Spring 2018

The Quarterly Magazine of CTC Wessex Cycling in & around Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch This issue contains details of a new venture. Our chairman is leading a few volunteers in providing a ride open to all titled Reef Rides as they will be starting from the Reef Centre in Colehill. Also included is the resurrection under Bob Chittenden of the Picnic in Damerham again open to all. You are asked to publicise these events. The flyer for the Reef Rides can be obtained from Paul and when they are printed the flyer for the picnic will be distributed by Bob. I have reprinted his letter regarding the Dawdlers’ Christmas Lunch and the proposed Picnic as I think he is the only member from whom I have received a letter addressed to the editor. Organising these events and some correspondence by a ride Group Organiser highlights the need for volunteers. This is a constant message from our chairman. If the CTC Wessex Cycling is to continue providing the number of weekly rides, they are greatly needed. As I write this the snow has just melted but the snow and especially the ice has interfered with many members’ cycling. Some have used our Facebook Page to keep everyone up to date. The Facebook page can be a grand tool for passing on such information but it does require our members to “Like” the page CTC Wessex Cycling. Paul Turner kindly posts the week’s schedule of rides. I have included in this issue a post from Shawn Shaw which both Terry and myself believe is unique in that Shawn cancelled a ride. As an inspiration for riding in the spring the cover photograph is of Aimée Hall enjoying a French tour in an earlier April. The back cover is of the riders who rode on behalf of Montacute School reaching Paris, (there will be a write up in the next issue). Lastly I repeat a message from the last issue, would you all please respect members of the public and especially their personal space remembering that you are often in Lycra.

Right to Ride Report - March 2018

By Paul M. Turner

Bournemouth Design work is proceeding on the Riverside Avenue Toucan crossing. The brief has now been extended to consider cycling links to the east and west, as suggested by Bournemouth Forum members. We are looking to commence construction around May 2018 with completion 2-3 months after. Work to complete the Ringwood Road (Longham) shared footway schemes should re-commence around February 2018 for completion around April. Speed surveys show that traffic speeds have significantly reduced since the construction of the Poole Lane parallel crossing. The Belle Vue Road parallel crossing is now also open with no reported issues. 17-18 Programme. Design is complete on a number of the schemes in the 2017-18 LTP programme. Several schemes have been implemented, although some signing and lining is still to be done. Complete or under construction: Additional cycle parking in Winton outside Lidl and Sainsbury's.The cut-through from Warren Edge Road to Ferry Road. The cut-through from Warren Edge Close to Southbourne Coast Road. The Kings Park gate by-pass adjacent to the min roundabout @ Petersfield Road/Clarence Park Road is complete. The cut-through from Chine Crescent Road to Durley Chine Road is under construction. Design work is proceeding on the Riverside Avenue Toucan crossing. The brief has now been extended to consider cycling links to the east and west, as suggested by forum members. We are looking to commence construction around May 2018 with completion 2-3 months after. Work to complete the Ringwood Road (Longham) shared footway schemes should recommence around February 2018 for completion around April. Speed surveys show that traffic speeds have significantly reduced since the construction of the Poole Lane parallel crossing. The Belle Vue Road parallel crossing is now also open with no reported issues. Design Stage: The connection between the Ringwood Road Toucan and High Howe Lane has been designed. Contraflows in Cardigan Road, Gladstone Road & Gladstone Road East have been designed. The exemption to the turning ban from Percy Road into Michelgrove Road has been designed. The cut-through from Alumhurst Road to Seamoor Road to allow cycles to turn right into Seamoor Road, using gap provided for emergency vehicles, is designed. Design work continues on the replacement of chicanes by speed cushion on Iford Lane, to address issues raised by the forum. This has proved slightly more complicated than we anticipated. The cutthrough between Jewell Road & Castle Lane East is in design. We have been looking at replacing staggered barriers with bollards in a number of locations to provide access for cycles, pushchairs and mobility scooters. This has proved rather a complex process, but we are hoping to be able to progress these soon. Other links we are investigating include: Two gaps in cycle facilities on the Castle Lane West corridor will be looked at this year as part of a longer term project to address the gaps in the cycle network along Castle Lane West. In connection with this, we are tidying up the shared cycle/pedestrian facilities by Castlepoint. The link from Norwich Avenue to the Triangle has been temporarily postponed. Signing the Lansdowne to Wessex Fields route has been temporarily postponed.

