THE SPIRIT OF CALTON’S PAVILION The Spirit of Calton represents the urban soul of a unique residential community. It symbolised a volatile being, the air-like expression on collective memories and multicultural beliefs. Can we dwell the Spirit of Calton? Yes, the Spirit of Calton takes

-

nections and collaborations between individuals and groups by strengthening community spirit and local cultural heritage. Why do we propose a lightweight air-frame? We need a transformative space that can be easily transport, blow-up and stored during weekends and holidays by CAA members, especially children, disable or elder people. This pavilion covers 150M3. This volume can be stored in 1M3. It weights circa 30 kilos. Montage requires only two persons.

The main social outcomes are: (a) improving individual wellbeing through participation in community-led events and workshops; (b) improving perceptions towards disability and impairment by creating a responsive communal building; (c) overcoming isolation with pop-up and hands-on art/cultural activities; and (d) connecting Calton people within other residential debating, screening and (dis)playing. Our proposal is focused in 3 priority areas: • Social action and volunteering work with all segments through open art workshops and conversations. • Cultural activity and artistic manifestations such as story • Youth development, mainly targeting the inclusion of children in poverty (47%) and youth ethnic groups. Why portable and transparent? We want to celebrate the fact that 2/3 of people in Canton (and Bridgeton) walk, bike or take bus as main public transport to commute daily. So the idea of building an easy-to-carry and mobile shed is one of the key features of this proposal. In addition, 98.1% live within 500m of celebrates the “remembrance of places” that are gone by acti-

vating them; creating environmental and heritage awareness at humane scale; and providing open civic and art activities like live workshops, pop-up cinema and civic debates in the Elcho garden. The main concepts are remaking, lightness, playing, and learning. The design team will select a group of building volunteers who will be inducted and monitor how to make the pavilion based on DIY modular templates. The enveloped allows multiple structure and an adaptive space. This pavilion will serve to host food events, debates, talks and screenings. The Spirit of Calton’s Pavilion also invite a broad community to debate, envision and lead ideas of local urban regeneration that we can apply in other vacant lands or derelict buildings such as: - St James’s Primary School - Tureen Street School - St Luke’s and St Andrew’s Church (exterior) - Tobago street and Stevenson street, corner vacant site - Whitevale Bath, 79 Whitevale Street - Barras, 246 London Road, vacant site - 483 London Road, corner vacant site Refer to: http://www.gcph.co.uk/assets/0000/4257/Final_Report_ Calton_-2014_with_photos_JCedit_Final.pdf How it will be run? Calton Heritage and Learning Centre (CHLC) and Calton Area Association (CAA) agree to support this application. STUDIO POP will co-design, supervise and fabricate pavilion + manage art/cultural events.
