The Spring/ Summer 2012 issue of Promenade taps into the biggest trend of the season – colour blocking. We have got on board Nida Mahmood, Delhi’s young and eclectic designer, to turn celebrity fashion stylist for us

hese are exciting times at DLF Promenade. Having received an overwhelming response for the first issue of Promenade, we are now moving ahead. Welcoming Spring/Summer 2012, this issue is all about a splash of colour. Designer Nida Mehmood taps into the biggest trend of this season – Colour Blocking – through her young and eclectic sense of style. Follow our Fashion Feature to find out Nida’s take on Colour Blocking and pick some great cues on how to add colour to your wardrobe.

She plays around with colours, textures and silhouettes for a look that spells glamour, style and a sense of everyday comfort, and effectively captures the mood and the look of spring.

Promenade will also take you through some of the other big trends to sport this season along with some fabulous buys available in the mall right this minute.

While that’s all good, for those who carry their knowledge easy but consider their day well-planned once they know what to wear, this is about clothes. The new look is about outfits that last the day, look glamorous but not glitzy and showcase you at your working best. It also means heels which are comfortable, no matter how high they are.

It’s over. This year, the biggest statement on many catwalks has been minimalist colours. Look at your next door neighbour who keenly watches styles like your mom watches soaps. When you’re buying a shoe, check the heel – clogs, wedges, tennis balls, jewels, twists and turns – there is a lot of action under your sole.

6. Laptop bags When the neighbourhood street vendor starts stocking them, you know the trend has come and gone. The good news is that laptop bags have graduated from fashion experimentation to practicality. Not only can you sling one on your back but you can also choose stylish sleeves which are easy to handle, or you can get a handbag which can look smart and hold

8. We like f lawsome Earlier this year, trendspotting.com gave us a word: flawsome. Think Rahul Gandhi after UP elections, think the biggest five-star hotel after a negative online review, think empathy, generosity and transparency.

The Japanese ethic of wabi-sabi or the celebration of imperfection is one answer. Go asymmetrical or wear mismatched earrings. A sense of humour rather than stuffiness will take a brand a long way. Like they said, if a GM of a five-star hotel can come online after a guest complains of mosquitoes and leaves a thoughtful reply, readers will be forgiving.

9. Hair accessories Butterflies, barrette, bananas, bobby pins and u-clips – hair accessories are back like never before. Expect deals, mix-matched colours and styles in a mixed bag. 13. Baby names Yes, name them by your initials. After the nation heaved a collective sigh at the rumours that Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s daughter is called Abhilasha, the name Aaradhya has brought back unusual and long baby names, all beginning with ‘A’. But as India gets more multinational, don’t be surprised to see parents testing the name on expat colleagues.

14. Baby bumps Vidya Balan – everything she touches, multiplies. While India is still smitten by Silk, she moved on to playing an NRI mom-to-be on the mean streets of Kolkata, making baby bumps fashionable. We have had long months of Lara Dutta sporting one, quite fashionably, followed by Shilpa Shetty’s sudden love for salwar-kameezes. No thanks to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for this one – she hid hers very well, even if mostly it meant she stayed in hiding.

15. Very local Have you had nachni bread, ragi muffins or jowar chips? Of course, it’s fashionable to worry about organic food. But that is so last season. Now you must also find it in your head and heart to think of the farmer. And the carbon footprint that you leave when someone imports food grains for your consumption. If you didn’t care, you will, since chefs from India are learning to be local.

11. Married and alternate Marriages are back in vogue. Our television is celebrating all sorts of them – widow remarriage, second marriage, child marriage and everything in between. The era of the mother-in-law is not over, but certainly husbands are getting more footage. With Sakshi Tanwar flaunting a mangalsutra and not much else, married love is back, too.

12. Tribal, ethnic Ethnic in 2012 is not about jhumkas and bindiya. In a step forward from personalisation, Indians are now rediscovering the cool quotient in tribal wear. Good thing is that armed with Craftmark, Handloommark and Silkmark, the weavers and designers are focussing on presenting styles which are perfect for the global village. So scarves from Bhagalpur and tunics from Lucknow with prints and colours that are perfect for many tastes are all being seen and not just among the jhola clad.

