Chris and Rachelle Duffy from The Little Big Markets are excited about the development of two new events they’ll be facilitating this summer in the Papamoa Domain. The success of The Little Big Markets, which has been operating now for five years has provided the springboard into various events throughout the Bay, including Tauranga’s own Christmas in the Park, which last year raised thousands of dollars for charity and provided presents and food for underprivileged families and children. Earlier this year Chris and Rachelle collaborated with the Top 10 Holiday Resort in Papamoa to host the Beach Front Festival, which was a huge success. The local Papamoa community came out in their droves to support it and feedback received as a result was that there was a hunger for new and regular events in the Papamoa area. “We’re passionate about our local community and the events we hold,” Rachelle says, “and so the feedback we received after that event compelled us to have a look at what the community needs were in terms of events, and how we could service those needs within the beautiful Papamoa Domain”. Dinner in the Domain promises to be something special with a selection of some of the best street food vendors available, live cooking demonstrations and music performances to match the trendy ambience. The launch of Dinner in the Domain will feature a night art installation and some special music provided by Papamoa local Tiki Taane. This will be an evening food market to remember and one you’ll want to come back
to week after week. “We wanted to lift the bar and really differentiate from other food markets – yes, you’ll get an amazing meal but you’ll also have an amazing experience,” Chris says. Chris and Rachelle will be launching the Dinner in the Domain on Thursday 6 November, running every Thursday until 26 March 2015. If you are wondering what happened to the craft, then there’s no need to panic either Rachelle and Chris are also bringing The Little Big Markets to Papamoa with the artisan crafters making the Papamoa Domain their second home from third Sunday every month starting in October. The Little Big Markets is well known for the highest quality craft and its re-sellers of all things cool, a special place to meet up with friends and soak up the atmosphere, whether you are enjoying the music and food on offer or treating yourself or a special person to something unique from one of the many artisan stallholders. It’s because of its popularity and the subsequent requests for the markets to open in Papamoa that Rachelle and Chris have decided to complement the Dinner in the Domain with this locally iconic market. “We see the positive social impact the market has on the community,” Rachelle says, “and we know that a lot of people travel from the Papamoa region to attend, so it made sense for us to bring a chapter of The Little Big Markets to them.”

A ‘Passion Project’ - Josh Yong

“It’s a lot of money Josh, you will use it for a few weeks then it will end up lying around collecting dust.” Those were the words of my parents back in 2011 when I decided to buy my first camera, and I definitely understood where they were coming from. I did have a tendency in the past to have sudden inspiration for various projects, leading to impulsive purchases, only to be over it the next week. This ambition however was different; I had an idea, and I was prepared to invest in its realisation.

