Global print industry sho confidence across almo regions despite econom The 9th drupa Global Trends Report, to be published in November 2023, is a clear statement of increasing confidence across almost all regions and markets. Printers and suppliers alike forecast it will be even better next year; good for drupa 2024. The findings come from the 9th Global Trends in-depth survey, run this spring by Printfuture (UK) and Wissler (CH), when over 600 printers and suppliers from the drupa Expert Panel of senior decision makers. Globally 32% more printers and suppliers described their company’s economic condition as ‘good’ compared with those that reported it as ‘poor’. Amongst printers, almost all regions and markets were more buoyant than 2019, i.e. before Covid.

Richard Gray, Operations Director at Printfuture, stated: “While positive forecasts might be expected from Packaging and Functional printers, what was pleasing was the increasing confidence amongst Commercial and Publishing printers.” It would appear that commercial and publishing printers have weathered the worst of the impact of digitisation, are starting to plan ahead with more confidence. Higher prices bring more confidence The source of such confidence across all markets is clear from the financial performance figures provided. Globally 50% more printers raised prices in 2023 than lowered them, sustaining the pattern of last year, after the previous seven years of falling prices. Better revenues and margins have followed. This pattern was true across all markets, although there were regional variations. Digital adaption is growing The resilience of Sheetfed offset print volume across all markets is remarkable, matched amongst Packaging printers by growth in Flexo. Digital toner cutsheet colour print volume remains the leader among digital print technologies. Globally the digital adoption – printers claiming more than 25% of turnover in digital – is growing from 26% in 2014 to 29% in 2023. At first sight this

Print Innovation Asia Issue 11 2023

ows increasing ost all markets and mic headwinds

is only a modest growth. However, various industry sources show volumes have grown significantly since 2014 even though the digital adoption rate appears to be slowing down. Good prospects for investment Capital expenditure tumbled during Covid, recovered a little last year and accelerated this year with 27% more printers investing more in 2023 than those who reduced expenditure; a better global figure than any year since 2017. An even higher investment rate is forecast for 2024, by both printers and suppliers. In general print technology and finishing remain the most popular targets, with sheetfed offset and digital toner cutsheet colour being the most popular technologies globally, though there are significant variations by market.

Strong industry growth forecasts must of course be balanced by recognition of stiff economic headwinds, with the risk of recession, or at least damaging inflation, now outweighing the impact of the pandemic and a wide variety of more specific regional socio-economic concerns. Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa and Global Head Print Technologies at Messe Duesseldorf, commented: “Printers and Suppliers know they must innovate to succeed in the longer term. I am confident that drupa 2024 will be the ideal opportunity to explore how best to achieve this objective.” Infographics and obtaining the full reports Infographics showing the key findings are attached to this press release. The full report in English will be released by

mid of November and will be available for sale from www.drupa.com. The executive summary will be available for free in German, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese. About drupa Under the umbrella of the megatrends sustainability and digitalisation the international print and packaging sector will meet at drupa from 28 May to 7 June 2024. The world’s leading trade fair for print technologies is synonymous with inspiration, innovations, high-calibre knowledge transfer and intense networking. This is where the international top decision-makers of the industry meet and exchange ideas on current technology trends and ground-breaking developments. Tickets for drupa 2024 are now available in the ticket shop at www.drupa.com.

Support business growth and expand product offering The award-winning flatbed printer has enabled the company to print to a much more diverse range of substrates UK-based frame manufacturers Ultimat Frames has invested in a Fujifilm Acuity Prime 30 printer to support the expansion of its business and broaden its product offering. Established in 2004, Ultimat Frames manufactures and installs bespoke frames for businesses operating in the fine art and hospitality sectors. Dru Cook, Managing Director at Ultimat Frames, sought the Acuity Prime to print on a wider variety of materials and gain new business opportunities. He found that the flatbed printer delivered on quality and versatility, as well as offering impressive return on investment. Cook commented: “I wanted to expand Ultimat Frames’ product offering beyond standard printing and framing, and we knew investing in a UV printer would help us achieve this. The Acuity Prime has enabled us to create the high end, high quality products that we’re known for, and print on many more substrates – including glass.”

\Confirming Fujifilm as a trusted partner, Cook adds: “Fujifilm has been extremely supportive throughout the sales and installation process, with frequent interaction, including site visits and technology support. If I were to invest again, I’d come to the same conclusion.”

Cook also says that since investing in the Acuity Prime, the company has received orders for a variety of new applications, including substrates such as glass, leather, wood and acrylic. This has enabled the company to expand its product offering to high-end feature pieces, and durable artwork for hotels and cruise ships. The Acuity Prime was able to print direct to the substrate, reducing previous substrate size limitations, and has opened the door to working collaboratively with selfpublished artists to create new forms of presentation, thereby elevating their artwork and value. Andy Kent, Division Manager, Fujifilm Graphic Communications UK adds: “We’re delighted that such a huge range of businesses continue to see the production and business benefits of our wide format technology. Thanks to their Acuity Prime investment, Ultimat Frames now has the capability to print on more substrates than ever before, and they can do so cost-effectively and at exceptionally high levels of quality – opening up a raft of new business opportunities.”

