First Tracks Callaghan Gold at Whistler Olympic Park Although snow hadn’t quite reached BC’s cross country ski areas by early November, there was skiing at Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley. Snow had been stored at the end of the 2013-14 season, covered with sawdust to protect it from the hot summer sun, and then spread out at the beginning of the month. In addition to public skiing the 900 metre track was used by the BC Ski Team, BC Development Squad and BC Talent Squad for their early season snow camps. It also provided a competition course for Teck Coast Cup #1 later in the month. Skiers were surprised at how clean and white the snow looked, and the fact that the track had a very good base. With its varied terrain and base depth, the loop, dubbed ‘Callaghan Gold’, was just that. For more information refer to page 20.

Canada 150 Infrastructure Program The 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society (100 Mile House) received approval from Western Economic Development Canada for $20,515 to go towards the development of a new 12 kilometer all season trail loop. This trail loop will be suitable for walking and biking during the spring/summer/fall months and for skiing during the winter, and it will be on easy terrain that is suitable for all ages and skill levels of walkers, bikers and skiers. The grant will help

surface which will protect it from rutting in the summer months and make it easier to groom in the winter.

Winter Nights to be Brighter November 25, 2014

Winter nights are about to be made brighter for Revelstoke’s cross country skiers. The Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club’s (RNSC) new trail lights at Mount Macpherson Trails are ready to go. The lights will provide skiers with access to six kilometers of well-lit, groomed trails from dusk until 9:30 pm seven nights per

Outgoing RNSC President, Dave Kaegi, who spearheaded the project, says he hopes the lights give more people the opportunity to ski. “A lot of people haven’t been able to cross country ski before because they’re busy working during the day. This will be a chance for them to come out and try it. Now that we have lights, we’re going to have instructional programs in the evenings; the Lodge will be open so people can come in and warm up; I envision it to be a happening spot at night,� he says.

Lit trails will include The Mickey Olson Loop, Evelyn’s Choice, Dynamite Trail, Titan Trail, Terrain Park, Main Stadium and part of the Main Loop.

The RNSC has grown in recent years; memberships and day use have increased and the Club has seen the addition of a Day Lodge and maintenance barn. Despite the Club’s success, however, Kaegi says the lights remained a dream until very recently. “When we did a feasibility study in 2009, people expressed interest in the project, but the cost was exorbitant,� he says. “The technology with LED lights wasn’t there. The ongoing operational costs, at

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS for Learning Technique

Following are some key considerations to keep in mind to help &

It is important to have frequent, regular and properly structured learning opportunities.

Skiing fast should not be the initial objective. Focus on proper body positioning, body movements and timing – which, when executed correctly and together, produce rhythm. Ensure you have acquired the characteristic rhythm of a technique before focussing on the generation of power and speed.

In order to truly perfect technique, you need to develop an accurate kinaesthetic sense â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an instinctive feeling for what is <

7 & % = & adapt your movements to be optimal, even when fatigued or in the pressure of competition. Developing this acute kinaesthetic sense is best achieved by exposing yourself to a variety of stimuli. The following approaches to learning and training are applicable to this process: D Techniques should be practised on a variety of snow and track conditions. Once the mechanics of technique have been learned, you should practise in wet and mild conditions, on hard tracks and in soft powder snow so that you can learn how to adjust your technique to the different situations. Moreover, skiing in less than ideal conditions (e.g. on tracks that werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t set following a light snowfall) will help you develop balance and agility.

D As well as practising technique in a variety of snow and track conditions, you should practise technique on different types of ski trails. For example, modern ski trails and competition courses are often built like "super highways", but skiing on less manicured trails that twist and turn is important in order for you to improve your

Acquisition of Skills: Children In order to become technically competent, children need to spend time on skis in addition to the structured skill development sessions offered by their club. The more they practice, the sooner they will develop a good skill level!

When recommending additional practice time to the parents of young athletes, however, it is important for coaches to explain that spending time on skis for the purpose of improving technique (repeated practice) is not the same as skiing long distances â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the emphasis needs to be on quality rather than quantity. This is often misunderstood, resulting in children skiing kilometre after kilometre, while reinforcing poor technique habits. The latter situation occurs when a skier is unable to retain correct technique because he/she is tired. The repetition of incorrect or sloppy technique for long periods of time is exactly what you wish to avoid.

