Maths Puzzle Morning

Maths Puzzle Morning was full of exciting new challenges and experiences this year, with year group bubbles unable to mix or share resources.

The Maths relays, Express Coding Course and the range of creative tasks, from Chinese Tanagram puzzles and Penrose Triangles to origami cubes and octahedrons, all showed our pupils what fun Maths can be!

7 THEME DAY

World Book Day

World Book Day 2021 was an online event for the whole school to celebrate books and reading. The event was divided into four themes:

Write

Pupils all contributed to the Cranleigh Prep poetry anthology called Looking In and Looking Out: Cranleigh Prep in Lockdown 2020-2021.

Watch Make

All year groups could choose from a range of video clips recorded by established authors to inspire and encourage reading.

Everyone was encouraged to use their creativity to make something to celebrate reading, such as making book covers come alive and making a book character from a potato.

8

Create

Pupils celebrated reading using technology, by creating online book reviews, podcasts and innovative retelling of famous stories.

D.E.A.R.

We had a very special remote DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time, where pupils, teachers and even the Headmaster stopped what they were doing and spent 20 minutes reading.

QUESTIONNAIRES

Mrs Liz Ellis

What is your role in the school?

I’m the Catering Chef Manager.

How long have you been working here?

Two years. Have you lived or worked anywhere else before?

Yes I live in Dorking. I’ve worked all over the place. I’ve worked in Cranleigh, Guildford, Dorking, Edinburgh, Crawley and Peterborough. All my roles have been food related.

Do you prefer your current job or your previous job?

I prefer my job now!

Members of Form 6F carried out these interviews after finishing their senior school exams.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

I like the interactions with my colleagues, because they’re an e ective team, and I like the interactions with the children.

What is the strangest thing that has happened here?

There was a flood in the kitchen in the middle of lunchtime which was particularly bad timing!

What changes have you seen while you have been working here?

We’ve changed the food to a degree. Obviously, we had to change the Dining Room because of COVID. It will be good to see it go back to normal. I’ve also enjoyed seeing the change in the children as each term goes past and the change in all the countryside and colours around the school.

Do you have any pets?

I have a pet cat! I used to have two boxer dogs. I used to have horses as well, when I was younger. I love animals. I like riding but I haven’t done it for quite a long time.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Cycling and I sometimes play a bit of golf. I am quite sporty, I like to go outside because I grew up on a farm. I like to be outside, I don’t like being inside for very long. Sometimes I can go a whole week without watching television!

What are your hopes for the future?

For the foreseeable, I’d like to stay here because I enjoy the feel of the school and my team is really good. I’d like to keep moving things forward. It’s great here at Cranleigh.

10

Max Jewell-Smith

What has been your strangest moment at Cranleigh?

I crashed a drone into myself when landing whilst filming for the race to China video.

What changes have you seen in your time at Cranleigh?

There have been quite a few events at school. There has been a Headmaster change and the Townsend building was built.

Do you have any pets?

What is your role in this school?

I manage the IT systems and help run all of the social media pages as well as filming all of the school films, including general school promotion online.

How long have you been working here?

I joined in 2016, which is five years ago now.

Do you prefer, working at Cranleigh or your last job?

My last job was freelancing, I was a video editor for di erent companies, and there was far less stability. I enjoy coming to one place every day and there is a lot of variety here.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the creative and filming side of things here, as well as supporting the students and sta with their IT issues.

I had a cat throughout my childhood which recently died at the age of 22! Also, I suppose you could count some frogs that I have living in a pond.

Do you have any hobbies?

I’m currently doing quite a lot of DIY at home since I recently moved into a new house. I also like to go hiking outdoors. Technology is great but being outside is needed after a long week.

Where are you from?

When growing up, I used to live in Guildford but I recently moved to Milford.

What are your hopes for the future?

I would like to have a media club with a ‘Cranleigh TV’ sort of thing, with news, sports fixtures and things that involve both schools, being both filmed and edited by the students.

Mr Ruperto Katigbak

Have you lived or worked anywhere else?

I live about five minutes away from the school. This is really good as I can get here very quickly and it is easy. I also used to live in the Philippines with my family.