How do we reach new print in corrugated pack Digital print has been promising broad transformation in corrugated for a long time. Significant progress has been made, but digital print today still only represents and addresses a small subset of corrugated print needs. New approaches are needed to broaden the reach and value of digitally printed corrugated packaging. Digital print transformation in the corrugated industry has been a promise waiting to happen for many, many years. Part of the reason for the delay could be the industry has been perceived as having one monolithic set of needs and digital print has been promoted as one generic solution to fit all of those needs. However, all corrugated needs and digital print solutions are not the same.

in several use cases and sub-markets including high quality graphics, samples, mock-ups, displays, shortrun, large format, double-sided print, and supply chain efficiency including turn-around time, but there are still a few other use cases like personalization and variable data that haven’t yielded transformation. Regardless, digital print still only addresses a fraction of the overall market for printed corrugated packaging. For this to change, we must ask “why” and eventually address the many gaps that exist today with the overall solution set.

The reality is much more nuanced. Indeed, there has been some progress

As suggested, the various digital print capabilities are nuanced. Digital

“The predominant issue with digital print is the production costs for a given run length compared to the analog alternative”

print solutions generally do not adequately address all substrate, board combinations, and form factors. Special requirements of the printed product like ink holdout, color, overprint varnish, coefficient of friction, durability, and gluability all play a part in what can or cannot be done by any given digital print solution. Specific press limitations might mean something can be done in limited quantities or certain situations but cannot be done at scale and remain cost effective. Digital print was and still is supposed to simplify, streamline, and accelerate the overall graphics, print process, and product development for the corrugated industry. Digital print in corrugated has been most successful in areas in need of disruption including samples, mock-ups, displays, and ultra short runs. However, to get at the bulk of the market, digital needs to contend with what analog printing does well day-in and day-out. It has been incrementally fine-tuned to provide the quality, productivity, reliability, equipment life expectancy, and cost structure that the market recognizes today. Different production workflows have evolved to meet various product requirements with different levels of efficiency. Digital print must do something better or different to provide more value than analog. Finally, digital printing must consider the macro trends and what the needs

By Robert Seay, Vice President of Digital Print Strategy and Growth, Georgia-Pacific

gital print transformation in the ugated industry has been a promise ing to happen for many, many years!” of tomorrow will be. These macro trend requirements include fast turnaround, short run lengths - for many different reasons - supply chain efficiency, eCommerce, lightweighting, sustainability, and automation that could make digital solutions more compelling in the future. The predominant issue with digital print is the production costs for a given run length compared to the analog alternative. For digital to win more broadly, it must look beyond just consumables cost and look at reducing overall value chain costs including running costs, maintenance, capital, useful life, and any other steps or parts that can be streamlined. Digital print, in general, has a big problem with amortization of the overall solutions supporting capital and infrastructure required. Certainly, for parts of the market already identified, digital print can work and add value. However, to get at the larger volume of work,

digital must either add new value and/ or improve cost structure to compete with optimized analog processes. It is encouraging to see there is a next generation of solutions being developed that will hopefully help make some of the necessary improvements to expand the segments of the market where digital can add value. With these solutions, they are addressing the broader value chain, reducing steps, and improving overall economics rather than just addressing print. For those of us who have been championing digital print and what is possible to transform the corrugated industry, the pace of progress is both encouraging and disappointing. There are pockets of great success, but there is also a lot of work to do to get us to the full transformation that all members of the value chain need. These improvements and new solutions

cannot get here fast enough. It will be exciting to see what is announced and shown at drupa 2024 to further drive the industry’s digital transformation. About the author Robert Seay is the Vice President of Digital Print Strategy and Growth at Georgia-Pacific. Robert has over twenty years of digital print innovation and implementation experience including time at both HP and GP with the last 14 years focused on packaging in generally and mostly targeted toward the corrugated market. “For those championing digital in the corrugated industry, the pace of progress is both encouraging and disappointing. Pockets of great success, but there is still a lot of work. It will be exciting to see what is announced and shown at drupa 2024”

The label printing industry, an ever-evolving market The label printing sector has always been a dynamic market. Brand owners are looking for increasingly innovative labels to differentiate themselves and convey current and targeted messages to consumers. The current trends are leading suppliers and converters towards solutions that focus on sustainability and innovation. In the last years label converters felt the need for automation at various product life cycle stages. A printed label is the visiting card of a product, the primary step in communication between the brand owner and the consumer. On the shelf, the label contributes to the buyer’s perception on a product. Looking at a product label, the customer can be caught by graphic design, colours or embellishment, and certainly the label has an impact on his purchase choice. But how do papers and embellishments influence the perception of a product? What elements of a label can visually express and summarize its essence? We know that for the same price and brand, it is the label that is most liked and able to create positive expectations about the product that is chosen. To explore the role of this communicative tool in wine purchasing, UPM Raflatac, leader in sustainable labelling, commissioned a neuromarketing research from research and consulting firm SenseCatch, in partnership with Argea, the largest Italian wine group, Kurz, world’s leading manufacturer of hot stamping and cold stamping technology, and Krämer Druck, one of Germany’s leading printers in the sector of wine labels. The study was conducted in Germany, an attractive market for wine exporters. A group of German consumers was shown 32 labels on the shelf, with the same design but different from each other in terms of paper type and refinishing. The entire customer

journey was reconstructed, from shelf observation and wine choice to product tasting. After choice, participants could observe, touch, and evaluate the bottles one at a time. Throughout the entire decision-making process, from the shelf choice of the bottle to the moment of tasting, consumers’ experience was analyzed using neuromarketing methodology. In the first "moment of truth," in front of the shelf, the results showed that during the choice in the first five seconds of observation, the bottles that attracted consumers' attention the most were those characterized by