The idea was simple; collaborate with local musicians to create live music videos in various locations around Tauranga. The videos would be captured in one continuous take, in a setting intended to enhance the style of music being performed. This meant that not only did the musicians gain exposure, but it was also a showcase of Tauranga and its surroundings. I started by approaching friends from school, who I knew performed music and might be interested in working with me on this project. My good friends Mat Patrick and Lydia Bennett were keen and so we
headed out to the tropical greenhouse next to the Rose Gardens to shoot a song they had written about their recent trip to Kenya. It took a bit longer than expected, as we were constantly interrupted halfway through a take by elderly couples that would stroll right in front of the camera. After about nine takes, in 30 degree heat I might add, we finally got the result we were after. I shared the video on YouTube and it quickly received an extremely positive response. There was a great sense of satisfaction shared by Mat, Lydia and myself, and I had a determined desire to pursue this project. Since that first video two and a half years ago, I have worked with around 20 musicians, including Melbournebased singer-songwriter Jack Carty, X-Factor contestant Madeline Bradley, and local musicians such as Luke Thompson and Josh Pow. All together the videos have received an overwhelming 430,000 views from 150 countries around the world, which to me is just mind-blowingly difficult to comprehend. What I believe has made the project successful so far is the honesty that live music brings, and
to have a video which displays this honesty in its most raw form is a point of difference in the online market. When watching my videos, I want the viewer to feel as if they were there on location with us, watching the performance play out in front of their own eyes. “I have also received amazing support from the community; places such as The Incubator in the Historic Village and Creative Tauranga, to name only a few, have enabled the musicians and myself to bring a video concept to life. The positive feedback I have heard about this project, from both the musicians I have worked with, as well as the viewers, has been extremely encouraging, and the major driving force that has allowed me to continue with it. It is purely a passion project; nobody is making any financial gains from these videos. However the exposure and networking that the videos naturally bring allow for new opportunities for both the musicians and myself. In this sense everybody involved, from musician to viewer is able to take something away from the project, and as long as this remains true I will keep the project going.” You can find Josh’s videos on his YouTube channel – just type ‘Josh Yong’ into the YouTube search field. The new council quickly stamped its mark after last October’s election by stopping the draft Smart Arts Strategy. The draft Strategy provided diluted leadership with a murky list of actions in my opinion. I don’t know why a conference hotel was included in an arts strategy. Worst of all, it provided Creative Tauranga with more deliverables with no extra resources to achieve them. I’m pleased to see the Creative Tauranga Board seize the opportunity to reshape the organisation to strengthen its roots to why it exists. Councillors will review how we deliver our arts and culture services as we develop the Ten Year Plan over the next nine months. We will need your help in due course. I’m really passionate about seeing more magical picture postcard moments around Tauranga. A critical element to this is good public art. Public art is happening around Tauranga, but herein lays the problem. It’s not clear who decides what’s appropriate, when different artists can submit their proposals, and who looks after it once it’s finished. At first I was against setting rules for public art to conform within. But I’ve learnt such a policy is not about that. It’s about showing artists a pathway so they know who to talk to for their ideas become reality. I’ve also heard many other reasons why we need such a policy. But the policy is doomed to fail if there isn’t strong agreement on the problem it aims to solve. The policy is on Council’s high priority to-do list within twelve months. This depends on other urgent policies, such as the local legal high policy, being finalised. I’m committed to my personal vision of making Tauranga New Zealand’s most fun and innovative city.
Inachord Chorus presents the Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber Andrew Lloyd Webber is an innovative creator of popular musicals, and the songs from his shows have become imbedded in entertainment lore.
Inachord Chorus is an accomplished local choir, and many of the group have been singing together for over a decade. They demonstrate their perfect harmony in a mixture of à capella and accompanied singing. The varied programme also features guest artists Petrina Thomas Chisholm and Dave Wilson. Petrina Thomas-Chisholm, a drama and singing teacher at Otumoetai College, has a stellar performance history, her most recent local role being that of Sandy in Grease last year. Dave Wilson is an experienced producer and director whose production company Zenith has staged several musicals. He also
sings with the group ‘Trio’. Petrina and Dave will perform individually and as a duet. The Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber, at Baycourt Theatre on Saturday 16 August, promises to be a wonderful musical evening revisiting the hits of this prolific popular composer whose appeal spans the generations.

Katikati Art Group - Exhibition The Katikati Art Group will be holding its’ Annual Exhibition from 3-6 October. The Group has about 70 members and of this number there are approximately 45 who exhibit each year, which means there are over 300 paintings on show and for sale. Over the years the Katikati Group has built up an excellent reputation for a well-run and interesting Exhibition with high-calibre paintings for sale at reasonable prices. Anyone wishing to change their ‘painting decor’ would be well-advised to visit the Memorial Hall and make their selection from the many and varied paintings on display.
We have a wide range of artistic talent in the group and there is sure to be something that will appeal to everyone. The Group has grown so large (and our premises are rather small) that we are open from 10am each day throughout the week to cater for those who wish to gather together, exchange ideas, get inspiration from others, and spend a day painting. This year we have re-carpeted the Gallery and also re-painted the inside, which has given it a clean fresh look. A new initiative was started recently, allowing individual members to display
paintings for a fortnight at a time in the Foyer of the Gallery and this has created a considerable amount of interest in the town. The Exhibition is to be held in the War Memorial Hall, Main Road, Katikati, (opposite the Information Centre) and kicks off at 7pm on Thursday 2 October with a Wine and Cheese evening; it is thereafter open from 10 am to 4pm on Friday 3 October until Monday 6 October. Paintings can be purchased any time during opening hours and collected at the close of the Exhibition on Monday. We look forward to seeing you in Katikati for the Exhibition.