Repetition can ingrain a bad habit as well as a good one, and

The effects of extended and deliberate practice are more far-reaching than is commonly believed. Performers can acquire skills that circumvent the basic limits on working memory capacity and sequential processing.

The study of expert performance has important implications for our understanding of the structure and limits of human adaptation and optimal learning.

If skiers have practised their sport incorrectly, they may be unable to change and adapt (later), and then they cannot move on. It is essential that they are taught the right methods from the beginning and that these methods are accurately replicated and reinforced in practice.

Practice doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make perfect â&#x20AC;&#x201C; practice makes permanent.

Only perfect practice makes perfect permanently.

Children, LTAD & Competition Optimal competition calendar planning is critical for all stages of athlete development. At certain stages development of physical capacities takes precedence over competition, and at other stages the ability to compete becomes the focus. Competition schedules should therefore be selected based on the individual athletesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; developmental needs.

A long-term athlete development plan means a system of training and competition that is optimized for the abilities of athletes during the various developmental stages. The following factors should be considered when planning:

training-to-competition ratio) during the early stages of athlete development will result in a lack of sport skills to build on in later stages.

Optimal training-to-competition ratios should be the objective for all stages of athlete development. For example, the recommended number of races per season for the following age groups are: D

six to eight for girls 8-11 and boys 9-12 years of age, and

eight to twelve for girls 11-13 and boys 12-14 years of age.

The length and level of the competitive season should be aligned with the changing needs of the developing athlete in the Long Term Athlete Development progression (http:// www.crosscountrybc.ca/long-term-athlete-development).

The appropriate level of competition, which is critical to the technical, tactical and mental development of the athlete at all stages.

At the end of the L2T stage girls can begin to develop their maximal oxygen consumption rate (VO2max) though

racing, as they are entering a Window of Optimal Trainability (WOT) for this performance factor.

Race distances that are optimal for this stage - in order to develop VO2max - are in the range of 1.5 to 3 kilometres (5 - 10 minutes).

Due to the longer period of pre-adolescent growth for boys (as compared to girls), it is not optimal for boys at the L2T stage to be introduced to VO2max development. Therefore most race distances for at this stage should exceed three kilometres, so that the athletes are optimizing the WOT for aerobic capacity that corresponds to the growth phase they are in.

If a competitor is not ready when he should start he must be started off nevertheless and his time taken as if he started on time. The timers will then let him start as soon as he is ready.

The numbers once drawn for a cross-country race must never be changed. If one or more competitors have withdrawn, the next man starts in his place, but using his own number. Post entries, if allowed,

Due to the whole-hearted efforts of the president the membership was more than doubled, and with the public support we received are sure of having even a bigger and better season next winter. Moonlight ski-ing parties became so popular at the ski cabin on Boar Mountain that new trails were cut out to aid some of the novices in making the return journey to town after dark. Our Christmas celebration was a turkey supper held at the ski cabin followed by an evening of dancing.

Callaghan Gold During the summer of 2013, as part of our ongoing commitment and support to cross country skiing, Whistler Sport Legacies set aside a certain amount of capital funding to create a snow storage facility that would allow us to offer guaranteed snow to our provincial teams, our local clubs and eventually the general public from the beginning of November each year.

A suitable site was chosen to the west of the Biathlon stadium, which faces due north/south. This particular site had been used as a dumping area for organics (e.g. tree stumps, overburden, soils, and rocks) during the construction of what was then the Nordic venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We knew that everything that had been buried there should have composted to a certain state, and that would help keep the digging reasonably inexpensive.

The site was surveyed and it was decided that we would construct a horizontal â&#x20AC;&#x153;half-pipeâ&#x20AC;?. Construction started late in 2013 with the snow already falling. The dimensions of the half-pipe were to be 20m wide by 100m long by 5+m high (approx. 10,000 sq. m), with a 2% slope heading north for drainage into an already established drainage system.

The construction of the half-pipe took approximately seven days using two large excavators that worked in tandem with one another, moving 7 +

In reality, with the unusually hot summer that followed, it would have been better to use a 50cm coverage. That summer as it got hotter and hotter we watched our snow slowly settle and settle.

We were grateful for the Callaghan Gold trail as it saw us through to the Christmas period. As we moved into 2015 most of the precipitation was rain with unseasonal warm temperatures. By the end of February we were back to Callaghan Gold for our Ski Sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Kool and Jackrabbit programming, and by the middle of March, with so much rain, we closed. Needless to say we were not able to harvest any snow at that time for the 2015 -2016 season, as all of it was washed away.

