Radical Architecture is a systemic design unit ruled by experimentalism, ludic interventions and ideological pluralism. It explores the spatial potentiality and activation of endangered, vacant, alternative or visionary environments; alternative technologies; and transgressive game plans for the development of adaptable living systems in cities, slums, rural settlements or hinterlands. This unit reflects, conceptualises and designs on radical scenarios for living in Glasgow, overseas and the galaxy. Systemic thinking, adaptability and playability are key components to stimulate non-prescriptive design schemes; practice-led research; and high-risk and high-gain technical solutions: remaking; temporary architecture; science fiction; climatic design; compactness; lightness; ecological urbanism; urban renewal; borders; and urban farming. Radical Architecture breaks the set by identifying the following conditions: 1. Extreme (severe environments) 2. Essential (elementary spaces) 3. Fantastic (utopian or fictional game plans) 4. Transgressive (borderlands; limits and edges) 5. Transformative (building systems in motion) 6. Informal (subaltern architecture) During the research phase (term 1) students reflected on embryonic design criteria via creating manifestoes; fieldworks; 1:1 live projects; mock-ups; and model making. During the current design phase (term 2), students develop an in-depth, independent and coherent oeuvre through various concepts, experiments and visual media including 1:1 manufacturing workshop; lab tests; and live interventions. The methodology is 100% research-by-design, focused on trans-disciplinary and multi-scalar knowledge through dialogues, interfaces and interconnectivity between art, humanities and science by offering a holistic worldview where ‘everything is connected to everything else’. LAURA MACLEAN CHISITU VILLAGE MALAWI

THE WIND OF CHANGE EMPOWERMENT SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH BUILDING, TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN

In Malawi, up to 91% of rural people do not have access to clean, reliable and affordable energy. This is a fundamental prerequisite to sustainable health development and poverty reduction. By manufacturing wind turbines locally, with the assistance of local people, we can start to build an in-country value chain that creates local jobs, which helps to develop struggling economies. The electricity provided can be used for many things, from domestic lights to powering small businesses. This project aims to look at the design and installation of small-scale wind turbines in rural Malawian villages, incorporating the design of a new Turbine Fabrication Factory and community building. Through leading workshops here in Scotland, this thesis aims to develop new educational techniques to bring to Malawi to help the running of the turbine construction. This thesis intends to look at a how the factory and electricity would affect the development of one of the poorest countries in the World. INCOHERENCE STUDY OF HOMELESSNESS IN THE US

Homelessness is a pressing issue in the US. It is a very complex problem, influenced by many factors including: social, economical as well as psychological ones. While the current housing developments for the homeless are designed and executed as normal housing projects, this approach does not even begin to address the issues that these people are struggling with. This project focuses on the re-integrating homeless people within the society, before they move into permanent housing. The project aim is to provide shelter; teach employable skills; and reconnect uninterrupted community support while bridging the gap between homeless and homeowner. It is estimated that there are around 10,000 children in the streets in Caracas. This project is looking at integrating them in society and family environment by providing a home for some of the children within a modernist high rise estate. This environment of mixed type of people and activities would encourage communication and fostering attachments with others thus encouraging the development of children’s self-worth and confidence. The goal is to adapt and change an existing high-rise development to accommodate various different purpose facilities that would foster community engagement and interaction between the children of the streets and people living in the neighborhood. At the same the idea is to provide facilities that would help improve people’s skills and help them develop new ones. THE DARK SIDE OF DUBAI GIVING HOPE AND LIGHT TO THE LABOURERS BY IMPROVING THEIR LIVING AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS IN THE AREA OF AL-QUOZ It could be argued that Dubai’s transformation is unprecedented in the history of urban development. Its mega-projects have become a source of debate, argument and most importantly, an influence throughout the Gulf region and the world. However there is a much darker side to the desert metropolis: As Dubai undergoes one of the largest construction booms in the world, at least half a million immigrant construction workers are residing in labour camps in inhumane conditions. Behind Dubai’s glitter and luxury, the experiences of these migrant workers present a much less attractive picture of abuse of human rights, wage exploitation and working conditions that are hazardous to the point of being deadly. Hundreds of thousands of South-East Asian labourers are trapped in a cycle of poverty and debt, which amounts to little more than indentured servitude. The area of Al-Quoz is dense with labour camps and is home to hundreds of thousands of labourers. They have no space for recreational or cultural activities, no shelter from the heat and no indoor areas for congregation. By implementing a design strategy which can be applied to areas for potential development, social improvements can be made in the step to a better life for these hardworking manpower. THIBAUD STELMASZYK CALAIS FRANCE