Poole Due to the success of securing an extra £3M for highway maintenance from the DfT’s “Challenge Funding” this year’s capital programme for cycling has been reviewed and will now complement the resurfacing schemes: Longfleet Road – The George Roundabout to the Shah Junction – now complete. Sandbanks Road – Civic Centre Gyratory to the railway bridge – now complete. Wimborne Road – The George Roundabout to Fleetsbridge. Ringwood Road – Sea View Road to Old Wareham Road Roundabout. Queen Anne Drive / Magna Road – Gravel Hill to Borough boundary– now complete. Alder Road – Ashley Road to Wallisdown Road – major headaches! Blandford Road – Port to Borough boundary – phase 1 complete, phase 2 in early 2018! 2018-19 – Ringwood Road. Some signs for NCN 25/West Cliff Road (joint with Bournemouth). Holes Bay resurfacing and realignment. Alder Hill Quiet Way especially between Recreation Road and Sheringham Road! LCWIP – Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan This joint Poole / Bournemouth project was successful in securing technical support from the DfT. There will be opportunities for local groups to get involved in the process and Officers will let the Forum know more once the inception meeting has been completed with the DfT’s consultants. Check-out Fizz Bikes – Dr Felicity Rice - http://fizzbikes.co.uk/ It is a local enterprise based around Poole & Bournemouth. Also she has Facebook Page https:www.facebook.com>fizzbikes! It is lovely for the children! Right to Ride Representative CTC Wessex Cycling

CTC Wessex Cycling Collective Christmas Lunch

Paul

By Paul Rush

Christmas is traditionally the time of year for families to get together. It was with this thought in mind that the committee felt it would make our club more embracing by encouraging an annual lunch for all members across the various groups. The lunch would be called the CTC Wessex Cycling Christmas Lunch and to aid participation this lunch will be partially subsidised. This initiative is in no way intended to usurp or in any way replace the various group lunches which are organized independently. The various groups Rouleurs, Inters, Potterers, etc;etc: all operate autonomously to a large degree though out the year, it would therefore be a pleasant occasion to all meet up at the end of the year and share a few stories and experiences. It will also be the most appropriate occasion for the annual awards of our trophies.

There are no strict rules for the type, location, date or time of the luncheon which is under the guidance of the event organizers. We are confident and hope the event will naturally develop in the best interests of all members. If any member wishes to enhance the event by an after-dinner recital or some such entertainment, then we should be pleased to hear from you. The Committee wish you all an exciting 2018 on the bike. It is still encouraging after all the self-destructive news one was exposed to during 2017 that every time I see a person riding a bicycle I no longer despair at the human-race. It is after all said and done, what we all love to do!

The Reef Rides 17th June The Reef Rides – Not to be missed! The Reef Rides take place on the 17th June. Both rides start and finish at the Reef Youth and Community Centre, Colehill Lane, Colehill, Wimborne Dorset BH21 7AB.

There are two rides to choose from the The Half Reef approximately 30miles or the The Reef approximately 60mls. Both rides are predominantly on quiet country lanes heading out towards Cranborne and Tisbury respectively. A route sheet will be provided for your chosen ride and Garmin downloads for both rides are available on WWW.WESSEXCTC.ORG. There will be no organised refreshment stops or support en-route therefore participants must be self-sufficient in all respects after leaving the centre. The rides do however pass through country villages where refreshments may be available. Entrants can sign in from 08.30hrs and commence at any time. The event will close at 18.00hrs. Refreshments will be available at the start and finish, all entrants signed in and out on completion will receive a free tea or coffee. The Reef Rides are free to enter; non CTC members are most welcome. The Half Reef is a pleasant ride, suitable for novices. You may wish to bring a friend and enjoy a good day on the bike. Velo Domestique is closed until 21st March for some structural repairs. They transferred to 176180 Seabourne Road (the top end of Southbourne Grove) in January 2016. Velo Domestique is not just a café, not just a bike shop, it’s a hub for cyclists in the greater Bournemouth conurbation. Stop by for some delicious coffee, food or company. Swanage Ferry Fare Increase By Paul Turner & others Extract from Swanage and Wareham Voice. An application has been submitted to the Department for Transport by ferry operators Bournemouth- Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company to increase tolls up to 2021. If approved, the charge foot passengers would increase to £2, with car tolls increasing to £6, and HGV and buses coaches costing £12. Marginal increases are set to come into force in April, bringing the previous toll schedule to a conclusion. "We are also concerned that more people will be forced to use the already busy A351 if this proposed increase is implemented." The ferry company said the rise in tolls is necessary to meet increased costs of running the service and overall users are understanding. In addition, they said eventually the ferry will need to be replaced, which will cost a significant sum of money. The notice advertising the increase says anyone having a "substantial interest" may object to the application up until April 3 by giving notice via email to nationalcasework@dft.gsi.gov.uk or in writing to the Secretary of State at the Department for Transport. Terry’s Informal Saturday Ride to Burley This ride happens every Saturday and is completely informal. There is no leader and no back up, but generally an experienced cyclist will be somewhere around. The route is designed for beginners but joined in by all abilities. Start 09:00 at Waitrose Supermarket, Christchurch every Saturday and a few minutes later passing The Oak Inn, Martins Hill Lane Burton. Or make your own way to the Old Farmhouse Tea Rooms, Burley for 10:00

