university. It was also the initial year of SJU’s first full-term lay presidency. The change in governance was seamless—the day-to-day experiences of students, faculty, staff and alumni have not been affected, which is exactly as intended. This will also go down in history as the year John Gagliardi, SJU’s head football coach for more than 60 years, retired. We are grateful for each one of those years. The winningest coach in college football not only took Saint John’s to new heights on the gridiron, he provided a model of leadership to his players and others that transcended football. Along with these firsts, Saint John’s had a solid fundraising year, raising $20.4 million in gifts and pledges. This includes $14.6 million for the University and $5.8 million for the Abbey. Since we began counting gifts to a new capital campaign on July 1, 2008, Saint John’s has raised $102.5 million (through June 30, 2013). We also continue to maintain strong enrollment and graduation figures. The 2013 SJU graduating class included 409 undergraduates and 24 School of Theology • Seminary graduates. They joined a worldwide alumni community of more than 24,000 Johnnies living and working in 74 countries. And in August 2013, 497 Johnnies of the Class of 2017 made Saint John’s their home for the next four years. We look forward to the many ways in which they will leave their mark on alma mater. We hope you will enjoy the highlights of the year on the following pages. On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Saint John’s University, thank you again for your generosity.

Because of your generous gifts of time, talent and treasure, Saint John’s can reach higher, do more and go further on behalf of our students every day—thank you! SJU stands out from the crowd because of you. This year ushered in a new era in which Saint John’s University operated as a separate civil corporation from Saint John’s Abbey and was governed by a Board of Trustees with full fiduciary responsibility for the
