Cohoes forms committee on $10M funding

Panel to decide on downtown upgrades, economic development

COHOES – Mayor Bill Keeler will co-chair the city’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative Local Planning Committee to determine how to spend the $10 million state grant to revitalize downtown and promote economic development.

The committee is composed of 12 city business owners, educators, officials and clergy.

“Through the next seven months the Cohoes (Local Planning Committee) LPC, as a representative group of local and regional leaders, stakeholders, and community members will provide guidance to the consultant team throughout the planning process, help engage the larger Cohoes community in the process, and represent the variety of interests that will result in the creation of a plan that will improve the physical, social, environmental, and economic climate of the community,” the city said in a statement issued Friday.

The city’s local planning committee will make recommendations to the state on how

the $10 million grant should be allocated and spent. Cohoes was the Capital Region recipient for the sixth round of Downtown Revitalization Initiative funding.

Gov. Kathy Hochul visited Cohoes in March to announce the award at the Cohoes Music Hall. At the time of the presentation, Keeler said, “This ($10 million) really gives us the pop we’ve been waiting for for years.”

The mayor then forecast that the state grant would provide a “transformational change” for downtown.

Co-chairing the 12-member committee with Keeler is Lauren Payne, owner of Spiral Design Studio in Cohoes and a member of the Capital Region Regional Economic Development Council.

The remaining 10 members are Rod Dion, owner of Tech Valley Office Interiors in Cohoes and chair of the Cohoes Industrial Development Agency; Barbara Hildreth, a retired school principal, chairwoman of the Cohoes Local Development Corp, president of the Cohoes Library Board and member of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review; Glenda Kelman, chair of the Department

of Nursing at Sage Colleges; Joseph Nadeau, a construction project manager and member of the Cohoes Planning Board; Barbara Orekondy, a retired health care education specialist; Owen Smith, producing artistic director of Playhouse Stage Company; Laura Tarlo, principal of Cohoes High School, co-owner of Milltown Homes and member of the Cohoes IDA; Kaitlyn Tebordo-Wood, pastor, United Church of Cohoes; Renelle Turner, owner of Nelly’s Treats in Cohoes, and Benjamin Williams, executive director of the Connect Center for Youth in Cohoes.

seeds likely culprits of area fires

Cottonwood, poplar

At least four brush fires burned around the region last Thursday

Firefighters already facing tinder-dry conditions are dealing with a new ingredient that burns like gasoline as they confront fast-moving wildfires around the region.

At least four brush fires burned last Thursday in Guilderland, Rotterdam and Schenectady following a long stretch of hot, dry weather. Officials said fires were accelerated by the fluffy, white seeds of cottonwood and poplar seeds that have blanketed the ground.

“If it ignites this snowlike material, it takes off. It’s like gasoline,” said John Keimer, public information officer for the Westmere Fire Department.

The department confronted two brush fires lasr Thursday. Crews first responded around 4 p.m. to Johnson and Church roads. That fire was put out quickly, but, due to cleanup, crews were there for about two hours, Keimer said. Police closed the area to traffic for about an hour and a half.

Once that blaze was out, a different call came in around 6 p.m. for the area of Gipp and Rapp roads

near Crossgates Mall.

“They had to pack up very quickly from that fire and rush to the other fire,” Keimer said.

Westmere firefighters were assisted by departments from Guilderland, Bethlehem and Colonie, as well as police and other emergency workers. Firefighters fought the much larger blaze until around 9 p.m., Keimer said. One or two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, but no injuries or damage to structures were reported. Both fires are believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette igniting cottonwood and spreading to the dry vegetation, Keimer said.

That same evening, first responders were at the scene of a brush fire at 6 S. Westcott Road, Rotterdam police Lt. Jeff Collins said. A preliminary investigation suggests someone threw a cigarette butt on the ground, which set fire to “piles of pollen.” The fire spread to a house and a Jet Ski, damaging both. No injuries were reported, Collins said. Another brush fire occurred on Wilkins Lane off Hembold Drive in Guilderland, according to Fort Hunter Fire Chief Eric Adams.

The Capital Region has also been plagued by high temperatures and a stretch of little-to-no precipitation for the past 10 to 14 days, said Brett Rathbun, a meteorologist with

National Weather Service in Albany. Highs Thursday did not break records as previously predicted, but ranged from the mid 80s to low 90s. Humidity ranged from 25 to 35 percent. Friday’s highs broke into the 90s.