What do you enjoy most about working at Cranleigh Prep?

I love working at the school because I like to be around the children and It makes me happy seeing them grow up.

What’s your role in this school?

I work in the Facilities Department and I help do lots of work around the school. How long have you been working at Cranleigh Prep?

I have been working at Cranleigh since 2004 and have worked here for over 17 years.

Do you prefer your current job to your last one?

I used to work as an electrician and I enjoyed my job there but I prefer my current job as I have worked here for so long.

What changes have you seen in your time at Cranleigh Prep?

The Ferrier, Wheeler and Couper were the only buildings when I started working at Cranleigh but the Couper was new when I joined.

Do you have any family?

I have a wife who lives with me near Cranleigh, but most of my family live in the Philippines, where I grew up.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I like to travel and go to places like Spain and Portugal.

What are your hopes for the future?

When I retire, I want to be able to go back home to the Philippines to relax, to see my family and friends.

Our first activity included some orienteering, the high ropes (which were fun and really petrifying) and a very high trapeze jump. The second activity was the cat walk; you had to climb a ladder, then walk on the pole. To get down, you had to fall backwards o the pole. We then had to build a puzzle, which was very tricky! We also went in to a very dark cellar. Afterwards we had to climb a log, then run down it and hit the pole with our feet.

They discovered the beautiful region of Bretagne (Brittany) where the first known crêpes were made. The children then enjoyed a few rounds of the game Pétanque in the Provence region and practiced their French vocabulary in the Rhône Alpes where they designed ski outfits. They learnt some interesting facts about Paris and, finally, used Easyjet and Booking. com to organise themselves flights, hotels and activities in Biarritz.

Christmas Celebration

The Lower School Christmas Celebration 2020 had a wider audience than usual this year.

Pupils in Forms 1 and 2 became overnight movie stars, after a tough day of filming in the Chapel. Christmas poems were beautifully spoken and acted by Form 2, with the addition of brightly-coloured jumpers to get us into the Christmas spirit.

22

Form 1’s performance of ‘The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All’ was full of enthusiasm and energy; highlights included the funky sheep chorus during ‘Did You Hear The News?’ and a rousing rendition of ‘Sing It Loud’ as the whole cast hailed the birth of Jesus.

TRIP TO

High Ashurst

On Tuesday 20th October Form

2 travelled to High Ashurst. First, we were all mixed up in our classes and split into groups of nine.

We did tonnes of activities such as the high ropes. It was quite scary but fun at the same time. Next, we did a group challenge, now that was hard. We had to work as a team to

complete tasks. All of the groups rotated so we got to have a go at everything that was planned.

After a delicious packed lunch, which included doughnuts, it was time

for our last task. It was the Spider Web challenge. You had to dodge all the ropes and not touch them to reach the end. It was quite tricky but by far my favourite task!

Sadly, it was time to go back to school. We had such a brilliant time and it was great to be outside in the forest away from school for a day!

Carrots are the School’s reward system where children accumulate points (Carrots) for all types of academic work, activities and positive behaviour. There are three main milestones: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Carrots

Once children reach a milestone, they are awarded a carrot badge. At the end of the Michaelmas term, winning forms were invited into the Hub for hot chocolate and cupcakes prepared by our wonderful catering team.

Now, after a bumpy few months of being ‘in school’, ‘out of school’, and ‘back in school’ again, we are delighted to see these lovely children from Lower School enjoy a treat on the ‘Golden Table’ as a reward for their high Carrot count. They enjoyed some yummy treats prepared by our talented catering department, along with ‘skip the queue lunch passes’ for the final week of school.

Despite undergoing a few logistical changes due to Covid restrictions, the library is still a hive of activity at breaktimes and quiet activity times, with separate year group bubbles coming in at allotted times. Over 400 Accelerated Reader awards have been achieved so far; it was wonderful to see so many pupils completed quizzes on their books whilst at home during lockdown and since being back at school.

LibraryThe Awesome Book Awards are an annual highlight, with Mrs Fenton running Book Clubs as an after-school activity for Form 3 and 4 separately. At the beginning of May, a fabulous virtual ceremony was released to all the participating schools and Malamander by Thomas Taylor was announced as the 2021 winner.

