ost-World War II, 1948 was a good year in the United States. One of the most memorable events was the surprise reelection of Harry S. Truman; against the predictions of the press, he beat the odds. Also in that year, Ed & Mary Ellen Hallock founded Construction Specialties in Newark, NJ, as a manufacturer’s representative firm. They also defied the odds. The business they started has become a global leader in architectural and engineered products.

Ed Hallock, the founder of Construction Specialties, was on the first commercial flight from the US to China after Richard Nixon’s historic trip to open the Bamboo Curtain. As a gesture of goodwill, Mr. Hallock brought the first set of Sweets Architectural Files ever on that continent and made a gift of them to the University of Beijing’s School of Architecture. Today, a C/S operation can be found in most industrialized nations.

Project: Walt Disney Concert Hall Architect: Frank Gehry Product: C/S Louvers Only a storm resistant louver with a custom Kynar® finish was acceptable in this Gehry masterpiece featuring custom titanium cladding.

Project: de Young Museum Architects: Herzog & de Meuron and Fong & Chan Architects Product: C/S Expansion Joint Covers This modern art museum featured a random pattern copper cladding. Any conventional seismic cover would have had major visual impact on the facade. C/S designed a cover to accept the same cladding, thereby completely concealing the seismic joints.
Project: Lakeside Hospital Architect: Leo A. Daly Product: C/S AcrovynŽ In this prestigious healthcare facility, our new Acrovyn Platform Handrails and patient room Wall Panels blend beautifully with the hospital’s architecture, while helping to deinstitutionalize the interior.

Project: The J. Paul Getty Center Architect: Richard Meier and Partners Product: C/S Skylight Shutters In order to protect the priceless art collection, it was necessary to prevent the penetration of damaging UV rays while, at the same time, allowing natural daylight for best viewing conditions. The operable airfoil shading over the skylights was connected to solar tracking software for the perfect solution.
Project: Statue of Liberty Architect: Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, NYC Product: C/S Louvers Project: Taipei 101 Architect: C.Y. Lee Product: C/S Expansion Joint Covers One of the world’s tallest buildings is designed to flex significantly under wind loads, yet it rises out of a fixed-base podium with full public access. Only C/S had a seismic cover system that could accommodate this movement while remaining flush to foot traffic.
The most recognizable louver manufacturer in North America was the only choice to provide storm-proof ventilation for this most recognizable icon.

Project: Budapest House of Parliament Product: C/S Acrovyn® Custom Acrovyn, wood and stainless steel corner guards were developed to match and protect the classic interiors of this neo-Gothic structure.
Project: Wembley Stadium Architects: Foster & Partners and HOK Sport Products: C/S Pedisystems® and C/S Acrovyn® When they rebuilt the home of national football in England, only one entrance flooring system—C/S Pedisystems— was considered capable of handling the 90,000 fans at every game!

Project: Time and Life Building Architect: Harrison, Abramovitz, and Harris Product: Data Aire Our Data Aire division’s Process Cooling Equipment helps to keep the mission critical areas of this building at the perfect temperature and humidity for optimum efficiency. Project: Sydney Opera House Architect: Jorn Utzon Engineer: Ove Arup and Partners Products: C/S Pedisystems® and C/S Acrovyn® Maintaining the beauty of the world famous Sydney Opera House had been a continual problem for the maintenance staff. The facility staff now utilizes C/S Pedisystems Entrance Flooring at all of the entrances of this iconic building, and C/S Acrovyn Wall Protection keeps the building’s backstage areas clean and new.

Project: The New York Times Building Architects: Renzo Piano Building Workshop and FX FOWLE Product: C/S Pedisystems速 Due to the amount of people expected to use this prestigious building on a daily basis, the entrance flooring was designed with a custom heavy duty, drainable support system and included an integrated pressure sensor for the automatic doors.

Project: Raffles Quay in Singapore Architect: Kohn Pedersen and Fox Product: C/S Louvers A combination of custom horizontal sill extensions and custom blade profiles allowed the architect to use this louver application as a key feature while preserving 100% protection from typhoon-driven rain.
Project: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Architect: Ballinger Product: C/S Louvers Controlling airflow to this project was a challenge. The design called for a very narrow band of louvers that had active and inactive airflow requirements. C/S Location Smart Louvers created an invisible transition between the active and inactive portions.
Project: San Francisco International Airport Architect: SOM Product: C/S Expansion Joint Covers This base-isolated terminal connected at each end to fixed-base boarding areas required seismic joints of up to 37" with four-way movement. Despite this challenge, the joint covers remain virtually invisible.