Indian authors are delving deep into myth and legend and presenting souped up versions. The latest in news in Ashok Banker’s retelling of the Mahabharata, which followed close on the heels of two of Amish Tripathi’s Shiv trilogy.

What compelled you to write the book?

The discovery of my grandmother’s diaries in a second-hand bookshop came as a big surprise and also triggered the drive in me to write about it. A stranger had put the genealogy on its cover and that’s how it landed with me. I also realised that the centenary of the Delhi Durbar of 1911, where King George V was proclaimed emperor before the Indian masses, was approaching. The book was published to commemorate the grand event. I always had the photographs, which she had clicked during her visit to India and maintained in an album.

It took me 18 months to complete the book.

Particularly, last year was intense.

So how did your grandmother Lilah Wingfield get to attend the Royal Durbar?

She had a wild, independent and wonderfully Irish upbringing, until her father Mervyn Wingfield, the 7th Viscount Powerscourt died in 1904. After that, her brother Mervyn

Wingfield, the 8th Viscount Powerscourt was made the heir and she had to leave their home in Powerscourt along with her mother and siblings. As a 16-year-old, London reflected a restricted, Edwardian lifestyle, where she was chaperoned to every event. It was a narrow life for young Lilah. At 23, when she received the invite through her brother, it was her ticket to freedom. Her mother Julia was a disciplinarian and agreed to her trip only if two chaperones accompanied her.

When you read through her diary, did her personality came across as very different from what you had perceived in your personal life?

I was impressed by her writing. Earlier, I didn’t see her as a particularly brilliant person but as somebody who was very emotional. When I read through the pages documenting her journey, it was a very calm, measured and good writing.

What was the most interesting bit of her entire experience?

Her friendship with the Begum of Bhopal led her escape from the British way of life into the lives of Indians. She had travelled so far to see and experience the real India and not the British in India. After the Durbar, she stayed with the Begum for about 10 days. She developed a close friendship with Prince Obaidullah, the son of the Begum of Bhopal, who took her to picnics and sight-seeing, and later became infatuated with her.

Apart from your grandmother’s experience, does the book have a strong historical context?

I did a lot of research in all the big libraries on that period in Indian history and also travelled to Delhi and Jodhpur, where the real hard work was done in collecting relevant information. It was interesting for me as a writer to bring the historical context of the 1911 way of life. The

creation of the imposing tented city complete with its own farms, railways, telegraph and post offices, which was erected in just two weeks with much cleverness and efficiency, fascinated me. It was a brilliant joint venture between the Indians and the British.

When I read through my grandmother’s

account of the Durbar, I fell in love with all the maharajas who attended it. They were extraordinary. The Begum of Bhopal, who was a very clever ruler, was also intriguing to me, but she was in purdah all the time… which is not a good thing. Well, the Maharaja of Udaipur was the most impressive. He stood by his principles and did not bow to the Emperor during his coronation, like other maharajas.

It was a brave thing to shake him by the hand and go home.

he two Delhi boys, sarod players Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash are back with a solo album which explores Sufism and Sufi music. Rang – Colors of Sufism was launched by director Karan Johar, who described the duo as “the youth icons in the musical industry”. He says, “I liked the album, the way they have played the sarod, composed the music and presented the song. Every year, there is more and more demand for Sufi music, but through Amaan and Ayaan, if the music reaches the people, the impact is much larger and greater.”

The album is a confluence of six tracks: ‘Mann Kunto Maula’, ‘Aaj Rang Hai’, ‘Bahaut Din Beete’, ‘Main Nizaam’, ‘Zihale Miskin’ and ‘Kaahe Ko Byaahe Bides’. The sarod duo reinterprets most old Sufi poetry like ‘Mann Kunto Maula’ in new ways.

“We were always inclined to Sufi music. We wanted to take it to the lounge space… already much work is being done on Sufi music on a broader scale,” says Amaan. “But we wanted to take it to lounge space and get rustic singers do justice to the music.”

