Summer Reading Program Showcase

T

he Cheshire Library was anything but quiet when Connecticut Librarians "caught the reading bug" early at the Children's Librarians' Roundtable-South, Summer Reading Showcase on Monday, January 28. The theme of the showcase was crafted around the national collaborative summer reading program, and performers were recommended from librarians across the state, including: Gayle Byrne (Killingworth Library), Judy Rabin (Woodbridge Town Library), Julie Faraci (URS Corporation), Debra Verrillo (North Branford Libraries), and Suellen Heinrich (Guilford Free Public Library). Special thanks to Roundtable Chair Sue Hartley of Cheshire Public Library, who hosted the event. Emcee Bryan Flint, the consummate performer, comic, and magician, of Showtime Fun Productions, kept the fun rolling in between the whirlwind of 13 acts (see sidebar right).

Library Happenings and Member News To celebrate new Sunday hours at the Henry Carter Hull Library (Clinton), the Russ Becker Quartet performed a free jazz concert on Sunday, January 6 to an enthusiastic crowd of over 60 people. "The concert was a resounding success," said library director Maribeth Breen. "It was great to see so many people in the library on our inaugural Sunday." The quartet played for two hours and told the audience that the library had many of the songs they played in its compact disc collection. The event kicked off an exciting three months of a programs and activities for all ages from a beginner ballroom dance to the "Museums at the Library" lecture series. Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury is pleased to announce its 2008 "Ready To Read" summer program, designed to encourage youngsters to hit the books once school goes into recess. Registration is now under way for your library to participate and possibly win valuable prizes from Quassy that can be used for fundraising. Divisions have been established for school as well as public libraries. There is no fee to participate. The park's program is quite simple: Children completing three books at their reading level can earn a free all-day ride pass. Completed reading certificates may be redeemed during two weekends in September 2008. Email ron@quassy.com with the complete name and address of your library, and indicate if the library is a school or public facility, include a contact person and e-mail address. The kick off weekend for "Ready To Read" will be May 3 and 4 at Quassy Amusement Park with a special guest appearance by a favorite character among young readers. Lorri Huddy is leaving iCONN for a new job with the CTW Consortium. She also served as a member of the CLC Database committee. Kathy Cockcroft will be leaving her post as director of the Canton Public Library. She and her husband are off to Texas for a new adventure!

The Southington Library and Museum's Food for Fines program during the holidays was a huge success. Patrons were able to clear their accounts of overdue fines by bringing in nonperishable food items, hats, mittens and small articles of winter clothing; but many more just contributed out of generosity and a spirit of giving. The library delivered three truckloads of food to the Southington Community Service Department. Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport has a new librarian, Shelley Strohm, shown far right with staffers (l to r): Mark Gore, Quiming Han, Doug Alton, Jennifer Falasco, and Lois McCrackne. The Stratford Library Teen Department was the grateful recipient of a $750 donation from the Stratford Police Athletic League (PAL) recently. The library used the donation to augment its teen collection of books dealing with sports, hobbies, biographies, health and nutrition. Stratford PAL Treasurer Officer Dave Mullane checks out the new book display funded by the Police Athletic League with Library Teen Services Department Head Lucretia Duwel. The Bethel Library was recently featured on the Bethel Today Show. Host Marty Lawlor chatted with former Library Board Chair, Jane Bickford and President of the Friends of the Library, Jenny Tesar, about the latest news from the library. Other topics included the library's upcoming programs, services, and how to help the library reach its fundraising goals. The program aired on local access cable. State senators Paul Doyle and John Fonfara at the State Capitol for the CHET College Savings Challenge Awards Reception. Kate Sheehan starts at Darien Public Library on March 1 as Head of Knowledge and Innovation Services.

