Xeikon 8500 supports Colorisprint’s flexible production Belgium digital print service provider Colorisprint is celebrating this year its 20th year in operation, supported throughout by Xeikon technology including a Xeikon 8500.

Founded in 1998, Colorisprint’s first digital press was an Agfa Chromapress 320 with a Xeikon OEM engine. That year it also invested in a large format plotter.

including advertising agencies and graphic designers mainly in Belgium, France and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It also offers a trade service to offset and digital printers.

In 2003, it bought a Dicopress 500 with a Xeikon OEM engine followed, in 2006 by its first flatbed printer. In 2011, the company renewed this flatbed printer and acquired a Zünd cutting system. Four years later, Colorisprint completed its flatbed portfolio with a second system. The multifunctional Xeikon 8500 web-fed commercial press joined the press hall in 2017. This year Colorisprint also added large format UV gel technology to its existing line up of large format UV printers.

Konica Minolta launches JETVarnish 3D Evolution in Southeast Asia The MGI JETvarnish 3D Evolution delivers extra added-value and sensory dimensional textures to printed output in larger formats. Sha Jumari reports.

Delivering quick turnarounds and short-runs, the solution has high volume productivity with up to 4,065 B2 size sheets per hour and can handle media thickness of up to 800gsm. The ability to print in larger format allows for a wider range of demanding applications, especially within the packaging space. The solution is also targeted for commercial printing and publishing such as book covers, business cards or greeting cards, brochures, flyers, posters, magazines, photo books, amongst many others. Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia Pacific announced the launch of the MGI JETvarnish 3D Evolution series. The Evolution was launched at the Open House event held at Konica Minolta’s Customer Engagement Centre in Singapore on 21st June. The small and targeted event was attended by 30 customers mostly from Singapore and Malaysia. The MGI JETvarnish 3D Evolution is the world’s first B1+ scalable sheetfed digital enhancement press. The Evolution has been specially designed to offer digital and offset print providers a scalable upgrade path, suited for those looking to expand and upgrade their services with larger formats and quicker prototyping. The solution applies Spot UV coating to produce vivid and tactile applications with a variety of 2D and 3D effects with up to 232 microns in a single pass on top of CMYK print. With the Evolution, users are allowed short run customization flexibility. The

solution is equipped with Variable Data Enhancement (VDE) kit to provide variable data for text, graphics and images for personalization on every piece produced. The award-winning iFoil-L Hot Foiling system is an in-line option for the Evolution for application of real foil. It can produce high-value foil stamping and embossing effects within a 100% digital process. The system supports multiple-coloured foils (up to five colours) applied in one pass. A highlight of the system is the ability to do foilon-foil. The fully digital embellishment eliminates the need for plates, screens and dies. The Large Format Difference The MGI JETvarnish Evolution is the first commercially available digital print enhancement press for application sizes up to 75x120 cm. The Evolution series is available in B2, B2 landscape and B1 formats.

Perfect Registration with AIS Smart Scanner Unique to MGI, the JETvarnish 3D Evolution is fitted with the revolutionary Artificial Intelligence SmartScanner (AIS). The scanner uses artificial intelligence to automatically control varnish and hot foil registration for inkjet heads over the preprinted sheet. It ensures high precision for every print job by readjusting to print defects or misalignment on each sheet in real-time. The scanner has proven to be able to reduce more than 80% of setup time and minimise wastage costs. The Corona Surface Treatment option has been integrated into the series to expand substrate compatibility and printed ink options. This option optimises varnish adhesion on complex printed substrates and modifies the surface tension. The treatment helps improve printability of the materials, so users can save time and reduce costs on lamination processes.

New ideas and innovation allow printing industry to diversify and grow The sky really is the limit in today’s printing sector. Advances in technology combined with investment and innovation by market leaders mean it is now possible to print on anything. One successful printer who has embraced innovation and the new opportunities available is Happy Print Digital Painting Co, based in Taiwan. As part of its push to adopt new ideas, the business has been able to diversify its client base.

As the home of the only digital UV inkjet device in Taiwan that can print transparent ink, Happy Print Digital Painting Co has evolved from offering standard printing to being able to offer customers an exciting range of new printing applications. As a result, they have grown their services and profits and now offer clients custom solutions on leather bags, leather chairs, acrylics, balloons, coasters, display racks, lamp shades and even props for movie sets. Hong Jilong, General Manager, said shortly after their EFI printer, the EFI VUTEk GS3250LX Pro UD, was up and running they received an order from a European airline to print on leather. “Only the EFI printers and EFI’s patented inks passed the wearresistance tests carried out by the airline,” Mr Jilong said. “Our turnover has doubled in the first half of 2018, compared to 2017. There is no doubt the market is currently prospering and the future is bright.”