Director: Sajid Khan Cast: The dirty dozen, including Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Asin and Jacqueline Fernandez Khan is known for his bawdy sense of comedy. The film, about four angry conmen, will have you rolling in the aisle, or so the director promises. The four marry superhot women and have four father-in-laws to deal with. Confused?

That’s how Khan derives his laughs – his largely situational comedies are high on repartee, facial expressions and ridiculous situations. Watch it if you are looking for a fun experience, without getting much in terms of good cinema. Especially recommended for Akshay’s incredible sense of comic timing.

Music director: Jeet A quintessential Bhatt film has lovely music. Blood Money, however, has not created the storm that most of their other movies manage. The comeback album of composer Jeet (of Jeet-Pritam fame) focuses on seven rehashed Bengali rock tracks including special compositions by Sangeeth Haldipur and Pranay. Considering the winning musical aesthetic of Bhatt’s movies, the album is credited with talented vocals of Mustafa Zahid and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

From the soulful and classically synchronised voice of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in ‘Chaahat’ that can best be described as Sufi-rock, to the rather gloomy ‘Gunaah’, with a metal base, there is much to listen to.

In ‘Gunaah’, guitar riffs blend with the series of mellowed piano drills, mandolin and violin notes.

The winning streak is hit by ‘Jo Tere Sang’, in which the composer has moved away from the Sufi-rock inspiration to hard metal. — RS

Band: Cranberries Cranberries lovers have waited for this album for about eight years now.

Originally planned for release during 2004, the recorded tracks for the album ‘Roses’ by the Cranberries were shelved after the band split up.

So, Roses is their first studio release in ten years. ‘So Good’ and ‘Schizophrenic Playboys’ are most likely to become hits. ‘So Good’ will tug at your heartstrings, while Schizophrenic Playboys will have you overcome with nostalgia as Dolores O’Riordan voice takes you back to the day when the band’s hit ‘Zombie’ played everywhere. ‘Conduct’ is full of soul and so is ‘Raining in My heart’, which is very catchy.

‘Waiting in Walthamstow’ and ‘Fire & Soul’ break away from the

hardly-gentle style of music that The Cranberries is most famous for.

‘Show Me the Way’ and ‘Roses’, on the other hand, are a little too slow and slightly monotonous. ‘Tomorrow’s upbeat tune’ is a happy reminder of ‘Just My Imagination’ and ‘Losing My Mind’s’ first-slowthen-powerful pace reminds me of ‘Linger’.

Tomahawk Technique

Musician: Seal Paul Like almost every Sean Paul track, ‘Got 2 luv U’ has probably been buzzing in your ears since its release last year.

Much of Sean Paul’s fifth studio album, Tomahawk Technique promises to have just the same “right tactics to turn you on”.

‘She Doesn’t Mind’ has the potential to get you winding and grinding within 10 seconds from its start, as does ‘Dream Girl’, which could well become the next big clublove-song. ‘Body’ is good for grooving and while it might not get you to the dance floor right away, it has great potential to grow on people.

‘Won’t Stop’ breaks away from Sean Paul’s style, and is too slow.

It sadly lacks the soul that Sean Paul brought to ‘Hold My Hand’ in his last album Imperial Blaze. When you hear the beat dropping in ‘Hold On and Put It On You’ and a bonus track by Tal, featuring Sean Paul, you just know that these are probably going to become club hits.

Being the namesake of Bee Gees hit, ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ featuring Kelly Rowland commands great expectations and meets them, too — top-of-the-charts potential.

Paul appears to have given in to mixing in techno/house beats in ‘Touch The Sky’ featuring DJ Ammo and does well with it. ‘Roll With Di Don’ is the only song in the album that comes close to being as scorching hot as Paul’s early hits like ‘Get Busy’, ‘Temperature’ and ‘We Be Burning’. The hottest movie to release this summer combines a beautiful love story with cutting-edge technology

he biggest movie to hit movie theatres this summer is James Cameron’s iconic hit, Titanic, but in the 3D form. The amazing, three-dimensional reconstruction of the famous but ill-fortuned ship that sank on its maiden voyage 100 years ago, will once again have Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet serenade you.

