Accessible from every corner of Europe with only a few hours drive, especially with the recent additions to its modern highway system, or with just an airline flight of an hour or two, the Croatian coast really is your closest vacation destination in the European Mediterranean. With its beautifully preserved nature, pleasant climate, a clean sea with more than a hundred beaches on which blue flags fly (the international ecological symbol of cleanliness of sea and beaches), with its rich cultural and historical heritage and its delectable local cuisine with unmistakeably Mediterranean flavours, Croatia is well on the way to becoming, if not quite the best, then certainly the most attractive camping destination in the Mediterranean. In addition to their size, facilities they offer and the beauty of their surroundings – ranging from the veritable small camping towns that predominate in Istria (camp settlements with a wide range of infrastuctural amenities and attractions for leisure time) - to the smaller camps, situated in the gardens and courtyards of private homeowners, most frequently found in Dalmatia - Croatian camps provide a wide scope of activities for all target groups - from families with children and older people seeking a peaceful, high-quality vacation, to the younger, more adventurous guests seeking a more dynamic vacation.

Do you love an active vacation in unison with nature? Do you prefer dreaming in the shade of fragrant pine trees to staying in a comfortable room in a luxury hotel? Do you believe in the power of truly being in touch with Nature? Then you are in the right place! Welcome to Croatia, a unique camping and caravaning destination, your nearest part of the Mediterranean! What makes Croatia such a special place on the map of Europe? To begin with, here are a few details: Croatia has 5,835 kilometers of richly indented coastline, it boasts an incredible number of island and isles – 1,185 to be precise, and as many as 8 national parks. In addition to the enviable number of protected areas, nature parks and nature reserves, Croatia also has seven localitiesthat are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List: the Old city of Dubrovnik, Diocletian’s Palace in Split, the historic town core of Trogir, the early Christian complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, the Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik, the Stari Grad plain on Hvar and the Plitvice Lakes. On the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity are the Festivity of Saint Blaise, lace-making in Lepoglava, Hvar and Pag, the annual Carnival bell ringers’ pageant from the Kastav region, Procession “Za Križen”, (‘following the Cross’) on the Island of Hvar, two-part singing and playing (music) in the Istrian scale, in Istria and Hrvatsko Primorje, the annual spring procession of ‘Kraljice/Ljelje’ (queens) from Gorjani, the traditional manufacture of wooden toys in the Hrvatsko zagorje region, the Sinjska alka - a knights’ tournament in Sinj, the gingerbread craft from northern Croatia and and Croatian traditional music including the “Bećarac”

from Slavonia, Baranja and Sriem and the traditional dance “Nijemo kolo from Dalmatinska zagora. Croatia is among the countries with the most protected intangible cultural heritage elements recorded on the UNESCO list. Ojkanje singing features on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. Taking great pride in its title of being a "land of a thousand islands" and blessed with a singularly beautiful maritime landscape crowned by numerous picture perfect, small stone-built towns dotted across the mainland coastal aera and the islands, Croatia is indeed a precious garden of Europe which captivates with its indigenous quality. It is precisely along this coastline and across the islands, where over 100 beaches fly the prestigious blue flag of ecological soundness, that 98% of our camping facilities are located. With its mild, pleasant Mediterranean climate and the extraordinarily rich and varied landscapes of its continental regions - from the magical green hills and mountains to its tumbling river rapids, lakes and nature parks - Croatia is a country offering unforgettable experiences. A veritable hidden garden practically tailored for every true camper. To everything already mentioned above, we should add that every year, and mostly in the summer months, this country stages numerous exhibitions film, theater, music, dance and folklore festivals, as well as a wide variety of other cultural events which include visits by the foremost world and local artists who perform in historic venues like the Pula Arena, the Split Peristile and the walls of Dubrovnik. There is also a wide selection Plitvice

of small and charming popular festivities of traditional character, one of the essential parts of which is savouring the light, healthy and most definitely delectable local Mediterranean cuisine, topped with outstanding quality of olive oils and washed down with the heavenly, locally produced wines. To put it in a nutshell, Croatia truly is a country with a long list of reasons to visit it and to come back to! Kornati

ISTRIA Premantura

Multi-cultural and hospitable, Istria is a wondrous Croatian peninsula which, in a small area brings together, in a very special and gratifying manner, a multitude of diverse attractions. Its crystal clear sea (the nearest warm sea for many Europeans), its shoreline and beaches, its bustling ports, marinas, lively fishing boats and smooth stone streets speak with a genuine charm of the warm Mediterranean, while the picturesque medieval towns perched atop the hills of the Istrian hinterland exude peace and mellowness of the continent. Whereas along the shore, in Pula, Rovinj, Vrsar, Poreč, Novigrad or even in Umag, the legacy of both the Antiquity and the magnificent Serenissima, or rather Venice, is readily identifiable, in the heartland of Istria the spirit of central Europe is clear to see and feel. Istria is one of the most developed tourist regions in the Mediterranean, its ideal climate ensuring a full five month bathing season. It has to be stressed, though, that tourism in Istria has long since ceased being a seasonal activity and has become a way of life the year-round, which makes it a truly perfect destination able to meet the wishes of every type of visitor. Strung along its entire coastline, like a necklace of pearls, are numerous tourist centres, each with its own special story, attractions and facilities and, needless to say, its very own charm. Wherever you go, from the famous tennis centre of Umag in the north whose ATP tennis tournament (the Croatia Open) is now written in large on the map of the world’s sporting events – to the idyllic Novigrad, distinguished Poreč of St. Euphrasius and unforgettable Rovinj - the miniature Venice of Croatia - through the famous naturist center of Koversada in Vrsar, and all the way to the south where, on the eastern shore, the fantastic Pula, Medulin, and Rabac have sprung up, there is no shortage of memorable and exciting places to see and experience. Rovinj

