11th asian print awards 2013 - the only regional awards oF its kind in asia The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. New toner opens up a range of new opportunities for label converters Xeikon, an innovator in digital color printing technology, today announces the launch of a new toner for its digital label presses. The ICE toner will be demonstrated at Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, and will be available for customers as from Q4-2013. Part of the Xeikon Label Suite, the new toner is ideal for heat sensitive substrates including PE facestock (polyethylene) and thermal labels. This will open up the potential for a whole range of new applications. PE has a good flexibility and pliability, making it widely used for the surface of packaging that is used on regular and irregular containers that have to be kept away from humidity and chemical solvents. Typical examples include tubes and bottles which need to be squeezable, or bags that need to be pressed. “Until now, dry toner technology was not expected to be able to work with substrates for this type of jobs. Following requests from our user base, Xeikon specifically developed the ICE toner to be suited for heat sensitive materials. We pushed back the boundaries in toner development and digital label printing. ICE toner is undoubtedly again a real breakthrough in dry toner technology driven by Xeikon,” says Lode Deprez, Vice President Consumables & Process Group at Xeikon.

ICE toner is based on the proven Xeikon QA technology, bringing the renowned benefits including top printing quality, high lightfastness, top opaque white quality and being able to print on conventional substrates without the need of specific priming. ICE toner will run on all new and installed Xeikon 3000 Series digital presses, and has already undergone extensive tests in the field with a number of existing customers.

“The new ICE toner is tailored to the needs of our label customers. Xeikon listens to its customers, and has a team dedicated to product development in this area of the market. ICE toner has been designed to perform at the right temperature, and has been engineered to perfection for this additional demand, delivering only the very best in Xeikon quality. With ICE toner digital label production has just become even more versatile and powerful,” adds Filip Weymans, Director Segment Marketing and Business Development Labels and Packaging at Xeikon. Label converters have a tremendous opportunity to evaluate their own PE labels printed on a Xeikon 3000 Series digital press through www. SeeTheProof.com. This website enables converters to upload their files and have them printed on several substrates including PE. The printed results can be picked up at Xeikon’s booth, 9H45, at Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, September 24 to 27, 2013.

Bell & Bain orders world’s first Jet Press 540W Bell & Bain Ltd, based in Glasgow, UK, is the first company in the world to place an order for Fujifilm’s digital inkjet web press, the Jet Press 540W. Founded in 1831, Bell & Bain Ltd specialises in the printing and binding of business, educational, financial, medical, scientific and religious books, and learned journals. As Stephen Docherty, managing director at Bell & Bain Ltd, explains, technology investments have always underpinned the company’s development: “We have always maintained a lead on our competitors by investing in equipment and technology that preserve our standing as one of the leading book printers in the UK. Our investment in the Jet Press 540W allows us to continue this tradition. “We first saw the press at drupa 2012 as part of our initial research into new technologies on the market, with a view to understanding how our business could benefit from incorporating inkjet into the production environment. At the time, we felt that none of the inkjet devices we saw were quite up to the

high quality standards that we adhere to, but happily this had changed when we took another look at the Jet Press 540W in January 2013 during a number of visits to Fujifilm’s demo facility in Brussels. The consistent high quality output in combination with the ‘no click‘ business model on which the Jet Press 540W is based, made it the most attractive investment on the market, and the decision making team here at Bell & Bain were confident enough to sign on the dotted line.“ Due for installation in July 2013, the Jet Press 540W will replace Bell & Bain’s incumbent black & white tonerbased continuous feed device. As Stephen explains: “The investment in the Jet Press 540W will complement our existing offering, by enabling us to produce digitally the high quality colour products for which we’re

renowned.” He concludes: “We are already forerunners in the digital book printing market and we’re coinfident that the addition of the Jet Press 540W to our equipment portfolio will allow us to go from strength-to-strength, working alongside customers to fulfil their needs and requirements, better than ever before.“ Chris Broadhurst, national sales manager, Fujifilm Graphic Systems UK, comments: “We’ve worked alongside the team at Bell & Bain for many years now and are very proud to be in a position to be able to facilitate the introduction of digital inkjet into their business. It’s also great news for the UK print industry that wellestablished printers, such as Bell & Bain, are still investing, to stand their businesses in good stead for tomorrow and beyond.“

Digital Technology

Versatility + Flexibility = Growth and Margin That is the principle MGI Digital adopts in the industry, Raymond Pena Jr, International Director of Sales and Communications, explains to Christel Lee of Print World Asia.