18 Market trends in label printing According to Mordor Intelligence, the print label market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% over the forecast period 2023 – 2027. Different factors are driving the growth during the forecast period, such as an increasing demand for more attractive brands from print label customers, and a rising demand for manufactured goods. The growth of the e-commerce industry is another significant factor that is expected to fuel the adoption of printed labels over the forecast period. Challenges that the sector is facing are evident: a reduction in average job lengths and life cycles for massproduced products, and an increase in the regulatory content on the label. In the last years digital printing has been entered in this sector. This technology enhanced the possibilities to provide new applications in label design, meeting a growing market demand. Today printing technology suppliers are developing hybrid solutions, at

visual, color, or material juxtaposition contrast, such as those with dark paper and shiny, metallic ennoblement. On the other hand, the most observed labels were those characterized by lightcoloured paper with gold or bronze ennoblements. In addition, consumers' attention focused on bottles labelled with rough and textured papers, with obvious texture to the eye and embossed embellishments with a glossy effect. During the second "moment of truth," which is when the consumer physically interacted with the bottles, labels with textured papers and embellishments of the same color actually enhanced the embellishments themselves and were considered interesting and mysterious. The study found they stimulated the "tactile imagination" that anticipates the interaction experience. The thicker, embossed paper and the embossing made the lettering more visible and enhanced the design, changing the perception from an empty

and unattractive label - in the case of an embellishment of the same colour as the paper, devoid of embossing to a label that was instead curated and intriguing, enhancing expectations about the product. In this case, consumers imagined a higher quality wine, a premium product. Finally, the results showed that the combination of paper and embellishing influences expectations and has a positive effect on the perceived liking and taste of the wine. The same wine served from the bottle with the most appreciated label obtained a higher rating than when it was served from the bottle with the least appreciated label. The effect also occurred at a subconscious level; in fact, the emotional involvement measured through psychophysiological parameters was higher (+13%) when tasting the wine served from the bottle with the preferred label. In addition to influencing the likeability of the wine, the label also influenced perceived taste.

drupa 2024 new developments in hybrid presses will be shown. In the last years label converters felt the need for automation at various product life cycle stages. Because of less labour available for the industrial sector, human intervention becomes the bottle neck in the production chain. Automation and interconnectivity turn from a cost saving topic into a necessity for the industrial survival. In the area of workflow, the trend will be toward a cloud-based ecosystem. Today automation and digitalisation in the printing processes are a must have. Automation means integration of the systems into the factory production processes that allows remote service, real-time machine monitoring and reporting production data. Among the advantages of automation there are waste reduction, fast set-up, automated colour management, and reduced manual interventions.

Other possible steps in advancing technology will happen through the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning. For example, AI tools and programs make the design procedure autonomous; at the same time those tools can help by enabling identification of defective products so they can be easily removed from the final product. Sustainability factor The biggest challenge facing brand owners is meeting the changing landscape regarding the packaging sustainability, and in particular embracing the complexity of emerging directives if operating across different countries and regions. Just thinking about the recent updates of the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation in Europe that has brought new challenges which will clearly need to be addressed in the coming years. The introduction of design for recycling requirements will draw attention on label and container compatibility, in terms of material, inks, adhesive, and size coverage. Following customers’ requirements, self-adhesive label manufacturers are approaching and developing new solutions that are more ecological, but at the same time are also more economical and efficient. In order to achieve these goals, the main way is reducing the amount of material used. Release liner, that is used as carrier for labels, fulfil a crucial role in the production, conversion, and application of self-adhesive products. But after fulfilling their role in this process, used liners still have a role to play as valuable feedstock for new processes and products. Currently, many projects based on release liner recycling have been developing, in order to collect proportion of spent release liner for reuse or recycling. Release liner recycling is environmentally friendly: it contributes to the reduction of the ‘footprint’ of the label company. During the last edition FINAT European Label Forum, it emerged that label waste has been a challenge for the labelling industry for decades. Each year, millions of tons of label waste are sent to landfills and incinerators. Recycling programs like CELAB

can reduce label waste. But the best solution - for our industry and for the planet - is to ultimately eliminate liners altogether. Particularly in the food sector, designers and printers are facing another challenge regarding the finite space limits of labels. In fact, international health and safety legislation will require space on labels. This will encourage the use of multilayer leaflet labels and clear-film labels on clear-container substrates, giving products the 'no-label' look and making back-printing on the label possible. Label printing is reflecting the important role of digital technology in everyday life. From 28 May to 7 June 2024 in Düsseldorf, exhibitors at drupa will present new printing and finishing systems for labels production. Visitors will discover sustainable and innovative solutions for the future of the label industry. Red & Blue Printing Brightens the World with Colorful Printed Products Founded in 1965, Red & Blue Printing Co., Ltd., with over half a century of printing experience, primarily serves the high-quality commercial printing needs in the Zhonghe District of New Taipei City. Its main print products are catalogs, albums, and packaging for well-known brands. With the changing landscape of society and economics and the rise of digital printing technology, commercial printing work is gradually transitioning to digital printing. As Red & Blue Printing approaches its first year in a new plant, it aims to ride the wave of this transformation. In addition to its core competency in commercial printing, the company plans to take on the challenge of package printing, leveraging its years of professional experience to carve out new horizons in the packaging industry. In the competitive printing market, Red & Blue Printing actively promotes innovation. It not only incorporated a package printing line into its main production but also constructed a new plant in Yangmei District, Taoyuan City in 2019, officially commencing operation in August 2022. The new plant not only alleviates the congested conditions at the Zhonghe plant but also extends its diverse service

