ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012

CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION A FOUNDATION FOR ENGAGED LEARNING

PHILANTHROPY @ WORK

MESSAGE FROM THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

To our Alumni and Friends: When you take a few minutes to look through this Cleveland State University Foundation Annual Report, I know you will share my pride over the growth of CSU into a vibrant and respected institution. This is due, in no small part, to the support of our graduates and donors who are ambassadors for the University, role models for our students, and believers in the hope and promise that Cleveland State represents. This year, some 17,500 students chose Cleveland State for their higher education. We are helping many of them achieve their dream of attaining a college degree through scholarship assistance. Our second-annual Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise raised a record $504,300 in support of scholarships, thanks to the generosity of lead sponsor Parker Hannifin Corporation and other corporate and individual supporters. Radiance scholarships are earmarked specifically for students at risk of dropping out of school because of finances. Also this year, retired alumnus Robert Campenella, BS ’71, made a $2.5 million provision in his estate plan for scholarships in recognition of the importance of education. Going forward, private support will be more crucial than ever. Nationally, financing for higher education dropped 7.6 percent last year — the sharpest decline in half a century. In Ohio, the state subsidy for our operating budget has dropped through the years from 60 percent to 40 percent to the current 27 percent — and is likely to decrease even further. The message is clear: higher education must look well beyond the public sector for funding. That’s why we are dependent upon, and so grateful for, the generosity of private donors. If we are to aspire to greatness — and our ambition is nothing less than to transform Cleveland State into a best-in-class urban university — we need your continued financial support, your volunteerism and service, and your mentorship of our students. Thank you very much for all that you do for Cleveland State. I look forward to working with you to assure a bright future for our University and our students. Ronald M. Berkman President, Cleveland State University

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP

To our Alumni and Friends: There are countless reasons to feel positive about Cleveland State University – a burgeoning enrollment of academically competitive students, an esteemed faculty, a challenging curriculum that provides an engaged learning experience, a campus that is spurring downtown growth and development, and so much more. Cleveland State has matured into an institution that is highly respected, for both the education it provides and the leadership role it plays in the community. A degree from Cleveland State is respected by employers and pays dividends to graduates. Your investment in the University also pays dividends. This year, Foundation funds under investment grew to $54.3 million, the highest total ever. Our alumni and friends realize and appreciate the value of CSU to both students and Northeast Ohio and are investing accordingly. Just as Cleveland State University is committed to providing access to higher education, the CSU Foundation is committed to growing its endowment to support student scholarships, faculty research and more. To this end, we elected 15 new members to the Foundation Board of Directors this year and we invited representatives of CSU’s Visiting Committees to join the board as well. Already, these new members are bringing energy, ideas and passion to our mission. The University’s continued growth depends upon its ability to guide students along a clearly defined path to graduation and fulfilling careers, and to producing visionary leaders who are committed to the future of Northeast Ohio. With your support, we will continue to succeed. Steven A. Minter

PHILANTHROPIC HIGHLIGHTS 2011-2012 CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION FUNDS UNDER INVESTMENT REACHED AN ALL-TIME HIGH — $54.3 MILLION,

thanks to generous gifts and prudent financial counsel. Dr. Antonie van den Bogert

The Parker Hannifin Foundation pledged $1.5 million toward research infrastructure and support of an Endowed Chair in human motion and control to assist individuals with disabilities and confined to wheelchairs. The pledge will fund a laboratory with advanced treadmills, motion sensors and three-dimensional imaging equipment, all aimed at developing improved methods to study human movement and replicate healthy limbs in prosthetics and orthotics. Dr. Antonie van den Bogert, an internationally renowned researcher in biomechanics, has joined the Fenn College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering as the Parker Hannifin Endowed Chair in Human Motion and Control.

With Parker Hannifin as lead sponsor, Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise raised $504,300 for student scholarships, surpassing its first year total of $377,000. Radiance scholarships were awarded to 119 undergraduate students in good academic standing who were at risk for dropping out of school because of finances. Alumnus Donald Washkewicz, Parker’s chairman, CEO and president, received CSU’s President’s Medal. The goal is $750,000 for the next Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise on Friday, May 10, 2013.

CSU FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 4

The Partnership for Urban Health, a Cleveland State/Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) collaboration to train primary care physicians to serve urban areas, received generous support. The Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation awarded a $500,000 three-year grant to establish a mentoring program that will involve educators, doctors and community champions to help assure the success of students being trained as primary care physicians. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio awarded a $198,343 grant as lead sponsor of the Careers in Health and Medical Professions (CHAMPS) program for high school students. CHAMPS, an integral component of the high school-CSU-NEOMED pipeline, builds awareness of medical and health careers, increases knowledge in the sciences and mathematics, enhances readiness for college, and sharpens personal skills. The Partnership for Urban Health has also received generous support from the Cleveland Foundation, Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, Saint Luke’s Foundation and the David and Inez Myers Foundation.