Mark your diaries and get ready to make some colour because the Colour Dash is coming to the Bay of Plenty in October 2014 as the first event in the Dash Downunder Tour. This fun, family-friendly event is billed as the ‘world’s brightest 5km’ as you walk or run along a dedicated route and are dashed with special colourful dust along the way. The Dash Down Under Tour is the result of local woman Michelle Whitmore’s experience in the USA where she participated in the event in January. “The thing I loved about the event was that people of all ages and fitness levels were taking part with most walking (and some running), but everyone smiling and having a good time”, she said. Inspired by the event and driven by a desire to create a business that can give back to the community, Michelle came back to NZ and initiated a conversation with Color Dash USA which resulted in the creation of an Australasian arm to the business. The philosophy of the event is that 50% of all registrations are given back to a nominated charity. Choosing the charity for the first Dash Downunder Tour was easy for Michelle who has been working alongside local representatives of Ronald McDonald House Auckland for some time searching for a fundraising option. Tauranga’s RMHA representative Kevin Russo loved the concept too and quickly introduced Michelle to his Head Office team and a happy union was formed. Tauranga marks the start of a North Island tour with the Tauranga Racecourse being chosen for its central location and easy parking. The Dash is to be held 5 October with the fun starting at 2pm with American band Summertime Dropouts on hand to get festivities underway. “My love of writing came as an organic outcome, born from an uncontrollable need to express myself and all the wayward and somewhat obscure feelings, thoughts and experiences that live within me. It was a wild need that demanded my focus and eventuated with my first novel, They of Star.” This, taken from the bio on his webpage, is the beginning of an insight into the mind of Mervyn Noel Whitley Jnr, a local writer who crafted his debut novel, They of Star, over an eight-year period. “I wrote and rewrote it about six times to ensure every single word was placed exactly where I wanted it. Nothing within this book is random; everything is perfectly deliberate. “And it was important to me,” Martin

An evil presence, kin to the family of The Star, has started to make itself known in The Land and all prepare for the inevitable battle they know must come. They must also protect a powerful secret that will determine the fate of those living upon The Land; a secret that can save or destroy their future and that, depending on who is the possessor of this most honoured and sacred of secrets, a secret that will bring either freedom or death. Finding a means to define the writings of Mervyn is itself a challenge. Entwined within the pages of They of Star are words
to express himself and has never stopped doing so. Over the years he has compiled numerous short stories, poems, a few short films and his novel. He has lived in many different countries, including Australia and America, with almost five years in Italy. He now finds himself settled into the relaxed lifestyle of Mount Maunganui. He is in the process of lining up interviews with literary agencies and publishing houses in London and New York to garner international representation and distribution of They of Star. He was the first author from Niue at the 2012 Frankfurt International Book Fair - his mother is Nieuan - with a soft release of They of Star that created an initial round of interest

If a character experiences a moment of silence, just the word itself will appear upon the page, so as to have the reader share that moment of silence with this character. Within They of Star is honest beauty, pain, love and loss, because isn’t this what we all experience?” Mervyn’s background is diverse. Never initially regarding himself as a writer, he found when he was alone that writing was a means
he is now building upon. Mervyn decided to bring the book home to New Zealand to work on it one final time and to produce it in its present paperback format. He performs emotive and personal readings infused with music and performance so as to best express his novel’s intentions. Such unique and intimate readings have grown greatly in popularity. Mervyn is currently working on his second novel, as well as working with local musicians to write the original music that will accompany future readings. “We all must do what we all must do,” Mervyn says. “If it is writing that I must do, then I cannot deny this urge. I will therefore sit and write and let what dreams may, come.”

“As a 17 year old, most people don’t understand what I talk about. I speak way too fast, I laugh at my own jokes, and I often try to use words which make me sound smart. But I am only just beginning to understand that the world which I have fallen in love with is not something that can be understood within five minutes. As I am currently in my last year of High School, I have been involved in the 2014 Smokefree Rock Quest, and somehow managed to not only take out the Woman’s Musicianship Award, but also win the Solo/Duo category in the Bay of Plenty regional final. This meant creating a 20min video submission of my original songs for the selection process to possibly have the chance to be a part of the national final. For me, I wanted my video to be something that the Judges would remember, especially because there are so many entrants who have made it to this stage in the competition. So, I had the help of some extremely talented people to create a video which I hoped would capture the emotion of my lyrics and songs as a whole and trigger curiosity as to who I am as an artist. To do this, I chose five different locations around the city and figured out which of my songs would suit the setting, and filmed each video in a different place. One of the videos included using the piano from Creative Tauranga, and playing it in the middle of the tunnel by the City Council and town library. The best part about this video was that real life and real people were a part of the film, curious as to what was happening around them. I constantly want to be finding ways of doing things that have never been done before and achieving the tasks that most people wouldn’t dare attempt.”