The movie is a faithful, three-dimensional recreation of the centuryold ship…with the addition of state-of-the-art technology.

Titanic, for its time, was actually a technically advanced film. Many of the interior and exterior shots were completely computer-generated, as was much of the water. That offered the animators better options while re-processing the film for 3D because were artists are working with digital imagery instead of live scenes. “Titanic 3D cranks up the experience of watching the movie,” says Cameron. “The 3D enriches all of Titanic’s most thrilling moments and its most emotional moments.

More than ever, you feel you’re right there going through all the jeopardy that Jack and Rose go through.”

Much has obviously changed since Cameron’s epic movie premiered in 1997 and on VHS in 1998; now, it is the 2012 digitally remastered release of Titanic 3D.

Director: Priyadarshan Cast: Mohanlal, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Boman Irani, Kangana Ranaut, Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan Tezz’s biggest claim to fame is its action sequences. The stunts, reportedly, is choreographed by Gareth Milne, the stunt coordinator of Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

The movie’s biggest USP is its actors, the biggest action heroes this side of the Atlantic, from Mohanlal to Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn. See it, if action cinema sends you in a frenzy.

Director: Kunal Deshmukh Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Imran Zahid and Esha Gupta After The Dirty Picture, Emraan Hashmi is a huge star. He has been delivering box office worthy performances for the past couple of years, but this is the first time that both the masses and the classes, the critics and the fans, have doffed their hat to this consummate performer. So much so that Hashmi now is finding the best of directors – from Yash Chopra to Dibakar Banerjee wanting to work with him. For this one, however, Hashmi returns to the Bhatt camp, who backed him when not many believed in his star power. The movie focuses on Delhi’s illegal arms trade, and is about a cop and his snitch.

The Making of the Colour Extravaganza

The mood on the location of our Spring/Summer 2012 shoot was electric – clothes laid out in a mélange of colours, styles and patterns, in a happy mix of bohemian fashion.

While Nida Mahmood, the designer who doubled up as our celebrity stylist, dextrally put the looks together, Manish Mandanna, our fashion photographer pushed us to get the models to change quickly to catch the fading light. In between the chaos, we produced a fashion shoot that speaks style, glamour, colour and vibrancy.

Expect to see a complete guide on how to wear a crop top, sleeve tattoos and the day’s most popular photo shoot. It’s so structured, it’s a magazine.

n the road in a Mumbai suburb is an autorickshaw – pink hood, yellow body with a leaf green trim on wheel guards. On the pages of the lookbook of a fashion brand is a model striking a pose in a pink jacket, yellow top and leaf green trousers.

You can trust fashion blogger Manou Tyagi of wearabout.com to not only notice the similarities but to put a photo of the two on his blog.

He says, “Anything that I think is important for the sake of documentation or would make sense later if not now,” is his mantra for selecting posts.

Calling himself “a photographer documenting streets and fashion in India,” Tyagi, the blogger is no more and no less than that. Staying far away from ramps and first rows, he will, through diligent application of his eye, be the first to know if a skirt on a fashionista is made of the same material as the cover on a suitcase spotted at a railway station.

Tyagi is one of the fashion bloggers gaining prominence in India with his news, views and trend reports on the fashion industry. Schoolgirl blogger, Arushi Khosla of Bohemianlikeyou.com confesses to being clubbed with the media and gets invited to not only the Lakmé Fashion Week and Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week in India, but also to some events in New York, since she has readers there. If nothing else, she is certainly a shopper of the products she is talking about. Pune-based software engineer and fashion blogger Smrithi Rao of vintage-obsession.com has to give invites flooding her inbox a miss because she has a day job.

The need to connect and comment has been the starting point but as with all writing, content is king. Blog how-tos are full of information on how to increase readers and make an impression. Ironically, the best and the most popular ones remain focussed on their voice.

Rao, whose latest update, Geometrify, documents local inspiration on wearing ikat style textiles, says, “I haven’t done anything aiming particularly at increasing readership because I have always thought if people identified with me, they will read and come back again. There is no point forcing me or my blog on somebody.”

