later, made out of old film canisters, gaffer tape and metal from a drinks can! Once the students had made their cameras, they took photographs around the school and estate, and were instructed to develop their films the ‘old-fashioned’ way to see the results.

Senior: Musicians Impress at Autumn Concert The Music Department’s Autumn Concert programme began with the Wind Band, which consisted of 14 pupils playing Goldsmith and Gershwin. Next, the Chamber Orchestra took over, playing ‘Jupiter’ from The Planets by Holst. Smaller groups also took to the stage, including: The String Ensemble, Senior Clarinet Ensemble, String Trio, Guitar Trio and Flute Trio. These groups were followed by The Jazz Band, playing the funky Noodlin’ by Iles. Talented soloists also had a turn in the limelight, with Suffolk Youth Orchestra Leader Hannah Littlechild (U6) on the violin, Catherine Howells (F4) on the cello and Katie Collier (U6) on the flute. Tenor Christopher Howells (U6) sang two pieces by Handel and Cameron Southgate-Ash (U6) followed on the piano. The Fitz Singers sang Counting Stars by One Republic, Joshua Chalfen (L6) performed Ed Sheeran’s Small Bump with his guitar, and Warok Rai (F4) impressed with a solo acoustic guitar piece.

Prep: Strings Festival More than 50 pupils from Culford, South Lee, Barnardiston Hall, Moreton Hall and Town Close Prep schools gathered together at Culford for a day of music at the school’s Strings Festival, hosted by celebrated violinist Steve Bingham. The day started with Steve’s fast paced demonstration on his electric violin of the effects he could achieve with his music software. The rest of the day consisted of full orchestra practices mentored and conducted by Steve, and sectionals where pupils would split into particular instrumental groups to prepare for the ensemble concert at the end of the day. Parents were invited to see the culmination of a full day’s music practice at the wonderful tea-time concert.

The brilliant Fourth Form Choir rounded off the evening with all members of the school year singing ‘Shout’ from the musical Sister Act. The next event is the Music Scholars’ Concert on 11 February. For more information, please contact music@culford.co.uk

Pre-Prep: Samba Drumming and Dancing The Pre-Prep were introduced to the different sounds of the Brazilian carnival and were given the opportunity to try out the different Samba drums and tamborims. They danced to the beat and created a lively party atmosphere.

4 Culford CulfordConnections Connections

The children then learnt how to dance the Samba. The children were taught by Mr. Adrian Mole from the Ballroom Experience Company and enjoyed demonstrating their new skills to their parents in an assembly at the end of the day.

Prep: The Witches Culford Prep School pupils brought the fun of Roald Dahl’s The Witches to life with their spellbinding performance last term. An audience of parents, friends and teachers gathered in Cadogan Hall to watch the play come to life. The children took on roles as both cast and crew to pull together a visually challenging play, using puppetry, pyrotechnics and brilliant soundtracks to entertain their guests and present them with all the magic and madness of the original. Mr Calvert, Head of Drama and Director of The Witches, was delighted with the performances, which were very technical for both cast and crew. He said, “The backstage team had to deliver a number of special effects which involved turning two of the cast into mice!.”

Pre-Prep & Nursery: Dance Show The children at Pre-Prep and Nursery once again captivated their audience at the annual Dance Show. The pupils are taught ballet, modern and tap dance throughout the year by Ms Mandie Rogers, and the show gives the children the opportunity to show off their dance skills. The Nursery children went on a teddy bear’s picnic, before the Reception children took to the stage, dancing to songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In PP1, the children began with modern dance and performed various routines; the boys re-enacted a scene from the musical Oliver! and definitely created a stir ‘picking a pocket or two’. PP2 closed the show with a focus on tap dancing.

Academic

Prep: Languages Day

Prep & Senior: Books, Bodyguards and Samurai Culford Prep and Senior pupils were wowed by an author visit when Chris Bradford, best-selling children’s author of the ‘Young Samurai’ and ‘Bodyguard’ series, treated them to a live samurai sword demonstration and interactive bodyguard training mission. Pupils from Lower Second to Fourth Form watched Chris read and act out parts from his books.

Prep School pupils and teachers took part in European Languages Day. Everyone wore red, white and blue non-uniform and pupils and teachers alike were encouraged to speak in a second language throughout the day. The highlight was probably lunch time, where a wide range of foreign food was served by members of the Prefect body dressed as French waiters and waitresses! Both French and Spanish food was enjoyed, including: snails, frogs’ legs, crêpes and paella.

At the end of his visit, Chris revealed the Target and front cover to his new book Target, gave a book signing for the pupils.