It should be noted that on one of our north facing trails we still had a 10m section of 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Callaghan Goldâ&#x20AC;? snow in June 2015.

The last week in October 2013, in heavy rain, we commenced uncovering the snow pile - or what had now become known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Callaghan Goldâ&#x20AC;?.

Our snow had shrunk over the summer to approximately 3m in depth. We began by removing the sawdust, while being careful not to contaminate it.

This was a two day exercise using one excavator, a front-end loader and two snow cats. The sawdust was moved by the front-end loader to an outof-the-way storage area to be used again next year. We experienced very little sawdust loss and minimal snow contamination. Â&#x201C;

The Sweden Scene

' ] + tunnel in Torsby is a 1.3 km loop with varying terrain including uphills and downhills.

The tunnel is kept at a controlled temperature of -5 C. It was a great experience to ski in perfect hard wax conditions in the middle of the summer. Torsbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roller ski trails start just outside the tunnel. Some days we had workouts half on snow and half roller skiing. This gave the athletes the opportunity to transfer good snow skiing technique to roller skiing.

The roller ski track at Sjousjen, Norway, was unlike any roller skiing in Canada. The 4 km track felt like being on ski trails with steep uphills and fast technical downhills with banked corners.

The Swedish Elite Junior Camp in Idrefjall was the highlight of the trip. It was a challenging camp with a heavy load of both volume and intensity. Training alongside the Swedish Junior National Team was humbling, motivating and inspiring.

Everyone at the camp was friendly and welcoming to us Canadians. The coaches were especially accommodating, conducting the whole camp in English for our 7 ' ] Â&#x201D;

One interesting aspect of the trip was being immersed in the Scandinavian ski culture.

We visited the ski trails at Lillehammer, Holmenkollen, and Falun, venues that have hosted World Championships and Olympics. We also visited the ski museum in Holmenkollen. It was interesting to see how the sport developed and how Scandinavian

& % 7& + ' We also had the chance to explore the major cities of Oslo and Stockholm. We enjoyed roaming the narrow cobblestoned streets and seeing the beautiful historic architecture.

The afternoons in the towns and cities were spent window shopping and experiencing

coffee break and treat. The cafes we visited did not disappoint. All the food in Sweden was delicious even though at times it was different from what we are used to. Some of our favourites were the breads and the variety of Wasa crackers, lingonberry sauce and of course Swedish candy. Being immersed in Swedish culture was a great experience.

In 2015 the Flag Point rankings for the sport of cross country skiing show that both the BC Women’s and Men’s teams were ranked #1 in Canada (10 points each), and that BC was ranked #1 province/territory overall. This was a best-ever Canada Winter Games performance for Cross Country BC!

CCBC SKI PREPARATION WORKSHOP December 18-20, 2015. Prince George, BC. This workshop covers shop set up, what goes in the tool box, maintenance of tools, ski selection, wax application, testing procedures (grip & glide), hand turning and stone grinding.

Regarding the courses, it would be natural to think that the higher level courses (T2T and above focused on athletes aged 13 and older) would be the most applicable for those coaching athletes 15+. I found the intro courses just as valuable if not more since it has been so long since I entered sport and the concepts still apply to older high end athletes. One example is the taxonomy of motivations people generally participate in sport (straight from the NCCP ICC manual). The desire for: 1. ' 3.

COACHING PROGRAM (2) deliver a well-rounded sport program with an emphasis on skill development to children nine to 12 years of age (the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Learning to Trainâ&#x20AC;? stage of development).

MANDATORY QUALIFICATION Standards for Cross-Country Skiing Did you know that coaches are required to have minimum training in order to supervise, instruct or coach ski activities for children under the age of 16 years? If an individual is teaching someone to ski, they must have this training. If an individual is just helping the group (serving hot chocolate, following behind the last skier in the group as they ski around a trail, helping to put on gloves and skis), they do not require minimum training.

The L2T (Dryland) Workshop is the third step in the NCCP progression. Coaches are taught about developmental age, physical literacy, team building, athletic components [ 7

own sport program, adventure-based activities (yearround), roller-skiing and planning a practice. Prerequisite: Community Coach Workshop.

NCCP Intro to Community Coaching Workshop

The L2T (On-Snow) Workshop is the second half of the L2T program and the fourth step in the NCCP progression.