While she got hooked to blogging after a surge of attention thanks to an article in a magazine, Tehelka, three months after she launched the blog, initially it was the projects that got her readers. “Initially I took up a lot of DIY projects like, for example, I made a pair of suspenders from suitcase straps. Most of my DIY projects went viral and a lot of people got hooked on to the blog because of that. I was called ‘the DIY Queen’ in a publication – my favourite title,” she says.

runway reviews because I was interested in articulating my opinions on the mélange of clothing we see every September, but I quickly realised that why would someone want to read a review by a 14-year-old, when they could be reading The New York Times piece by Cathy Horyn? So, I started experimenting and playing around with personal style posts interspersed with the occasional opinion piece. That’s the model I follow for the most part now.”

The turning point for bohemianlikeyou. com came when she wrote an impassioned defence of fashion in a response to what she calls a “demeaning and unfounded piece” in The Guardian.

Khosla’s blog is all that she says – you can read about how she is not blogging because of her board or pre-board exams and surprisingly educated details of what make-up she uses and why. Brands as varied as Revlon, Chanel, Sephora, Kerastase and Fekkai find mentions on her pages.

While Tyagi is all about observing the world, Khosla comes as an articulate young lady with strong opinions, which she backs with information and facts. Rao is a healthy mix of personal style and observation.

After some research about the company, I found out that their products were tested on animals. I decided to stay clear.”

Tyagi says, “Blogging is not a job for me.

I’ve only been working on my blog for the last two years but there is no concept of fulltime as such, despite the pressure of blogging every day. I blog very irregularly, but yes, it’s the only medium I make money through. I get paid for collaborations and other projects that I get through my blog and I don’t advertise on it.”

Invitations to events, freebies, promotions and being paid to write for other publications are some of the perks, but the bottom-line is that fashion blogging is fun. Khosla says, “It’s absolutely not my full-time job. I am graduating from high school this month and hope to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York next, and work in luxury marketing. I will continue to blog because it has opened countless valuable doors for me and helped me forge priceless connections, while being really fun, but it’s definitely not something I see myself doing as a sole day job.”

op Art, which literally means popular art, was a movement in the 1950s to bring art back into everyday life. Pop artists considered conceptual and elitist painting too refined and instead dervived inspiration from everyday life, and the colours and graphic images they saw on the streets.

Somewhere down the line, pop art transformed from a serious art form to an adoration of bright lights and synthetic colours, which today finds reference in fashion, where it lends humour and satire to clothes, shoes and accessories.

Rewind to the ’60s, the period when the original pop art fashion movement defied the supremacy of haute couture and status dressing, resulting in a creative retort to abstract art. Pop Art eventually overlapped with the youth and pop music phenomenon of the 1960s and became an intrinsic part of the trendy Swinging London.

The 2012 fashion trends are obviously referencing the 1960s.

Designer Anuja Mukim says, “Pop Art is bright, bold, bizarre, exaggerated and splayed — everything to get you noticed. How could it not influence fashion?” While earlier it was for a cause of bringing art to the masses, today it is a casual, fun way of dressing, a sort of flippant attitude towards fashion. In India, the king of kitsch is obviously Manish Arora, who has a cheeky ‘ladies tailor’ tattooed on his left arm and mixes colours like an Indian chef would mix spices in a frying pan. However, several high street brands are also referencing the 1960s and mixing colours and graphic prints in some sort of pop art revival.

Pop art poster boy of the pop art movement, once said, “Art is what you can get away with”. His words seem prophetic going by the pop art influences that are creeping on to the radar of Indian fashion. The glam ’60s are back but in a more individualistic manner. Graphic designer Nidhi Chopra of Pop Goes the Art says, “Pop fashion can be a remix of anything in your wardrobe that is either funky or bold. What I love most about pop fashion is that it is highly individualistic.”

Here are some easy ways of bringing a piece of ‘Swinging London’ to your wardrobe.

Colour me pop

In the world of pop fashion, colour is clearly the official black. Let the sunlight enter your summer wardrobe with bright pops of colours. “Pop Art is a very colourful and vibrant art form.