range. To comply with ISO 22000 food safety management requirements, Red & Blue Printing meticulously planned the facility as an energy-efficient, carbon-reducing, and food-safe plant, providing a full range of customized services. The three key features of its services are as follows: 1. One-Stop Service: From design to prepress, printing, postpress processing (varnishing, laminating, foil stamping, hot stamping, punching, window pasting, folding, gluing, saddle stitching, and manual assembly), and logistics. 2. High Reproducibility: G7 color management, professional highdefinition screen printing, and color correction to optimize dedicated image retouching service. 3.Environmentally Friendly Manufacturing Process: FSC certification, soy ink printing, alcoholChen Chao Hsiung, CEO

32 and Taiwan's Golden Print Award. Alongside other gold award recipients, the company is honored to contribute to further improving the quality of printing. Facility upgrades and efficiency improvements With the advent of the digital transformation era, Red & Blue Printing, as a result of many assessments, chose the Komori press as its partner for the transformation of the packaging printing market at the Yangmei plant. The innovative and automated features of the press along with corresponding to the company's needs were the primary reasons for this choice. Furthermore, the press offers stable performance and easy, quick maintenance. CEO Chen Chao Hsiung noted, "I personally appreciate many functions of the 6-color Lithrone G40 advance UV press. The most important is its PQA-S monitoring system, which guarantees quality." While Red & Blue Printing has used other manufacturers' presses for many years, it first considered adopting Komori machines after noticing them being installed by other printing companies. This is the first time Red & Blue Printing has introduced a Komori press, but the operators received training from Komori service staff and mastered the high-level functions of the Lithrone G40 advance. As functions that support printing, KHSAI significantly shortens plate-changing times, while PDC-SX and PQA-S contribute to achieving print quality control. The ink rollers are designed to be easily taken apart and reassembled,

ensuring swift, precise adjustment. The Human Interface Device offers an easyto-use intuitive display for operators. With the powerful performance of the highly automated Komori press, the company's productivity has improved by more than 30%. Those who most appreciate the high performance of the Komori press are the operators. On the day of the interview, Hsu Yu-Li, the printing press operator, printed a 650g/m2 job at 13,000 sph, stating enthusiastically, "We are printing 5,000 sph faster than with conventional presses, but the speed is

stable and there is no print blurring. It's truly an excellent press." He adds, "We expected the 6-color Lithrone G40 advance UV press to meet and even exceed customer quality requirements. In reality, the Komori press guarantees the quality that customers demand, and we are satisfied with its productivity and print quality. Additionally, when customers visit our company, they are amazed by the press's stylish appearance and the large KID display that provides multifunctional printing information. For example, KID can show enlarged dots, enabling instant communication with customers and offering the sense of a different printing experience. We confirmed that the new press meets our requirements, and now all products developed at the Yangmei plant, including food packaging, pharmaceuticals packaging, cosmetics, and export orders, are printed on the Komori press." Social responsibility and environmental sustainability To transform the Yangmei plant into an energy-efficient, low carbon dioxide-emitting, and food-safe facility, Red & Blue Printing obtained ISO 22000 food safety management. company also installed a solar power generating system and eco-friendly processing equipment in the plant, and an ecological park is set behind the plant. The newly introduced Lithrone G40 advance is designed for energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions reduction. "We have tried our best to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, allowing the entire plant to achieve more than 40% energy savings and reduced carbon dioxide," says plant manager Tseng Chih Cheng. Red & Blue Printing places a strong emphasis on energy-efficient and carbon dioxidereducing facilities such as: 1. Solar Power Generation System Installed 634 solar panels in the plant, capable of generating approximately 212,000 kWh of electricity annually, leading to an annual reduction of 111 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. 2. Environmentally Friendly CTP Direct Production Press Not only space-efficient but also with low running costs for water and electricity. 3. 6-color Lithrone G40 advance UV Press with PQA-S Print Quality Assessment System

Automation devices, including FullAPC automatic platechanger, KHSAI, PDC-SX Spectral Print Density Control, and PQA-S Print Quality Assessment System, enhancing productivity and quality throughout the printing process. The press also reduces the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during the printing process, complies with RoHS requirements, and reduces machine noise levels, minimizing the environmental impact of the printing process and protecting the natural environment. 4. Air Conditioning System Distributed Duct System Compared to conventional ducts, the system provides better air conditioning uniformity, reducing the initial plant air conditioning demand from 60 tons to

Creating a win-win through professionalism and enthusiasm In the future, Red & Blue Printing will inherit the achievements it has nurtured and align with the company's vision of "striving to become an innovative enterprise and making printing applications advance with the times," so the company will continue to enhance its printing technology and provide services that customers trust. To ensure service quality for customers and offer a more diverse range of printing services, Red & Blue Printing has obtained certifications such as ISO 22000 Food Safety Management, ISO 9001 Quality Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Protection Management, SA 8000 Social Accountability, Forest Stewardship Council Chain-ofCustody Certification, and G7 Color Management. The company plans to further its development in areas such as (1) process and quality improvement, (2) diverse technological research, (3) innovative product development, (4) active expansion into overseas markets, and (5) environmentally conscientious sustainable management to achieve the mission of "promoting social progress and development through our enthusiasm and professionalism."