Closer to a commercial paper battery BillerudKorsnäs and Uppsala University are making paper batteries a reality, paving the way for energy storage in packaging materials. BillerudKorsnäs and researchers at Uppsala University have together taken an important step towards the future’s paper batteries. Together they have taken basic research based on pure cellulose from algae and developed it to work with the same type of fibre that BillerudKorsnäs usually uses to manufacture packaging material. This development opens up for both inexpensive and eco-friendly batteries. The long-term aim is to enable largescale production and the future use of paper batteries for applications in areas such as smart packaging. Technology for large-scale production processes The development work is being carried out by one of Sweden’s foremost research teams under Maria Strömme,

collaborating with BillerudKorsnäs, as a leading company in the development of sustainable packaging technology, in a completely new form. “What’s special in this case is the model for collaboration between BillerudKorsnäs and Uppsala University that has resulted in technology adapted to large-scale production processes. We’re combining the deep theoretical expertise of the researchers with our understanding of innovation and production technology. By successfully creating a joint platform, we can focus our work on the future, on creating an advanced product that can still be produced in an effective way,” says Lars Sandberg, project manager for innovation at BillerudKorsnäs.

Smart, connected packaging In the long term, the paper battery opens up possibilities for developing packaging that is both smart and more sustainable. Small paper batteries with sensors can in the future open up for packaging that can be traced through the entire transport chain. This includes, for example, packaging that measures temperature or position in real time and provides information on what is happening with an item during transport. A paper battery entails many new ways of using packaging and can thus offer exciting opportunities for the packaging industry and BillerudKorsnäs customers that wish to establish systems that safeguard quality and delivery reliability. For example, a light sensor along with a BillerudKorsnäs paper battery could provide information on where in the transport chain a product disappeared from its packaging. With electrodes based on cellulose from wood fibre, the ambition is that in the future, it will be possible to recycle batteries along with their boxes and make them into new boxes or paper batteries. “The paper battery is a key piece of the puzzle in efforts to produce smart packaging that requires small, sustainable power sources. By enabling this type of sustainable packaging, the work on the paper battery is fully in line with BillerudKorsnäs’ vision of challenging conventional packaging for a sustainable future. Storing energy in paper instead of in lithium batteries, for example, allows for bio-based batteries that can form part of a circular system, which provides major sustainability benefits,” says Magnus Wikström, technical director at BillerudKorsnäs.

Landa secures $300m funding Landa announced the completion of a $300 million equity financing, led by private investment firm SKion GmbH and joined by specialty chemicals group ALTANA, an already-existing shareholder. Both SKion and ALTANA are wholly-owned by German entrepreneur Susanne Klatten. The investment is in addition to the over $400 million previously invested by Benny Landa and ALTANA in Landa Digital Printing. Benny Landa continues to be the company’s majority shareholder with 54 %. ALTANA and SKion together now own 46 % of the company with ALTANA continuing to hold a stake of 33.3 %.

The proceeds from the financing will be used for expansion of the company’s infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, as well as for ongoing R&D and market development. “My investment reflects my confidence in the technological potential of Landa Digital Printing. Together we can spark the market demand for digital printing

solutions,” said Susanne Klatten. “To be part of this new chapter in the history of printing also means a significant entrepreneurial move for me.” “We are delighted with our longstanding relationship with ALTANA and are extremely pleased to broaden that partnership to include SKion, with whom we have a shared vision. IT’S TIME TO UN-SHELVE ECO-UNFRIENDLY PACKAGING HOW WILL THE INDUSTRY MEET ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES?

Plastic – not so fantastic Pressure is growing over the huge amount of plastic waste generated from packaging materials which simply cannot be ignored. Plastic pollution is damaging our environment including oceans, coast lines and wildlife.