Though please remember, Istria does not offer just sea, sunny shores, romantic bays, seaports, terraces where you can dance to your heart’s content, coffee shops, bars, superb restaurants and wine cellars! It entices you to step onto the fairyland roads leading to the small, medieval towns crowning the mystical, undulating landscapes. Climb up at least one of those hills. Be it Motovun, Grožnjan, Završje, Oprtalj, or even the smallest town in the world - Hum - a walk down their slabbed streets will turn into a magical trip through

a history all of its own. Though it may seem they all look alike, in reality each one is in fact one of a kind. So don your curiosity hat and stroll, roam, look here, there, everywhere – and discover for yourself. Visit the magnificent Pula amphitheater - the Arena - where an international film festival has been taking place every summer for over 50 years and which has and still does play host to some of the greatest artists and stars of the world of music – both clasical and popular. If, however, glamourous atmosphere is not what you seek, then wander off to the film festival in the enchanting Motovun, or the Festival of Early Music in Dvigrad – the city of spirits, or the Festival of Dance and Mime Theatre in unforgetable Svetvinčenat. And then, there are classical music concerts in the Basilica of St. Euphrasius, jazz in the Poreč Collection of Stone Monuments and Fragments, the Golden Lion International Closet Theater Festival in Umag, the international jazz festival in Grožnjan, the Novigrad Music Nights, the celebrated Rovinj Grisia, or the lively and jolly folk festivities in many fishing villages. For the younger generation, there is no shortage of events either: the festival of creative media, Pula

Media Mediterranean; rock festivals Viva la Pola and Art & Music, and the Sea Splash Reggae Festival in Pula. To those of rather different interests, as for instance cycling, Istria has some 60 marked cycling paths covering about 2,600 kilometers which allow you to slowly and at your leisure discover the wonders of the peninsula. Whether you take the Jules Verne Route towards Pazin; the truffle

UMAG • NOVIGRAD ISTRIA

Situated on a peninsula, the town of Umag, with its beautiful historic centre, arose on a small peninsula in the transition period between the late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Today, the town is known throughout the world as the venue of a supreme sporting event - the “Croatia Open” ATP tennis tournament. Despite the fact that it is now practically a synonym for tourism and sports, Umag suffers no shortage of either cultural events or monuments to its rich historical Novigrad heritage. If you go into the center of town and visit the westernmost city tower, which is both the oldest construction in the city and the site of the city museum, it will become clear that besides its charming coffee shops, terraces, snug taverns and restaurants, this town offers much more than sport and recreational tourism. Having grown on a tiny isle that was linked to the mainland as late as the 18th century, and first mentioned in 599 A.D., Novigrad has succeeded in preserving its beautiful medieval structure to this day. The contemporary Novigrad is home to a beautiful modern marina, excellent restaurants, taverns and charming terraces on which you can leisure away in true Mediterranean style and enjoy nights filled with blues and jazz. Do not forget to visit, if only for a moment, the municipal loggia from which a view unfolds towards the open sea. Those who, in addition to the usual agenda of sea, sun, fun and fine food, are also interested in the traces of the past, may certainly want to visit the newly renovated Novigrad Collection of Stone Monuments.

Poreč

POREČ AND SURROUNDINGS One of the favorite destinations for many people, with numerous modern tourist estates nestling amidst fragrant, wooded coves and bays, Poreština is one of the largest tourist destinations in Croatia, and one boasting the largest concentration of camps on the Adriatic. The Poreč area is well known for its wide ranging palette of tourist and recreational services and facilities, with special emphasis on water sports and tennis. In the city itself, where the material and spiritual traces of great cultures are visible all around, where cultural events – in addition to those taking place in the famous basilica of St.Euphrasius and in the Museum housing the Colection of Stone Monuments – spill into the streets and squares, one only has to take a stroll through its old nucleus to feel the strong atmosphere of the Mediterranean of centuries gone by. Having grown out of the layout of an ancient Roman forum with its characteristic construction organized around two main axes, one of which - the street known as Decumanus – still is the city’s main artery, Poreč is indeed a town in which every step is a veritable journey through time. In addition to its rich heritage from the Antiquity period, Poreč is probably best known for the renowned Basilica of St. Euphrasius - a three-nave cathedral adorned with glorious gold mosaics, which is the most beautiful example of the early Byzantine architecture from the 6th century still preserved. Since 1997, the cathedral has been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Are you interested in a holiday in camps located along the seacoast, away from the bustle of the city, right next to small, idyllic villages surrounded by fertile fields instead of sports fields and amusement centres, but which you can easily reach in just 15 minutes? Then, welcome to Tar and Funtana - two Istrian villages that are well known to many campers. Since the industrious residents of Tar and Funtana have for centuries been equally successful in fishing and agriculture, in addition to the tranquil and gentle landscapes you will be able to bask in the warm welcome of your hosts and savour a truly superb cuisine in over 50 restaurants, cellars and taverns, inns and pubs.