Enabling Brands to Ac Targets and Unlock G Packaging is an integral part of every brand’s success. Along with product formulation and brand equity, functional packaging helps consumers connect with brands and create unique product preferences.

our collective progress toward building a safer, healthier, more sustainable future.

Creating innovative dispensing closures to help brands stand out, reshape market categories and deliver on consumers' convenience and safety has been Aptar’s history for more than 75 years. During the last decade, we have been thoroughly investing in building deeper expertise and partnerships to stay ahead of the increasing demands for sustainable solutions and address the current and upcoming sustainability standards and legislation in every region of the world. With that, our goal is to provide brands with ongoing and distinct opportunities to transform markets with breakthrough sustainable packaging solutions.

Committed to Increasing Plastic Circularity We partner with the world’s leading brands, and millions of people rely on our products every day. Our purpose — to transform ideas into solutions that improve everyday life — shapes how we meet their evolving expectations and enable consumers, customers, community partners and our employees to join us in creating a more sustainable future together. We collaborate with multiple industry partners and with many of the leading sustainabilityfocused organizations, such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to create dispensing closure solutions that integrate world-class sustainability principles. This, in turn, helps advance

Two critical goals we share with many global Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) brands are to achieve fully recyclable packaging and to incorporate recycled content in packaging by 2025. To that end, as a company, at Aptar we are committed to bringing to market 100% of solutions that are reusable, recyclable or compostable, and to achieving 10% recycled content for our dispensing solutions by 2025 within the personal care, beauty, home care, food and beverage markets. Materials Expertise A critical facilitator of sustainability efforts is staying ahead of and up to date with trends in materials – both sourcing and the creation of the most effective materials for the manufacturing of our closures. This includes proactively removing unnecessary materials from the manufacturing process; using

chieve Sustainability Growth Opportunities recyclable and recycled materials where possible; staying abreast of the latest recycling, composting and waste management trends, and more. Our product sustainability experts and product developers are continuously working to refine our material selection process to ensure we are using the best materials and the most sustainable manufacturing approach possible – a landscape that is changing daily. As an example, we have been PureCycle Technology’s preferred converting partner for the last four years, investigating applications for Ultra-Pure Recycled PP (UPRP). Incorporating more post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials within the industry, like UPRP, will allow Aptar, other packaging manufacturers, and our customers the ability to contribute to a more circular economy by reducing the quantity of fossil-based plastic and increasing the use of lower-carbon, recycled materials. Positioned to Make a Difference Our goal is to ensure that our customers worldwide can continuously rely on us as a partner for solutions that meet their current and upcoming needs.

We rely on a team of highly skilled experts to prioritize solutions that enhance plastic circularity and meet the demands of convenience, safety, shelf appeal and a superior consumer experience. This commitment aligns with our core values as a company and our passion as a responsible, inclusive, global corporate citizen. One of our notable efforts towards sustainability is our SimpliCycle recyclable flow control valve. Made from a low-density material (density<1), the valve floats during the recycling

sorting process, allowing it to be easily separated from the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) stream and then recycled right along with the polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) olefin stream. When assembled into an Aptar closure, SimpliCycle creates a fully recyclable solution for use with PET, PE or PP containers, enabling brands to achieve their fully recyclable packaging goals. The SimpliCycle recyclable valve has received two prestigious awards: the Best CSR/Sustainability Initiative by

These materials, that would previously have been sent to landfills, can now be collected and directed to a resin supplier, who applies the processing steps of grinding, washing, gas extraction and more to create a novel type of plastic resin pellets. These pellets are now used by Aptar Closures to produce closures for TRESemmé® hair care product lines. This novel method not only creates value for the recycled material but also contributes to a more circular life cycle for BOPP films in Brazil.

the World Food Innovation Awards (WFIA) in 2021, and a Packaging Innovation award by the World Packaging Association (WPO) in 2022. It also received Critical Guidance Recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in North America, a recognition that acknowledges technologies or packaging components that aim to solve long-standing problems in sustainable package design. SimpliCycle has been assessed by third parties in Europe, such as Cyclos and RecyClass, confirming its compatibility with the readily available sorting and recycling sectors in the region. All of Aptar’s products are designed with the people and our planet in mind, including Maestro, a dispensing closure developed for the edible oil market. Maestro is a fully recyclable solution, with a tethered cap and a non-detachable tamper evidence system to increase the likelihood that all parts remain together through the recycling stream. In addition, Purity Lite is the first low-profile tube top in North America. It is a lightweight and recyclable solution that is mono material when paired with HDPE tubes, helping brands reach their goal of fully recyclable packaging.