On the fourth day of China Print, MGI Digital’s booth was busy. Every piece of equipment on display was accompanied by at least six curious visitors wanting to see what the company had to offer. It was also MGI Digital’s maiden show in China. The JETvarnish 3D was seemingly the star of the show for MGI and the company has secured at least three sales, according to Pena. It features spot UV coating at speeds up to 3,000 B2/20 x 29" sheets per hour and new 3D raised effects up to 100 microns in thickness. These beautiful tactile effects allow end users to differentiate their brands and add a new dimension of visual appeal to a wide range of projects, such as book covers, brochures, business cards, pocket folders, postcards, packaging, photo books, greeting cards, announcements and more.

mgi-jetvarnish

The JETvarnish 3D’s 100 percent digital operation requires no plates, screens or expensive makeready, perfect for runs from one to thousands or more. Other key features include sheet sizes up to 20 x 42", full variable data capabilities, MGI’s ARC camera system that ensures precise registration to printed pages, plus 3D effects compatibility with most digital or offset prints and no lamination required. “Sales have been exceptional here. We are working with Wilson Leading Technology (Shenzhen) Ltd, our distributor in China, and they are carrying both our digital finishing solution and our inkjet technology for finishing,” Pena notes. The ‘new kid on the block’ appears to be unfazed by industry watchers

who may be critical of the company’s late entry into the market in China. “Timing is everything; MGI Digital is a company that will come in only when there’s a product that brings value to our customers. Our vision is very simple – to bring digital and finishing solutions that will enable our customers to continue to grow and expand their business. Most importantly – to be able to increase margins, which is the key,” he explained. Although success is apparent for the company in the republic, Pena remains steadfast in being cautious in its sales approach due to the threat of local players. He illustrates, “As International Sales Director, I do a lot of seminars and teachings with my distributors. My principle is never to tell anyone we are better. We are all good in what we do. What makes us different is our application. We are the only manufacturer that can print on up to 350gsm paper, up to 400micron plastic, 13 x 40 in standard production (33 x 102cm). “We also have offset technology with a feeding system – double sheet detector, automatic side registers to maintain 2mm registration and an infra red lamp to remove humidity. These are the things that make us different – allowing customers to expand into other applications apart from just putting ink on paper.” MGI Digital is the winner of multiple international awards for print and engineering.

launch of GMG ProductionSuite 2.0 GMG announces the version 2 release of ProductionSuite, an update of the most complete production solution for wideformat printing. Highlights include a very easy to use version of SmartProfiler to profile all combinations of printers, media, inks, etc; more powerful Layout tools; and a new interior decoration option — along with a new, GMG ProductionSuite Focus edition. GMG ProductionSuite offers the entire range of functions required in a wide-format production environment. GMG ProductionSuite is modular, comprising of a prepress file Editor, RIP, SmartProfiler and PrintStation. It currently supports over 1,000 output devices. A flexible licensing model permits custom installation: from a simple configuration on one computer with only one RIP, one Editor and functions for driving one or two output devices, all the way to an extensive decentralized configuration with several editors that can send jobs to over ten printers and cutters. With additional functions, such as industrial cutting, true shape nesting, and screenand variable data printing, GMG ProductionSuite also fulfills some of the more unique requirements of wide format printing.

Updated SmartProfiler 2.0: Same reliable high-quality color management—even easier to achieve. GMG SmartProfiler is a wizard for the calibration and profiling of all supported print devices without requiring expert knowledge of color management. With highly automated SmartProfiler color management, printers get guaranteed repeatability without any need for expert color knowledge – even with spot colors. ProductionSuite 2.0 features a new, automatic rendering intent. “While most profiling and color management tools may require an operator to go through a number of ‘trial and error’ steps to obtain a satisfactory separation, in SmartProfiler 2.0 GMG takes responsibility for building the profile,” explains Markus Finkbeiner, Director

Business Unit Wide Format Printing at GMG. “It is truly a “smart” profiler, creating the profile depending upon media, ink set, substrate, and other variables. GMG’s time and knowledge is definitely built into the product.” The new SmartProfiler 2.0, which now operates on both OS X and Windows platforms, has a new user interface to make it even easier to get outstanding color results. It is one, complete software application to create all profile components, including print mode, ink splitting, calibration and profile. The integrated media manager inside SmartProfiler offers a complete, streamlined overview of every profile including, for example, spot color edits. GMG Device Link (MX4) profiles are now created on the fly, based upon where the file is intended to be output.

