REDFAB DESIGN CONCEPT REDFAB is a collective laboratory to experiment all kind of radical art expressions. It keeps the manufacturing character of the place. REDFAB is situated in a semi-rural and industrial area few miles outside Bologna city. Its immediate context is a stunning green

the conference room; game and media rooms; administrative cells; and multi-purpose rental rooms for educational workshops, meetings and events. In addition, REDFAB accommodates a café and the gallery shop in the main entrance. LANSCAPE The landscape texture in ground paving is a composition made of stone slabs, grass and pebbles whilst on the top levels the main roof level is a green grid consisting of gardens, ecological continuities between the art complex and the agrarian landscape.

PROGRAMME REDFAB houses a broad community of artists. The permanent collective lives in art-inresidence lofts whilst visitors stay in the Art Hotel (half-way museum and hotel). They all are located on the top level with access to a green roof terrace, vistas and natural

ACCESS-FLOWS The passageway (main corridor and access) is a double height ‘arcade’ situated in the main industrial nave (axis north-south) reinforced by a central ramp and three cores, which articulates the ateliers (workshops) with boutiques and art galleries.

transformation of the existing spaces and uses. This programmatic adaptation preserves the original frame intact. Only two circulation cores and a metal perforated skin are the main insertions. REDFAB is more than conventional mono-functional cultural or art centres. It incorporates a hybrid programme that combines dwelling (top level) with working, exhibiting, trade and shopping (street level) with various contemporary art manifestations.

THE POWER OF LESS TOWARDS A DEMOCRATIC DESIGN

THE POWER OF LESS 1. EMPOWERING DIVERSITY Conflict, diversity and difference are constitutive of democratic coexistence. A democratic architecture has to provide new flexibility by identifying potential obstacles; exploring possible architectures; looking at potential smart technologies and defining new sociospatial models.

THE POWER OF LESS 2. ADAPTING SYSTEMS What Should We Play Instead? Life is frantic and changing. Adaptability is a necessary antidote against reductive and dysfunctional schemes of living in motion. We must operate with progressive design approaches on potential architecture and new spatial games

THE POWER OF LESS 3. PLURAL DESIGN Density and diversity are sustainable. All citizens have the right to have a sustainable social, climatic and built environment. For instance, any democratic architecture should support the use of decarbonised technologies and encourage passive energy systems.

THE POWER OF LESS 4. PLAYABILITY One of the most significant aspects of design lies in its ludic action. What level of playability do we take into consideration within design process?

THE POWER OF LESS 5. SOCIAL ACCESSIBILITY We must reject any architectural trend that excludes the ethic role and consequently the social promotion. Architects are certainly organic intellectuals because they are organizers of the built environment and the potential one.
