STUDY BACKGROUND Introduction and goals CRISP runs between 2011-2014 and is funded by FP7, the European Union Framework 7 research programme. The project is conducted by partners from UK (University of Surrey), Greece (TEI), Hungary (CEU), Lithuania (KTU), the Netherlands (RuG and TNO) and Norway (SIFO). The core objective of this project is to identify potential paths to engage on an integrated effort to support the transition, to a sustainable, low carbon Europe. To meet this challenge the CRISP project: •built upon theories that explicitly link individual and organizational agencies with structure and pathways of change; •analysed practical (past) cases of change with this framework to additional understanding on the role of agency and structure and related barriers, drivers and pathways of change; 3
•applied participatory scenario techniques, transition scenario and back casting methodologies, to develop sustainability visions and transition paths. These allow for specific analysis of processes in transition paths and the factors that drive and hinder such transitions; •Finally, on the basis of the analysis of the theoretical basis and cases and the results of the scenario/back casting exercise, the core question of the call will be answered: what novel policy mixes and co-operation mechanisms can help to overcome barriers for individuals and collectives to engage on sustainable paths. The impact of the findings of the project is enhanced by its strong participatory approach and an elaborated dissemination program that includes a policy stakeholder panel.