VRSAR Whether it was because of the intoxicating red wine, or the Mediterranean romance of a small fishing village, or perhaps because of some mysterious beautiful woman, the celebrated Casanova came to Vrsar several times. Just nine kilometres from Poreč, Vrsar is a beautiful tourist destination whose once small but secure port is now a home to a modern marina with 200 berths. It is separated from Rovinj by the 14 kilometre long Lim Channel where, among other marine cultures, delicious Lim oysters are farmed. Together with the nearby Funtana, Vrsar has small 18 uninhabited islands – ideal spots for all those who do not like crowded beaches. It is no wonder, then, that back in 1961 one of these small islands – the famous Koversada – was chosen as the starting point for the development of a world famous naturist center. With its charming, winding narrow streets within the confines once defined by defensive walls, and its houses of different historic styles, the

ROVINJ

Have you already heard of the little Venice on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean? Yes, that is Rovinj. Without exaggerating, it can be said that Rovinj is the real jewel of Istria which proudly carries the reputation of being one of the most beautiful tourist centres in the Mediterranean. If you take a walk along its steep, narrow medieval streets of smooth stone where practically every other doorway is an entrance to an art gallery or atelier, and if you look at all that beauty of closely huddled mansions and their innumerable chimneys, you will be forever enamoured of this city. If you climb to St. Euphemia, the white Baroque church of St. Euphemia crowning the town of which she is the patron saint, and whose body had miraculously floated here across the sea in its stone sarcophagus, or so the 9th century legend tells us, you will realise that such a lovely sight is not often seen. With its rich fishing history, its picturesque port filled with wooden fishing smacks, boats and rowboats, and as many as 14 small islands, among which the nearby Red Island and St. Catherine deserve special mention, Rovinj is an example of a typical Mediterranean town which today breathes with VALDALISO Camping special artistic charm. PULA • MEDULIN ISTRIA

Pula

PULA – MEDULIN Have your heard of a city built on seven hills boasting a magificent amphitheater – and which is not Rome? Yes, you are now at the doors of Pula, the largest city in Istria. They named it the "old enchantress with a thousand faces" that has for centuries been seducing its visitors, because for many who pass through its Golden Gate (the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii) just once, or take one stroll around its glorious 1st century BC amphitheatre, it is often enough to draw them back and back again. This is a city which charms, in the full sense of the word, with its rich ancient heritage. Every step of the way one is reminded of Cassiodorus words that here the patricians of Rome lived a "life worthy of gods." At the same time, Pula is the largest political, economic, university and cultural centre of Istria. In addition to its famous ancient monuments and its striking Austro-Hungarian heritage, Pula takes great pride in its Museum of Archeology and History, the Istrian National Theatre and its International Film Festival that has been staged in the Amphitheatre for over 50 years. If one bears in mind that in the 19th century Pula was also the main naval port for the Austro-Hungarian fleet, and that the famous Irish writer James Joyce dropped anchor here for a while, it will become still clearer that one has entered deep into the fabric of a long and glorious history of a city that celebrates both its Mediterranean heritage and its full blooded affiliation with the spirit of Central Europe. Most of the camps are located about 10 kilometres southeast of Pula along the gorgeous coastline of southern Istria, close to present-day Medulin - in ancient times known as Mutila. If you follow the sweet fragrance of pine trees, you can discover a wonderful 2 kilometre sandy beach, and a little further on, in a cove on the Vižula peninsula, a very attractive archeological site – the remains of a luxurious Roman summer residence which, legend has it, was occasionally visited by Crispin and Helena, the son and wife of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Fažana, situated on a low lying shore, well protected from the sea by the Brijuni Archipelago National Park and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, is a locality known since the Roman times, when it went by the name of Vasianum – which was a manufacturer that produced amphorae and other types of vessels. As Fažana, it has always been a fishing village, the small quay of which teems with life. It is from here that boats depart for the Brijuni National Park. Brijuni

Rabac

RABAC Rabac is located beneath the densely packed and beautifully ornate Venetian palaces in the old quarter of the town of Labin. It lies in a small bay, well protected from the strong north wind known as the bura. Although tourism in Rabac really began only after the Second World War,

OLIVA Camping

when numerous tourist hotels were being built, its residents - who until then had been mainly occupied with fishing, sailing and olive cultivation soon turned the town into the leading tourist centre on the eastern shore of Istria and the Gulf of Kvarner. Because of its beautiful pebble beaches – quite different from those in the south and on the western coast of Istria - its fine fish restaurants, and its sea air filled with the fragrances of a variety of Mediterranean plants like sage and immortelle (Helichrysum arenarium), Rabac has lately become a very popular summer destination for families with small children.

