Hello, I am happy to share with you selected highlights of our media coverage about the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, the UMD School of Music (SOM) and the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) from Spring Semester, 2013. Strong

media coverage helps spread the word about the role the Center and the performing arts

schools play in expanding global partnerships, exploring new ideas through commissioning and performing arts research, using technology to develop projects, and engaging with

members of the campus and community. The creative work we do in the Center also plays an important role in moving the University of Maryland toward its strategic goals.

Spring Semester 2013 opened with the 30TH ANNUAL CHOREOGRAPHERS’ SHOWCASE, followed closely by a collaboration between LAURIE ANDERSON and KRONOS QUARTET in a world premiere performance commissioned in part by the Clarice Smith Center.

The School of Music’s remarkable Les ILLumInatIons with its multimedia spectacle was a highpoint of the semester. The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies showcased its acting talents as well as its lighting, costume and scenic design skills in presentations of DeaD man’s CeLL Phone and FestIvaL oF new works.

This spring we also announced our role in THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR project, a multi-city,

multi-year collaboration among four universities and five performing arts organizations to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. The groundbreaking project includes the commissioning of original works and the creation of new arts-integrated academic programs that examine the Civil War.

All of these performances and events attract important arts reporters like

the washIngton Post’s Anne Midgette and the BaLtImore sun’s Tim Smith,

respected voices in the performing arts community, and result in coverage of the people, performances and programs at SOM, TDPS and the Center. This coverage increases

awareness, supports recruitment of students and helps transforms lives through sustained engagement with the arts.

I hope you will browse through this summary and enjoy the stories. We hope to welcome you to one of our performances at the Center soon, and we thank you again for your continued support of the performing arts here at University of Maryland. Sincerely, Susie Farr CLARICE SMITH PERFORMING ARTS CENTER . SPRING 2013 . claricesmithcenter.umd.edu 3