“With a combination of it being that warm and that dry for so long, any little ignition source could call for some brush fires,” Rathbun said.

Rotterdam declared a water emergency this week that bans all outdoor water use until Monday. In Guilderland, Supervisor Peter Barber said water-use restrictions are in place for the season.

Schenectady firefighters said cottonwood seeds have fueled several of the blazes they extinguished.

The city’s department responded to a call at about 2 p.m. Friday of a brush fire between State and Albany streets, said Deputy Chief Doug Faulisi. He also noted how the region is ripe for damaging brush fires because there hasn’t been significant rain to wash away the fluffy white seeds from trees like the cottonwood, the dogwood and poplar.

“They all give off that white cottony looking pollen and it builds up like crazy and it’s been happening all over different neighborhoods in the city,” he said. “All it takes is a cigarette or a little spark from anything and it all

goes up. It is phenomenal kindling.”

The fire behind 814 State St. was small and did superficial damage to the back steps before it was extinguished, but there was one earlier Friday, around 2 a.m., near Parkview Cemetery off Oregon Avenue that was significantly larger, though no structures were affected, he said-.“Normally, when we get rain, it (fluffy seed) is knocked to the ground and washed away,” he said. “If we get one good rainstorm all this will be over.”

Some relief came Friday afternoon in some areas from rain and thunderstorms. The coming week should be cooler than normal, with rain expected most days, he said.

“Hopefully brush season will end shortly,” Keimer said. Jim Franco contributed to this story.

Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

There is no denying the relief cool air provides when the temperatures outdoors are particularly steamy. In fact, having a place to cool off is a necessity for those who have succumbed to heat exhaustion or have difficulty regulating their body temperatures.

Even though air conditioning can provide relief, some people are reluctant to turn it on because of the drain

on electricity and the subsequent high energy bills that come with it. Certainly running the air conditioning can be costly, but regular maintenance helps a system to work more efficiently. It also enables homeowners to recognize issues that can lead to expensive repairs if left unchecked.

Here are some air conditioning maintenance tips to

keep a system in top condition.

• Change the filters. Dirty, clogged filters can cause a system to work harder to cool down rooms, compromising efficiency. Check the HVAC system’s manufacturer recommendation for how frequently to change the filters. Some may benefit from monthly replacement if the air is running constantly.

• Consider the MERV rating. The filter will have a minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV, according to This Old House. The higher the number, the better the filtration. But a higher MERV rating requires more energy to pull air through the filter. Therefore, choose a balance of filtration and energy cost requirements.

• Maintain the outdoor unit. Clean the AC unit with a soft-bristle brush and vacuum the fins at the start of the season and if the unit becomes dirty from weather, pollen and other elements. Bent condenser or evaporator fins can restrict air flow that would normally pass through the air conditioning system. Gently straighten them to improve air flow.

• Check and repair leaks. Airflow leaks through ductwork and with window AC units can reduce efficiency. Hold an incense stick or another smoldering item to check for leaks. If the smoke blows around, there is leakage. Use foil tape to seal small gaps and duct mastic for large ones. Stuff foam around a window unit and use taping as necessary.

• Supplement with a whole-house fan. The Family Handyman says an attic-mounted fan pushes hot air out through the attic vents and draws cooler, outside air through open windows and doors. The whole-house fan can be used to draw out most of the hot air before turning on the AC, or as a substitute on cooler days when having the AC on may not be crucial.

• Schedule annual maintenance. Homeowners may be able to handle various maintenance tasks, or they may want to have an HVAC technician come out and do the following: clean and inspect coils; adjust and replace fan belts; lubricate motors and bearings; inspect controls and safeties, check refrigerant; and determine if the unit is large enough for the home.

Air conditioning systems need routine maintenance to operate efficiently and at the lowest cost possible.

How to Make Outdoor Living Spaces More Comfortable

Private backyards are now go-to spaces for recreation and entertainment and great places to recharge the body and mind.

One ripple effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was more time spent outdoors, even if it was predominantly on one’s own property. OnePoll, in conjunction with the lawn care company TruGreen, surveyed 2,000 American homeowners and found participants spent 14 hours outside every week in 2021, which was three hours more than prior to the pandemic. In addition, respondents admitted that time spent outdoors was therapeutic.

