2015-2016 Council Program Guide by Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay

It’s time for another Girl Scout membership year!

This year’s Council Program Guide includes programs for girls throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, including the return of popular programs as well as some new offerings. Of special note is the Chesapeake Bay STEM Fest, to be held February 6, 2016 at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, MD. The Punkin Fling and Fall Festival will return in October, this year to Camp Grove Point. One of our largest events, On My Honor: A Celebration of Achievement, will take place in January. Information about the Fall Product Program, Girl Scout Cookie Program, the Capital Campaign and The Bay Shop are also included in this guide. As always, we are partnering with many cultural, environmental and educational organizations throughout the Delmarva Peninsula to develop and offer programming. Some of these offerings have registration through the group providing the program – please make sure to read the program descriptions. In addition to specific programs listed in the guide, many of these organizations are preferred vendors – troop leaders and other volunteers can contact them directly to arrange for programming meeting your troop’s needs. 2015 marks 100 years of the first Girl Scout troop on the Delmarva Peninsula. We wanted to celebrate this anniversary by “resurrecting” GSCB’s longest-running publication of 43 years. Before the social media boom, (or the internet for that matter) The Bay Window served as the main source of council communications to our members. Last but not least, we will be moving during the 2015-16 membership year to the new Northern Resource Center. We’re looking forward to serving many more generations of girls from this new location. Who Can Attend An Event? All girls are invited to attend the events listed in the Council Program Guide. If the girl is not a registered Girl Scout, we simply ask that you go online to www.gscb.org, complete a Membership Registration Form and pay the $15 membership fee and $15 council service fee, in addition to the event cost. You may attend with your troop, bring a friend or just come join the fun with your fellow Girl Scout sisters! To register for programs, please use the Event Registration Form (215-PM) found on page 45 or at www.gscb.org. When filling out your registration form, please be sure to include the name of the event for which you are registering and email to: program@cbgsc.org. Please do not use nicknames and be sure to spell all names correctly. Siblings and Friends Female siblings and friends are welcome to join us if they meet the grade level requirements of the program. If they are not registered Girl Scouts, they will simply need to pay a $15 membership fee and $15 council service fee, in addition to the event cost, and complete the online membership form at www.gscb.org. Please do not bring children who are not within the grade level requirement unless noted in the event description. Boys are welcome to attend events only if specifically noted. Adult/Girl Ratios A minimum of two registered adults (unrelated) must accompany every troop to an event, unless otherwise noted in the event description. Please consult Volunteer Essentials for exact ratio information. Individually registered girls must be accompanied by one adult. When a program specifies that adult attendance is not required, a medical release form and parent permission slip must be provided to the program leader. Our primary goal is to provide quality programming to girls. As a result, there may not be space available above the adult-to-girl ratios. Payment Include full payment with all registrations. We accept troop debit cards, Visa/MasterCard/Discover/American Express credit cards, checks or cash. Checks need to be written in blue or black ink. Please make checks payable to GSCB and include a phone number and driver’s license number on the front of the check. Do not send cash through the mail. Payments will be processed as they arrive to the offices of GSCB. Late Fee Any Event Registration Forms received after the 14 days registration deadline will incur a late fee for EACH participant listed. All event registrations must be date-stamped by the cut-off date. The fee schedule is as follows: Event cost................$0-$10............... fee is $1 per participant Event cost................$11-$20............. fee is $2 per participant Event cost................$21-$40............ fee is $4 per participant Event cost................$41 & over........ fee is $6 per participant Confirmations Once we receive your registration, a receipt will be sent via email (troop leaders will receive confirmation for troop registrations). Confirmations will indicate whether you have been registered for the event are on a waiting list. If a program is not filled by the closing date (14 days prior to the event), it may be cancelled and notifications will be sent via email.

Financial Assistance Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay is grateful to the many individuals, service clubs and businesses for their support of the Financial Assistance program. GSCB also receives funding for financial assistance from the Wilmington Flower Market, the Christmas Tree Shop, the United Fund of Talbot County and the United Ways of Delaware, the Lower Eastern Shore of MD, the Virginia Eastern Shore and Cecil and Kent Counties. Financial Assistance is available for all Girl Scout events unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact GSCB at 800-341-4007. Cancellations and Refunds Events are held rain or shine unless inclement weather would adversely affect the program. In those cases, participants will be notified of cancellation and/or rescheduling of programs. If GSCB cancels an event for any reason or cannot place participants in the event of their choice, GSCB will issue a complete refund of the registration fee. If the minimum number of participants is not met 14 days prior to the program date, unless otherwise noted, the program will be cancelled. Cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing. 30 days written notice is required to receive 50 percent of registration fees of $7.50 or more per individual. No refunds will be issued if less than thirty days written notice is given, unless for medical reasons. Refunds for medical reasons will only be processed if notification is made before the event or within one week following the event, accompanied by a doctor’s note. No refunds will be issued for individuals who do not show up for their scheduled event. The $15 membership and $15 council service fee are non-refundable. Religious Recognitions In addition to our My Promise, My Faith award, religious recognitions are developed and administered by each of the major religious groups. Through Girl Scouting, each girl is encouraged to become a stronger member of her own religion. Girls who choose to participate in one of these programs do so outside the regular troop meetings with a group of girls guided by a spiritual counselor or with their own families. Chesapeake Bay STEM Fest February 6, 2016, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

This exciting program provides girls in grades 4 -10 with hands-on, fun STEM activities, and opportunities to interact with women role models in STEM careers. Includes information sessions for parents. Bring your whole troop! You do not need to be a Girl Scout to attend!

