II. “Milord methinks the musicians are ready to commence The concert,” listen: the plaintive undulations of strings of gut calling out a woeful and mournful sigh, appealing to the heart and soul. The horsehair bow stroking the strings like a lover the audience completely hushed In order to hear the tremulous rush of notes outpouring from the front of the hall, reverberating off the wall, caressing all in harmony with the ebb and flow of one’s very own blood coursing through one’s own veins; the pulse of the music emulating a rhythm akin to the rapture in life itself.

Note: The poem “The Concert” is written in poetic support of an article by Alex Ross appearing in the New Yorker as a preview of a concert at Carnegie Hall to feature a master musician who plays the viola da gamba considered by some music critics to be outmoded.