This workshop is designed to train coaches on team management, supporting athletes at a competition, teaching and learning, equipment selection, ski preparation and how to effectively teach ski technique. Prerequisite: L2T (Dryland) Workshop.

18.25 hours. The workshop fee for CCC/CCBC members is $100.00.

The â&#x20AC;&#x153;ICCâ&#x20AC;? Workshop is designed to provide parents and other beginner coaches with basic information and a

' Â&#x2019; teaches coaches how to deliver a series of age-appropriate skill development sessions under the supervision of more experienced coaches. The orientation is to skiers of all age groups with an emphasis on working with children under six years of age (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Active Startâ&#x20AC;? stage of athlete development). Coaches are taught basic coaching skills, how to teach the fundamentals of technique, growth and development considerations, how to create a motivating learning environment, and how to set up a ski playground.

It is entry level, and there are no prerequisites except enthusiasm and the minimum age requirement of 14 years.

16.5 hours. The workshop fee for CCC/CCBC members is $100.00.

NCCP CCI Advanced (T2T) Workshops The CCI Advanced program provides tools and develops skills that a coach can use to (1) teach athletes how to build an aerobic base, speed and strength and further develop

their developmental age, and (2) design and deliver an annual sport program that takes into consideration optimal trainability and the maturity/readiness (physical, mental, cognitive and emotional maturity) of individual athletes 12 to 16 years of age (the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Training to Trainâ&#x20AC;? stage of development).

10 hours. The workshop fee for CCC/CCBC members is $80.00.

NCCP Community Coaching Workshop The â&#x20AC;&#x153;CCâ&#x20AC;? Workshop is the second step in the NCCP coach education program. It provides essential training for coaches delivering effective skill development programs for children six to nine years of age (the â&#x20AC;&#x153;FUNdamentalsâ&#x20AC;? stage of skier development). This program is designed to train coaches to teach children technical skills, select games that reinforce the technical skill being taught, design and lead on-snow sessions, select and prepare equipment for young children, and make learning FUN. This workshop includes on-snow sessions. Successful completion of the ICC Workshop, enthusiasm and a minimum age of 14 years are the only prerequisites.

can be run on a 40 AMP service, Kaegi says. To put this in perspective, a typical home requires a 100 AMP service.

In addition to the new trail lights, the RNSC, in partnership with the school board, recently acquired 50 pairs of cross country skis and boots, both skate and classic. The equipment will be used for school programs and will also be available for rent at the Lodge. Along with the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Skill Development programs and annual events, the RNSC will also play host to the Teck BC Cup #2, a two day race for athletes of all ages, on January 24 and 25, 2015. This is a big event for Revelstoke, with organizers anticipating as many as 400 athletes.

It looks like itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a great season with lots of new opportunities at the Club.

ROSSLAND SKI CLUB THE ROSSLAND SKI CLUB, although only organized in its present form in the summer of 1933, is already one of the foremost clubs in the interior of British Columbia. Situated in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains, at an altitude of 3,400 feet, Rossland has long been a paradise

+ tournament in Canada was held here in 1898; and for many years afterwards the Rossland Ski Club was awarded the championship of Canada, as is proved by the engraving on the Jeldnes Trophy, which is still in Rossland.

The season of 1934-35 was a highly successful one. Under the energetic leadership of Trygre Nora, president, and Ivor Moen, secretary, a

city, making an ideal headquarters. A jumping hill was cleared close to the cabin, on which it is hoped that jumps up to 160 feet will be possible. The club membership was increased to nearly 150 during the winter and it has indeed been gratifying to watch the excellent progress made by the beginners.

Athletes must compete in a Zone Trial in order to qualify (refer to page 34 of this magazine for information on the Zone Trials). All athletes competing at the Games must be a member in good standing with Cross Country BC. Age Categories: Skiers born in 2002 may compete in the Midget or Juvenile age category. Skiers born in 2001 must compete in the Juvenile category. Competitors may only be entered in one age category at the Games.

Para-Nordic Events: Para-Nordic events will be offered for male/female SitSki (LW2-9) and male/female Standing /Visually Impaired (LW2-9; B1-3) athletes. Athletes 14 to 35 years of age as of December 31st, 2015 are eligible.

Quota for Cross-Country Skiing: A total of 82 competitors (41 male and 41 female) and 16 coaches (eight male and eight female) are permitted for the sport of cross-country skiing. Zone Team Composition: eight zones - eight athletes per zone (four male and four female), and two coaches per zone (one male and one female). The remaining 18 positions (nine male and nine female) will be allocated to zones according to the total participation numbers of eligible athletes in the Zone Trials.