PrePress

There is no longer any need to create several printer-media-mode (PMM) combinations for different RGB and CMYK workflows. Operators can manage the profiles, creating names for parameters such as mode and media that best identify each profile. A new test chart generator recognizes the defined media width and measurement device. SmartProfiler 2.0 also creates optimized test chart layouts for large and wide format printers. It offers full support internal measurement devices, such as those found in HP Designjet and Epson StylusPro. “While an expert can deliver acceptable color results with most any color management solution, with GMG ProductionSuite 2.0, anybody can produce the same exceptional color results, right out of the box,” says Finkbeiner. Layout: More flexibility for a wide variety of jobs With the new Layout feature, GMG ProductionSuite 2.0 will be integrated into even more workflows, producing a wider variety of print products. True shape nesting is very easy to program. For example, users can create 100 stickers, rescale them in three different sizes, and nest them by true shape, all with just a few mouse clicks. Integrated cut and white support are built in.

If desired, users can even open a trueshape nested job within the RIP, change the job layout by readjusting parameters such as the amount of images, job rotation and cutting information—and then print and cut the job. So, nesting can be created by either the prepress operator or the print operator. New interior decoration option Available as a new, additional option, interior decoration can support two significant functions for the digitized creation and printing of textiles and wallpapers: colorways and step & repeat. The ProductionSuite Editor step & repeat tool supports all common algorithms for the textile industry. Patterns can be moved in any direction. Then, colorways allows several colorations within one job. Similar, multiple layouts can be created in different colors on multiple layouts, but with the same, precise step & repeat layout. Most important, with GMG’s color-accurate technology, GMG ProductionSuite can assure one delta-E accuracy in textiles from a digital press, no matter when the file is printed. Thus, textiles and wallpapers are always color and design consistent, a ‘must’ demanded by interior decorators. GMG ProductionSuite Focus Edition: Fully functional wide format workflow at an entry-level price

GMG is also releasing GMG ProductionSuite-Focus Edition, an entry-level price version of GMG ProductionSuite intended for print shops that wish to bundle a complete workflow – instead of solely a RIP – at the time of purchase of a new digital printer. The ProductionSuite Focus Edition is a fully functioning workflow system, including all four ProductionSuite modules. It also offers the same cutting functionality as the standard licensed version. However, it is offered with a one-user license and one printer driver. Upgrades are available to add more printer drivers. Optional modules are not available. “We wanted to offer small and mediumsized print shops the benefits of GMG ProductionSuite, at a very affordable price,” comments Finkbeiner. “Almost immediately, with GMG ProductionSuite Focus Edition, these shops will be able to offer the quality, speed and consistency that a complete automated production workflow provides.”

additional HP Indigo press 5500, an HP Indigo W7200 and two HP Indigo 5600 Digital Presses. In 2012, they purchased the new HP Indigo W7250 Digital Press. Less than two years after they began its transition to digital print, volume from HP Indigo Digital Presses accounted for 20-25 percent of IBS monthly print, with a 25 percent gain in volume year-on-year. IBS’ switch to digital aims to attract corporations and large businesses that need the ability to communicate with their customers and prospects on a one-to-one basis through high-impact trans-promotional documents and direct mail.

Salvador Anaya, senior manager at IBS, explains their business strategy, “We wanted to differentiate our business from the competition by being able to offer a broader range of highvalue products in niche markets. We add value to our printed products by leveraging the convergence between

electronic data and HP’s digital offset printing technology, enabling us to deliver personalized campaigns that give customers additional revenue opportunities and enhance their brand loyalty.” High-impact direct mail campaigns Salvador Anaya describes how they bring value to its customers through the use of the HP Indigo W7250 Digital Press. “The HP Indigo W7250 Digital Press allows us to offer customers differentiated printed mails and promotional material in larger sizes than on traditional offset, and on a wider range of substrates – for much higher impact.” He gives the example of a major bank that was impressed by the differentiated products they could provide. “Our customers are impressed by our new products. We recently printed 1.8 million direct mailers for a major bank to offer their customers bank loans. Instead of using simple stock photography, we added to the images of the piece – checks and credit cards – the actual customers’ details.

