Dear Friends, The start of another academic year brings many opportunities for celebration. Our beautiful campus is rapidly growing with academic and nonacademic development projects. The Athletic Center opened this fall and is providing much-needed facilities for our football and men’s and women’s track teams. Currently under construction is the Christian Leadership Building, and ground has been broken for expansions to the Hunter Reception Center and the Derry Patterson Wingo School of Nursing building. Our curriculum is growing also with the addition of a master of science in organizational management. This new graduate program, offered by the College of Adult and Professional Studies, is entirely online and partners with Pearson Learning Solutions to leverage leading technology. Courses in the master’s degree in organizational management will utilize case studies and application scenarios as part of the critical thinking and implementation process. The School of Nursing’s master of science in nursing program was recently granted accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. All of this confirms what our students and faculty already know – that Charleston Southern is a great place to get an education. Also in this magazine, junior music therapy major, Megan Graber, explores the purpose of music in worship through a beautiful photo essay. The images accompanying her essay tell of her trips this summer to England with the Concert Singers and to Jamaica on a study abroad clinical experience. She is just one example of our students who are changing lives. Our annual President’s Report is also included in the issue. We are grateful for the support and prayers of our faithful donors, alumni and friends. The annual list of donors highlights the many individuals who have sacrificed to provide our students with an education where faith is an integral part of the educational experience.

In the context of the church, we can use the gift of music to teach doctrine. St. Basil once said, “… Oh the wise invention of the teacher who devised how we might at the same time sing and learn profitable things, whereby doctrines are somehow more deeply impressed upon the mind.” Much like the Credo in a traditional Eucharist service, we can use song to declare foundational truths and to assert our beliefs. Telco Federal Credit Union and as a Senior Financial Institution Auditor with KPMG Peat Marwick, CPAs. Woods received his Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Degree in Accounting and Finance from the College of Charleston and his MBA in Finance from Auburn University. Woods is also a graduate of the Southeast Regional Credit Union Management School, the Credit Union National Association Financial Management School and holds both Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor certificates. Woods currently serves as chairman of the board of the First Carolina Corporate Credit Union and serves on the Executive Committee of the board of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce as well as on the boards of Palmetto Cooperative Services, LLC, the South Carolina ACH Association and Indirect Lending Services, LLC. Woods also serves on the Community Investment Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Credit Union National Association. He is a member of the South Carolina Credit Union Management Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, South Carolina Associations of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors. Woods has previously served as chairman of the board for the South Carolina Credit Union League, chairman of the board of trustees of Charleston Southern University and on the Executive Committees of the Carolinas CFO Council and the Carolina Low Country Red Cross. He also serves as a trustee for, and past-chairman of the deacon body of Fort Johnson Baptist Church in Charleston, S.C.

Graduate Program in Organizational Management Added to Curriculum
T
he College of Adult and Professional Studies has begun offering classes toward a new master of science in organizational management degree. The master of science in organizational management is designed for career-minded professionals interested in developing skills that will prepare them for leadership and management roles in today’s business world. Courses will utilize case studies and application scenarios as part of the critical thinking and implementation process. Some of the unique aspects of the degree are: • Online: Offering a flexible, convenient class schedule • No prerequisites • Accelerated: (4 traditional semesters); no more than 2 classes at a time • Technology: Charleston Southern partners with Pearson Learning Solutions to leverage leading technology innovations In addition to topics such as project management, human resources management and making managerial decisions, the organizational management program will teach students the foundation of servant leadership, including how to implement the 10 characteristics of the
servant leader into business, community and professional outcomes. Making Ethical Management Decisions will teach students to weigh consequences and responsibilities and will explore whether there is a difference between ethical business practices and ethical Christian decisions in a business setting. Individual & Group Talent Management examines how to assess and measure talent and then manage that talent to the fullest. Students will learn how to put a strong group of individuals together to ensure a positive business outcome. Other classes will teach students how to avoid the many potential pitfalls from the misuse of statistical methods; will examine the innovative linkages, collaboration and partnership building systems and techniques that impact the management of any new and emerging business; and will help students consider how influential decisions are made while maintaining high ethical standards that provide service to others. CSU expands mobile app, new website
T
he University and U Mobile 360 recently released expanded features to the University’s smartphone application. The upgrades include a new admissions module, a searchable library feature, enhanced athletic content and an emergency module. These new features join Charleston Southern’s real-time news and events information, campus visit information and signup, video, streaming Chapel podcasts, a campus map and university directory, course catalogs, interactive polls, photo galleries and social media connections. “Charleston Southern has employed an aggressive mobile initiative to engage and connect with our current students, future students, alumni, family and friends,” said John Strubel, director of integrated marketing. “We’re excited