As a PR and marketing agency immersed in the graphic arts industry, the first half of 2018 has shown that we’re on our way to another great year for the packaging industry. This is largely driven by our increasingly fastpaced consumer society and tough competition for brands. Versioning, personalisation and decoration continue to trend but increasing environmental awareness and legislation changes have put sustainability and environmental responsibility at the top of the list for many. With this in mind, we look at some of the environmental challenges and other trends we see developing over the rest of this year and into 2019. So, in no particular order… That’s a latte waste You can’t have missed the #LatteLevy debate on social media, but is a fine the answer? I love a sweet latte to wake me up in the morning but with the knowledge that this disposable cup could pollute our planet for years to come – can I justify it daily? Can you? What are the on-the-go options for those of us who still can’t remember to take plastic bags to the supermarket for our shopping? A juice carton –

accompanied by a plastic straw? Water – in a plastic bottle? What’s the solution? For coffee – a reusable cup and you’ll need to remember it. There’s an incentive with many of the big chains offering a reduced price on your morning (or any) coffee. Other suggestions include a re-usable straw or plastic alternative water bottle. Find some more useful tips on achieving zero waste from Friends of the Earth.

Will plastic packaging remain? If so, who’s responsibility is it to limit pollution and waste? The consumer? The brand? The supermarket? The debate goes on but its undeniable that some are making early efforts to combat the issue with supermarket chain Iceland among the first to announce it would stop the sale of plastic packaging on own brand products by 2020. M&S and Waitrose are also committed to cutting down on plastics used in packaging. It’s not only supermarkets that are making efforts to reduce plastic waste, Pret-A-Manger and Costa are both trialling recyclable alternatives to plastic straws. 22 content – the highest of any beverage container – and the aluminium in cans is infinitely recyclable. In fact, 75 percent of the aluminium ever made is still in productive use today. So we’re likely to see many alternatives to our current plastics in packaging, these include: compostable biodegradable packaging which is growing in popularity in the food sector among others; edible packaging – which again is becoming increasingly popular in foods, no surprise with the potential to eliminate packaging waste entirely; natural materials – as we delve further into plastic alternatives we’ll see the use of more natural materials, they’re renewable and sustainable and usually by-products of other industries thus minimising waste in those industries; and finally biopolymers – aka petroleum plastic substitutes – one to watch with the potential to become the new norm for plastic packaging. The goal is to use materials that will not be sent to landfill for hundreds of years. Recyclable is good but biodegradable even better, and everyone in the supply chain has a part to play. Less is more Who hasn’t experienced an onlineordered parcel that’s included a box inside a bigger box inside a branded shipping box? It seems unnecessary, but when it comes to online retail, who’s to blame for excess packaging? In this case, I think that the supply chain needs to be reviewed and analysed. Some online retailers offer the option of waiting for your parcel when all items can be delivered together – a quick check that could save a ton of packaging. Something that needs to be reviewed to reduce packaging materials, overall.

The Digital Age Digital print for packaging is by no means new and its growth will continue unabashed according to Smithers Pira, especially in terms of inkjet. As average run lengths continue to fall, and brands continue to offer numerous product variations, additional pack sizes and one-offs, print buyers’ demands will change and digital adoption will increase. Not only will it rise, but it’s likely to happen at an accelerated rate as variations in language, colour, flavour and allergen-free alternatives are commissioned. Companies like Tonejet are leading the way, printing digitally and directly onto beverage cans and addressing the shortto-medium run requirements that are not possible in the current market. The supply chain reaction Simplified supply chains mean print for packaging can be produced and delivered at a much quicker rate. Smithers Pira predicts an increase in web-to-pack online order portals, reducing admin and prepress costs to a

minimum, estimating that by 2020, this type of online ordering may become the preferred method, even for medium length runs. In addition to our own predictions, the world’s leading market intelligence agency, Mintel has announced five trends that will impact the global packaging sector in 2018: Packaging will play a pivotal role in reducing global food and product waste. Online brands will reinvigorate their packaging to enhance the e-commerce experience. Brands who adopt clear and succinct package messaging will be rewarded as consumers prefer brands that embrace minimalism. Brands will be called to keep marine conservation at the forefront of packaging development and to anchor (no pun intended) the circular economy for future generations. Contemporary packaging formats will see the centre-of-store take centre stage. Well, all that said, the next few years are set to be exciting ones for the packaging landscape! We should all be prepared to do our bit for the environment, both as consumers and suppliers to the packaging industry. Farewell, trusted hot Tuttlingen, Germany, Binder + Wöhrle is convinced that inevitably, the time comes for even the most tried and tested technology to retire. The manufacturer of plastic pipes, profiles, and Bowden cables, which are used in cars from VW among others, has said goodbye to its old hot stamping machines for product marking. CIJ printers from Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG are now being used instead. They are more flexible, faster and do not directly touch the products. Are you familiar with Bowden cables? Maybe not by name. But if you ride a bicycle, then you are making use of the cables that Englishman Ernest Monnigton (1859-1904) invented. They transmit tensile and compressive forces and are also used in motorcycle and car gas and clutch cables – in the seat adjustment and hood opening mechanisms. What very few people know is that one of the leading manufacturers of plastic pipes, profiles and Bowden cables is located in the Black Forest, in Hausach near Offenburg, Germany. The company achieves a yearly turnover of over eight million euros and counts well-known companies such as VW among its customers.

