Equally varied are its people and cultures. The tribes of the Amazon remain virtually untouched by time, and gauchos still herd cattle on the windswept Argentine pampas. You can feel history reverberating amidst remnants of the great empire of the Inca, who inhabited these lands before the arrival of Europeans in the 15th and 16th centuries, built a kingdom in the Andes and wrought treasures from gold.

So you can experience the monumental Panama Canal or alluring South America properly, Princess offers an array of tours, activities and excursions — visit ancient ruins and old colonial capitals or learn the tango or shop for native crafts. Here are just a few examples of the adventures you can choose from.

Activities & Adventures

Nature & Wildlife

Fuerte Amador: Panama Canal & Locks Transit by Boat Visit Miraflores Locks by boat for an in-depth view of canal operations and enjoy the jungle scenery along Gatun Lake. Then, marvel at the ingenuity of the Gaillard Cut, the most challenging section of the canal to build.

Falkland Islands: Bluff Cove Penguin Rookery Marvel at the 1,000 pairs of gentoo penguins and the growing king penguin colony at the famed rookery in Bluff Cove. Stroll along the sandy white beach and watch for sea lions and dolphins frolicking just off shore.

Puerto Montt: Alerce Forest Eco-Walk & German Museum Explore a woodland of giant endangered alerce trees on a guided walk through the Lahuen Ñadi Forest. Then, visit Nueva Braunau and Puerto Varas, two charming villages that reflect their 150-year-old German heritage.

Pisco (San Martín): Islas Ballestas Wildlife Cruise Cruise to Islas Ballestas, Peru’s Galapagos, for an up-close look at large populations of marine mammals and birds in their protected habitat. And, take photos at “El Candelabro,” a figure etched into a coastal headland reminiscent of the Nazca Lines.

Punta Arenas: Patagonia Trek & Andean Club Travel to Punta Arenas’ premier ski club for an exhilarating mountainside experience. Ride a chairlift up the slopes, then hike down the mountain with your guide. This half-day tour treats you to stunning views of the Strait of Magellan.

Puntarenas: Scarlet Macaw Sanctuary, Boat Tour & Country Drive The Scarlet Macaw symbolizes the exotic beauty of the tropics and this half-day nature tour is your chance to view these magnificent birds at close quarters, plus enjoy a cruise through the mangroves.

Sightseeing & City Tours Buenos Aires: Recoleta Cemetery, Countryside & Estancia Visit the historic La Recoleta Cemetery where Evita Peron is buried. Then travel to the Pampas to visit a ranch, or “estancia,” to savor a barbecue and a show of music, dance, and gaucho-style horsemanship.

Fuerte Amador: Monkey & Wildlife Nature Cruise on Gatun Lake Ideal for nature lovers, this enchanting cruise takes you through the waters of the Panama Canal and along the jungle-covered islands of Gatun Lake. A naturalist guide points out the abundant wildlife among the lush and fragrant foliage, and coaxes playful monkeys to come out and say hello.

Special Interest Lima (Callao): City Drive & Indian Market Explore Peru’s “City of the Kings” on this easy half-day tour of Lima. View the Plaza de Mayor in the heart of the city, site of the Presidential Palace, and tour the chic Miraflores district. Then enjoy free time to shop for jewelry, crafts and knitwear at the Indian Market. Panama Canal: Panama Canal Railway & Miraflores Locks Hop aboard the hemisphere’s first transcontinental railroad and see the Panama Canal from the seat of a 19th-century railway dome car. During your journey you’ll travel across the isthmus and see Gatun Lake. Then, learn the history of the locks at the Miraflores Locks Observation Center. Rio de Janeiro: City Drive, Sugarloaf & Christ the Redeemer Experience the sights and sounds of Brazil’s Cidade Maravilhosa. Ride a cable car to the top of Sugarloaf for a sweeping view of Rio and its white-sand beaches. Visit one of the new seven wonders of the world, the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain. Enjoy Brazilian-style barbecue at one of the city’s best churrascaria restaurants.
