dear fellow Warriors, Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. You are holding the first ever First Day Issue of The Surveyor. Inside, you’ll meet the staff, find some helpful tips, and, if you’re new, you’ll learn what you need to know about Washington High School. First things first on this day of firsts: What is The Surveyor? The Surveyor is the school newspaper for Wash. Our publication is put together entirely by students, all different grade levels. We meet every day during seventh hour and spend most of our time HAVING FUN!!! :). Actually, we spend most of our time doing intense journalism by writing in depth stories about events at Wash and designing our pages in our decked out Mac Lab. (We have a mini fridge with a guitar magnet, it’s pretty decked out.) It is very easy to become a member of The Surveyor. If you’re a freshman or a sophomore, you need to complete Journalism, a one trimester class taught by Mr. Phillips, our adviser. If you’re an upperclassman and have taken AP Composition, you can join. If you’re a photographer and have taken photography or any of the aforementioned classes, you can join. If you meet one of the above requirements, talk to Mr. Phillips in room 217 about joining. We are always looking for new members, at any time of the year. We need writers, photographers, videographers, podcasters, social media experts, webmasters, and artists. Joining The Surveyor is a

great way to meet new people, get involved at school, and build your people skills. So now that I’m done with my spiel about joining The Surveyor, I can talk about what I’ve learned so far from high school. It sounds so cliche, but high school goes by so fast. It seems like yesterday I was walking through the doors into the poorly lit hallways for the first time. Today, it’s my last first day at Wash, and I can barely believe it. Surviving High School is a lot easier than the movies make it out to be. Freshman, don’t worry, there aren’t any Regina Georges who keep a burn book about all the girls in the school. But then again, high school isn’t totally a breeze. You will make friends and find your way, even if you aren’t comfortable immediately. I have some basic rules for succeeding at Wash. Join Surveyor, work hard, be kind, get involved, and join Surveyor. It seems pretty simple, but if you do those things, you will survive, I promise. Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior like me, being a Warrior is a great thing. Even though we have to say goodbye to summer, we get to say hello to all the fellow students and faculty we haven’t seen for three months. Let’s make this year great.

yours truly, MJ

Welcome to all incoming freshman, and welcome back to the sophomores, juniors, and seniors! Washington High school is a great place to go through your uncomfortable teenage years, I say speaking from experience. However, I have a suggestion for making your time here even more enjoyable; have you considered joining our fine surveyor team? You won’t regret it. So here’s to all of you, I hope you have a successful school year and create a very memorable experience...by joining the surveyor. I will finish this memo by quoting our wise leader; “it’s a great day (year) to be a warrior.” Sincerely and seriously, Hannah