about this new communication technology.” In late fall, CSU and OmniUpdate, the leading web content management system provider for colleges and universities in the country, will deploy Omni’s OU Campus web solution, which is used to manage more than 550 college and university websites. Strubel said the partnership with both Straxis and OmniUpdate “marks the university’s commitment to building a solid foundation that allows us to quickly adopt current technology trends, while setting the stage for future technology trends.” The mobile applications are free and available for iPhone and Droid smartphones and Apple’s iPad tablet.

LifeWay donates Bibles
L
ifeWay, one of the largest providers of Christian products in the world, donated 800 Holman Christian Standard Bibles to the University to be given away. Campus Minister, Jon Davis, said, “It is a tremendous blessing and act of generosity by LifeWay. They show a true commitment to
spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to all generations. Without their kindness, we would not be able to have such a necessary resource.” Campus ministries staff has distributed Bibles to students and to people who have attended a Christian concert on campus.
CSU dedicates new athletic center

inety minutes before the Buccaneers kicked off the 2012 home schedule against Jacksonville, alumni, administrators, faculty, staff and friends were gathered at the north end of the stadium to dedicate and celebrate the opening of a new athletic center. “Football has been an extension that has allowed us to go out and share the vision of the university, to integrate faith in learning, leading and serving, and to do it on a national scope,” said head coach Jay Mills. “We are excited about where we are today, but we’re even more excited about the future.”
One by one, members of past, present and future Buccaneer football stepped forward to share their memories and their hopes for the future of the program. “I was fortunate to be a part of this team when we won our first conference game against VMI,” said alumnus Mike McCann. “I was also fortunate enough to be on the team that won our first conference championship.” McCann, who played safety and special teams for Charleston Southern from 2004-2008, was part of the Buccaneer teams that played Miami, Hawaii, and Miami (Ohio). “It’s a unique opportunity for these young men to play the top level of collegiate athletics. It’s exciting to know that all these games made this possible. I am so happy to be a part of this.” The new athletic center was designed by the Charleston-based architectural firm Goff D’Antonio. Trident Construction built the Charleston Southern athletic center under the direction of project manager Todd Bullwinkle and superintendent Clay Barber. Bullwinkle spoke to the crowd gathered at the dedication and announced the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, allowing CSU’s football team and coaches to move in a month prior to the season opener.

“For us a construction project is like a successful athletic team or program in that it is a ‘team’ effort,” said Bullwinkle. “From our perspective this (building) is the ultimate team collaborative construction project.” CSU leveraged this opportunity to begin some new traditions. On the floor at the center of the new locker room the Buccaneers team logo is surrounded by gold and blue markers. No player or team is permitted to step inside the circle until game day and, only then, the ropes will be pulled away and CSU players are allowed in the area. “That Cutlass reminds us of the past and those that came before us,” said Mills. “It recognizes the present team and builds hope for the future.” Charleston Southern dedicated three lockers to the memories of Kevin Keyes, Eddie Gadson Jr. and Scott Wehnes, former Buccaneer student-athletes who lost their lives. “It gives us hope and assurance that the legacy and memories will continuously touch the lives of others,” said Johnnie Keyes, mother of the late Kevin Keyes. “This building is a tremendous statement,” said former football coach David Dowd, pointing to the new athletic center over his shoulder. “I am so humbled to be here. The phrase I heard today -- ‘standing on the shoulders’ – whether it’s a new event, a new program, a new building is another chapter in the book of Charleston Southern University.” The Athletic Center is phase one of a threephase building complex to benefit athletics. Phase one houses locker rooms for football, men’s track, women’s track and training facilities.

