The Language of Clay: CSAD Collaboration with Fieldworks

Page 1

The Language of Clay: Part One Amanda Roderick  from Mission Gallery has said that she would welcome publishing drawings and thoughts for educational resources arising from our encounter with Anna Noels work and her presentation and demo on Friday (26th Jan) on the Mission Gallery blog. This is a wonderful professional practice opportunity to get your name known for practicing and commenting upon your field in six key venues for ceramics in Wales

The Language of Clay: Part One Exhibition Schedule

The Language of Clay: Part One Consider how certain activities might heighten a viewers exploration of Anna’s work. Look through the tasks set for the drawing session that took place last Friday as example. The drawings from this will be pinned up in the seminar room ready for a seminar to discuss how we ca take this opportunity further.

What are the visual things that strike you when you first walk into the exhibition? Create a map of objects in the order that they catch your eye when you first look around the Space – take Elode Alexandre’s images as a cue – include the architectural detail as well as the artworks, their colour and pattern as well as interior detail. Keep your drawings simple.

Is colour, pattern or form more dominant in the exhibition? Does their particular distribution across the works help connect one piece to another either in an abstract way – creating particular pattern or rhythm – or encourage narrative across the pieces? Identify the dominant elements of colour, pattern and form. Explore how their re-‐distribution and re-‐configuration can change the feel or intent of the exhibition (making small properties larger & larger properties smaller, and re-‐ordering them).

In what ways were the pieces constructed? Working from what you can ascertain from the final pieces, sketch elements of the process of their construction from initial model making to surface.

The narrative is up to us… What are the potential narratives contained within the work? Find ways of visualising the narrative surrounding the artworks so that a new viewer might be taken on new journeys through the exhibition.

The Language of Clay: Part One Anna Noel will be with us this Friday 29th 12 – 1pm in the seminar room to speak about her work and give a demonstration of her techniques. Please make every effort to attend, especially if you want to seize this opportunity!