It lends itself extremely well to fashion, as brands can play around with colours,” says Chopra. A pair of bright-coloured denim with a tucked-in white shirt is always a great wardrobe hit. Fabindia, among the country’s biggest high-street brands that started out as a little co-operative to help India’s talented weavers to find a market, is famous for its kurtas, tunics and tops designed using exclusive handwoven and hand-printed fabrics.

Kumar often borrows inspiration from the closets of erstwhile begums while designing kurtas in anarkali or angrakha silhouettes. “When it comes to depicting royal fashion, nothing spells chic better than a voluminous anarkali suit. It’s an evergreen silhouette and also one of the most celebrated ones this season,” says designer Amrish Kumar of LABEL by Ritu Kumar, which has some of the most gorgeous pieces on the shelves.

Kumar’s high-end prêt collection is bold and sexy with chic metallic accentuations. The intrepid feel of the collection is contrasted with the sense of romanticism that flows through it; a reflection of the new age woman, the collection speaks of a spirited lady, who exudes femininity. Structured dresses are a major part of this collection, and the fabrics range from soft and

areena Kapoor is leaning against her vanity van in a Mumbai film studio, her shoulders slumped, her slim figure clad in a flowing red gown. Her boyfriend, actor Saif Ali Khan is standing next to her, animatedly speaking with her. What are they discussing? Perhaps, the pair of sexy boots that he just got her? Or, perhaps, a movie they are considering together?

Her porcelain face does not betray what she is thinking. “She has the attitude of a natural born star,” says a photographer who is hanging around to do some pictures. “She looks through you most times unless, of course, she wants to talk to you.” ‘ For Kareena, life beyond movies is unfathomable. Considered among the most stylish women in India, the actress says she loves “dressing up”.

She’s obviously worked those inches off. By all accounts, Kareena is in the best shape today. “My trainer, Yasmin Karachiwala, has designed a fitness programme that combines weight training, power yoga and pilates. We train every day. It’s weights one day, and yoga and pilates the next.

Yasmin has seen me from my fattest to my skinniest.”

“But I also wear nice looking kurtas with jeans. I like colour in my wardrobe --- orange, pink, turquoise, the more vibrant, the better.”

I take good care of my skin and wash my face at least four or five times a day. After that, I apply a moisturiser. On most days, I just put on a hint of lipstick and dash of eyeliner when I am going out.”

On style Like the ultra-thin Victoria Beckham, whom Kareena admires, the actress is considered the ultimate style icon. Look at her old pictures – once, she almost always wore kurtis with jeans or salwar kameezes, even to the most high profile 4 events. Now, it is about glamorous gowns, beautiful watches, Hermès Birkin bags and sequinned saris. “I like Posh Spice’s look and style,” she admits. “I like that lean body and the chiselled face. She has got style and she’s got the attitude.” Kareena often combines high street brands, like Zara, among her favourite, with her haute couture pieces.

“I dress for comfort at most times, but when I am stepping out and know all eyes will be on me, I make sure that I am dressed well,” she says.

On the days when she is just lounging at home or lunching with her girlfriends, Kareena wears her all-time favourite faded blue denims. “I am so fond of my old jeans that when I do pick up a new pair, I store them in my closet for a few years, or at least till I feel that they are old enough to wear.”

On cinema Among one of the biggest actors in India, she, along with Vidya Balan, commands a over ` 2 crore pay packet for each film. “I charge what I deserve,” says Kareena. “When you sign me you get glamour and performance.”

Though she comes from a film family, the actress says she had to struggle a bit to get where she is today. “You think only girls, who come from outside Mumbai to make it big in the industry, have to struggle for their existence? Remember all those times when my films flopped and everyone wrote me off? There is this constant pressure to deliver. People love underdogs who make it big, but I hope they understand that it’s not easy for star kids.”

On Delhi’s style quotient “It is interesting in its own sort of way, though not experimental. Women really dress well in Delhi,” she says, “especially the younger girls, who have the body and the attitude. I find a lot of interesting styles flaunted on the streets of south Delhi.”