PHILANTHROPIC HIGHLIGHTS – GIFTS, GRANTS AND PLEDGES • Cleveland State University secured more than $2.4 million for scholarships; the number of endowed scholarships increased from 261 to 272.

• Alumnus Robert P. Campanella, ’71 BS, made a $2.5 million provision in his estate plan to provide scholarships for students in engineering, business and the physical sciences. Mr. Campanella was taking Ohio State University night classes at Lakewood High School when CSU was established in 1964. His credits transferred and he earned a degree in mathematics. Throughout college, he worked third shift as a tool grinder. Following graduation, he found success as an engineer for Eaton Corporation for 20 years and as a businessman. He is now retired and living in Florida.

• Ronald J. Davis, BBA ’69 and MBA ’75, George E. Davis, Jr. and Barbara Morse donated $179,500 to the Ronald J. Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund. • Parker Hannifin Foundation pledged $150,000 for ongoing cancer research by Dr. Michael Kalafatis, professor of chemistry.

• Peter A. and Rita M. Carfagna, majority owners of the Lake County Captains, a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, established the Captains Scholarship presented by the Carfagna Family to benefit outstanding students at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law who are interested in pursuing a career in sports or entertainment law. Mr. Carfagna serves as an Executive-inResidence at C|M|Law.

• Attorney S. Lee Kohrman, a member of the CSU Foundation Board of Directors and president of the David and Inez Myers Foundation, established the Max I. Kohrman Memorial Endowed Public Interest Fellowship Fund in memory of his father. The late Mr. Kohrman practiced law in Cleveland for nearly 50 years. CSU FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 7

CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY HIGHLIGHTS • Fall semester 2012 enrollment surpassed 17,500, with the largest freshman class in CSU history — 1,580 students. The freshman class is the most academically competitive ever — with ACT scores and a grade point average topping the national average. Over the past two years, freshman enrollment has soared 26 percent while retention and graduation rates also have improved.

• CSU’s Arts Campus, a “Power of Three” partnership between the University, Cleveland Play House and PlayhouseSquare, is generating national student interest and publicity. CSU’s theatre, dance and art departments have relocated to the refurbished Allen Theatre and Middough Building, while The Galleries at CSU has relocated to the Cowell & Hubbard Building. The Arts Campus, unlike any other in the nation, is providing students in all arts genres with state-of-the-art facilities while enabling them to hone their skills alongside working arts professionals.

CSU FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 8

• Cleveland State was awarded two grants totaling $1.3 million from the National Science Foundation to increase the number of graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). An $875,000 grant — one of only 22 awarded nationally — will help students complete mathematics requirements. A $450,000 grant will provide STEM scholarships.

• Campus International School, an innovative collaboration between CSU and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, raised more than $60,000 at One World! Soiree, its first-ever fundraiser. Started in 2010, the school has outgrown its original facility and has moved to Cole Center on the CSU campus. Adding a grade each year, the academically rigorous school offers grades K-4 and will eventually expand to K-12.

• In a new partnership with CSU, Progressive Insurance pledged to fund five student scholarships and initiated its first-ever internship program, designed to help students acquire the skills and knowledge that employers seek. Progressive employs nearly 200 CSU alumni.

CSU FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 9

• The Partnership for Urban Health, a CSU/Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) partnership, is training students, especially minorities, to be urban primary care physicians at the NEOMED academic campus at CSU. The shortage of such physicians is a national healthcare issue. The initiative offers two unique programs – one targeting individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree and are willing to make a commitment to primary care in urban settings, and one targeting incoming CSU freshmen from minority and disadvantaged backgrounds who want to study health professions.

• Sixteen CSU graduate programs were featured in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 edition of America’s Best Grad Schools. The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs was ranked second in the nation for the graduate specialty of city management and urban policy. Levin’s graduate specialization in the management of nonprofit organizations was ranked 12th nationally and is the only ranked program in Ohio. The Cleveland-Marshall College of Law came in 38th among law schools for part-time students. The Master of Occupational Therapy program, in the College of Sciences and Health Professions and the only graduate-level occupational therapy program in Northeast Ohio, was 58th in the nation.

• Physics Professor James A. Lock received the Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award for Faculty Excellence, the highest University honor recognizing faculty members for exceptional achievements in teaching, research, and service. Dr. Hwang, a member of the CSU Foundation Board of Directors and the founder, president and CEO of H Technologies Group, established the award through a gift to the Foundation to help inspire faculty to ever-increasing levels of excellence. Dr. Lock also received CSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award for Research for his work in optical physics and applied and mathematical optics. • Other 2011-12 honorees were Dr. Beth Ekelman, Distinguished Faculty Award for Service, Dr. Vera D. Vogelsang-Coombs and Dr. Dinah Volk, Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching, and Dr. Mary Ellen Waithe, Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.

