Series History: Today’s game is the sixth meeting between SJU and Wisconsin-Whitewater and the first during the regular season since the series’ first showdown in 2002, a 42-18 win for the Johnnies in Collegeville. Since then, UW-Whitewater has hosted and defeated SJU in four consecutive playoff games. SJU is 33-14 all-time against members of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Success, Too: The Johnnies are 33-4 (.892) in regular-season, non-conference games since 2002. All four losses were to Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2002, 2004, 2010 and 2011), including two in overtime on the road (2002 and 2010) and another decided by two points (30-28 in 2004). SJU’s other non-conference tilt during this fall’s 10-game, regular-season schedule is next Saturday (Sept. 10) against another WIAC opponent, Wisconsin-River Falls, in Clemens Stadium.

Today’s Season Opener: Saint John’s begins its 111th season today against Wisconsin-Whitewater, the first of three consecutive games against opponents that were ranked in the D3football.com Preseason Top 25 poll (Sept. 10 vs. No. 18 Wisconsin-River Falls and Sept. 24 at No. 13 Bethel). The Johnnies won their MIAC-record 35th conference title and made their seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Playoffs (31st postseason appearance overall, 27th in Division III) last fall. Whitewater made its third straight NCAA appearance, advancing to the national semifinals, and finished with a 13-1 record (7-0 WIAC). The Warhawks won their 38th WIAC championship last fall and have secured at least a share of 13 conference titles in the last 16 seasons.

Preseason All-Americans: A pair of SJU seniors, tight end Alex Larson and defensive lineman Michael Wozniak, were named to the D3football.com Preseason All-America team Aug. 15. Wozniak was named to the first team and Larson earned second-team honors. Both were named to Lindy’s preseason All-America first team earlier this summer. Last season, Wozniak earned D3football.com All-America firstteam honors and Larson received fourth-team accolades. Wozniak started all 12 games last season and finished with a team-leading 15.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks, including 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in two NCAA playoff games. He totaled 30 tackles (20 solo), five quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. He was named as one of six small-college players to watch nationally in an article published Aug. 25 by the Associated Press. The 6-foot-7 Larson played 11 of the 12 games and finished second on the team in receptions (33) and receiving touchdowns (8), and third in receiving yards (476) last fall. In 153 seasons of college football, no coach has been as successful or achieved the longevity of John Gagliardi. His 489 career wins and 64 seasons at the collegiate level both stand as all-time records. He spent 60 of those seasons at Saint John’s, and during that time his teams won 27 MIAC titles and four national championships. But as impressive as those numbers are, his legacy extends far beyond that. The values he established during his time in Collegeville are now ingrained in the institution’s culture, as well as in the many athletes, friends and colleagues he inspired.

“There have been a lot of great memories, but at least from a success standpoint, the (SJU football team) winning the national championship in 2003 has to be right up there,” Bierscheid said. “And getting to work with the baseball team, especially with the roll they’ve been on lately, has been a big highlight as well. “It’s just been a pretty good run overall.”

From ankles to shoulders, knees to elbows and every joint, bone or tendon in between – if a Saint John’s University athlete has had problems with it over the past 27 years, Scott Bierscheid has been there to Thehelp.Minnesota StateMankato graduate, who earned his master’s degree in athletic administration at St. Cloud State, has been the head athletic trainer in Collegeville since November of And,1995.inthat time, he’s found a home for himself and his family.

“I was working with the men’s hockey team at SCSU while I was completing my master’s degree, and I was also helping out at St. Cloud Orthopedics,” he recalls. “There was an opening out here and T.J. (Tom Jensen, SCO’s long-time director of physical and occupational therapy) asked me if I’d be interested. I said I would be and the rest is history.”

“It’s really the sense of community you find here, and the people I’ve gotten to work with – from the administration and the coaches to the student-athletes themselves,” Bierscheid said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have had top-notch assistant trainers over the years as well. It’s been a great fit for me. “I fell in love with this university and with being in Central BierscheidMinnesota.”completed an athletic-training internship with the NFL’s New England Patriots in 1991. Then, after graduating from MSU-Mankato the following year, he was an athletic trainer for the football and wrestling teams at Division I Oklahoma State from 1992-93 and with St. Cloud State’s men’s ice hockey team from 1994-95.

At SJU, Bierscheid also serves as the adviser for SJU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which meets monthly to incorporate Benedictine values into the SJU student-athlete experience by organizing events that give back to the campus and surrounding St. Cloud community.

This past summer, the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation named him the 2022 winner of the Fred Zamberletti Award which honors the memory of the late Zamberletti, the Minnesota Vikings’ first head athletic trainer.

“We both came in as freshmen in 2018,” he continued. “But last year was the first time we were on the field at the same time, and we really found a groove as the season went along.”