How thin is too thin Over the past year, Kareena has gone from her previous size zero to a rather respectable size now, though she is obviously much slimmer then what she was when she first started out in the movies. “I have been working on putting on some weight,” she says. “I am a Punjabi girl, I like my food. Now, I am a size 4. I think the weight loss suits me. My features stand out sharper, especially in photographs.”

Romain said “just bring your motivation”, when I asked if I should get anything along with me and my labour. I had offered to volunteer on the farm and help with the million little chores of an agrarian life, in

exchange of staying with his family and being familiarised with the cultural life of France. He came to pick me up at Belleville-sur-Saône, young Jo Anatole (10 months) in tow, and we made our way in a rustic Renault trailer to the vineyards. Romain spoke good English peppered with common French phrases — having spent a significant time abroad in places as varied as Brazil and Nepal — and we drove over the mild undulations of the Beaujolais countryside. The yellows, the browns and the crimsons of autumn were all sprayed over the leaves of the vines, and with the breeze sending them into feverish flaps, a veritable dynamism swept over the whole countryside. In 20 minutes we were at the maison, where he lives with his artist wife Perrine and three children, Shankar (12), Samjhana (10) and Tabajara (9) — not present for the weekend — from an earlier marriage. Perrine had a successful career in installations and mixed media in Brussels, and her pieces adorned the kitchen and other spaces. There was another visitor, Marc, who was doing a stage (apprenticeship) with Romain, while being enrolled for agronomy classes at a university in Toulouse in the south.

Beaujolais Farm

very November, a great excitement marks the arrival of the Beaujolais nouveau (the same year’s vintage). In the Rhone-Alpes region, which contains part of the Beaujolais geographic area besides Bourgogne, restaurants proclaim this novelty aloud and people sit for hours over pots of local wine. Made from a single grape Gamay, and engineered to ferment in a quick cycle, winemaking in Beaujolais is a series of rituals and time-tested techniques, which need to be observed at a close distance to really appreciate the passion that goes into the metamorphosis of fruit into liquor. I thought of this as I called Romain, a ninth-generation vintner, to spend a weekend at his farm around an hour’s drive from the nearest city of Lyon.

A stay with a vintner’s family at a vineyard in the achingly beautiful region of Rhône, leaves me with a heady feeling after being treated to endless glasses of wine, organically grown food and lots of good conversation

Ready Reckoner How to get there: Domaine des Grottes is around 65kms from the nearest airport (Lyon St. Exupéry) and around 10kms from the nearest train station (Belleville-sur-Saône).

The airport is connected to most major European destinations, though there is limited connectivity with other parts of the world. For Indians flying out of New Delhi or Mumbai, changing at Brussels or London might be a better option.

From Lyon, the administrative capital of Rhone-Alpes region, it takes about half an hour by train to arrive in Belleville-sur-Saône.

You can pre-arrange the formalities of your arrival, and Romain can pick you up from the train station in his trailer.

Perrine and Romain believe in the principles of bio-dynamic agriculture, which is a method of organic farming that follows a holistic approach to land and its replenishment, and often includes rituals that border on the mystical or the occult. Based on the teachings of Rudolph Steiner, they are a growing community of farmers who are seeking to break out of the traditional mould of winemaking towards a more rooted approach to reaping the fruits of the earth. Indeed, Romain is hardly embarrassed in admitting that his yield is perhaps the lowest among the surrounding farmers because he refuses to use the chemical weed killers that make mobility easier within the rows of the vines. He jokes how the hunters looking for pheasants often end up in his vines as the shelter of grass makes it very attractive for the game birds.

We had a breakfast of good bread from a baker in a nearby village, a man who is as passionate about his boulangerie as this household is about wine, and set off in the trailer in our work boots. The first morning’s agenda included planting tubes around the young vines to give the little creepers some support, and also planting new saplings that would hopefully sleep over and survive the winter. Marc insisted, relaying Romain’s advice, not to break the leaves of the plants as they are enclosed in the plastic cylinder. It was evident that for these bunch of agriculturists, grapes are not merely something to press for profit, but a gift to harbour and reflect their hard-cultivated expertise.