• CSU’s wind tower at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, is the first in a major league ballpark and has been featured in USA Today. The 21-foot-tall, corkscrew-shaped tower has four turbines that automatically rotate to face into the wind and is the latest advancement in wind amplification research by Dr. Majid Rashidi, the Betty L. Gordon Distinguished Professor and chair of engineering technology at CSU’s Fenn College of Engineering.

• Phase one of Campus Village, Cleveland’s largest residential development in 30 years, opened in August 2012 and is completely full; there is a waiting list for phase two, which will open in August 2013. Campus Village is creating a thriving neighborhood in the heart of the city and includes housing for 600 residents in one-, two-, threeand four-bedroom, market-rate apartments, as well as shops, restaurants, and green spaces. Campus Village is named The Langston, in honor of prominent local poet Langston Hughes.

Cleveland State University’s Scholarship Luncheon is an annual event that personalizes philanthropy.

at CSU. He now is at Northeast Ohio Medical University, studying to be a primary care physician.

This year, more than 200 scholarship donors and student recipients attended, learning more about each other and putting faces to the generosity that grows each year. Three students shared their personal stories of how scholarships have impacted their lives.

Rachel Strongoli, an art major, holds the Gerald and Victoria Read Honors Scholarship. The award alleviates the financial burden of college on her family.

Brian Allen, who graduated in May with a degree in biology, received the Carl D. Glickman Honors Program Scholarship for all of his four years

Andrew Gotlieb graduated in May with a master’s degree in urban planning, design and development. He held the Norman Krumholz Scholarship and the Catherine A. and David P. O’Neill Hope Scholarship. Now enrolled in Cleveland-

CSU FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 12

Marshall College of Law, Gotlieb hopes to someday be a scholarship donor himself so future students can benefit from the same opportunities he has had. Stressing the importance of private support, particularly as federal, state and local governments have cut back on funds for higher education, President Ronald M. Berkman noted, “CSU is increasingly becoming the school of choice for students. Scholarships are critically important to helping them achieve their dreams.”

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

JENNIFER CHAMBERS graduated from Lorain County Community College (LCCC) with two associate degrees and then enrolled in the nonprofit administration degree program offered through a CSU/LCCC partnership. The Sandusky area resident took all her CSU classes at LCCC until her final semester. She will graduate in December 2012.

As president of CSU’s student chapter of Engineers Without Borders, IDDRISU SEIDU has traveled to Belize to help complete construction of a school which doubles as a community hurricane shelter. He has held two co-op positions and interns at a local engineering firm. After graduating in May 2013, the mechanical engineering major will continue on at CSU for his master’s degree. He hopes for a career in the space or robotics industries.

Swimmer CARYS BEHN won 25 events and set multiple records in her debut season as a Viking; last year she was the first undefeated swimmer in the Horizon League Championships, winning seven gold medals. An intern in CSU’s Marketing Department, Carys will graduate in December 2012 with a degree in advertising and promotional communication.

When MEGANN WELSH graduates in May 2013, she’ll be the seventh member of her family with a nursing degree. She hopes to find a hospital or clinic position in obstetrics or pediatrics and enroll part time in CSU’s online master of nursing program with the goal of becoming a forensic nurse examiner. Megann is president of CSU’s Student Nurse Association.

A third-year forward on the Viking basketball team, LUDOVIC NDAYE is majoring in health sciences/ physical therapy and minoring in psychology in order to help others like himself who have suffered sportsrelated injuries. The Republic of the Congo, Africa native will graduate in 2014.

SARAH KASPER, a history major/anthropology minor, will graduate in May 2013. She’ll then pursue a master’s degree in history at CSU and eventually hopes to earn a Ph.D. and teach at the college level. The first in her family to attend college, she believes scholarships are an investment in students who want to use their education to benefit the Cleveland area following graduation.

ALIA ALMASHNI is trilingual, holds degrees from Cuyahoga Community College, John Carroll University and CSU (master’s in Spanish), and is now pursuing teaching certification in a foreign language with a minor in Arabic and Middle Eastern studies. She hopes to graduate in 2013 and then teach foreign language in middle school.

ELDAR SOULIAEV spent two weeks in South Korea on a CSU Study Abroad experience. The accounting/ international business major, a native of Russia, transferred to CSU after earning an associate degree from Cuyahoga Community College. He will graduate in May 2013 and plans to teach English and Russian abroad.

When you support scholarships at Cleveland State University, you invest in students who are changing their lives through education.