Opatija

Are you dreaming of an ideal place for a holiday where you would be able to cast off from the shore towards sunbathed islands, and then sail back to the mainland seeking peace and quiet on a mountain top – and that in a single day? Would you like to stroll along a sunny, fashionable riviera and then, whenever you wish, in no more than 10 kilometres, exchange it for ascetic peace and fresh mountain air in the company of eagles, while your lungs soak up the clean air of fragrant forests in protected nature parks? If you do, welcome to Kvarner. Alongside Istria, Kvarner is the most popular camping region. The majority of its camps are on islands, with only a limited number being located on the mainland. If you are yearning for the silence of beautiful coves and the solitude of island beaches, head for the blue waters of Kvarner and the mythical islands, the Apsyrtídes from the famous legend of the Argonauts – the islands of Cres, Lošinj, Rab and Krk. Not only will you be able to enjoy the epic sight of wind bleached cliffs, of coves, inlets and crevices that plunge into the deep blue of the Adriatic, the charming stone houses, the intoxicating fragrances of lavender, sage, pine and the rest of this unique flora with over 2,700 other species of plants, but these islands, like a true Arcadia, will reveal themselves as a refuge for a significant number of animal species. While the towns of Lošinj, Osor on Cres, Baška or Vrbnik on Krk guard the remains of their rich heritage that can be seen at every corner, such as the Bašćanska ploča (the plaque of Baška) - a carved stone monument of the Croatian language dating from the year 1100, the craggy cliffs of Cres provide a nesting ground for the protected griffon vulture, while in the waters below, you can watch dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals larking about.

Opatija

From MOŠČENIĆKA DRAGA to NOVI VINODOLSKI Opatija truly represents a unique chapter in Croatian tourism. It has become a synonym for a fashionable riviera, lined with beautiful villas of different historical architectural styles, vacation facilities, hotels, pavilions, parks and formal gardens. Opatija grew along the narrow easter coastal belt at the foot of Učka Mountain, which protects it from rain and cold winds. The town is blessed with especially mild and pleasant climate and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Should you wish to look around the town, enjoying the sight of its elegant buildings and luxuriously landscaped and meticulously maintained parks, take a stroll down the 12 kilometres long promenade by the sea, popularly known as Lungomare, streching from Volosko to Lovran, and Opatija will shine in its full glow. If you are looking for a particularly healing, clean air, carry on towards the Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera which has been designated as a health resort as early as 1906, while its magnificent Hotel Therapia, built in 1895, was declared to be one of the most beautiful hotel buildings on the Croatian coast. Novi Vinodolski, a small town situated on the main coastal highway, is a typical tourist resort of the Kvarner area. Known for its large sandy beach in the Lišanj Bay, surrounded by thick pine woods, and for its seaside promenade lined with Secessionist-style villas, Novi Vinodolski is tailor made for a family holiday. Its beaches are organised and maintained to the highest standards and easily accessible to even the youngest of family members. The choice of sports and recreational facilities is wide ranging and varied and there are excellent restaurants and taverns, as well as a wealth of entertainment programmes – the International Summer Carnival, which takes place in August, being among the most popular.

Although Cres does not have a particularly indented coastline, you will find several fantastic coves and secluded beaches there, and one very special phenomenon - Lake Vrana. sea, while its bottom is below the sea bed at the depth of 74 m. One more point for all the lovers of flora and fauna: in addition to abandoning yourself to the intoxicating fragrances of Mediterranean vegetation that the island is full of, you can visit a special ornitholgical reserve and one of the rare refuges and nesting areas for the griffon vulture. The island of Lošinj, which is actually comprised of Mali (Small) Lošinj and Veliki (Big) Lošinj, is separated from Cres by an 11 metre wide channel spanned by a bridge. Owing to their mild Mediterranean climate and lush evergreen vegetation, the two islands were designated as climate resorts in 1892. As the northernmost point of Europe where, in addition to the registered 1200 species of indigenous plants, the highly sensitive lemons and bougainvillea grow as a part of the natural environment, Lošinj truly is an oasis of a microclimate. Added to this, in 1999, an ancient monument of inestimable value was dicovered in the waters off Lošinj – a lifesize bronze statue of the athlete Apoksiomenon from the 4th century BC. Other attractions of the island include colonies of dolphins which can often be seen around small marinas, its rich sacral heritage, its jazz festival - and the widely known Osor Music Evenings - all of which make Lošinj a veritable treasure trove just waiting to be discovered.

Krk

KRK Krk is the largest Croatian island with 68 settlements and an airport. It is linked to the mainland by the large Krk Bridge. With its well indented coastline ringed by more than 20 isles, rocks and reefs, its numerous small coves, bays and natural pebble beaches like Puntarska draga and Solin - also known for the medicinal mud, Krk has long been recognized as an attractive tourist destination. Its pleasant and mild Mediterranean climate, with more than 2,500 hours of sunlight per year, make it one of the sunniest parts of Europe. The best known tourist resorts are Baška, Krk, Malinska, Njivice, Punat, Omišalj and Vrbnik. Abounding in karst formations such as caves and holes like Biserujka near Dobrinj, Krk also has plenty of fertile fields on which its residents raise livestock and cultivate grapes and olives. Needles to say, fishing has always been a vital part of life on the island. The wealth of this island led the ancient Romans to call it insula aurea (the golden island). In addition to sheep’s cheese, honey made from sage and its fine olive oil, Krk is also the home of the famous white wine, Vrbnička žlahtina. If your trip brings you to Krk, you will enjoy all of its summer SLAMNI Camping and sea delights, but also remember to take in its many other events - from the small island fishing fiestas organized by every community to the summer performances at Kamplina, the klapa event or jazz festivals.

