See the Gorge in two downtowns—at Elora’s Victoria Park and Templin Gardens in Fergus. Our trails and natural waterways that run through both towns are valued treasures, and make possible the many creative outdoor pursuits, attractions and experiences that residents and visitors relish. There’s a cultural vibe that radiates through Elora and Fergus; a creative energy that draws artists, musicians and art lovers together to build an enclave of talent with an appreciative audience. Some of the most important artists in our nation have been inspired by our landscape, including A.J. Casson who called Elora “Ontario’s most beautiful village.” Village Idiot Productions bring live music and outdoor art to Elora while independent theatre companies grace the stage of the refurbished Fergus Grand Theatre. Through the Elora Arts Council, artists of diverse mediums put together the Elora Fergus Studio Tour, a behind-the-scenes tour of the intimate studios of participating artists that has become a southern Ontario “mustsee” event covering two weekends in fall. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE? hether it’s 20 minutes, two hours, two days or more, staff at our Information Centre can answer all your “how to” questions. From how best to spend four hours, to how to get to the Gorge, we can help with information, maps, brochures, directions and local advice. In the end, there may be only one thing better than visiting Elora and Fergus. And that would be calling it home. arliest settlers founded Fergus and Elora more than 175 years ago, and since that time, many from outside our community have come to call it home. There’s a reason for that. Ask those who came to visit and decided to stay, and they’ll mention the sensible pace of life—energized but unhurried. Businessdriven, but creative. Cultural and scenic, yet technologically connected, close to major roads and cities, including the GTA. Friendly and accessible; an enclave of natural beauty and agricultural production, buffered from city smog alerts and stressful drives. his majestic limestone building has been home to many. Built in 1877 to house the poor, it began as a self-sufficient industrial farm, worked and tended by the very people it sheltered. For 70 years, the Wellington County House of Industry and Refuge provided a home to people who had none. Today it is an impressive Museum, and features an award-winning exhibit, aptly called “If These Walls Could Speak”, which tells the stories of the people who lived, worked and died here. New permanent outdoor exhibits include the authentic 1877 barn—now open to the public for the first time (May–October), and the Poor House Cemetery, which is now an all-season interpretive site. The Wellington County Museum and Archives offers an everpopular, year-round events program too. Festivities such as Family

Day, Harvest Home and the Antique & Classic Car Show vie for attendance with Art Workshops for adults, lectures on heritage gardens or County history, musical performances and artistic exhibitions. Since 1975, the Museum has tripled its archival storage capacity. What this means, explains Museum and Archive Administrator Janice Hindley, is that “You can get into your family tree or explore the heritage of your home in a facility that has free Wi-Fi, computer workstations and complimentary access to Ancestry.ca while you’re here.” With its peaceful gardens, beautiful grounds, meeting rooms and catering kitchen, this unique hilltop site is a perfect venue for weddings, celebrations and meetings. And because it’s connected by trail to both Elora and Fergus, it’s ideally located for or a picnic, scenic stroll or hike.

arliest settlers founded Fergus and Elora more than 175 years ago, and since that time, many from outside our community have come to call it home. There are business development lands and opportunities here for entrepreneurs, manufacturing and service industries alike. Ontario’s Places to Grow Act is fueling growth in population, housing and the labour market. And then, of course, there are all the fun reasons to settle down here. If you run, paddle, pipe, or love old buildings, natural rivers and landmarks; if you like to fish, zipline, tour or stroll through the past; if you relish adventure or calm, you need to make Centre Wellington your destination for a day, a week, for life. his majestic limestone building has been home to many.

O

You deserve to be here, and your adventure starts just a short drive from wherever you are.

arliest settlers founded Fergus and Elora more than 175 years ago, and since that time, many from outside our community have come to call it home. Wellington County Museum: A National Historic Site

T

his majestic limestone building has been home to many.
