Guest Speaker ADRIAN MURTAGH
Adrian is Head of Development for Volunteer Scotland. He is a qualified nurse and has practiced in both the health service and social care sectors in Scotland and Australia. Over the past 16 years he has held leadership positions within two national charities and for 6 years was the chief officer of a Volunteer Centre. He has a particular interest in Volunteer Scotland’s Learning and Development function and the national quality framework Investing in Volunteers (IiV). Recently he has been involved in developing systems that support a more person centered approach to volunteer development and is currently working with SEE, ScotRail and Prudential, developing systems that will improve practice around Employer Supported Volunteering.

Shortlisted Nominees IAN MANSON ADULT LEARNER OF THE YEAR Janis Sinclair, Project Worker, CrossReach Counselling: Lothians Janis has been described as ‘hungry for learning’. As a member of staff who is always looking for opportunities to enhance both her practice and her skills as a practitioner and trainer, her focus on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is unparalleled. Janis’ passion for learning goes beyond her own development, as she strives to pass on what she had learned through training other staff and volunteers in the Service, which impacts clients by offering expert, dynamic approaches to counselling. Janis can be credited with a uniquely innovative, creative and dedicated approach to learning.
IAN MANSON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE Staff Group, Threshold Glasgow The team at Threshold Glasgow have overcome challenges in the service by working together to set up new initiatives including a new Community Service, Skills Base/Kitchen and Day Opportunities, which running events, training, and encourage service user involvement. The initiatives champion Personalisation in innovative ways, allowing people with learning disabilities to meet outcomes and develop skills. Threshold Glasgow shows excellence by empowering, involving and promoting customer’s independence and rights, helping people to get the highest quality care and supporting people to reach their full potential.

Shortlisted Nominees After School Support Programme, Daisy Chain Early Years Project, Glasgow The After School Support Programme based in the service runs across two schools, and is a nurture group for children identified as requiring additional support with educational attainment, confidence, self-esteem or social skills. The team uphold the value of enabling parents and children to learn together by encouraging their involvement, as well as providing children with the opportunity to open up about some of the challenges they face in a nurturing environment. Feedback from the head teachers in the schools illustrate that: ‘children who attend experience positive relationships with the adults running the group’ and ‘one on one support’ which makes a huge difference to the families depending on the service.
Effective Communication Group, Learning Disabilities Services The Effective Communication Group is a customer-led initiative, whose aim is to address training issues in Learning Disability Services surrounding communication skills, equality and diversity, and improving practice and quality of service throughout the organisation through staff training. The group recognised a need for staff to further understand the complexities and challenges of communication with their client group. They then designed and have been delivering a bespoke training course to staff and students with positive feedback, providing an excellent learning opportunity.

Shortlisted Nominees VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2017 Tom and Joyce Manson, CrossReach Counselling: Lothians VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
As Friends of CrossReach and volunteers, Tom and Joyce show a true representation of the love, care, compassion and faith that are the meaning of ‘friendship’. Always available to help the service, their unchanging belief in the importance of what can be achieved for others make the stand out. Whether is covering reception, re-decorating, or hosting fun events, they are both willing to support in any way they can, often the first to arrive and the last to leave. They have been described as ‘unsung heroes’, who have played a valuable part over the past 17 years.
Caroline Kerr, Daisy Chain Early Years Project, Glasgow Caroline’s attunement to the emotional needs of children and their parents make her shine as a Play Leader at Daisy Chain Early Years Project in Govanhill. Her relentlessly positive influence on others around her, her hard work and encouragement of the team make her a valued member of the service for the past 3 years. Caroline’s involvement in Cycle Scotland and Play on Pedals has allowed support to be extended to some of Glasgow’s most socially excluded and vulnerable children, and her level of skill, trust, and involvement has touched many lives.

Shortlisted Nominees Ann Adams, Whiteinch Move On Project, Glasgow Ann has been a committed supporter of CrossReach from being a Service User through to her current role. As a strong advocate for improved Service User involvement, she has shown dedication and commitment to supporting those who use Whiteinch to give feedback through a new questionnaire, presentations and shared information, and following up as a spokesperson for change by encouraging a more service user approach across the service. As a mentor, her enthusiasm inspir es others ongoing recovery, and her actions have seen tangible improvements to in the service.
EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR 2017 Elaine Waugh, Co-ordinator, Perth Prison Visitors’ Support and Advice Centre Elaine’s dedication has seen Perth Prison Visitors Centre grow from a small pilot initiative to a substantial Service, supporting thousands of people each year. The outcomes achieved have paved the way for national change initiatives which have seen visitors centres accepted as a crucial element of family support delivery across Scotland. Elaine’s endless investment and commitment to the Service’s success is evident in her passion for what she does, along with her desire to reflect Christ’s love in all that the service provides. Her selfless work and willingness to share good practice plays a part in making CrossReach sustainable for the future and known for its innovation.