The possibilities are almost endless - we can personalize mails with up to 1,800 variable data items. That particular mailing also stood out because of its size and weight: it was 12 x 34 inches (31 x 86.4 cm), and it was printed on heavier 350gm couche paper. We wouldn’t have been able to offer this type of product or size on our traditional offset presses,” he says. Greater productivity with EPM reduces total cost of ownership In addition to offering customers greater product choice with the HP Indigo W7250 Digital Press, its Enhanced Productivity Mode (EPM) enables IBS to significantly cut press production times. Salvador Anaya explains the significant impact this feature is having on its production. “The EPM feature automatically converted the 4x4 color design into a 3x3 color print while maintaining offset-like quality, but with 33 percent higher throughput.” Enhanced productivity has also translated into lower total cost of ownership, according to Salvador Anaya. “Over 11 million pages per month of production using the EPM feature not only speeds up production and saves ink, but also extends the

lifespan of consumables, which reduces downtime for press maintenance procedures.” As a result of the proven gains in productivity and cost savings that IBS has experienced using the new Enhanced Productivity Mode, the company also upgraded its HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press to support the feature. IBS operators manage production of their presses through HP SmartStream Production Pro Print Server, which adds robustness and scalability. In addition, the preventive maintenance and monitoring tool Print Care automatically alerts staff on press status to maximize uptime and optimize performance. Digital offset growth - one niche market at a time Salvador believes that IBS’ current competitive strategy of offering products that satisfy the growing number of niche markets will continue to gain traction over the coming years. He predicts that through strategic alliances with blue chip customers and advertising agencies, HP Indigo Digital Press production will more than double its share and account for 50 percent of IBS’ total - printing volume within the next two years.

Percy Vij, managing director of Centrum says, “We are a general commercial printer at the moment but we see opportunities in niche markets, such as packaging and point of sale. The new KBA Rapida 162a will enable us to enter these markets. We will also be setting up a trade print service to enable other printers to serve that market.” Centrum has two existing mediumformat presses from another German press manufacturer and looked at all other possible presses before settling on KBA. Vij said “We believe that KBA has the best size 7 (7B) press available and also the most experience in this market”. Centrum general manager Sandra Mascaro says, “We already have promises of several million dollars’

worth of packaging work from existing clients and believe that as one of the few printers in the country with this size of press there will be plenty of work out there.” Dave Lewis, general manager of KBA Australasia says, “This is a huge leap forward that Centrum have taken and

Show and clap!

Thunderous applause is known to signify extreme approval and cheers. However, it takes substantial effort and pain. Clap Banner, the UKbased company has created this product and appointed a sole Singapore distributor. Junia Phua shares the “noise” with Christel Lee of Print World Asia. based in Hongkong notes, “The synergy between Generic Print and Clap Banner is the reason we have appointed Generic a distributor of this global brand - seen most weekends around the world on English Premier League matches. Generic’s print facilities are perfect for this cardboardconstructed product. The printer has equipment to address tight timelines if the need arises.”

Before this concept came out, one can recall the pain and sore palms from all that clapping after a sellout concert. Subsequently, inflatable handheld tubes were dispensed to audience to minimise pain. Today, you need a folded fanlike board, which produces equivalent amount of “applause” and doubles as a banner! Junia Phua, Managing Director of Singapore-based Generic Print has successfully taken this product locally with OrangeTee, a Singaporean real

estate company. Taking the “banner”, Phua demonstrated how to create the claps-like noise, which can be loud depending on the amount of effort used. “The beauties of this product are notable! It’s printed, and you can recycle! You are free to personalize and customize through digital print! We are honoured to be the exclusive distributor to Clap Banner,” he highlights. He adds, “Generic has recorded very high praise for their Clap-Banner from various clients who have achieved high levels of participation and involvements from their crowd excitement in the event and the camaraderie of the common goal and general fun atmosphere generated by the Visual and Audio Wow factor the Clap-Banner delivers.” Clap Banner has substantial presence in Europe, America and Asia. Print World Asia caught up with Madeleine Seow, Senior Manager for MarComm at Orange Tee, and there were nothing but praises. Seow highlights, “We were initially curious at the introduction of this product and got Generic Print to tell us more. We used the Clap Banner in our 500 people event – the result was astonishing. The crowd applauded our speakers and winners with this and it revolutionalised our local culture of watching and applauding silently. “Another advantage we enjoyed is the tremendous cost savings! OrangeTee used to print the event materials and pack them into folders to be distributed. Now we can print them onto this Clap Banner and present to the participants. They also keep this Clap Banner as a souvenir.”