Go Native-Pollinators & Flowers

GS Brownie and Junior Spend the afternoon at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center exploring the native plants in our Rain Garden and fields for native pollinators. Investigate how flowers are designed to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, beetles and moths. Discover the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and other insects that share its milkweed host plant. Collect milkweed seeds and learn how to establish a Monarch garden in your yard or neighborhood. Steamin’ Day Fun Patch

GS Daisy through Ambassador Girl Scouts are encouraged to visit the Marshall Steam Museum during special Steamin’ Day events to complete their Steamin’ Day Fun Patch. Steamin’ Days are special events held the First Sundays, September through November that include the opportunity to ride in historic automobiles and trains. Patches are earned by completing a specified number of activities (dependent on scout level) in our Scout Activity Booklet. Certain activities can be completed at home with the girls’ troop and family while others must be completed during a visit to one of our public Steamin’ Day events. Scouts must bring their completed Scout Activity Booklet. WHEN: First Sundays of the month, September-November. (September 6, October 4 and November 1). WHERE: Marshall Steam Museum at Auburn Heights 3000 Creek Rd., Box 61, Yorklyn, DE 19736 COST: Admission rate to the museum. Experience a more technical treasure hunt with geocaching. Practice using a GPS and search the DEEC Garden for hidden treats. Fall Festival and Punkin Fling

All GS grade levels, families and friends Have a fun family day celebrating the fall season. Bring your home made catapult or trebuchet and compete to fling a pumpkin the farthest. Build a scarecrow and enter it in a contest. Bring a batch of chili for our cook-off or bring your box oven for a dessert bake off. Enjoy archery games, arts and crafts and a bonfire on the beach! On My Honor Ceremony

All Girl Scout grade levels, families and friends To achieve the Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze Award takes dedication, organization and determination. These awards are not easily achieved and the girls who earn them are to be commended. This special girl-led ceremony will honor the Girl Scouts who have achieved their highest grade level awards. We will also acknowledge the commitment of girls who have been a Girl Scout for 10 and 13 years and graduating seniors. Information about the Take Action projects will be on display. Attendance by honorees, families, friends and the Girl Scout community is encouraged. Cadettes in grade 8 through Ambassadors who are not being honored are eligible to apply for Mistress of Ceremonies. Please see page 39 for details. WHEN: January 24, 2016, 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Snow date: January 31, 2016) WHERE: Smyrna High School, 500 Duck Creek Pkwy., Smyrna, DE 19977 COST: $5 per person. (There is no cost for girl being honored.) NOTE: Girls must complete and submit final paperwork to council by the September 30, 2015 deadline in order to be recognized. Travel back in time to discover a female scientist, Martha Coston, who made a very important contribution to the U. S. Life-Saving Service. Girls will learn how to tie a decorative knot, perform a science experiment, and enjoy a guided tour through the museum. Tales of tradition and tragedy from the station’s logs will be told over a campfire on the beach. The girls will then experience what life was truly like as a surfman of the U.S. Life-Saving Service by spending the night inside the historic Indian River Life-Saving Station. Service Unit Basics (2 hours) Service Unit Basics provides new

adult volunteers the opportunity to meet with their service teams and learn about forms, policies and procedures that support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). Service Unit Basics is one of the first steps in education and is followed by further learning in Volunteer Essentials. Journey Basics The Journey Basics

video will provide a general overview of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), the Journey books and the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. It will also provide suggestions and insight on how to use these tools together. This training is mandatory for volunteers. The video is located in the Volunteer Tool Kit at www.gscb.org.

FIRST AID & CPR

A first-aider is defined as an adult Volunteer who has taken Girl Scout– approved first aid and CPR training that includes specific instructions for child CPR. The American Red Cross, National Safety Council and the American Heart Association offer such courses. Safety Activity Checkpoints notes when a first-aider needs to be present based on specific programs. Check with the above providers for classes in your area, or ask your Service Unit Manager to schedule a class with council. www.gscb.org

OUTDOOR EDUCATION Cabin Camping Cabin Camping is a home study course that will

help guide you through the processes needed to plan, experience and evaluate a simple overnight experience for your girls in either a lodge, cabin or hotel location. This course will not prepare you to build fires or cook over anything other than a range, stove or microwave. For camping that involves fire building and other cooking methods, you will need to take Camping Basics or Troop Camp Training. Cabin Camping training is located in the Volunteer Tool Kit at www.gscb.org.

Camping Basics Learn the skills you will need to take your girls on an outdoor trip including: planning, packing, cooking, fire building, care of camp site and equipment, and outdoor program ideas. You will be broken into patrols and required to provide all equipment and food for the overnight session. All activities take place rain, snow or shine. Please come prepared for outdoor activities. We’ll sing songs, hike the trails, and have an outdoor cookout, then retire to the comfort of the STEM Lodge for the night. FACILITATING ADULT LEARNING

Facilitators are volunteer mentors who provide our leaders the tools to become successful and share the joy that comes from helping girls develop their leadership skills and be the successful leaders of tomorrow. Once you have completed the course, you will be required to apprentice for at least three sessions in the course you want to facilitate. Facilitators are required to facilitate a minimum of two trainings per year and attend a minimum of one Think Tank session. Our new Northern Resource Center is being built on a beautiful seven acre wooded lot on Old Baltimore Pike in Newark, DE and will serve the entire Delmarva Peninsula. The building will include a multi-purpose room, retail shop, offices and exhibit area. The woods and stream will be used for on-site outdoor education.

Bay Shop Rebate Program Get a Bay Shop Certificate by collecting Bay Shop receipts from purchases made by leaders, parents and guardians. Only purchases between August 1 and October 31, 2015 are eligible, including online and phone orders. Submit receipts and a completed rebate form before November 30, 2015. Your rebate will be sent in a notification email by midJanuary and is valid through April 30, 2016. You must use your rebate all at one time.