The challenge: Hot stamping machines are reaching their limits As one of the technology leaders in plastic pipes, profiles and Bowden cables, Binder + Wöhrle strives to be at the cutting edge of technology. And this is why old technologies regularly give way to state-of-the-art solutions: an example being the hot-stamping machines which were used for product marking. They did a dependable job for years, printing pre-heated embossed marks on plastic sheets that peeled off and stuck to the product as a typeface. The hot stamping machines could be operated economically – but only at a time when little data had to appear on products. “Today things are very different,” explains Klemens Isele, Managing Director of Binder + Wöhrle. “We are required by law to provide a variety of product data – including product number, material identification and production date.”

The solution: Non-contact marking with CIJ printers In order to find the right labeling system, Isele did not even have to leave Baden-Württemberg. In fact, he found the perfect solution not far from home. In neighboring Tuttlingen, there is another world leader, not in Bowden cables, but in industrial marking systems: the Paul Leibinger company, founded in 1948. It produces the JET3up, a printer that meets Binder + Wöhrle’s requirements to a T. Since information is not fixed as in the case of a hot stamping machine, but rather it can be changed within seconds – five-line small fonts, graphics, barcodes and all common data matrix codes with a print height of up to 16 millimeters included. They change the trajectory of individual drops, so that they land as a pixel on the product surface and dry within one second. “With these printers, we are now able to label our products faster than ever and can implement product changes even more quickly,” says Isele. Information can be adjusted using a 10.4-inch touchscreen that is as easy to use as a smartphone. It’s the what-you-see-iswhat-you-get (WYSIWYG) principle at work. The set information appears one-to-one on the product, all without nerve-wracking test runs. Flying ink drops at work Another advantage of the JET3up is that, unlike with the hot stamping machine, the printer does not actually touch the product. This allows quick marking, which is gentle on the product and reduces the risk of breakage. The secret of this non-contact marking is

a technology called Continuous Inkjet (CIJ). It works within the cylindrical printhead, which looks directly at the product from above, and runs out of the extruder at a speed of around 200 meters per minute. In the printhead, which is connected to the hydraulics in the printer housing via an umbilical, 96,000 charged drops of ink per second shoot through a tiny nozzle in the direction of a collection pipe. When printing, two deflection electrodes come into play. They change the trajectory of individual drops, so that they land as a pixel on the product surface and dry within one second. This is how, as if by magic, black and white markings appear on the products, and the remaining drops fly straight into the catcher tube and circulate in the system. “You have to see this printer technology with your own eyes to believe it,” raved Isele. “Seemingly out of nowhere the information appears on the Bowden cable. Quickly and without ever touching the product.” JET3up_klein.jpg JET3up: The CIJ-Printer prints fiveline small fonts, graphics, barcodes and

all common data matrix codes with a print height of up to 16 millimeters included. The printers even have power reserves. They can keep up with speeds of up to 600 meters per minute – equivalent to 36 km/h. And it is always possible to increase line speeds without the marking systems causing a bottleneck. Thirteen printers are now being used at Binder + Wöhrle’s production facilities. Not only in the Bowden cable production, but also in the production of pipes and hoses – another one of the company’s business areas. A patented sealing system reduces cleaning requirements Isele is also impressed with the printers’ low operating costs. With a power consumption of about 30 watts, the devices use less power than a light bulb. The consumption of ink is equally low. With a liter of ink, the devices print 160 million characters – almost enough for the whole year. Moreover, maintenance and cleaning costs are low. Thanks to the automatic Sealtronic sealing system, which Leibinger developed itself, no elaborate cleaning is required before

production start. “When the printer is out of service or in standby mode, the nozzle and catcher tube remain open on many CIJ printheads, which results in the ink drying and the nozzle becoming clogged, which makes a lot of cleaning work necessary to ensure that the restart does not lead to a diffuse spit of ink and an indistinct typeface,” explains Christina Leibinger, Managing Proprietor of Paul Leibinger GmbH and Co. KG. This isn’t the case with Sealtronic. “During production stops, the catcher tube moves to the nozzle and closes the system airtight. When restarting, the typeface is immediately clear and stable – without cleaning and rinsing cycles, production can begin again immediately.” The outstanding reliability of the made-in-Germany printers was also an argument for opting for Leibinger when modernizing the company’s marking systems. “Printer reliability plays a key role for us,” says Isele. “If the labeling system fails for only a few minutes, several meters of valuable pipes and profiles become scrap.”

