Beyond the Beach Program > NEW!

Get advice on navigating the real world after graduation! Designed for recent alumni but open to all, Beyond the Beach provides guidance on major career and life choices. The series will be launched during Homecoming on Nov. 15. All sessions will be complimentary for alumni. Read more on page 11. President’s Message To reflect the positive changes at Cal State Long Beach, we’ve redesigned our members’ publication with a more contemporary look. But the goal is the same: to engage our 40,000-plus members with Cal State Long Beach, serve as advocates and enhance our students’ educational experience. The student experience will also be more meaningful when they can better connect with us through activities at the future Anna W. Ngai Alumni Center. We want to thank our many members who responded to our e-survey, of which a few are featured on pages 7-9. You may recognize former classmates! If you have a moment, send your thoughts on this redesigned publication to alumni@csulb.edu. Thank you again! GO BEACH! Kathy Bazarian ’72 President, CSULB Alumni Association

Getting to Know President Jane Close Conoley A Warm Welcome from Alumni Association President Kathy Bazarian

Left: Kathy Bazarian chats with Jane Close Conoley, Cal State Long Beach’s new president.

I

am pleased to introduce Jane Close Conoley, Cal State Long Beach’s seventh president and first permanent female president. Prior to assuming this role, she was the interim chancellor of the University of California, Riverside. I had the pleasure of meeting her on campus to chat about how alumni can support her vision. President Conoley also shared some fun facts about herself. Kathy: How can alumni support your vision of CSULB? Jane: Alums are the evidence of our value and excellence. The best thing they can do is be involved with our campus. Come to games; mentor students; connect us to political, business and philanthropic networks; give us advice on how to improve; and support the next generation of students. Alumni success is the biggest part of our story. At every opportunity, hire new Beach graduates if you are a business owner; offer to present to student organizations about your path after graduation; and, most importantly, brag to your friends about The Beach. Your success and advocacy are critical to our success. Kathy: What are you looking forward to most about being in Long Beach? Jane: I am looking forward to being part of the process of promoting student success. We offer a great education for the lowest possible price to the next generation of Californians. A college degree changes whole families. It’s the American dream in action.

Presidential Fun Facts ≥ Favorite animal Being married to a guy named Collie, the answer must be obvious! We had dogs, cats, hamsters, turtles, fish and birds as our children grew up. Right now, I like seeing the sea mammals, especially dolphins, swim near the shore and the pelicans fly in formation low over the ocean.

≥ Favorite food Collie and I don’t eat meat, but we both love well-prepared seafood. I especially like spicy food like blackened fish, hot Indian food and anything Mexican.

≥ Ideal vacation spot Paris.

≥ Favorite book Wow, that’s hard. I read all the time. I love science fiction, biographies and mysteries. To read more about President Conoley’s impressive academic and professional background, visit the Office of the President’s website at www.csulb.edu/president.