Establishment of Joint Venture and Business Integration Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Printing & Packaging Machinery, Ltd. (MHI-PPM) and Ryobi Limited (Ryobi) have signed a shareholder agreement, dated June 20, 2013, on the establishment of a joint venture and implementation of business integration in the field of sheet-fed offset printing presses. The signing took place following receipt of approval by the two companies’ boards of directors. Purpose of the Agreement Both MHI-PPM and Ryobi manufacture and market sheet-fed offset printing presses. Recently, however, the market situation has deteriorated owing to shrinking demand, especially in the developed countries, due to the global economic crisis. This downturn has led both companies to promote internal structural reforms in order to sustain their market competitiveness and financial soundness. As announced on January 23, 2013 in a press release titled “Announcement of Signing a Letter of Intent for Business Alliance on Commercial Printing Machinery”, MHI-PPM and Ryobi agreed to study establishing a business alliance in the field of sheet-fed offset printing presses specifically targeted at improving competitiveness in that area, enhancing scale of operations, and solidifying their management base. Subsequently the two companies held discussions on how to realize an ideal business alliance in this industry. The agreement announced today finalizes plans to establish a joint venture

integrating their respective sheet-fed offset printing machinery businesses in a quest to achieve significant synergy effects including product line-up enhancement, expansion of product development capabilities, production cost reductions, and improvement in sales and service networks. The commercial printing industry presently anticipates demand for printing machinery to strengthen in the emerging economies. Simultaneously demand for higher specification

products is expected to grow further within the mature economies. In creating their new joint venture, MHI-PPM and Ryobi seek to prevail against intensifying global competition and build a stronger presence in the global market. They also aim for the new entity to develop into a leading global company in the printing press industry by meeting customer expectations and providing innovative, high-quality products and outstanding services to the market.

Golden Fall reaps bright future

Zhengzhou Golden Fall Color Printing, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China

Zheng Wei, General Manager

Zhengzhou Golden Fall Color Printing Ltd. was founded on May 1, 2000. The company’s name, taken from the golden fall of harvest season, suggests the bounty that can be gained through the hard work of the company’s employees. Twenty years ago, recent graduate Zheng Wei was working hard in a state-owned enterprise. As Zheng says: “I poured my energies into the job, but I was unable to advance my own career.” So in 1995 he opened a data input and copy service, and Zheng started on the difficult route of founding his own company. Thirteen years have passed since he launched Golden Fall, and the exuberant youth and poet is now a business leader bearing the weight of corporate responsibilities. Long route to prosperity From data input and a copy service to light printing, quarto single-color printing, half-size single-color printing, fourcolor printing with a Chinese press, color printing on a used

Komori On Press

Heidelberg press, and finally to full-service printing on four of Komori’s latest offset presses. This has been Golden Fall’s path to prosperity. Growth amid change Just like many other print houses in China, Golden Fall experienced rapid growth amid a climate of change in the vast market environment and was at times disoriented by the enormous variety of choices that it faced. And there were projects in which large sums were invested that ended up with dreadful results. Zheng says in looking back on that period: “It was important not to deviate from the business plan but to push ahead without any hesitation.”

Single-source supplier of UV solutions IST METZ develops, manufactures and sells systems for the environmentally friendly curing of solvent-free inks, varnishes, silicones and adhesives. The focus of the business is on applications for the graphics industry, but UV systems from IST METZ are also used in the automotive industry and many other industrial applications. Around 500 people worldwide work for the Group founded in 1977, which is based in Nürtingen in southern Germany and is now made up of 15 companies. IST METZ has international subsidiaries in France, England, Italy, the USA, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, China and Thailand. A support network of agencies ensures that the group of companies enjoys a global presence. The Group develops and produces all of the UV system components that are part of its direct core competences. This includes for example reflectors, which have a decisive impact on the quality and efficiency of a UV system. Their geometry and surface properties are primarily responsible for determining the amount of UV light that can be used on the substrate for curing. The majority takeover of VTD Vakuumtechnik Dresden GmbH in November 2003 enabled IST METZ Holding GmbH to expand its know-how and capacities in this key technology.