Join the London to Paris Cycle Team Cycle for four days Fund four months of Lung Cancer Research Have you got what it takes to join our team and cycle for four days to fund four months of lung cancer research? We need a team of 20 people to pedal almost 300 miles to cover the cost of one of our research projects in to earlier detection for four months. Starting in London, the 299 mile, 4 day route takes you through glorious English countryside, to the ferry from Dover to Calais. Once ‘French side’, you will push on cycling along quiet French country lanes, through traditional market towns with views of the rolling green hills of northern France. The tarmac in France is superb, and cycling is the nation’s favourite sports so don’t be surprised when the locals make way for you and cheer you on! Whether you are a regular cyclist or simply enjoy a Sunday afternoon meander, as long as you are willing to train, then this event is perfect for you. All levels of ability are catered for, fantastic support crews will look after you and you don’t have to worry about your luggage, water or food – It’s all taken care of – leaving you to just cycle and focus on your goal of reaching Paris. The pièce de résistance of this cycle will be the spectacular view of the 324 metre Eiffel Tower, which marks the finish line. The days in the saddle are long, but upon reaching Paris and celebrating our achievements in this fabulous capital, the saddle soreness soon wears off!

There are four available dates to participate in the London to Paris cycle in 2018. You can even register for the Tour De France Special on the 25th 29th July where you will get the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the final stage action from the world famous Champs-Elysees. To register directly, please click on the date of the event you are interested in: 6th-10th June 2018 25th-29th July 2018 (Tour de France Route) 15th-19th August 2018 12th-16th September 2018 https://booking.globaladventurechallenges.com /?id=247&d=L2P15082018&r=1&charity=1015 Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation will provide support and help with both your training and fundraising and a bespoke cycling jersey will be provided when you register. Here at Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, we know that taking on an overseas challenge can be costly and a huge commitment. If you feel that you are unable to afford the registration fee in one payment, Global Adventure Challenges now offers you the option to pay in two instalments over two months. Simply enter the code INSTALL2 at the payment page and your registration fee will be halved and the second instalment will be taken from your account after your next pay day.

Committee Meeting Minutes November 2017 1. PRESENT:-

Paul Rush (Chairman); Julian James (Vice-Chairman); Jim McDonald; Paul Turner (Right to Ride Representative); Mike Walsh (Secretary/Treasurer) and Alan Baker (Minute Secretary).

2. APOLOGIES:- Bob Chittenden; Bob Courtney; Steve Gray (Cycle Training Coordinator); Keith Matthews (Welfare Officer / Registrar / Membership Secretary / Website Master).

3. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING:- Minutes of the Meeting held on 16 August 2017 were APPROVED. 4. MATTERS ARISING:- There were no matters arising from the Minutes of the last Meeting not covered elsewhere on the Agenda. 5. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT:- Paul Rush reported that only 23 members attended the recent AGM, a disappointing turnout given the publicity afforded the event. 6. SECRETARY’S REPORT:- Mike Walsh reported that the three sponsored Group members who had recently undertaken Bikeability Instructor Training had all passed, subject to successfully conducting an instruction session in the presence of the Lifecycle Instructor. Alan Baker reported that Keith Matthews had posted the revised Constitution, approved at the recent AGM, on the Group website. He also reported that, at the AGM, Group trophies had been awarded in line with the decisions reached at the last Committee Meeting, as follows: Sartain Cup to Jim McDonald for his continuing meritorious work as Ride Coordinator for the Potterers and Dawdlers Ride Groups Riders’ Cup to Graham Dore for successfully completing the London – Edinburgh – London Audax 2017 (in absentia) Tourist Shield to David Smethurst for successfully completing the London – Edinburgh – London Audax 2017 (in absentia) Ron Cook Rosebowl to John Jackson for his hard work as organiser of The Gridiron event over seven consecutive years Graham Dore and David Smethurst will be presented with their awards at the forthcoming Christmas Lunch on Thursday 14 December. 7. TREASURER’S REPORT:- Mike Walsh reported that the Group’s finances remained healthy, with sufficient funds available to meet foreseeable requirements, which included a payment of £1500 for the training of the three Bikeability Instructors referred to above. He recommended that the Committee agree to fund the training of up to a further six Instructors, four of whom had already been identified. The Committee AGREED nem con to Mike’s recommendation.

Mike Walsh also reported that the two editions of the first Basic Bicycle Maintenance Course had taken place successfully under the tutelage of Steve Coombes, and Mike recommended that the Committee agree to underwrite the running of further courses, again with Steve Coombes as tutor. Future courses were likely to be held with smaller groups (a maximum of six participants) which would allow each course to be completed in one session. Alternative venues and a programme of courses at two-week intervals throughout the winter were being explored. Underwriting the cost of the enterprise would allow the programme to proceed without a full complement of participants and, if necessary, to pay for venue hire. The Committee AGREED nem con to underwrite the running of the programme for five months at a maximum cost of £1200. Mike also reported that Steve Coombes is seeking work running Bicycle Maintenance courses with Christchurch Bicycle Club and with Dorset Cycling Network. In both cases he is promoting himself as a tutor with CTC Wessex Cycling. 8. RIGHT TO RIDE REPORT:- Paul Turner reported on Right To Ride issues in the area. His report will be published in the Newsletter. 9. NEW RIDE LEADERS:- Mike Walsh reported that he and Keith Matthews had merged their lists of Ride Leaders and other Group volunteers, and the up-to-date list would be submitted to National Office by 1st December as part of the Group’s Annual Return. Mike added that Group volunteers who were not CTC members could be included so as to provide liability insurance for their actions when on Group business; and that volunteers’ names (including of new Ride Leaders) could be added retrospectively. 10. CHRISTMAS LUNCH:- Alan Baker reported that arrangements for the Christmas Lunch to be held on Thursday 14 December were in place, with bookings priced at £20. Dave Langley has asked the Committee to consider subsidising the price once again. After some discussion it was AGREED nem con not to provide a subsidy in order to reduce the price of this year’s Lunch, but to offer a subsidy as from 2018 subject to the following conditions: (i) the subsidy would be for a maximum of £5 per person to enable the price charged to participants to be held down to £20 for the foreseeable future. (ii) the Lunch would become the Group’s official Christmas Lunch and the occasion for the Group’s Awards Presentation. (iii) attendance at the Lunch will be open to all CTC/CUK members registered on the database managed by the Group’s Registration Officer, Keith Matthews.