We are continuously looking for ways to reduce weight and eliminate or minimize the use of additional materials that contribute to plastic waste, such as liners and shrink wrappers. Slide, our newest linerless development for the sauces and condiments market, features a non-detachable tamper evidence system which allowed us to eliminate the need for a non-recyclable foil liner. With Slide, the consumer can access their product with one opening gesture, delivering a convenient and memorable packaging experience while still protecting product shelf life and reducing the potential for product tampering. Our portfolio offers these and many more examples of how Aptar can help brands achieve success in multiple areas, primarily in innovation, sustainability and consumer experience. Helping Brands Make a True Impact As a result of the expertise and creativity of our engineers and product managers, we have been able to deliver highly innovative solutions to the market. For example, Aptar Closures and

Although the world has recently seen a major push to increase plastic circularity coming from brands, consumers and legislators worldwide, sustainable innovation is by no means a new focus for Aptar. We have historically focused on leveraging innovation to create solutions that improve convenience and safety while keeping the people and our planet in mind. Looking Ahead While Aptar Closures has made strides toward its aggressive sustainability goals, we are not stopping here. We continue to demonstrate our commitment to designing products and processes with people and the planet in mind. We remain dedicated to innovating solutions while addressing recyclability with existing plastics recycling stream “at scale and in practice,” converting to lower-carbon resin and designing for circularity. Aptar is dedicated to collaborating with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to achieve their vision for a more circular plastic economy. As the regional ecosystem is key to helping brands achieve their sustainability ambitions, we are members of and collaborate closely with RecyClass in Europe and the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in North America. We are also partnering on developments with PureCycle and Nextloopp, among others, to accelerate the development and deployment of sustainable solutions to the market.

Sinwa renews and expands its collaboration with XSYS Leading Chinese platemaker Sinwa Printech, also known as Sinwa, has recently integrated a ThermoFlexX Catena-WDLS washer, dryer, light finisher, and stacker unit from XSYS into its operations. This strategic investment aims to elevate the level of automation within the trade shop’s workflow and enhance the quality of its flexo plates. Willstaett, Germany. 07 November 2023 – A subsidiary of Taiwan Sinwa Printech Group, Sinwa Shanghai was founded in Shanghai, in 2000. Since then, it has expanded by establishing branches with facilities in multiple cities. As a trailblazer in technology, Sinwa was the first trade shop in China to introduce CDI plate imager technology. In 2015, it took another step forward with the installation of a state-of-the-art nyloflex® NExT Exposure from Flint Group to provide added value to its customers. This commitment to innovation has earned the company numerous awards over the years, as well as the loyalty of its printer customers in the labels and packaging industry. Building on its well-established relationship with Flint Group (now XSYS), the latest introduction at Sinwa is a highly automated and integrated ThermoFlexX Catena-WDLS washer, dryer, light finisher, and stacker system. This cutting-edge technology streamlines the platemaking workflow by minimizing the need for manual intervention, enabling

fully optimized plate production with very low waste. “Since the installation a few months ago, the Catena-WDLS has performed exceptionally well, providing high consistency and stability. The new system has been instrumental in simplifying our platemaking process, improving standardization levels, raising quality consistency, and boosting overall efficiency,” stated Mr. Michael Lin, President of Sinwa. The ThermoFlexX Catena-WDLS unit sets a new benchmark for automation in modern flexo plate processing. Once a plate is loaded into the machine, it operates seamlessly without the need for any additional operator involvement or interaction until the plate emerges fully finished and ready for cutting or dispatch. “The operators quickly became comfortable with the new integrated system. They no longer need to monitor each process step closely or transport

plates from one unit to the next. They also appreciate the cleaner workshop environment resulting from the WDLS’s fully enclosed environment and efficient extraction,” added Mr. Michael Lin. The demand in China for higher levels of automation in platemaking is set to continue, promising to reshape the landscape of flexo printing. XSYS stands at the forefront of this transformation with its advanced technology portfolio including the end-to-end fully automated Catena+ solution, which integrates the Catena-WDLS system. “XSYS is very proud to partner with Sinwa, an innovation leader, as we pave the way in automated flexo platemaking. In this era of process digitalization, XSYS enables platemakers to transition from mechanization to full automation, helping to reduce costs, deliver highest quality, and improve sustainability,” commented QiHong-Magenta Zheng, General Manager, XSYS China.

Cobots are accelerating packaging innovation The growth of digitization in food and beverage production processes has enabled Cobots to offer new manufacturing capabilities with the automation of previously difficult to automate processes. Global sales of industrial robots, valued at $20.7 billion in 2022, comprising 33% of the total robotics market, are being propelled by the digitization of production processes. A key development of digitization in food and beverage manufacturing is the increased use and capability of “Collaborative Robots” (Cobots), which are designed to work alongside humans within a shared space. Against this backdrop, GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company forecasts that the global industrial robots market is set to grow at a CAGR of 10% between 2022 and 2030 to reach $45.1 billion in 2030. Assisted by AI, Cobots are extremely versatile in comparison to traditional manufacturing robotic solutions. One example is the palletization process where a Cobot can stack boxes directly from the production line onto a pallet ready for being moved by a human but with advanced sensor technology to prevent contact with anyone in the production hall.