Partnership with British LED specialist The Group’s portfolio was expanded in 2011 with a partnership stake acquired by Integration Technology Ltd. (ITL) from Upper Heyford, north of Oxford. ITL is a specialist for LED UV technology and works together with IST METZ in both the areas of development and marketing. Through this partnership, Nürtingen‘s UV specialist has not only further strengthened its ties to the important inkjet market but has acquired expertise of the 3D printing market, one that is gaining in signifi- cance in industrial prototyping. The UV Transfer Center (UVTC) is a key element of the Group’s commercial direction. With it, the contact between manufacturers, users and industry partners will be further cemented. The main task of the centre is to provide information and support concerning UV technology and its applications. One of the strengths of this new business unit lies in its combination of expertise in core technologies and focus on practical implementation.

The UVTC is also equipped with stateof- the-art laboratory technology and supports customers on all issues relating to UV technology. The UV Transfer Center supports newcomers to UV and experienced UV users alike with ideas and expert knowledge, underlining the company’s long- standing philosophy of “more than UV”. More efficient with every product generation Products from IST METZ that are particularly energy efficient will now feature the label “e3”. All UV systems from IST METZ are consistently designed with the best possible utilisation of electrical energy in mind. The aim is to significantly increase the energy efficiency of each new product generation in comparison to its predecessor. Energy savings of around 30 percent in comparison to traditional UV systems, as well as lower operating costs for auxiliary systems such as ventila- tion and cooling, are the “green” benefits for the users of these e3 products.

Management/General

New era of publishing Vjoon, the renowned German expert in publishing business has entered China. Andreas Schrader (AS), CEO, shares with Christel Lee of Print World Asia – a preview of the roadmap. PWA: You have made an entry into China as we have read. Does vjoon have any plans to branch out outside of China? Can we take a peek into vjoon’s plans on Asia? AS: vjoon and its local partners are doing business in various Asia-Pacific countries for some years now – for example, with EvioTech in Thailand, Cadgraf Digitals in India, and Nexus IT & Communications Solutions in Australia. The next country on our list is Taiwan and the first customer project in Taiwan is close to be signed. But this region harbors enormous potential for growth in general and our aim is to be much closer to customers and to increase their satisfaction. Especially when it comes to digital media production for tablets, mobile or web we have a proven track record in America and Europe offering sophisticated and professional publishing solutions based on long-term experience. As for example our customer Condé Nast USA is producing its print and digital magazine portfolio, including well-known publications like WIRED, GQ or Vogue, very efficiently and highly automated with our cross-media publishing platform vjoon K4. The experience from such huge and complex productions is a great benefit that we are happy to share with our Asian customers. The result is an optimized and cost efficient multi-channel and future oriented production. PWA: It’s been announced that private dailies will be available in Myanmar. Will we see vjoon having a presence in this new market?

AS: We appreciate that private dailies will be available in Myanmar and we will be happy to support local publishers. Currently we analyse the possibilities to be on the spot in other Asian countries and we are open to talk to strong local IT companies in case they match our

Print World Asia • 6/2013

Management/General 35 requirements to become a member of our partner network. PWA: vjoon appears to cater to both conventional newspapers and digital content, packaging, book printing/ publishing. What would be vjoon’s focus in Asia? We know that book printing is suffering a decline in Asia. AS: We focus on magazine and corporate publishing – and of course we also have newspapers on our customers list. Because of that it’s not a question to be print or digital minded – modern media companies and corporate publishers always have a multi-channel strategy to reach their readers/users. Publishing systems like vjoon K4 are the technical backbone of the publishers strategy and they have to ensure a safe and sound production – even under the pressure of time and costs. Only an efficient process management allows you to invest in content quality, and providing top stories is the key to attract advertisers and to increase revenues. PWA: Workflow is one of your specialties. How does vjoon set itself apart from the other players who have similar? AS: Yes that’s true – most of our competitors offer “efficient workflow systems” and the processes are always “highly automated”. The difference is that we don’t just focus on the workflow system. We focus the entire environment, optimizing the publishing platform, integrated third-party systems (i.e. DAM, planning, color proofing etc.) and services. We call this strategy “Unified Publishing Process” or in short “UPP”. So let me explain the reasons why such strategy makes the difference. Today’s publishing productions are very complex, you need content just in sequence, at low costs and of course at a high quality for any channel. Industrial and commercial companies face similar problems, as studies of their complex production and logistics chains have shown. And the persistent application of sound supply chain management (SCM) practices have proven how successful such processes can be when they are continuously controlled

