Inside Broadcast Journalism
Students, Alumnae, Parents, and Media Professionals gathered at Sacred Heart Greenwich on November 10 to celebrate the work of the Broadcast Journalism program. The keynote speaker was Melanie Bloom P'10,'12,'12,'18, widow of David J. Bloom, who spoke about his legacy lives on in the David J. Bloom Broadcast Studio and program. Alumnae Suzanne Pavese Festa ’80, Erica Jorgensen '04, Kate Rayner Leary '05, and Jackie Batrus '13 spoke personally about how the broadcast program has impacted their lives. "This Broadcast Journalism program is so invaluable. The things I've done since graduating could not have been done without this program. It gave me a phenomenal foundation," said Jackie Batrus '13.
Jackie is currently a senior at Boston College, majoring in Communications and minoring in Environmental Studies. Since graduating from Sacred Heart in 2013, she has interned for Fox News on the "Your World with Neil Cavuto" show, interned for the World Wildlife FundAustralia, and holds an ongoing internship with the documentary making organization, the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). Her roles with these internships have included prepping on-air guests, doing show research, filming, editing, and interviewing. After graduation in the Spring of 2017, Jackie hopes to pursue a career with OPS, in making documentary films. Kate is the morning show breaking news anchor/reporter for NBC Connecticut. She's covered several local and national stories including Hurricane Sandy, the Sandy Hook Shooting, and the Boston Marathon Bombings. She lives in West Hartford, CT with her husband, John.
Erica is a Murrow and Emmy award-winning Investigative Producer. After graduating from Brown University she spent 5 years at WSB-TV, the ABC affiliate in Atlanta, GA. where she conducted extensive database investigations, undercover shoots, political and consumer investigations. She will start her new job as Investigative Content Producer at NBC in New York City this month. Erica will work undercover, producing daily and long-term investigative stories. Suzanne is a Sacred Heart Greenwich alumna, has been a Sacred Heart second grade teacher for 17 years, and is a Sacred Heart past-parent of Lindsey, Class of 2009. Suzanne’s young students have benefited from enriched classroom learning by incorporating broadcast capabilities in different curricular areas. In the personal realm, Suzanne takes great pride in how the Advanced Broadcast Journalism Program impacted her daughter by sparking a passion that resulted a successful and award-winning career in the broadcast industry. Living as a Sacred Heart student in 1964 King Street Chronicle writer Christina Weiler '17 recently spoke with Priscilla Campo Press '70 to find out what life was like as a student in 1964: "Convent of the Sacred Heart alumna Priscilla Press fondly reflects on the comradery,
impeccable academics, and kindness that she experienced during her time as a student at Sacred Heart. Ms. Press cherishes her daily routine at the school in the late 1960s and values the formative experience. Sacred Heart in Greenwich opened in 1945 as a boarding school, nearly a century after the society established Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan. Ms. Press began boarding in Greenwich in 1964 as a seventh grader. At the time, students lived in three residential houses: two cottages named Barat and Stewart, and Duchesne, the main building students know today as Salisbury Hall. NYC Marathon runners Congratulations to all of the Sacred Heart Greenwich alumae who ran the TCS New York City Marathon this year. We heard from Ali Whelan ’08, Kyla Harrington ’09, Emily Hatton ’11, Tara Varbaro ’98, Gloria Lee ’11, Kristin Carey ’09, Katie Gojkovich ’05, Colleen Considine ’08, Dee Miller ’10, Kate Benjamin ’11, Lizzy Walsh ’09 and Alison Mango ’10. Katie wrote in to say that Mackenzie Flight ’05 not only cheered her on in Harlem, but also ran with her throughout much of her training. Kyla and Kristin, who met in the fourth grade at Sacred Heart, ran the entire length of the race together!

Lauren Manning '09: Fighting for rights of girls all over the world Lauren Manning '09 is currently the Campaign Manager for Girl Rising, and, most recently, she has worked on the film campaign We Will Rise: Michelle Obama's Mission to Educate Girls Around the World, which premiered on CNN October 12. At Sacred Heart, Lauren discovered her interests in journalism, communications, international development, and foreign affairs. She was involved in the Barat Foundation, the King Street Chronicle, Perspectives, and the Community Service Club. In addition, Lauren participated in a Network Summer Service Project in New Orleans and also traveled to Lourdes, France with fellow classmates. During the college process, she was drawn to Northwestern University due to its renowned journalism program, mid-sized campus, proximity to both a college town and a major city, and a motivated student body. Lauren majored in journalism with a concentration in magazine writing. Within reporting, she focused on international affairs and human rights. She also received a minor in sociology and a certificate in civic engagement. To read more about Lauren's great work click here.

On October 27, a Halloween Playdate was held in the Barat Center for Early Childhood Education. Alumnae brought their young children to decorate pumpkins and play in the Barat Center. To see more pictures click here.