On Friday, 21 May, all of Form 4 had the opportunity to visit the PGL Centre at Marchants Hill.

It had been a long time since we had been able to go out on a school trip, but it was well worth the wait as we enjoyed the activities of the Giant Swing, Zipwire, Archery and the Challenge Course. We loved working as a team on the Giant Swing to lift our friends higher and

We also had plenty of opportunities to support each other over the Challenge Course and encourage everyone

ConcertAutumn

Musical life has continued to flourish at CPS with pupils enjoying a wide range of events throughout the year. Some events have taken place online but we have worked hard to ensure as much live music making as possible.

62

The Autumn Concert was an exciting event as the pupils busily recorded their pieces, which were later streamed to parents. Recording isn’t easy but after some initial nerves they produced a great concert!

63 MUSIC

Music

Christmas is the busiest time of year for the Music Department and we enjoyed the Christmas Informal Concert where the performers got into the festive spirit, wearing Christmas hats.

The Carol Service took a different form but was no less spectacular as the different bubble choirs contributed to their part of the Nine Lessons and Carols, which was later streamed to parents.

Lockdown in the Lent term did not stop us! Our musicians recorded videos of themselves performing solos for the House Music Festival. It was wonderful to hear so many performances and such high standards in all instrumental areas and age groups. Hearts were the overall winners!

64

Children have continued to enjoy an extensive programme of extra-curricular Dance including Modern, Ballet, Tap and Street Dance, along with curriculum Dance for Forms 1-3.

Dance

Whether classes have taken place over zoom, videos or in person, the children have had another busy and enjoyable year of Dance. A particular highlight was the Informal Dance Display which took place during the Summer term.

65 MUSIC & DANCE

Summer Concert

The Summer Concert was a slick operation as the pupils, now seasoned professionals in the art of recording, performed their pieces confidently and musically. The concert was later shared with parents.

66

Throughout the year we have had several ABRSM and Trinity exam visits. Our pupils have achieved excellent results across the board and we are very proud of each and every one of our musicians.

67
MUSIC
We love music at CPS and we can’t wait for more live music making next year!

Drama

The Form 5s dived into Beatles mania over lockdown in their Drama and Music lessons, creating scripts, making short films, singing songs, creating mock interviews and dressing up as the Liverpudlian legends. They learnt about the city and people of Liverpool, and the famous playwright, Willy Russell, and his timeless musical “Bloodbrothers!”

THROUGH LOCKDOWN Creativity

Food Tech

Form 5 were challenged with various cookery techniques to master during the lockdown periods. Here are some examples of their fine work using the rubbing-in cake making method (scones), the all-in-one method of cake making (lemon drizzle cake and chocolate brownies), creating a carbonara sauce to accompany spaghetti and baking a set pudding (brioche/bread and butter pudding).

DT 10 = Personal Design Wall:

Inspired by the London Design Museum’s collection of objects that we live with on a daily basis, pupils selected a number of important objects from around their home that they thought were well designed. Focusing on the way they looked, worked or just if they stood out for some reason, pupils analysed and justified their findings, creating a ‘Design Museum of Me’.

methods were available. They then created ideas through sketches to communicate their thoughts. Consideration of sizes and objects to be stored were critical to the success of the overall design of the Lap Joint Box and its production!

DT 14 = Kitchen Redesign:

DT 13 = Lap Joint Box Research and Ideas:

Pupils undertook research considering what needed to be stored and what joining

Pupils redesigned their own kitchens at home during lockdown using learning from Margarete “Grete” SchütteLihotzky. Pupils used isometric projection and Computer Aided Design packages to communicate their ideas.

Art

The horse drawing was created by following my YouTube instruction videos. It was interesting to note an increase in drawing quality as a result of pupils working by themselves at home instead of being distracted by others in the classroom.

For the recreation of the Magritte painting, the children were asked to recreate a painting from a list of 200 famous paintings by using a combination of themselves or another member of their family and items from around the home.

The pen and wash leaves was done as a sketchbook piece by a member of the DaVinci Club.

Secondly, we all experienced living under canvas for a week. We learnt that tents aren’t soundproof, and the bird song is really loud