Callis named humanities and social sciences dean
D
r. Keith Callis has been named dean of humanities and social sciences. Most recently from Louisiana Baptist College, Callis has extensive teaching and academic administrative experience. He has served at other institutions as chair of humanities, chair of the English department and liberal studies, chair of arts and sciences and director of the honors program. He has also worked extensively with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. “Dr. Callis is a proven Christian academic leader who will be invaluable to CSU in our faith integration efforts,” said President Jairy C. Hunter Jr.
Dr. Jackie Fish, interim vice president for academic affairs, said, “Dr. Callis brings great experience and academic background to CSU in both the role of dean of CHSS and as a professor of English. His new perspective will lead the CHSS in a strong direction.” Callis plans to work deliberately and methodically to integrate faith and learning. “I plan to give professors the freedom to work in their strengths and with creativity,” he said. MS in Nursing granted accreditation
T
he National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission has granted accreditation to CSU’s master of science in nursing program. The MSN program, which enrolled its first class in 2009, is a faith-based nurse educator graduate program that prepares nurses to serve in the faculty/nurse educator roles within the health care setting. “The NLNAC accreditation for the master of science in nursing indicates the excellence of our program,” said Dr. Tara Hulsey, dean of the School of Nursing. “This acknowledges that CSU’s MSN program meets or exceeds the standards and criteria established to designate educational quality.” The MSN curriculum prepares graduates to develop and evaluate curriculum and to effectively implement innovative teaching strategies using multiple learning formats while emphasizing the spiritual, ethical and moral dimensions of the art of nursing. The MSN degree in nursing education prepares nurses to teach at a faculty level in nursing programs as well as to accept educator positions within hospital and clinic settings. The NLNAC Board of Commissioners also granted our nursing baccalaureate nursing program continued accreditation. The Wingo School of Nursing program is one of only 15 schools in the country chosen to pilot the integration of national quality and safety competencies into the BSN curriculum.

Johnson Receives Barnabas Award
D
r. Sharon Johnson, professor of management in the School of Business, was named the Barnabas Award recipient at the 2012 Christian Business Faculty Association meeting at Trinity Western University in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The award recognizes individuals who have served CBFA joyfully and enthusiastically and contributed to its effectiveness and esprit de corps. With the award, Johnson became the first member in the 35-year history of the CBFA to receive all three of its awards. Also, Johnson copublished an article in the Christian Scholar’s Review related to interpersonal competition in business (“The God of the Games: Towards a Theology of Competition,” Christian Scholar’s Review, XLI:3, Spring 2012).

C
onstruction continues on the 25,000-square-foot Christian Leadership Building on center campus. The 2-story structure will include conference, lecture and classroom space and faculty offices. Expected completion is 2013. (A) Construction on the softball press box is complete. The 1,941-square-foot facility includes a press box, offices, restrooms, a team room, a utility room for building equipment and umpire changing room. Improvements were made to
the seating, fencing and landscaping areas. (B) The expansion to the Derry Patterson Wingo School of Nursing building will be 16,100 square feet with 2 stories, 2 classrooms, 2 skills teaching labs with observation booths and a work room, Home Health Suite teaching lab, 11 offices for new nursing faculty, lounge and interactive space for nursing students, and a work/ break room for the nursing faculty. Expected completion is fall 2013. (C)

The Hunter Reception Center addition adds 4,733 square feet to the building and renovates 1,150 square feet of the existing building. It will be completed during summer 2013 so that CAPS, Student Accounts, Cashier, Financial Aid and Military Services can relocate prior to fall semester 2013. The building has been designed so that the southern end of the addition can be easily extended to accommodate more spaces should that become necessary in the future. (D)

Previously he served as a pastor for 20 years and for almost 20 years with the International Mission Board (Southern Baptist Convention). While with the IMB, he and his wife, Kathy, served for 10 years as missionaries to Venezuela. He then was human needs consultant and director of the Volunteers in Missions Department of the IMB in Richmond, Va.
Wendy Harris Pyle graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a master of social work degree in May. She works for the Caldwell County Department of Social Services as a social work supervisor in child protective services, where she has worked for the past 17 years. She and her husband, Tracy, and their son, Joshua, live in Lenoir, N.C.
Lisa Kluttz King and her husband, Jeff, are missionaries with World Witness. They are currently in Costa Rica for eight months of language school and then will be moving to Guadalajara, Mexico, to be church planters. They have two children, Nathan and Juliana.