Rab

RAB The island of Rab is not only replete with Mediterranean vegetation in its full wealth - its very specific characteristic being the omnipresent fragrance of immortelle that grows on rock and cliffs – but it is also covered with rich woods of indigenous holly oak trees that, come the hot summers, provide heavenly shade. Rab is especially proud of its epithet, “felix,” (happy), which it acquired back in the ancient times, and it is from those times that Rab has been a developed, civilised urban centre with thermal spas, temples and a theater. It is readily identifiable from afar by the four bell towers rising above the town towards the heavens. Rab is the birthplace of the famous stonemason Marin who – while on the other side of the Adriatic, on the shores of the Apennine peninsula, close to today’s town of Rimini as the deacon to the local bishop – built a small church and with it laid the foundations of the future city of San Marino and the small republic of the same name. Additionally, it was here, on Rab, that one of the first naturists, King Edward VIII, protected from the prying eyes went skinny dipping with Mrs. Wallis Simpson - his famous love worthy of abdication. In other words, Rab has been a place for historic decisions. If you want a real Mediterranean island vacation, far from worries, or if you want to leave footprints in the heavenly sandy beach of San Marino to the accompaniment of the sweet chirruping of cicadas, then welcome to the happy, sunny island of Rab!

FROM SENJ TO THE PLITVICE LAKES Welcome to the Arcadian landscapes of the Lika-Senj County, home of the most famous, the oldest and the most popular of Croatia’s eight national parks - the Plitvice Lakes. It is the only natural sight among the cultural sights in Croatia – which was among the first in the world, in the now distant 1979, to be included into the UNSECO list of cultural and natural heritage. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a natural phenomenon without parallel, a place where nature released the reins of its imagination. Although the Plitvice Lakes National Park is known mostly for its travertine forming waterfalls and 16 cascading lakes that take one’s breath away, it also has many other attractions, such as a variety of interesting geomorphological formations, forest habitats and grasslands, flora and fauna. Today, the park also offers its visitors ample opportunity to learn about the lakes, guided by specially programmed tours, through a variety of activities such as hiking, boat rides and rides on the small, electric powered panoramic train, photography, rowing, rafting, canoeing, rock climbing and skiing. The land of the Illyrians (the Iapodi tribe) in prehistoric and ancient times, the silent, unspoiled and almost mythical natural environment of Lika, today still provides refuge for endangered rare types of birds, for wolves and bears. It therefore comes as no surprise that the bear reserve in Kutarevo is becoming an ever more popular tourist attraction. It is this magnificent nature of Lika that is the birthplace of one of the world’s greatest scientific geniuses, Nikola Tesla, whose museum, opened on the 150th anniversary of his birth, can be visited in his native village of Smiljan.

Then, of course, there is the town of Karlovac, built in the shape of a six-pointed star on the four rivers, set in the middle of a wonderful realm of water. Zadar Region

ZADAR REGION

Although it may seem quite immodest for this area to be called God’s true inspiration, the Zadar region, with about 300 islands and islets and two freshwater lakes right next to the sea, is a land of immense natural beauty. If you harbour any doubts about this, you only have to look at Paklenica National Park and its other parks -- Velebit, Telašćica and Lake Vrana -- and the region’s beauty will shine in all of its brilliance. With its mountains, lakes and waterfalls, through its canyons, cliffs, and caves, and on to the azure sea and the magical islands filled with small picturesque ports and romantic beaches, this area has always drawn attention. If you have ever imagined a holiday that allows you to swim in emerald green waters, to bask in the sun on the sandy and pebble beaches of beautiful stone towns of the Zadar Riviera, and to experience the most marvelous sunsets while sampling tempting morsels of sheep’s cheese and a heavZadar

maraska sour cherries), you are in the right place! Besides its ancient forum and rich religious heritage, Zadar today is proud of the fact that it was the first city on Croatian soil where a university was founded (by the Dominicans in 1396). It is a region whose rich and glorious 3,000 TURISTIČKA ZAJEDNICA ŽUPANIJE ZADARSKE (Tourist Board of the County of Zadar) HR-23000 Zadar, Sv. Leopolda B. PAG If you think that a visit to Pag spells only enjoying oneself to the chirruping of cicadas on the beach, in naked sun, and a terrific night life, you are mistaken. Built to a strict plan and fortified, the 15th century Renaissance city of Pag, which today administratively belongs to the Zadar County, is full of beautiful medieval mansions, carved door frames, small balconies and coats of arms. It will charm you with its lively and picturesque Mediterranean hustle and bustle. Take a walk and enjoy these wonders in stone and should you happen to be here at the end of July, do not miss the traditional carnival, when the locals dress in their old folk costumes and to the sound of the town brass band sing and dance their ancient songs and dances all over the town. And last, but by no means least, do not forget the famous lace of Pag with its amazing arabesques which once were woven from the agave thread by the dilligent hands of nuns and the celebrated Pag cheese made from the milk of sheep grazing solely on the island’s aromatic Mediterranean pastures.