Downstream packaging waste a key issue China's plastic waste ban may force FMCG firms to make downstream packaging waste a key issue, says GlobalData “For now, the average consumer is likely to be oblivious to the plastic recycling crisis. Support for recycling is high, and the vast majority of global consumers see recyclable packaging as a core element of environmentallyfriendly packaging.” This reflects in GlobalData’s global consumer survey, in which 75% of consumers globally see recyclable packaging as an important factor in environmentally-friendly packaging.

China’s decision to stop importing recyclable plastic waste in January 2018 has left the world with little choice but to landfill recyclables for which no market now exists. The move, which is part of an initiative by China to focus on its own domestically-produced waste, is a wake-up call to the global recycling industry and may force FMCG companies to change their approach towards waste, and make downstream packaging waste a key issue and a major point-of-difference, says leading data and analytics company GlobalData. Prior to the ban, China was taking in over seven million tons of scrap plastic each year from Europe, the US and other parts of Asia, including Japan. Recyclers in China use it to produce pellets as raw material for everything from office furniture to fiber-optic cables. However, since the importation ban, waste plastic is stacking up globally as the supply far exceeds the demand. Developing markets like Vietnam and Malaysia have picked up some of the slack from China post-ban but

the industry consensus is that tighter regulations and increased taxes will prevent Southeast Asia from helping to maintain the status quo for plastic waste. Tom Vierhile, Innovation Insights Director at GlobalData, says: “Given that the days of exporting the waste plastic problem to China may be over, the only way out may be to stop creating so much plastic waste in the first place. If so, FMCG companies may soon find themselves on the front lines of the issue.

Vierhile concludes: “There is no way to be certain that the plastic waste a consumer has dutifully collected and presented for recycling is actually being recycled. If the cost of handling plastic waste were to double or triple from current levels, then consumers may be inclined to pay attention to the issue. “FMCG companies have the potential to force the issue too, by using packaging that does not depend on third-party recycling activities that may or may not take place, depending on market conditions. Sooner or later, an enterprising FMCG company is going to make downstream packaging waste transparency a key issue and a major point-of-difference.”

Sophisticated substrates in label sector growth Sophisticated label substrates have experienced exponential growth due to demand for high-end applications according FINAT’s latest findings. label companies on aggregate record an increase of almost 1.7 billion m2 in their annual demand since 2010. Geographically, established markets Germany, UK, Italy, France and Spain, still account for 58% of the total European market size with emerging Poland and Turkey catching up. They are expected to challenge the top five in the next few years.

Since 2010 demand for PP-based materials has grown 78%, direct thermal papers are up 51% and white coated papers enjoyed a 24% increase. The figures show that while paper based materials continue to dominate label materials demand, there has been a shift from basic primary and VIP labels towards more sophisticated, high-end applications. Jules Lejeune, FINAT Managing Director, comments: “The continued growth in demand for packaged consumer goods, especially in emerging economies, has increased the need for white, coated materials as endusers are looking to differentiate their branded products on the shelf. Labels containing variable product data in sectors like retail, logistics, process automation and inventory management demand an ever growing volume of direct thermal papers. But above all, the need for high quality (transparent) product decoration in high speed, high

volumes sectors like food, health and beauty care and premium beverages is driving the surge in the consumption of PP-based labels.” The trend is encouraging self-adhesive label producers to offer adjacent highend packaging solutions like pouches, sleeves and other flexible packaging items. They are also investing in the corresponding knowledge, facilities and accreditation programmes like in the case of food safety. These findings are based on the backdrop of a 4.7% European growth rate in total consumption of selfadhesive label materials, up to 7.45 million m2 in 2017, slightly below the 5.4% average over the preceding four years. Eastern Europe Drives Growth The continued evolution of Eastern European markets also remains a key growth driver and has helped European