Senior: Language and… Scholars’ Programme The Scholars’ Programme is half way through its seminar timetable, having piqued students’ interests in topics on the theme for 2015-16 ‘Language and…’

Professor Simon Horobin from Oxford University

Charities

Senior: Malawi 2015

Culford Sixth Formers visited Malawi for the seventh year in summer 2015 to complete life-changing charity work. During the two week trip, Culford’s team of 11 pupils and four members of staff worked to support and educate children at local schools and orphanages. The team began their work at Fisherman’s Rest in the Lower Shire Valley. Here they delivered topical lessons to pupils at Kachere School as part of projects kindly sponsored by The Rosetta Trust. The lessons focused on aspects relating to human rights, sexual reproduction, STIs, and gender stereotyping. Andy Deane, Head of Languages at Culford Senior School, was incredibly impressed by the way the Sixth Formers delivered their lessons. He said “It was to the Culford pupils’ immense credit that they were able to present the facts in an interesting and compassionate way.” The team also visited the Good News Orphanage, a regular stop for Culford. The pupils worked on updating the library and garden along with distributing much needed blankets, clothes and games to the 120 orphans and volunteers. The trip ended with a river safari and game drive and a final night on the banks of Lake Malawi. The pupils will now be supporting those participating in the 2016 trip this summer.

Senior: Charity Restaurant

Prep: Pupils Raise over £700 for Alzheimer’s Society

In November 2015, pupils held their annual charity restaurant. The students served 90 guests in all and raised £1,250.

Four Prep pupils have raised over £700 so far in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

The net profit will go to the Kailash Bodhi School in Northern India. Culford have supported this school since an expedition party from Culford visited the Himalayas in 1998, and saw the difficult conditions in which the children lived. Previously, Culford has given considerable donations towards the KBS campaign for a school minibus and the pupils hope that the money raised by the restaurant will go some way towards helping the school again.

The fundraising began with a spooky themed non-uniform day on Friday 13 November. Pupils, Lucy Allum (L2) and sisters Chloe (U1), Josie (L2) and Louisa Gooderham (L3), created and manned a themed cake sale, which took place during break time, selling creepy creations to their peers and teachers. With a little help from parents, the girls also planned fun fair stalls to be set up after school, offering fellow pupils the chance to win prizes or enter a raffle. Their games included lucky dip, guess the number of sweets in the jar, name the cat and the spooky straw draw.

Pre-Prep: Harvest Festival Food Bank Donation The children in PP2 visited the Storehouse food bank run by the West Suffolk Vineyard Church (WSVC) in Bury St Edmunds for Harvest Festival. The Storehouse regularly provides bags of groceries to those in need, each containing a wide selection of items including dried and tinned foods, long life products and toiletries. The children had the opportunity to see how the project is run, where donations are stored and how they are distributed, also donating items themselves.

Trips and Activities Senior: IGCSE Geography Trip to Yorkshire In October 2015, Upper Fifth IGCSE geography students set off to North Yorkshire for their weekend fieldtrip. They stayed in a small village called Kirby Grindalythe, heading to Flamborough Head, Hornsea, Mappleton and Malton over the duration of the trip, enjoying the blue skies and bright sunshine. They studied coastal landforms, erosional processes, fieldwork, beach profiles, sediment size, coastal management strategies and land use transects.

Pre-Prep: Lackford Lakes At the beginning of term, PP2 had their first trip of the year to Lackford Lakes. The children had a brilliant day comparing habitats, using maps and learning how a key can help to interpret map symbols. They had to use their map to help them navigate around a meadow area in order to find specific features.

Prep: Kentwell Hall Lower Second stepped back in time on their Tudor Day trip to Kentwell Hall. The pupils dressed in traditional Tudor dress and exchanged their modern money for Tudor coinage. They were then welcomed into the hall, heralded by musicians, and taken on a tour of the different parts of the house, meeting kitchen staff, bakers, dairymaids, writers, lords, ladies, maids, archers, woodcarvers and an alchemist reenacting Tudor practices and customs.

Pond dipping proved popular with an amazing array of creatures being discovered. The children were also fortunate to see a kingfisher and were provided with a wonderful flying display by a barn owl.

Culford pupil Laurie Cruickshank (U3) has finished 5th in the Quorn Family Tennis Cup National Finals. Sixteen doubles pairs took part in the event which happened on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October at the National Tennis Centre. Laurie and her Uncle Scott were treated to a tour of the stadium followed by a doubles clinic led by tennis professional, Greg Rusedski. Following this, the pair began the tournament and went on to win their group. However, in the quarter finals, Laurie and Scott lost their first match to a strong father and son team but went forward to win the next two matches, placing them 5th overall.