Pašman

ZADAR RIVIERA Welcome to the Zadar Riviera and to Zadar, the 3,000-year old economic and cultural center of northern Dalmatia, a city with the largest researched Roman forum on the eastern side of the Adriatic. Zadar also has unforgettable early medieval churches, such as the Churches of St. Donatus, St. Anastasia, and St. Chrysogonus not far from which is the oldest Croatian royal city of Nin with the smallest cathedral in the world – the church of the Holy Cross measures only 36 steps. To the sound of the sea organ – the architectural wonder of the Zadar waterfront, from which – as the famous Alfred Hitchcock once said – the most beautiful sunset in the world can be seen, you can savour a slice of the Pag cheese and a glass of the famous Maraschino liqueur – made from the autochtonous Maraska sour cherry – and enjoy the blessings of this area and the fruit of the land of unique divine inspirations. This area is also a favorite destination for family tourism since its many calm, shallow sandy beaches are tailor-made for children and non-swimmers, and the proximity of the four national parks in this region makes it a still more attractive proposition. Rising up directly opposite Zadar, separated from it by the few nautical miles wide Zadar Channel, is the island of Ugljan (52km2, and 75 km of indented shoreline). In addition to being covered with the evergreen pine woods and the characteristic fragrant macchia of the Mediterranean, this is an island of grape vines, figs and olives. Over 2,000-year tradition of olive cultivation has left thousands of olive trees on the island that are still yielding oil of exceptional quality and aroma. Another member of the Zadar archipelgao, linked to Ugljan by a bridge at Ždrelac, is the island of Pašman (63 square kilometers and 65 kilometers of indented coastline). Covered by the characteristic Mediterranean cultures, predominantly vineyards and olive groves, as well as fields of plants typical for the area, Pašman really is reminiscent of an Arcadian refuge of the Mediterranean. With 10 or so small islands scattered around it, its beautiful sandy and pebble beaches, and a sea that – due to the specific current which in this part changes direction every six hours – is one of the cleanest in the whole of the Adriatic, Pašman is also an ideal place for all kinds of water sports.

Sv. Filip i Jakov

BIOGRAD RIVIERA Once the coronation city of Croatian kings in which Koloman, the Croatian-Hungarian king was crowned in 1102, Biograd na Moru (Biograd-on-the-Sea) is today known as a tourist and nautical centre in the very centre of the Adriatic coast. The small town has grown on a peninsula surrounded by modern marinas and a water front, a place that provides an unforgettable view of one of the most picturesque straits in Croatia -- the Pašman Channel and the small islands scattered through it. Swimming in the clean, clear sea is possible only a few hundred metres from the centre of town, where pleasant pebble and sandy beaches with many attractions and facilities are spread under the shade of pine trees. However, before you head out to sea, discover Sv. Filip and Jakov - still another small, attractive tourist site in which camping tourism is the main activity. Famous for its hospitality, the large number of sports and recreational activities it offers on both land and sea, and the many camps set under fragrant pine trees, Sv. Filip and Jakov is also known for the summer villas and gardens of the former nobility of Zadar. Its roots go back to the 1850s. Also situated in the middle of the Adriatic coast, but in a unique position between the sea and the Lake Vrana, surrounded by

the natural beauty of national parks, is Pakoštane - a charming small Dalmatian town where everybody can find a corner of the Mediterranean to their liking – be it on its waterfront, in the shade of pine trees or on the sandy beaches. Biograd na moru

From ŠIBENIK to PRIMOŠTEN Go for a walk and take a peek into streets, alleys of stairs and squares of the city of Šibenik and some of Dalmatia’s most valuable works of art will appear before you as if in the palm of your hand. If you happen to be here at the right time of summer, these same streets and squares become the stage for the well known International Festival of the Child (the only such festival in the world), as well as the Evening of Dalmatian Chansons and the picturesque Šibenik Medieval Festival. Proud of its fortresses and towers, the birthplace of Faust Vrančić – the inventor of the parachute – Šibenik is best know by far for its largest and priceless sacral monument, the Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral of St. Jacob, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its cupola of white stone dominates the city like a crown. It took master builders over 100 years to complete this edifice. Due to the original construction technique of using large slabs of stone (today we might say prefabricated) – exclusively from the island of Brač and Korčula - this cathedral has been included into the UNESCO list of protected world heritage. While here, do try the cuisine of this region, in particular the far and wide known mussels of Šibenik, harvested at the point where the River Krka, the green beauty, flows into the Adriatic, and then wash them down with a sip, or two, of the superb Babić produced from the autochtonous variety of wine grown in the nearby Primošten vineyards. It is for their beauty, the oddity of their geographical position and the sparse soil from which they grow, in defiance of bora, that these very vinyards have become a monument to the hard working hands of land tillers. In the immediate vicinity of two national parks – Kornati and Krka – and just five kilometres from the Lake Vrana Nature Park, in the westernmost part of Šibenik-Knin County lies Pirovac. It is a picturesque village that nature has been generous to, while over the centuries the industrious hands of a relatively small number of inhabitants have enriched it with historical monuments. Today Pirovac is, alongside Vodice, Primošten and Murter, one of the most important tourist resorts of the Šibenik Riviera. Vodice gets its name after springs of fresh water in its vicinity. Because of its beautiful, long, pebble beaches to the west and to the east, and especially because of its pleasant climate, clear seas and peace and tranquility, the town of Vodice has been, even in medieval times, a haven for the nobility of Šibenik who built their summer residences there.