and partially automated. The Unified Publishing Process was modeled on the tremendously successful SCM strategy. Like SCM, UPP not only manages native processes; it also controls and coordinates third-party systems such as digital asset management (DAM) or image enhancement systems that contribute to the production process. As all the components in an industrial production (i.e. automotive engineering) are delivered just in time in a synchronized logistic and manufacturing process, all the content for the publishing process is delivered at the right time to the right place for the right person or media channel. So you have got end-to-end processes providing improved control over workflows, minimizing coordinative effort and issues. In addition to that it will make your publishing organizations more transparent and improve the flow of information. PWA: Adobe has made alot of announcement on clouds. Should we be anticipating something similar in vjoon in terms of working with clouds? AS: So far cloud was a kind of a marketing phrase – but since Adobe announced its cloud plans the term will propably gain in importance. Basically cloud is almost nothing but a sales concept, which is to combine or overlaps with known concepts as there

are rent, leasing, SaaS, ASP, hosting and housing. But more important is that every customer gets the software of his needs at a really affordable price. That’s the same with our rent offer. You can tailor your vjoon K4 to your needs and the system could be remotely hosted or locally installed – so customers can enjoy the benefits of our productivity-enhancing software, while keeping their investments low. And yes, of course when it comes to marketing, “rent” sounds not much as sexy as “cloud” - but it’s very efficient. In addition to that we always review different service and princing models which are available at the market. And we know that not all of them match our sales strategy. We don’t jump on every bandwagon which just has left the station but if the preconditions match, vjoon will offer a corresponding alternative as well. PWA: Any last messages? AS: Entering the Chinese market is an important step within our strategy to strengthen our worldwide position. Our customers will benefit from this with a higher quality of services and a sophisticated software development, based on the experience of more than 20 years, some 500 worldwide system installations with over 22,500 concurrent seats and publishing environments in a range from 10 to more than 1,400 concurrent users.

Andreas Schrader, CEO vjoon GmbH Andreas Schrader is Chief Executive Officer and founder of vjoon. He is responsible for defining and leading the company’s growth and development strategies, the overall product strategy and software architecture. Together with the team of directors he represents the company to the public. In the early days of vjoon, he engineered many of the solutions himself. During his 25 years of experience in the publishing industry and prior to vjoon, he worked as a consultant and developer for several software vendors, including Adobe, Letraset and MetaCreations. He took part in the desktop publishing revolution in Germany and helped to integrate the early desktop solutions with prior proprietary publishing solutions.

Scope of performance enhanced The Weppert printing company, having put a Speedmaster XL 106 into operation at the end of last year, is once again investing in a new printing machine from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, a Speedmaster CD 102-6-L-UV. The company – located in Schweinfurt – is hereby strengthening its position as a Norbert Hettrich, managing partner competence center for innovative printing products. of Druckhaus Weppert Schweinfurt GmbH

The Weppert printing company in Schweinfurt is maintaining a course of steady growth. With the purchase of a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102-6-LUV, the printing company is expanding its modern machinery and increasing its range of high-quality print finishing and print effects. In the words of Norbert Hettrich, managing partner of Weppert, “This machine perfectly complements our workflow and represents yet another increase in productivity. With this investment in UV technology, we can exercise even better control over the quality of print finishing in the future. And our customers benefit from a broader selection of high-quality finishing, metallic effects, as well as spot and full-surface coating”. The investment in the 6-color printing machine is part of the growth strategy of the printing company from Schweinfurt, which would like to position itself as the market leader in the growing online print sector. With its brands xposeprint, VIP Print and Buecher.vipprint, Weppert experienced an increase in turnover of 18 per cent in 2012, with the online business alone attaining three-digit growth. This most recent machine purchase also serves the expansion of the Internet sector. Thanks to the larger range of design possibilities using UV technology, the portal xposeprint.de has established itself in the market as an online platform for high-quality, effective printing products at competitive prices and is continuing to cement its position as Germany’s most cost-effective printer of brochures.