In the evening, we dabbled in a different world. Romain had the wonderful idea, borrowing from Steiner, of spraying a cow dung emulsion onto his fields. For one hour, Marc and me whipped up whirlpools in oak casks, trying to make the dark chunks of excrement dissolve in the agitated water. Romain assured me this is not conventional practice.

However, the use of cow dung as compost is not unknown to farmers in the countryside.

The weekend supper

Perrine and Romain generally abstain from meat, but Saturday night was a different affair. While Romain amused himself with the piano and young Jo Anatole fiddled with his toy accordion, Marc had it upon himself to make Gratin Dauphinois. A typical French bake, the easy recipe makes it a legend among students and other young people short of time. At its most elementary, it consists of layers of thin potato slices alternated with garlic chunks and rivers of fresh cream, all topped with generous slivers of a melting cheese such as Emmenthal. It goes brilliantly with a roast, and Perrine bought a couple of poulet (chicken) done with provençal vegetables from a food boutique in a nearby town. All was washed down with a generous supply of this year’s Beaujolais from the house cellar and with Romain’s sister Olga joining in on the mouth organ, and Marc trying his practised hand on the guitar, the melody lit a gentle fire to the night, otherwise in a severe grip of an autumn chill.

Chateau tales

Sunday in these provinces is a day of nothing. Gone are the days when the patriarch would have headed to the nearest church in his best hat.

For everyone who cares about a quality of life, toiling in the sun is slightly out of order. In the morning, I helped Perrine pick young spinach leaves for lunch in the kitchen garden. The cats stretched themselves in the sun, and the hotness of the rays was offset by a piercing, whimsical breeze flowing over the rustling yellows of the landscape. I finished the chicken from the previous night and then we sat for a number of hours talking of

our impressions of the various worlds we have travelled to.

In the early hours of the evening, I accompanied Romain and young Jo Anatole to the family chateau of Lacarelle. One of the biggest landholdings in the area, the chateau is currently owned by Romain’s grandfather whose family took it over in 1750. Romain is one of the 13 farmers working for his grandfather, and the chateau possesses one of those grand old cellars with machinery from the previous centuries.

Even the French Revolution could not offset the luxury these chambers were ensconced in, and Romain recounted a legend of revolutionary authorities, who sold off their land to a third party threatening them with destitution. One of his ancestors had the simple but effective idea of attacking the convoy with the money for the deal. They then bought over the chateau from the same cash. These stone walls have stayed with them ever since.

The next week

A storm had swept over the canvas of the sky by Monday morning. Dark grey bundles hung saturated on the horizon. A bunch of young people had arrived to spend a week in this isolated setting and to discuss profound concepts such as the meaning of life and the nature of strength. Perrine got busy with arranging supper for them. The cats disappeared to some secret warm corner, and waited for the next round of refuse to arrive for them. I helped Romain and Marc with planting some more vines and by the afternoon, as the time for my departure came nearer, we exchanged contacts and reminisced over these three days in the Beaujolais countryside. It was Perrine’s turn to drop me at the administrative capital of Villefranche-sur-Saône. Jo Anatole sat in the back seat of the car as I waved goodbye. Perrine had a long day ahead.

Stay safe: Life on a farm is highly practical and you should expect a certain flexibility in norms of hygiene.

Usually common sense should do the trick. A sturdy pair of shoes is a must. So are comfortable clothes to match the season, and a sleeping bag to keep you warm, should the temperatures dip to freezing extremes.

Most importantly, do not hesitate to ask the owners if you have any concerns, and they shall clear all the doubts for you.

Formalities: Romain and many other organic farmers are registered with the organisation WWOOF France. To access the list of contacts, you need to register on the website (wwoof.fr) and pay the yearly subscription charges of Euro15.

Where to eat: If you should want a change from the food at the farm, take a trip to the restaurant Les Quatre Saisons (Tel: 00 33 4 47 03 53 11) at Belleville. Romain recommends it for the extensive menu, which includes unlimited local wine, and also for the fact that the chef grows his own vegetables. Try some of the regional specialities such as andouilette (a tripe sausage), salade Lyonnaise (poached eggs, lardons, croutons and greens among other ingredients) or the chef’s version of pannacotta.