23

Cycle Ink #188

(iv) publicity for each year’s event must be generated in good time and by all reasonable means, including using the Group’s website; e-mailing; “CycleInk”; and the Runs Lists. It was further AGREED that each year’s organiser should have the freedom to determine Lunch arrangements including venue, menu options and date (including day of the week). The Committee was also concerned that the proposed new arrangements might result in a far higher attendance than the current level of around 50, and AGREED that, in 2018 at least, spouses and friends who were not CTC/CUK members should not be invited. 11. COMMITTEE MEETINGS 2018:- Dates of Meetings were AGREED as follows: Committee - 14 February; 09 May; 15 August; 14 November Annual General Meeting 24 October. All dates are Wednesdays and start times will be 7.30 p.m. The venue for all meetings is Kinson Conservative Club. 12. ANY OTHER BUSINESS:(i) Paul Turner informed the Committee that as Group Facebook Coordinator he occasionally edits posted material, including advertisements and material emanating from contributors who are not Group members. (ii) Jim McDonald reported that two Group members had recently bern involved in incidents whilst cycling. John Evans had damaged the head of the femur on which he had recently undergone hip joint replacement. Dave Wiseman had damaged his machine in avoiding a vehicle that encroached on his path. (iii) Jim McDonald proposed that the Group arrange a first aid course so that members would be better able to respond when injuries occurred on the road. He said he was aware that The Red Cross offered classes for groups of 15-20 persons. No fee was charged but a voluntary donation of £200 was regarded as appropriate. Mike Walsh commented that cycling-specific first aid courses could be arranged with a motorcycling friend of Gerry Gray of Dorset Cyclists Development Group. It was AGREED that Jim McDonald should explore the possibilities of arranging a course for Group members. (iv) Jim McDonald reported that Dorset Cycling Network website does not mention CTC Wessex Cycling. Mike Walsh responded that he would raise this with Michael Evans. (v) Jim McDonald reported that he felt the Group did not provide itself with enough publicity, e.g. in the local press. It was agreed that the group needed a Publicity Officer.

(vi) Mike Walsh reported that a Group member had asked whether summer evening rides could be organised. The Committee AGREED to earmark £70 for the provision of a publicity leaflet and Mike Walsh agreed to liaise with potential Ride Leaders. (vii) Mike Walsh reported that Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers are providing an off- road ride on Saturdays during the winter for juniors. If our Group wanted to offer something similar thus attracting juniors into our folds we could use Steve Coombes who would be willing to provide a mountain bike course for £120. Mike will review how well the Jubilee's junior rides went and advise at the next Committee Meeting. (viii) Mike Walsh reported that the film “Battle Mountain” about Graeme O’Bree’s attempt to beat the World Human Powered Land Speed record was available to buy for £60 with rights to screen in public for a two-year period. He said it could be shown at a number of venues within the Group’s catchment area, including The Reef Centre at Colehill; Velo Domestique in Southbourne; Kinson Conservative Club; and The Lymington Centre at Lymington (the Gridiron Event HQ). It was AGREED to purchase the film. 13. DATE OF NEXT MEETING:- It was noted that the next Committee Meeting will be held at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday 14 February 2018 at Kinson Conservative Club.

Christmas Luncheon Thursday “Dawdlers”

By Bob Chittenden

Missing Persons:- - 28 cyclists were booked and had paid for this event which I thought may not attract much interest. I had a fancy for socialising at Christmas time, and Jim McDonald had asked me to arrange it. Slow take up at first, (mid October) but after Jim’s e-mail with the venue, menu and date, friends dipped their toes in the water, then dove in and it snowballed. So on 7th December (Thursday) I expected everyone to attend. Poor old Mike and Sybil Coombes cancelled because his mother’s funeral was on that day. I was able to return their cheque. Poor Lawrence had it fall on 14th December (a week late) “We’ve all dunnit”. I had visions of him searching Wareham’s streets for the venue. Nurse “Mac” Greenslade was called into Dorchester Hospital to dutifully cover for the afternoon’s procedures. Her phone calls failed to reach my ears. Happily 24 hungry cyclist sat down to dine. The Hall:- Jean, Wendy and Les Harris decorated our imitation Christmas tree whilst I was trying to arrange the seating and place settings in an “L” arranged tables. Known as “Not Just Sundaes” Community Café, an ancient listed Trinity building. The ambience seemed most agreeable. Two or three swapped places to join fiends, and others proceeded to make new friends. After the French greetings and embraces all settled. The Lunch:- I thought we were very lucky to have our choices of dishes from a menu devised and cooked by a lady and her volunteer team who ensured every dish was of fresh origin and prepared in Trinity’s own kitchen. I hear that everyone was delighted. We have learned that our chef was an “area finalist” at the national television “Master Chef” series

. Finally:- I loved everyone’s joining in and the help for me. When you could see me wobbling on my new hip, thank you all. The collection for the “Not Just Sundaes” charities was very noble. A generous £44.30p was handed to them that afternoon. Brilliant! Shall we do the same next year? Bob Chittenden 10th December 2017. Revised 6th January 2018.

By Bob Chittenden Battle Mountain Film Graeme Obree’s Story