“At eleven years old I set out to learn some sort of instrument because I failed at everything else as a child. Unfortunately there were no bass guitar lesson slots available so I took up what was free… the drums! I was the only one who stuck with it and couldn’t be happier. I’ve been playing for over 15 years and know more about drumming than anything else in my life. This was mainly due to the experience I’ve had playing with so many different musicians from around the country. From the embarrassing stepping stones of Rock Quest competitions, to playing in front of thousands opening for my drumming heroes, I’ve had a great run. My greatest achievement to date would
be the upcoming release of the Barracks album called Ghosts, which has been a huge endeavour for myself and my good friends in the band. It has taken us years writing, in and out of the studio to get the album to perfection. It is a direct take from my influences, mainly being early 2000s nu metal drumming and some new flair from accented blast beats and swing. Best of all, the recording is real drumming. Being an originals musician the finances aren’t great. We spend thousands on gear purchases and dreaded maintenance. I’ve had to work full time since I was 18 with the idea in the back in my head, “I’m only doing this so I can play drums”. But now I have a family and
a mortgage, I’ve decided to start selling my honed skills on the tubs. The business cards are on their way and the Facebook page has started doing its circulation to producers and other musicians, scouting for work with that artist who needs a heavy hitting drummer who can hold it down in the studio. Connecting Community through Creative Celebration The Sundaise Music Festival has quickly become one of the highlights on the New Zealand Festival calendar and will return to Dickey Flat near Waihi in March 2015. A collection of music, art and sustainability, the three day event will see some of New Zealand‘s most celebrated musicians, artists and performers share the stage with emerging local talent. “We work really hard to bring some of New Zealand’s most recognised performers to the festival, as well as creating opportunities for our local emerging artists and musicians to get involved and gain some exposure,” says Festival Director Al Sorley. The Sundaise vision - Connecting community through creative celebration - has the continued support of Creative Communities - Hauraki District. This helps the festival support local artists and to deliver a diverse range of creative
performances and workshops that the festival community and the children of the festival can particpate in and enjoy. Sustainability plays a leading role at the festival with Sundaise setting a new standard in waste minimisation for events. Last year’s festival saw only one wheelie bin of waste sent to landfill with 250 people on site. A number of workshops are held during the festival to show people how their actions can have a more positive impact on the environment, including planting, composting and recycling. Applications are now being accepted for musicians, artists, performers, workshops, market stalls and the kids’ zone. In ART101: A beginner’s guide Tauranga Art Gallery presents a whole A to Z of artistic terms, technique, medium and artists. The exhibition touches on etching, framing, illustration, oil painting and life drawing and features artist journals, photographs, film, as well as paintings, drawings and sculptural works. Tauranga Art Gallery Director Penelope Jackson says artworks have been drawn from across the country for the new exhibition. ART101 aims to encourage curiosity about art and being an artist, she says. “ART101 is a play on the idea of an introductory survey course. National Radio has a programme called MUSIC101, which is great in whetting your listening appetite – a good learning experience but not dry. That’s what I was aiming for with ART101,” she says. “We have secured some fabulous loans for the exhibition including works by Pablo Picasso, Colin McCahon, Frances Hodgkins, Albrecht Dürer, Marti Friedlander, Dick Frizzell and Rita Angus to name just a few. Curated around the alphabet, this is a very full exhibition that much can be learned from as well as having lots of visual treats.” She says the exhibition is for all ages, and that the Gallery is running a number of public programmes including talks and workshops while ART101 is on. “We hope people might be inspired to seek more information or give some form of art a go.” Works have been generously loaned by: Anderson Park Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, The Fletcher Trust, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Library, The Wallace Arts Trust and private lenders and artists. ART101 also draws on the Gallery’s own Collection featuring works by Edward Bullmore, Dame Robin White, and Nigel Brown. ART101: A beginner’s Guide runs at the Gallery until 7 September.