Registration Fee: All athletes that qualify at the Zone Trials to attend the BC Winter Games must pay a Games Registration Fee ($175.00) prior to January 18th, 2016. Cheques are to be made payable to 'Cross Country BC.' Fees will be collected by the Zone Representatives.

Kids Programs FUNDAMENTALS The Jackrabbit Program, which is directed at skiers in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;FUNdamentalsâ&#x20AC;? stage of development (children six to nine years), is the second level of the program. It has been developed in parallel with the second level of the competency-based Â&#x2122;Â&#x2022;Â&#x2022;Â&#x153;

skiers this age. INTRO TO COMPETITION Since the introduction of skating, higher technology equipment and new race formats such as sprinting, pursuits and mass starts, cross country skiing has picked up speed and grown in excitement.

Cross Country Canada (CCC) offers three special programs to introduce elementary school-age kids to the fun and satisfaction of competitive skiing.

SKI TOURNAMENT A Ski Tournament is a day of special activities which includes a Terrain Park Relay, a Mad Dash (an individual sprint race - the event in which Chandra Crawford won her 2006 Olympic gold medal!), and a variety of games.

The objective of the event is to encourage participation, teamwork and good technique.

Teck BC Cup Series The Teck BC Cup Series is the premier race series for cross-country skiers in British Columbia. It is the principle component of the athlete development model for high performance crosscountry skiing, as well as a family oriented event that encourages participation from skiers of all age groups and a wide range of skill levels.

There are three special features built into the Series, the BC Championship Club Trophy that recognize the achievements of club teams, the BC Cup Series Overall Awards that recognize individual performances and the College/University Aggregate Awards that recognize individual performances for full time post-secondary students.

BC Championship Club Trophy: The Teck BC Championships is a two-day event with an ‘interval start’ (Saturday) and ‘relay start’ (Sunday). Club skiers of all ages and skill levels participate in order to help their club achieve points. The club that accumulates the most points is the winner of the Club Trophy. Guidelines for this program are available from the Cross Country BC website. This is the most exciting competitive event of the season and a great opportunity to introduce young skiers to the Teck BC Cup Series!!!

With the introduction of the new licence CCC will be able to more accurately track the development of young skiers in the T2T and above levels of the CCC Competition Model.

CCC-AltaGas Club Coaching Support Program The AltaGas Club Coaching Support Program (ACCSP) is a Cross Country Canada initiative aimed at encouraging more full-time professional club coaching positions, and thereby increasing the number of cross country ski clubs delivering year-round, full-service programs. In 2015 two BC clubs were each awarded a $30 000 ACCSP grant (over three years) to help them hire a full time coach. The two recipients were the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club of Prince George and the Golden Nordic Ski Club of Golden. The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club has announced that they have hired Graeme Moore, former head coach of the Red Deer Nordic Ski Club in Alberta, and the Golden Nordic Ski Club have hired former National Development Centre (Thunder Bay, Ontario) athlete and part time club coach Ghislain de Leplante.

Canadian Rocky Mountains where Canmore will once again serve as the hub for an exciting mix of traditional and innovative competition formats.

With no major championship event (Olympics or FIS World Ski Championships) on the calendar in 2015-16, the Tour du Canada 2016 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; FIS Cross-Country World Cup will be the pinnacle event of the season, and will also determine the winners of the prestigious FIS crystal globes. In order to maximize the number of participants the World Cup Sub-committee agreed to move the tour to the last World Â&#x2022; Â&#x161;

6 Scandinavian events and the season-ending World Cup Finals.

This tour-format event will highlight some of Canada's most iconic destinations, kicking off with three "urban" downtown venues in the East and concluding in the majestic Canadian Rockies in Canmore.

Ottawa's historic Parliament Hill will serve as a spectacular backdrop for the opening. Gatineau's downtown sprint event will be staged in Jacques Cartier Park beside the beautiful Canadian Museum of History.

The second stage is slated for MontrĂŠal, with Mont Royal to provide a challenging playground for the world's top cross country athletes.

Next, the tour will move to QuĂŠbec City (photo at right) which will leverage the successful Sprint Quebec 2012 World Cup in a spectacular city setting adjacent to the Plaines of Abraham and the