Drenched in the charm of the warm south, Split is today the economic, industrial and cultural centre of a region whose rich history is told not only in its museums and churches, but is loudly proclaimed from its Peristile, stone houses and facades, while a true Mediterranean spirit lurks in its happy, lively cafes, babbling corners, small streets and life on its waterfront. Although its central part is only 750 paces long (or at least a zealous historian several hundred years ago so asserted), Trogir is a well proportioned, small city with a rich history. The best testimony of this is the fact that, like Split, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Still called the museum-city with its marvelous portal of the Trogir Cathedral

SIRENA Camping

Located at the mouth of the Cetina River. It is a flat and well wooded camp with about 300 metres of sandy beach and a large sunbathing area.

The camp is bordered by the sea on two sides. It is located at the mouth of the Žrnovica River, 5 kilometres from Diocletian’s Palace and the same distance from Salona. The camp remains cool even on the hottest days because of its location on the peninsula, its proximity to the Žrnovica River and a dense wood that provides shade. Less than 100 metres from the camp there are shops, restaurants, pizzerias, night clubs, coffee bars and numerous sports facilities.

MAKARSKA RIVIERA Nature was indeed unselfish to central Dalmatia when it adorned its coastline, which already was blessed with long pebble beaches enhanced by the fragrance of green pines, with places and islands of rare beauty. Filled with the fragrance of Mediterranean vegetation, lined one after the other are a string of prominent tourist centres: Tučepi, Brela, Podgora, Živogošće, Drvenik, Zaostrog and Gradac. From the massif of the Biokovo Nature Park, situated immediately above the beach of the famous Makarska Riviera, and where even today chamois can be seen wandering, do not forget to wait for the sunrise in the summer dawn, when the view extends all the way to the outermost islands of the Adriatic.

HVAR Featured on the list of the ten most beautiful islands in the world for years, sunny Hvar is without equal and one of the most alluring Dalmatian islands. With one of the largest island markets on either side of the Adriatic, with the first municipal theatre in Europe (built in 1612), the Arsenal, the famous "Tvrdalj" palace of Petar Hektorović, and its well worn stone streets that shimmer in the sun, you simply will not know whether to be more drawn to the harmony of history and art, or to the beauty of nature enhanced by the enticing fragrance of lavander that in the early summer wraps the island in its soft purple hues.

BRAČ Brač, the largest island of the Split archipelago, is celebrated far and wide as the island of stone and wind. The island of stone - because it is on Brač that the hands of its stone masons have for centuries been "harvesting" the best stone whose fame is apparent from the cathedrals and other buildings that have been built with it, not only in Croatia, but throughout the world. The island of wind - simply because, as windsurfers know very well, nowhere in the Adriatic does such a perfect maestral blow as in the channel between Brač and Hvar, especially on the beach Zlatni rat, whose shape and position change depending on the direction of the wind and waves.

PELJEŠAC Once part of the famous Dubrovnik Republic, Pelješac is the area in the Dubrovnik region with the largest number of camps that carry the prestigious four star rating. Although they are primarily small camps around the towns of Orebić and Ston and in smaller places like Brijesta, Trpanj, Mokal, Viganj ili Kučište, their charm is very special. The peninsula of Pelješac with its 5.5 kilometre long stone walls in the town of Ston was a strategic point that defended the approaches to Dubrovnik. The warm bracing southern winds make this peninsula one of the favourite destinations for all those who love surfing and sailing. Pelješac is also the well known domain of the Dingač wine, the most esteemed Croatian red wine. The town of Orebić, renowned as a maritime centre in the 18th century, is still frequently visited by those who enjoy antiquity and art.

From the time when Marco Polo set sail for terra incognita from his birthplace on the island of Korčula in the Dubrovnik archipelago, his courtly small town built on the ruins of an earlier Greek colony, has slowly grown, into an urban sculpture of well defined lines perfectly preserved to this day. The town’s streets, designed by a man who was both an ingenious architect and a skilled urban planner, are a true curiosity. Arranged in

If you have ever been impressed by the story of Odysseus, whom the nymph Calypso imprisoned on an island, and if you ever wondered what the famous Ogygia looked like, go to Mljet, at the extreme end of Croatia. Here you will discover a place that looks as if it were taken from picture books of the most beautiful fairytales. Spread before your eyes will be a lake with a small island in the middle of it with the Church of St. Mary and a Benedictine convent from the 12th century. Although Calypso will not be in the area, this site will be enough to capture your heart forever and you will not want to leave.