Alum pays tribute to fallen Air Force comrade By Major Bryce Dibble
M
y name is Major Matthew Bryce Dibble, and I am a proud 2002 graduate of the great CSU. CSU has been a steppingstone for providing me with all of the opportunities to succeed and put me where I am today. The Christian environment is what sets CSU apart from everyone else, and I am thankful for that. As a member of the ROTC program, I received my commission from CSU and have been a part of something truly incredible in the years since my graduation. I have had the opportunity to serve my country all over the world and defend our great nation in Operations IRAQI FREEDOM, ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN. I am currently deployed overseas, and when I arrived to my forward operating base, I received news from my fellow CSU ROTC grads that we lost a true patriot, mentor and member of our CSU ROTC 2001 graduating class. Major Walter David Gray (David) was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device while serving as an Air Liaison Officer in Afghanistan on Aug. 8, 2012. Major Gray was a strong Christian and loved the values that CSU so strongly instills in each of its students. He touched so many lives in the short time he graced us with his presence. Although David and I let time get between us, his impact on not only my life but countless others cannot be forgotten. I was fortunate to know David in two critical stages in my life. Major Gray and I joined the
Air Force as enlisted men back in 1993. This is where I first met this great man. Out of hundreds of thousands of Airmen that go through basic training, I was lucky enough to have him in my class! If you ever met David, you would know his smile was contagious, and even in the worst conditions of a training instructor’s rage, he would cheer you up, pick you up and let you know that we were going to get through this … his leadership even as a young man was beyond his years. Again, time got in the way, and I lost touch with David, until I enrolled in

CSU’s ROTC program in 2000 and to my astonishment, I was again reunited with the infamous David Gray smile. It amazes me how small the world actually is and how the most influential people in your life always end up back in it. As I mentioned above, David has touched so many lives … it is hard to express how he did it. He genuinely loved and cared for everyone. He didn’t see bad in anyone and made the people around him better. David’s calling way back in 1993 was to serve in the military. His dream came true and will be with him forever. He
was a true leader, strong Christian and an example of the CSU vision. I write to you as I represent many of my fellow CSU ROTC alumni who wish to ask CSU to help continue his memory and legacy. As a group we are interested in honoring David and want to know how we can do that through CSU. We owe it to him as many of our memories of CSU involve David’s encouragement, leadership and love for God. We loved him very much, and our prayers are with his wife and young children he has left behind.

Alums inspire students at opening Chapel By Jan Joslin
T
wo alumni who are demonstrating faith in the workplace kicked off the first Chapel service of the academic year. Another alumnus was remembered for his ultimate sacrifice. During the service, the University paid tribute to Major Walter David Gray, a 2001 graduate, and an air liaison officer in the U.S. Air Force. Gray was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan Aug. 8. As part of the tribute, a letter from classmate, Major Matthew Bryce Dibble ’02, was read. Dibble told of a young man with an infectious smile and leadership abilities beyond his years. “He genuinely loved and cared for everyone,” Dibble said. “He made the people around him better.” Excerpts were read from the eulogy Gray’s wife, Heather ’02, delivered at his funeral. Ashleigh Dockery and Dr. Kenneth Wilson challenged and encouraged students with their stories of working in the public sector. Dockery ’10 is a crime scene investigator with the Charleston Police Department. She is cur-
rently enrolled in the University’s criminal justice master’s program. She said, “It wasn’t until sophomore year in a criminal justice elective class that I knew what career I wanted to pursue. The class was titled Techniques of Criminal Justice, and from that moment on I had a goal. I sat in the very back of the classroom, hardly ever spoke up because I was too shy, and an underclassman when the majority of students were upperclassmen. But I poured over the textbook, proudly displaying pictures of autopsies and blood spatter to my parents – who told me to put the book away, and that I wasn’t to show death scenes at dinner.” Dockery’s passion for her calling and living out her faith has not dimmed in the day-to-day reality of crime scenes. “God has given me an opportunity to act out my faith when I am limited in what I may say,” said Dockery. “I have the ability to search for those who have hurt others and to be the voice for those who can no
longer speak for themselves. My faith influences my job in how I interact with others on and off scene.” Wilson, the director of high school education for Dorchester District Two, graduated from CSU in 1990. He told students about accepting Christ while he was a student after a Gospel Choir rehearsal one night. He and his wife, Carol Reid Wilson ’04, met in college and have been married 20 years. Wilson said, “In my work, I am involved in decisions that affect thousands of children, their families and employees throughout the district. Many of these decisions require the weighing of pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages. These are the decisions that call for much prayer—prayer that you are making the right decision that will bring about a positive change in the lives of children and their families. This is where my faith comes into action as I both believe and trust in God that the decision made will benefit the children of the district.”

atie LaRue ’03 was a featured guest on Katie Couric’s new show Sept. 11. LaRue was invited to the show after producers found her in a random computer search for people with the name Katie. LaRue, a former Buccaneer basketball player, recovered from a bicycle accident during college and taught herself to play the guitar as part of her recovery. In addition to her singing and songwriting, LaRue is the girl’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania.