“Cobots offer companies more capability and control in the manufacturing process with less downtime and a reduced reliance on human intervention,” said George Higgins Packaging Consultant Consumer Custom Solutions at GlobalData. “This leads to greater productivity and the opportunity to grow market share with packaging

innovation produced on more efficient production lines at a lower cost.” Cobot integration into production processes Cobots are being integrated into the production processes of key packaging manufacturers such as packaging giants Tetra Pak and specialists Sealed Air. Tetra Pak is developing machinery to work in tandem with their own packaging systems, which not only simplifies the integration of Cobots in the manufacturing process but also adds value to the packaging applications they provide for the food and beverage industry. A key development here is Tetra Pak’s integrated data collection system called the ‘Data Gateway’, which can be retrofitted to older machinery, to feed data into their Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) analytics platform, which helps to monitor and manage factory operations. Sealed Air is working in partnership with Japanese electronics firm OSARO to explore the new production capabilities

offered by automated Cobot solutions, and this summer, automated machinery manufacturer OMRON, installed one of their Cobots at Ice Bakers, a Danish producer of plant-based ice cream. The Cobot is used to support their end-ofline packaging process which OMRON claims has increased the overall line capacity of the ice cream manufacturer by 80% while minimising the requirement for human involvement in the process. The Rise of RaaS and AaaS supporting Cobot sales The increased use of Robotics and AI applications in the production process has given rise to two new AI services: Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) – where robotics companies offer a subscription model for customers to use their robot devices – and Automation-as-a-Service (AaaS) – where companies offer their customers on-demand tailored automation services to optimize manufacturers operations. In 2020 a study entitled: “Impact of Robotics on Manufacturing: A Longitudinal Machine Learning Perspective,” * authored by Ballestar et al, was conducted by the Spanish Ministry of Finance and Public Administration. Based on a sample of 4,578 companies from their

Business Strategy Survey, the study found that “Both small to mediumsized businesses (SMEs) and large firms benefit from transformation to robotics” and “Transformed companies become more resilient to unfavorable financial events.” Higgins added: “With the enablement of digitization, the implications of introducing more Cobots into packaging production halls are huge as they offer new methods for optimizing production lines, gathering operational data, and increasing ROI for warehouse ‘machinery’ and robots. This will all have a massive impact on packaging

companies customers profitability.

“Savvy packaging companies also have an investment opportunity here to create a fully integrated packaging solution for their clients as Tetra Pak has done, and as a result, we are also likely to see more M&A activity in the space, such as packaging machinery provider Bobst, who acquired a 70% stake in Ducker robotics. Companies that can upskill existing staff to learn how to use the software that controls robot automation will become leaders in the industry.”

Allen Signs has become a world first company to invest in Fujifilm’s new Acuity Prime Hybrid printe UK-based signage and vehicle livery specialist Allen Signs has become the first company to invest in Fujifilm’s new Acuity Prime Hybrid printer. The ground-breaking machine, which was released earlier this year, is highly versatile due to its ability to handle both rigid and flexible media. The family-run wide format business was established in 1965, and since then, has been producing a variety of different signage applications for its consumers.David Allen, the company’s Managing Director, says his interest

in the Acuity Prime Hybrid stemmed from its versatility and economical ink consumption. Allen comments: “Due to our familiarity with hybrid platforms, we sought the Acuity Prime Hybrid as an opportunity to explore the Fujifilm brand further. The printer has now allowed us to carry out our normal production with minimal issues and excellent quality and ink performance.” Allen adds that the Acuity Prime Hybrid’s versatility has enabled his business to print on a wider variety of substrates more efficiently and costeffectively. The machine is already being used to print on wall coverings, direct to board and even metallic surfaces. Impressed by the printer’s ease of use, Matt Ryder, Print Specialist at Allen Signs, says: “We tried a job on the new Fujifilm machine, and instantly, it tracked. It was perfect. As for materials, we are yet to come across a substrate that doesn’t work.”

50 Having built a partnership, based on trust, with Fujifilm, Allen adds: “Fujifilm has been an absolute breeze to deal with. The installation and the training were extremely quick and efficient. I’m looking forward to seeing how the Acuity Prime Hybrid printer will allow us to expand our business in the future.” Andy Kent, Division Manager, Fujifilm Graphic Communications UK, states: “We are delighted to hear that our wide range of customers are more than satisfied with our printing technologies. As a result of Allen Signs investing in our Acuity Prime Hybrid, they have seen significant increases in print quality and a reduction in costs, whilst expanding their substrate selection. It’s fantastic to see them exploring new business opportunities.” Faster job set-ups, lower energy costs and reduced substrate and consumables wastage Faster job set-ups, lower energy costs and reduced substrate and consumables wastage top the list of benefits that Walki Jatne, Poland has enjoyed since standardizing its flexo printing process around KODAK FLEXCEL NX Technology in 2016. Walki Poland is part of the Finnish Walki Group, a leading producer of protective packaging materials and technical laminates. Based in Jatne, 40km south-east of Warsaw, the plant specializes in printed ream wrapping for A4 and A3 cut-size paper, and printed materials for the food industry. Developing more sustainable alternatives to materials is central to Walki Group’s business philosophy —

the group defines its mission as “to accelerate the world’s transformation to a circular, resource-efficient, lowcarbon future”. For Walki Poland, this translates into converting brand owners to more recyclable packaging solutions, and flexo as a process that is not only more sustainable than gravure but also capable of matching gravure for quality. Variety of substrates are major production challenge Before switching to FLEXCEL NX Plates, the wide variety of alternative, more sustainable substrates posed a major production challenge for Walki Poland’s Prepress and Printing Manager, Pawel Chustecki. “Materials range from film, through papers extruded with PE, to rougher, uncoated kraft stocks. Each substrate required a different plate and anilox, and new press settings. With some production runs as short as 3000 meters, it’s not unusual to have ten or more set-ups per day on each of our ten-color presses. Complicating matters were the water-based inks we print with and set-ups and changeovers were giving us a real production headache.” For Pawel and his team, the remedy was clear — “We had to standardize our processes” — but the solution was frustratingly elusive. After various trials to find more simplified plate solutions failed, it fell to the company’s technology department to suggest FLEXCEL NX Technology with its advanced plate surface patterning. Dramatic and swift changes The results were both dramatic and swift, Pawel recalls. “Almost immediately we could see how the