Wozniak and Faoliu each made positive impressions on the coaching staff as freshmen and seemed in line for expanded playing time in 2019. Faoliu got it, recording 27 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss, and

Ask for Michael Wozniak and Metoriah Faoliu have been around the Saint John’s University football program for a long time now. But because of injury and global pandemic, last year was the first chance the defensive tackles had to play together. And they certainly made the most of it.

Faoliu, a 6-foot-1, 270-pound graduate of California’s Vista Murrieta High School, finished the 2021 season with 49 tackles, including 11 for a loss, and four sacks. Wozniak, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound graduate of Robbinsdale Armstrong High School, ended the year with 30 tackles, including 15.5 for a loss, and an MIAC-best 10.5 sacks. Both earned all-conference honors as part of a Johnnies’ defense that allowed an MIAClow average of 12.92 points and 250 yards per game.

“Meta and I just seemed to click,” said Wozniak, whose grandfather LeRoy Lilly ‘55 was a standout football player at SJU, and whose uncles Mike (who passed away in 1997, and for whom Wozniak is named), Pat and Dan were stars for the Johnnies on the soccer field. His mother Mary and aunt Colleen each played tennis at the College of Saint Benedict.

“We really miss (defensive end) Seth (Morem), but the two of us are back and we have Collin here,” Faoliu said. “It’s a little different because last year we were sharing the field with him side-by-side. Now he’s on the sideline coaching us. But it’s great to be able to still get his perspective on things.” Faoliu was able to return this season because of an NCAA ruling granting athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the impact of COVID-19. Wozniak has that year, plus a medical redshirt, meaning he could technically return in 2023 as well. But he does not plan to do so. Which means this season is the last hurrah for both players.

“Our goal is just to keep getting better,” said Wozniak, an accounting major who earned both All-American and Academic All-American honors a year ago. “We were playing some pretty good football on the defensive line at the end of last season and we don’t want to take a step back. We know we have a tough schedule, especially early. But we’re excited about that. “I think all of our defensive linemen are coming into this season with a lot of confidence.” 320-259-4100 StCloudOrthopedics.com

Wozniak earned a starting job, but suffered a broken left hand in the season opener and missed the rest of the year. Then COVID-19 wiped out the Johnnies’ season in 2020. So his first game back wasn’t until the opener last season against Aurora (Illinois).

“I knew he was a good player, but until I got to play with him, I didn’t realize just how good,” said Faoliu, an integrative science major who is one of six siblings. “We got to know each other a lot better last season and that was fun. “He’s my brother and I’m just glad we both have the chance to do this one more time.” Indeed, the return of the interior core of Wozniak and Faoliu means the Johnnies return 50 percent of their starting defensive line from a year ago. A third member of that foursome, defensive end Collin Franz, is still with the team as a volunteer assistant coach while teaching in the nearby Sartell school district.

The familiar stone entrance behind the south end zone was built in 1939 and the first press box and concession stand were erected four years later. In 1997, local philanthropist Bill Clemens – the man for whom the stadium is named -- provided a million-dollar donation that allowed for construction of a new grandstand, an expanded press box, larger concession stands and restrooms and a new entrance. Another donation by Clemens, who attended SJU from 1938-40, made possible the installation of an artificial playing surface in 2002. A third tier to the press box was added in 2009 and lights were installed in 2012. Meanwhile, large crowds have been commonplace. SJU has finished among the national leaders in per-game attendance in NCAA Division III in each of the last 20 seasons – including crowds of 10,000 or more 19 times since 2001. That included a facility-record 17,327 for a matchup against St. Thomas on Sept. 26, 2015 – a day in which

“I see all the trees and everything else and I think ‘This is a beautiful place,’” Gagliardi once said of the stadium. “It’s been enhanced and improved over the years, but it’s always been a nice setting.”

ESPN’s “Sports Center On the Road” program was broadcast live from the stadium, and a crowd of 13,107 on hand to see legendary former coach John Gagliardi become the winningest coach in college football history when SJU beat Bethel 29-26 on Nov. 8, 2003.

CLEMENS STADIUM

“Recently, the Board of Trustees of the University decreed that Saint John’s should become the possessor of the finest athletic field in the State with the possible exception of Northrop Field at the Univ. of Minn. in Minneapolis, and larger and better than that of any institution of equal rank West of Chicago,” read a story in the school’s 1908 athletic catalogue in advance of the stadium’s opening that fall.

“With these marked improvements in external appearance, St. John’s will soon be universally acknowledged as the beauty spot of Central Minnesota.” That vision indeed yielded an autumn playground. Ringed by the gorgeous fall colors of the surrounding Central Minnesota woods, the field has long become a destination spot, a status only solidified when Sports Illustrated named it one of college football’s top 10 “Dream Destinations” in The1999.facility itself has expanded often over the years.

From the start, those in charge of developing the space now known as Clemens Stadium had something majestic in Somind.they set about turning a former cranberry bog into a natural bowl stadium that has been the home of Saint John’s University football for 114 years.

Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s grads have always been present for each other, for today’s students and for these institutions, generously serving as mentors, resources and benefactors. I look forward to meeting and connecting with as many of you as possible and learning the heart of that connection. And, of course, we were drawn here by these students. The unique structure of this integrated relationship attracts and produces women who lead with passion and confidence. It attracts and produces men of character and wisdom who will bring their best to everything they do. And in that spirit, I’m glad you’re here with us today to kick off another season in the storied tradition of Johnnie football. Like all of our Bennie and Johnnie competitors, these are student-athletes in the finest sense of both those words. As we cheer for today’s performances on the field, let’s all commit to cheering a little louder in recognition of the performances we don’t see –in the classroom, in the lab and in service to their church or community. It’s here at last: Opening Saturday of the 2022 Johnnie football season! And I’m so pleased to be able to welcome you to Clemens Stadium and the campus of Saint John’s University. My name is Brian Bruess and, as of July 1, I am president of both College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University – the first time both of those titles have been held concurrently. In the short time that my wife Carol and I have been here, we have both certainly felt the engaging welcome of this community. The Benedictine hospitality lives up to its billing. Thank you to those who have reached out with greetings and well wishes. That sense of community was certainly one of the most powerful forces drawing Carol and me to this opportunity, but not the only There’sone.the tradition of academic rigor that Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s have upheld for well over a century. The education our students receive can change lives, impact families and change the direction of whole communities. That’s an exciting thing to be part of, and I look forward to building on those outcomes in the coming years.

“Honestly, I was frustrated at first, but Ross (Denne) came in and did an outstanding job,” Keating said. “And I got to come back for an extra year that turned out pretty great. That likely wouldn’t have happened otherwise.”

“I got hit from every angle, including taking a helmet to my right arm. I was hoping it was just bruised, but I could tell right away it worse.” Indeed, Keating’s right arm was shattered in 16 places, requiring plates and screws. The injury ended his season, yet afforded him the chance to come back in 2003 when he helped lead the Johnnies to the program’s fourth national title in the same season in which head coach John Gagliardi became the winningest coach in college football history.

“Thesuccessfully.thirdtime was definitely not the charm,” recalls Keating, who transferred to SJU in 2000 after two seasons on the basketball team at the University of Minnesota and was also a standout point guard for the Johnnies.

Keating remembers

When Ryan Keating thinks back on the Saint John’s University football team’s first meeting with WisconsinWhitewater, which took place 20 years ago this month, one play stands out. With good reason. It was play that ended that season for the Johnnies quarterback, but allowed him to return for an even-morememorable one a year later. With his team leading 14-10 and just over a minute to go before halftime on a sunny afternoon at Clemens Stadium, Keating tried taking off up the middle on 4th -and-8 at the Warhawks’ 33. He was hoping to duplicate gains of 29 and 30 yards he’d rattled off in similar fashion earlier in the game.

The $13.5 million project, which opened at the start of the fall semester, consists of two apartment buildings near the shoreline of Stumpf Lake housing juniors and seniors and totaling just over 45,300 square feet. All of the apartments are air-conditioned. Most house six students and include a living room, small kitchen area and two bedrooms on the first floor, with four bedrooms on the second. In each building, there is a community laundry and shared study room for group activity.

Doors to the buildings open toward the McKeown Center, a community space built in 2009 where students can meet, study, and host events.

LIFE AT SJU NEW FLYNNTOWN

In addition to the six-person apartments, there are select one-person apartments compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act that allow for students who experience food allergies or other medical or emotional needs to live alongside their friends.

This fall has marked big changes to the residential student experience at Saint John’s University. That’s because of the completion of the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Village townhomes in the Flynntown section of campus.

The entire project is connected to the main campus by the newly-constructed Flynntown Bridge, a 270-foot long, 12foot wide pedestrian bridge spanning Stumpf Lake west of the County Road 159 bridge.

“All of my tuition expenses rest with me, so scholarships were the main thing I had to consider when I was looking at school where I could continue my education,” said Wilson, an economics major who has received the Fran and Julia Ladner Family Endowed Scholarship, the Joyce and William Sexton Scholarship, the Joseph Friedrich Scholarship and a Dean’s Scholarship.

Octavius Wilson Jr. has thrived at Saint John’s University.

This past summer, he completed an internship in the financial department at Microsoft at the company’s corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington. But he said none of that would have been possible were it not for the assistance that scholarships provide.

He’s also received Securian Foundation and Eddie Phillips Scholarships from the Minnesota Private College Council. “Saint John’s was the top place when it came to offering the kind of scholarship package that made going here realistic and affordable for me,” he continued. “I’m really grateful for that because it helped make this opportunity possible.”

Not only has the senior linebacker from Hill-Murray High School played a key role in the Johnnies’ defensive rotation, but he’s also served on the program’s leadership council and as a representative on the SJU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Wilson is not alone. In all, 98 percent of SJU students receive scholarships or financial aid. The SJU Student Fund helps make that happen by providing direct financial support to our students.