A FEW MORE MILES

This project is an attempt to offer a radical solution to Calais’ refugee crisis. The creation of a massive refugee camp at the border between France and the UK seems an absurd idea considering the wealth and power of both nations. The aim here si not to create another ghetto that will progressively fall into ruins and despair but to challenge the perception and stigma we Europeans have of ‘illegal’ immigration whilst protecting and empowering Calais’ refugee moral, physical and economically. At the same time, refugees whom desire to cross the Channel should be able to do so after having truly understood what await them the other shoreline. GORDON GIBSON NOVA SCOTIA CANADA

DROSSCAPE RE-IMAGINING THE POST INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE

Nova Scotia has long been known for its rich coalfields and high rate of coal production. Communities formed around collieries where they developed a strong bond to the industry and made Nova Scotia prosper throughout the 20th Century, in particular, the Sydney coal fields formed a series of coal mining towns throughout the region. Coal production has now ceased across the province with communities suffering as a result. Environmental damage is extensive which has not been formally addressed. What is the future of this post-industrial landscape of the Nova Scotia? This thesis project aims to reuse the former coal mining site of Point Aconi to provide a model framework for environmental and economic recovery. The first act of reclamation will involve Phytoremediation. The process aims to transform DROSSCAPE to ECOSCAPE. This is a process in which the pollutants can be removed from the ground, allowing for trees and plants to be reinstated in the landscape. This scheme offers a route through site to activate certain ‘nodes’ for tourism, leisure and research. Access to the mines will be reopened through vertical lift shafts. This aims to gift the public an experience of becoming a miner, if only for a short time. When was the last time you spent so much as an hour by yourself, with no distraction from the outside world? The modern world seeks to connect everyone, from your computer at home to the mobile device in your pocket. But how healthy is it to have the whole world at your fingertips 24/7? And how can we escape this and find solitude in a bustling city? The Butterfly Project aims to provide an antidote to our modern culture of connectivity. This project seeks to reconcile man with himself by designing spaces which invoke a moment of solitude within the city. RESERVING OF SERVANT ALLEYWAYS

The Alleyway is one of the oldest spaces created within the urban grain of a city. In Glasgow, majority are dedicated to waste collection and services and are synonymous with criminal activity and unkept conditions. My interest is, through application of systemic thinking and analysis of data and research, to create a framework that provides a community-driven solution to transform the lanes within Glasgow into public spaces that people can enjoy and no longer fear to use day or night. QIUYING HUANG EAST END GLASGOW SCOTLAND

HOME FOR THE HOMELESS

The Scottish Homeless Statistics indicates that Glasgow has the greatest number of homeless applications in Scotland (although falling). Many of the homeless people approach housing services with complex needs. Frequent moving between emergency shelter and temporary shelter intensify their isolated and transient feelings. Moreover, continual relocating will make the poverty problems getting worse. Creating a sense of stability and appropriation against transition will be an adequate solution for the homeless. The concept of the project is building a place with more stable neighbourhoods, better access to public service, self-dependent working opportunities, and settled accommodation called home. This project is about the creation of communities centred around food set out in three stages, the first of which focuses on interaction, where the tools are provided to enable the tacit sharing of knowledge with regard to food. The second stage will focus on providing the tools for craft, maintaining the idea of tacit knowledge sharing. EOIN KAVANAGH GLASGOW HARBOUR GLASGOW SCOTLAND

ARCHIPELAGO CITY THE CITY OF THE DIVIDED WHOLE

Following on from the investigation undertaken during the first semester in which he looked at the wider context of the city in term of an archipelago of separate parts. A site was selected in the end stages of the research phase to tackle within the period of design. The project left off concluding that the site and its surroundings lacked a clear identity as perceived within other city areas as clear architectural rules had not been established. The location is challenging with may obstacles and elements. Different design approaches to the project have been conceived and examined. A constant theme through the process has been the development of a flexible housing typology and urban pattern, which can be applied to the landscape to rationalise it. The intended goal of the project is to programme the area through the application of typology. This is done to serve the means of linking site in its current form convincingly with the city and creating an identity for the area within the broader public imagination. BRIDGING THE GAPS: [WOW] WORKSHOP ON WATER

WOW (Workshop On Water) is an instrument to reactivate vacant and derelict land, the school which plants a seed for temporary architecture culture in Glasgow. The starting point of the WOW is Forth & Clyde canal (Glasgow Branch), which previously was highly industrial and now there are vacant plots. Water allows the school move freely from one place to another in order to activate new areas. WOW units sit on the canal based on intensive functions defined by land use zones of influence, topographical conditions and accessibility that define stop points along the canal. The four units -Art Incubator, PlayPod, Control Station and Culture Kitchen- are floating and move through waterways in other cities or even countries.. They can be easily constructed and rent or lease at anytime. Their structural frames are based on modular prefab pieces allowing WOW to be shipped into other hubs. The facade can be picked from the catalogue library Harvest Map. All materials are recyclables from upcycled industrial waste products. WOW is a self-organised organism of the DIY culture. The management control is digitalised. Then it allows to book units for events as well as regular collaborative networks. WOW After 5 years these temporary unit become part of the permanent planning.