OK, in 2007, we may have had another "Americans Don't Read Anymore" report from the NEA, public library closings and cutbacks across the nation, and school librarians threatened by No Child Left Behind. But that was then. And this is 2008. Our WWL (Wonderful Web Librarian) Christine Sarrazin located a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign saying that young adults are the heaviest users of public libraries! And are we proud of the CLA conference committee who has already asked CLC to co-sponsor an appearance by Pew Director Lee Reine at the CLA conference in April. Visit http:// www.usatoday.com/tech/products/200712-30-1107964518_x.htm to learn more about the study. Anne O'Connor is the new Head of Reference Services at Scranton Library in Madison, replacing Retia Cutbill who has retired. Anne previously worked for the Donohue Group and most recently was Head of Reference at the Peterson Library, University of New Haven. Dawn Higginson is the new Director at Oxford Library. Prior to this position, Dawn was Youth Services Librarian at Oxford Public Library. Bridget Quinn Carey, Director at Essex Public Library, has been appointed as Director at Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System. TechSoup's MaintainIT Project announces the latest Cookbook, packed with tips, techniques, and stories about supporting public computers from libraries across the country. February Recap

I

Children's Librarians' Roundtable: Fairfield County

f you're a regular participant in one or more of CLC's roundtables, you already know how beneficial it is to gather with your colleagues to discuss topics of mutual interest. But what if you have something pressing to discuss that can't wait for the next meeting? What if you're rarely able to leave your library to attend?

Connecticut-based listservs exist for a variety of librarianship's specialties, such as children's librarians, young adult librarians, school media specialists, and the like, as well as CONNTECH and CLClist for library staff of all stripes. But for contacting local colleagues, or colleagues in your specialized area of expertise, we have nothing but messy home-grown email address books—until now... Using the elegant (and FREE) wizardry of Google, CLC has set up "Google Groups" discussion groups for each of our roundtables. Each group has a home on the web where anyone can view discussion topics and postings.

Chair: Tess Beck, Stratford Library Association Are you interested in chairing this roundtable? Contact Tess at tess@stratfor dlibrary.or g. tess@stratfordlibrary.or dlibrary.org.

The group discussed the 2009 Nutmegs at their meeting on February 4. Contact Margaret Borchers at mborchers@biblio.org or Tess Beck to request a confidential list of 2009 books.

Genealogy Librarians’ Roundtable Chair: Sherry Gelbwasser, Asnuntuck Community College Would you like to co-chair this roundtable? Email Sherry at sgelbwasser@acc.commnet.edu.

The Genealogy Librarians Roundtable invites all Connecticut librarians whose work involves helping people trace their family histories or who are interested in helping their patrons use Connecticut library resources for genealogical research. Staff from all types of libraries in Connecticut are welcome—academic, public, school, and special. Join us at our next meeting in March!

Young Adult Librarians' Roundtable: Capitol Region Chair: Ann Marie Naples, West Hartford Public Library Would you like to co-chair this roundtable? Contact Ann Marie at anaples@westhartfordlibrary.org.

To contribute to the discussions, or have postings sent to you via email or RSS, just join the group. It's easy and you don't need a Google (or "gmail") email address:

• Visit CLC's roundtable page at www.ctlibrarians.org/ events/roundtables.html

• Scroll to your favorite roundtable, and enter your email address into the appropriate "Google Groups" form

• Follow the link in the confirmation email you receive • Answer one question: What library do you represent? • Wait for CLC staff to approve your membership request • Become a member! Once you're a member, you can post messages to the group, and see who else has joined. Start discussions or contribute to them. How you use this tool is up to you—but it can be a powerful way to network without leaving your desk.

The group discussed Teen Tech Week. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to use libraries' nonprint resources for education and recreation, and to recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals in the field of information technology. The 2008 celebration is March 2-8.

Coming Up Children's Librarians' Roundtable: Capitol Region Co-chairs: Shelley Spoering, Simsbury Public Library; and Helen Aveline, Lucy Robbins Welles Library/Newington

Don't miss the next CLR-CR meeting on Intermediate Nutmegs at the South Windsor Public Library on Monday, February 11. Meeting starts at 9 am for coffee and networking and the roundtable discussion starts at 9:30 am.

CLC's Snow Policy If school is delayed in the town hosting the event, the event will go on as scheduled. If school is cancelled in the host town, the event will be postponed to the snow date.

nfortunately, we did not get enough people for a charter to BookExpo 2008 in Los Angeles. (Most of us will have to wait until 2009 when it returns to New York!) But for those brave souls who will be California bound, BEA’s Steve Rosato has done some looking into fares, and right now the average fare from Bradley to LAX is well under $400 for a direct flight and under $350 out of JFK. For CLC members, BEA will provide a $65.00 badge rate (saving $20.00 off the standard rate). Lastly, they still have rooms at the BEA Librarian Hotel for $199/night and that is walking distance to the convention center (it is the closest hotel) and the only hotel downtown that is not sold out.