DUBROVNIK RIVIERA Under the heavenly patronage of St. Blasius, crowned by the famous flag with the celebrated “Libertas” (Liberty) flying from the high stone column from which the legendary knight Orlando keeps watch, Dubrovnik - Ragusa, once one of the smallest but most important Mediterranean merchant and maritime powers represents a truly unique chapter of Croatian tourism. Instead of books and words its rich history can best be told by a stroll down its main street - Stradun - and along the famous walls with the magnificent towers and bastions with a view that extends to the magical Elafiti Islands. From Onofrio’s fountain at the city’s entrance to the City belvedere, the filigreed facade of the Gothic Renaissance Sponza palace, the famous Ducal Palace, to the Baroque Church of St. Blasisus, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Church of St. Ignatius with its famous Jesuit university, every step in this city is an experience par excellence. If you find yourself here in the summer in one of the beautiful camps scattered along the Dubrovnik Riviera from Trsteno and Orašac, through Mlini and Srebreno to Molunat, when the traditional Dubrovnik Summer Festival in an instant transforms the entire stone heart of the old town into the magical set for a stage unique in the world, visit the nearby fortress of Lovrijenac rising 37 metres above the sea, and hear how the immortal soliloquy of Hamlet -- “To be, or not to be,” – resounds with special gravity.

Have you have always dreamt about a holiday away from the summer heat and the bustle of the Mediterranean, amidst idyllic and peaceful hilly or even mountainous surroundings where rivers flow and centuries old forests rise? Are you a follower of continental atmosphere? Then, central Croatia is the place for you. In addition to the Croatian metropolis, the route will also take you to the romantic medieval burgs, summer residences and curias, thermal springs, spas and pilgrimage shrines. Start with a visit to Hrvatsko zagorje, a small but enchanting area of undulating landscapes, and find the town of Krapina, the world famous locality of the Krapina Neanderthal man. In the part of the country which prides itself on a large number of castles, you can discover picturesque medieval burgs and beautiful buildings of the Baroque period. Should you want to see the “capital” of the baroque in Croatia, come to Varaždin. With its finely groomed parks and its cemetery - the famous monument of horticultural architecture where thujas are shaped into screens and arcades modelled on the Versailles, Varaždin is a town of art, manual trades and commerce and a host to two attractive festivals which take place in September: The Baroque Evenings of Varaždin and the Špancirfest – a Festival of Street Strollers. Turning southwards, towards the lowland courses of rivers and streams – the rivers Sava, Kupa, Odra, Lonja, Glina, Ilova and Una – you will come upon the town of Sisak and a region renowned for a very specific style of architecture, using wood as the main building material, for its horses of Posavina, the Topusko thermal health resort and the wonderful Lonja Range Nature Park. If, however, you wish to learn about the very heart of Croatia, Zagreb is where you should come. With some twenty theatres, 21 museums, 31 or so galleries, numerous art collections, a large Zoo and a population almost a million strong, Zagreb is like a magnet that draws guests of a variety of profiles. The large sports and recreational centre on the Jarun lake, with organised regatta tracks for different local and international competitions, and the well established Zagreb Indoors tennis tournament ensure that Zagreb – in addition to being a town of rich cultural heritage, of opera, ballet, theatre, museums and concerts – is also a town which finds its place as a venue on the world map of significant sports events. As far as camping is concerned, the campsites in this area are not as numerous as they are along our coast. There is the Plitvice camp located in Lučko - one of the adjacent suburbs of Zagreb, the city that is spread across the foothills of the Medvednica Nature Park.

SLAVONIA

A

V

Shaped by the creative force of the rivers of Drava, Danube, Sava and Ilova, Slavonia is a true mythical land that has for centuries been guarding its treasures quietly and without pomp. With its wide, vast golden planes that are a part of the

L

fertile Pannonia, its mighty river courses, its alluvial planes which became home to the now centuries old forests of the magnificent common oak (Quercus robur)

S

and to over 2000 biological species, Slavonia is a rich span of land to which the human hand has been adding its own touches of improvement for over 8000 years. In the first centuries of our age, it formed a part of the Roman Empire with two main arterial roads – one led to Osijek (Mursa) and eastern provinces, while the other linked the Aquae Belissae spa (today the town of Daruvar) with the fertile, winegrowing areas around Incera (Požega), Certise (Đakovo) and Cibala (Vinkovci). It also produced two Roman emperors: the able, courageous Valentian and his brother Valens. Celebrating this land as the breadbasket but also as the bountiful winegrowing country, particularly Baranja and the PožegaPleternica area with its Kutjevo vineyards and cellars which belong among the oldest wine cellars in Europe, Romans named it Vallis Aurea – the Golden Valley. So do not hesitate, follow the road that meanders between the proud cities and medieval fortifications, the monasteries and Baroque castles and manor houses of Osijek, Vinkovci, Požega, Slavonski Brod - all the way to Vukovar and Ilok, and up and down where trots the autochtonous, noble Lipizzaner stallion from Đakovo, and where rare birds nest, while above you fly flocks of wild geese that come from the famous nature park of Kopački rit. Discover the monastery of Ilok where Ivan Kapistran, the well known Italian Franciscan, found his final resting place, and the Baroque fortresses of Slavonski Brod and Osijek – this genuine urban and cultural metropolis of Pannonia whose environment of universities and science produced two Croatian Nobel prize winners (Ružička and Prelog). To round it off, take a walk through the picturesque villages of Slavonia where garments are decorated by particularly sumptuous weave and gold thread embroidery, while dining tables are replete with delectable ham and the simply divine kulen, and where the famous, mouth watering fish paprikash gently and invitingly simmers in pots. Welcome to Slavonia.