superior ink transfer of FLEXCEL NX Plates with advanced plate surface patterning achieved stable, repeatable results across all substrates and across the full width of the web — even on the rougher materials where you need high pressures to get good coverage. And because FLEXCEL NX Plates deliver the highest densities with low dot gain we could achieve a very wide color gamut — often exceeding the ISO coated V2 color profile. As an example of the ‘before and after’ transformation enabled by FLEXCEL NX Technology, Pawel cites a job printed on an older, geared, wide web press. “The design comprised a logo and a lot of small text, the impression was one meter long and over one meter wide, and our previous plate couldn’t handle it. On one side there was excessive pressure, and on the other there were areas that just didn’t print. We switched to the FLEXCEL NX Plate and everything was perfect. This was an important experiment, because it immediately convinced our operators that FLEXCEL NX Plates were up to the most challenging jobs.” Improved ‘proof-to-print’ The stable results achieved with FLEXCEL NX Plates have also simplified and streamlined proofing. Pawel comments: “In the past, the lack of consistency and stability on press’ could make matching proof and print tricky, but now it’s rare for agencies or clients to raise any queries. This is because we can achieve the same ISO coated V2 color profile to which the agencies produce their proofs.” Exploring ECG With FLEXCEL NX Plates having proven their ability to deliver consistently on a wide variety of substrates, operators benefit from having to learn only one plate type, faster proof to print and less inventory to manage. Walki’s successful process stabilization project has laid the foundation for further technologies that open new frontiers in sustainability and efficiency. These include ECG (Extended Color Gamut) printing: “Moving into ECG has been on our radar for some years, because of the efficiency and sustainability the technology makes possible — printing

But you can’t print ECG unless you have stable, repeatable plates, and we didn’t have those until we found FLEXCEL NX Technology. With the stable process we now have ECG is a very real possibility in the future.” Sun Chemical today announces the launch of its new groundbreaking ‘Pace’ technology platform for sheetfed offset inks. New groundbreaking ‘Pace’ technology platform for sheetfed offset inks. SunPak FSP, Sun Chemical’s flagship sheetfed offset low migration ink for food packaging, will be the first ink to transition to the new technology with the launch of SunPak FSP EcoPace. The inks are designed to support optimal productivity on highspeed modern printing machines and have strong sustainability credentials. In an era marked by faster machines, lower-quality papers, cost pressures, and sustainability goals, printers are encountering more challenges than ever before. Sun Chemical recognises these challenges and, as a result, is introducing this revolutionary ink based on innovative binder technology providing higher body and lower tack.

The benefit of the new technology has been proven through rigorous long-term testing to deliver the highest levels of productivity, the lowest applied cost, and the best overall sustainability benefits. Sun Chemical’s dedication to compliance and certifications also ensures that Sun Chemical’s products not only meet but exceed current regulatory requirements. Pace technology delivers Sun Chemical’s most sustainable offerings yet. This is achieved through a dual approach of selecting vegetable oil based formulations in which PTFE wax is not used. These formulations deliver the highest bio-renewable content (BRC) supplemented by exceptional performance on press that ensures minimal wastage of paper/ board and subsequently reduced usage of energy and solvent wash through fewer stoppages. The SunPak FSP EcoPace ink range is based on a modular approach that allows printers to interchange the process colours in order to optimise sustainability credentials. For example, in the standard CMYK offering, the inks have a C2C Certified Material Health Certificate™ at Bronze level but this can be upgraded to Platinum by interchanging the process yellow to a special version.

Additionally, the process inks have a high average bio-renewable content (BRC) rating of 78%, which can be increased further with the introduction of an optional special high BRC process Black that is based on nonfossil fuel sourced carbon, achieving a BRC of 89%. These inks are designed to perform impressively across a wide range of paper and board materials, ensuring flexibility and outstanding results for customers. Jim Buchanan, Global Product Director Sheetfed Systems, Sun Chemical, comments: “Sun Chemical recognises that in such a challenging market, high level productivity is vital to success. The primary objective for the development of this novel technology was to deliver the most stable high-quality performance across a diverse range of printing requirements, including the most challenging of substrates, while ensuring low misting on high-speed modern printing machines. The technology ensures robust, lithographically stable inks that also support short run production due to its fast responsive nature on both closed loop and manually adjusted colour control systems. We are grateful to our loyal customers who have partnered with us on this development and validated the technology over a significant period of time across many diverse printing conditions. We are delighted that they are now reaping the benefits and pushing the boundaries in terms of productivity and efficiency.” Sun Chemical’s new inks promise to redefine the possibilities of sheetfed printing, elevating customers’ projects to exceptional heights. This groundbreaking advancement underlines Sun Chemical’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of customers and setting new standards in the industry. The launch of these inks stands as a testament to Sun Chemical’s commitment to empowering its customers and partners with cutting-edge solutions that drive success in a rapidly changing market.”