A separate survey conducted for the International Casual Furnishings Association found that people now spend more time relaxing, gardening, exercising, dining, and entertaining outside than in years past. Though COVID-19 may no longer dominate headlines, the desire to enjoy outdoor spaces has not waned.

While enjoying outdoor living areas, homeowners can do all they can to make these spaces comfortable and welcoming. The following are some good starting points.

Get all lit up

Outdoor spaces can be enjoyed no matter the hour when there is ample lighting. That could be why the International Casual Furnishings Association reports those who plan to renovate their outdoor spaces list outdoor lighting as a priority. Outdoor lighting not only sheds light on entertaining spaces, but also makes spaces safer and more secure.

Increase privacy

No matter how friendly homeowners are with their neighbors, there comes a time when privacy is paramount. Fencing, whether it is wood or vinyl, or even a natural fence made from closely planted hedges, can ensure residents feel comfortable venturing outdoors to swim, take a cat nap or even star gaze in private.

Address the elements

Homeowners should note the direction their backyard faces and the typical daily conditions of the space. For example, a yard that faces southwest may get plenty of strong sun during the day, requiring the addition of shade trees, covered patios or arbors to cut down on the glare and heat. If the yard is often hit by winds, trees or bushes planted strategically as windbreaks can help.

Sit comfortably

High-quality comfortable seating increases the liklihood that homeowners will want to stay awhile in their outdoor spaces. A deep seating set complete with plush

chairs, outdoor sofa or love seat and chaise lounge chairs gives people more opportunity to sit and stay awhile.

Take a dip

A pool can be the perfect gathering spot on a warm day, while a spa/hot tub can bridge the gap to cooler weather. According to the Family Handyman, soaking in hot tubs can relax tired muscles after a long day, loosen up stiff joints, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the

time it takes to fall asleep.

Bite back at bugs

Homeowners may want to consider using a professional exterminator to get rid of ticks, mosquitoes and other nuisance insects from outdoor spaces.

As people spend more time enjoying their properties, they can consider the many ways to make outdoor living spaces more comfortable.

HOROSCOPE

Week Of une 1, 023

ARIES Mar 21/Ap r 20

Aries, despite your best efforts, you cannot seem to get much work done this week.

Your head is in the clouds with matters of the heart. Soon enough your focus will return.

TAURUS Apr 21/Ma y 21

This week you may tire from charging into battle and prefer others to do the ghting for you, mighty Taurus. You can use a rest from always putting yourself out there.

GEMINI May 22/Jun 21

Adopt a more serious tone this week, Gemini. Your actions may be judged without your knowledge, so lay low. Put the most professional foot forward.

CANCER Jun 22/Jul 22

People may respond much better to comforting words and gestures this week, Cancer. Carefully construct your approach to communicating to reach the widest audience.

LEO Jul 23/Au g 23

You may soon discover that a person who you consider a friend really is your perfect match, Leo. When you look at this person, the realization may suddenly dawn on you.

VIRGO Aug 24/S ept 22

Virgo, others around you are especially sensitive this week, so even the slightest criticism could be mistaken for an insult. Rather than ruf e feathers, hold your tongue.

LIBRA Sept 23/Oc t 23

These next few days you could present an opportunity to break free from everyday life and the mundane, Libra.

If you don’t know how to proceed, follow your gut.

SCORPIO Oct 24/Nov 22

You don’t always need to

be in pursuit of some sort of intellectual betterment, Scorpio. Get outside and take a walk or swim in a lake. Engage in trivial things that bring you joy.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23/D ec 21

Sagittarius, you are capable of producing impressive results if you set your mind on a plan. This is the week to dabble in a new hobby that will bring forth your creativity.

CAPRICORN Dec 22/Jan 20

Some debates may not come to a swift resolution, Capricorn. You may need to accept that you simply disagree with someone on a particular topic and let things lie.

AQUARIUS

Jan 21/Feb 18

Aquarius, you may have been a little worried about your work or studies lately. This week things will lighten up and you’ll feel much more in control of your situation.

PISCES Feb 19/Ma r 20

This is likely to be a busy week lled with the potential for travel. Bring along a close friend or a loved one for the adventure.