There are, however, significant European disparities when comparing demand in terms of consumption per capita. While the European average of 9.7 m2 is approaching the 10 m2 benchmark, Denmark, Lithuania and The Netherlands (all small, export oriented countries) consumed almost 17.5 m2 per capita. The bottom 10 countries recorded consumption less than 5 m2 per capita. Among these are Romania, Russia and Turkey, between them representing almost 250 million inhabitants or onefifth of the total population in the countries under review. This indicates there is still a huge potential for future structural growth. This potential does not consider the continuously widening scope of the labels sector into short term flexible packaging. Short term outlook: signs of economic slowdown? There is a clear statistical correlation between roll labelstock demand and the general economic climate according to FINAT’s statistical agency Panteia. Unsurprising is the fact that labels are an essential enabler in a wide variety of sectors of the business community. Looking back, general economic cycle

Lejeune states: “Given the present uncertainties associated with Brexit, escalating trade wars between the EU and the US, continued trade sanctions against Russia and, finally, re-emerging concerns about the euro following the installation of the new Italian government, it should come as no surprise that the gap between annualised growth rates in the label industry and GDP has been shrinking in recent quarters after five years of continued well above GPP growth rates.” RADAR Signals Buoyant Markets FINAT’s other market research partners, LPC Inc. completed technical surveys and one-on-one interviews with brands across Europe for the spring 2018 edition of FINAT RADAR. It confirms the buoyant state of the label industry. Average annual sales growth over the past five years was 7.1%, although this slowed in 2017 compared to previous years. Interestingly the highest growth rates were recorded in non-prime markets like automotive, consumer durables and industrial chemicals while the largest labelling sectors of food and beverages continue to be among the top five growth markets.

Vietnam’s Oai Hung inves pharma production BOBST supplies a CL 850D laminator for high performance coldformed foil pharma packaging to Constantia Flexibles’ subsidiary Oai Hung (Vietnam). The BOBST CL 850D duplex laminator is part of the Constantia Flexibles Group investment to expand the operations of Oai Hung Manufacturing Joint Stock Co., the production site in Vietnam, that it is part of its pharma division since 2016. The CL 850D is due for delivery and installation in the cleanroom of the company’s state-of-the-art production facility in Ho-Chi-Minh City in the second half of 2018. Oai Hung is a company specialised in the production of aluminium blister foil and rigid film for the pharmaceutical market, as well as foil-based lids for dairy packaging. It has been pivotal to the Constantia Flexibles Group’s expansion in South East Asia. The Vietnam site is dedicated to serving these high-end market segments, which drove the decision to invest in new equipment at the leading edge of technology.

Production of Constantia Flexibles market-leading packaging materials for the pharmaceutical segment requires dedicated equipment. Coldformed foil packaging is a complex process both in terms of the actual material functionality and compliance with pharma regulations, and in terms of process workflow, operational efficiency and profitability. In order to meet all the exact specifications relating to output requirements and expected machine performance, Constantia Oai Hung and BOBST collaborated closely on the features of the CL 850D. The most complex type of production run on the CL 850D will be an OPAAlu-foil-PVC triplex compound structure. Biodegradable fibre packaging could catalyze shift away from black plastic With packaging producers under pressure to find a replacement for plastic, the latest contender could be Durapulp fibre, which is used to create biodegradable packaging to replace the black plastic trays often used in ready meals and raw beef products, according to data and analytics company, GlobalData. The producer, Finnish packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki, has been trialling Durapulp fibre in the UK ready meal category since May 2018 up until the end of June 2018. The company hopes that the trial will eventually lead to the adoption of biodegradable packaging in ready meals.

52 “The main issue with black plastic trays is the color. Black is used as it makes pack contents stand out better and appear more attractive on shelves. However, optical sorting equipment in recycling facilities has difficulty detecting black packs and most of the time fails to do so,” said Ryan Choi, consumer analyst at GlobalData. According to a report conducted by Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), most black plastic ends up in landfills rather than being recycled. Several UK-based companies have identified this as an issue and are looking to phase out black packaging despite the high costs involved. Waitrose is looking to phase it out completely by 2019, with Quorn Foods looking to do the same by 2025. “The main problems facing manufacturers of new packaging materials are the cost of manufacturing and how well the pack can last. Plastic was always the perfect solution, being cheap with a long life cycle – albeit too long,” Choi continued. “Although these packaging trials will highlight the usefulness of the packaging material in practice, ultimately the potential adopters of new packaging materials will always asses how well the new material delivers in these two key areas. If the new pack is not cost effective to produce at the same time as offering a long enough life cycle, it will not be adopted, even if it is more environmentally friendly.” Koenig & Bauer wins German Brand Award The press manufacturer achieved high accolade for brand management.