Printing with UV technology provides benefits both for Weppert and for its customers. When the printing inks are dried in a process using UV light, the liquid binding agent components of the UV ink become cross-linked within seconds to form a solid film. The printed sheets dry immediately and the print product can then undergo any further processing right away, all of which leads to an increase in manufacturing efficiency. In addition, UV coating gives the printed materials a particularly high gloss and a great feel, combined with good protection and scratch resistance. This makes brochures, flyers, advertising material or stickers extremely effective and classy. The Speedmaster CD 102-6-L-UV is the sixth sheet-fed offset machine of the printing company. After some design changes in the production halls, it will go into production in Plant I in the Schweinfurt location at the end of April. This start-up coincides with the introduction of new employees into the

production department, who bring with them the relevant expertise in dealing with UV inks and coatings, as well as with the appropriate print substrates. Since 1839, the name Weppert has stood for competence and quality in printing. With innovative product developments and using the most up-todate technologies, the printing company has grown from a former workshop into a successful company in the printing industry. With its brands xposeprint, VIPprint and Buecher.vipprint, Weppert is today a competence center for high-quality and individual online print products and, with more than 26,000 items, covers the whole range of printing needs in the business world. Weppert offers a complete service to its customers – from design and implementation, through manufacture and finishing, and all the way up to the perfect end product. We also take care of the complete logistics chain, right up to the handover of a print product to the end customer.

Packaging Technology

QuadTech places emphasis on packaging in Asia QuadTech is renowned in the market for its strength in newspapers. However, market forces seemed to have opened new doors. Randall W. Freeman, Vice President and GM for Packaging, sheds some light. Christel Lee reports. QuadTech’s control and data management products have been an active staple in newspaper pressrooms up until the last few years when online content gained a stronger position. This challenge prompted the United Statesbased company to relook at business strategies. “For packaging in Asia, our work is primarily with gravure printers. Our strength is in registration control and quality inspection. Our showcase at China Print is a new product: measuring inline colour for packaging. For web offset, a large number of Chinese customers have been using QuadTech equipment – registration systems and inline colour control. comments Freeman . For packaging printers, the new Color Quality Solution simplifies colour preparation in packaging printing. This provides a standard spectral colour measurement throughout the

ink dispensing and printing stages. It includes in-line spectral data obtained from QuadTech’s SpectralCam™, ink formulation data from X-Rite and ink dispensing technology from Huber Group or other ink dispensing system suppliers. This is not to say however, that the company has withdrawn from newspapers. Charles Irons, International Sales Manager, comments: “Typically

we work on an OEM basis, working with all of the OEMs selling presses in the market. ” Freeman adds, “Our market in India continues to grow especially in packaging and newspapers, . For commercial printing, we face the challenge of pre-owned presses coming into the market. However, they often have older auxiliaries and offer opportunities for upgrades. We are in the process of appointing agents primarily for packaging for different countries throughout Asia. We see a lot of potential for QuadTech in Thailand and Indonesia.” When asked about QuadTech’s strategy, Freeman is not one to mince words. “QuadTech was formed many years ago to find ways to improve print quality. We have been looking at ways to keep print viable. Quality is paramount, minimising waste is essential,” he explains. From left: Charles Irons, International Sales Manager, Randall W. With our MBO-China organization we can offer excellent sales and service supply our customer can trust on.” MBO’s success is further enhanced by the announcement of KBA’s sheetfed offset organization taking on exclusive sales and service responsibility for MBO machines in selected countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, and will be assisting the existing MBO

sales teams on a commission basis in respect of suitable projects elsewhere. Frank Eckert, Managing Director of MBO and Ralf Sammeck, KBA’s Executive Vice-President for sheetfed offset sales, signed the cooperation agreement on site. Frank Eckert said: “KBA offers a very broad range of sheetfed offset, web and digital presses. And MBO adds to this spectrum ideally with its own comprehensive portfolio of folding machines and systems for digital web finishing and post press handling. KBA builds the largest and fastest sheetfed offset presses and we build the largest and fastest folding machines on the world market. Both companies are extremely technology-oriented. We are looking forward to cooperating with the second-largest press manufacturer in the world.” Ralf Sammeck added: “MBO has a very good reputation in the print industry, not least thanks to its efficient products and its strong focus on innovative technology. I am confident that we will complement each other well in the combination of print and finishing, and that our joint customers around the world will benefit from our extensive know-how and new ideas on both sides.”

A new perspective on print “There is no indication of a crisis of print as a product. There is however a crisis of losers in the competitive market economy,” notes Kai Büntemeyer, President of Kolbus. He explains to Christel Lee of Print World Asia. Many in the industry push the panic button the moment any economy announces a decline. The domino effect reaches exporters down to suppliers. Recent spurts of liquidation and acquisition are engendering mixed feelings, resulting in persistent debate between exit strategies and being ousted altogether. All in the books Book printing has been in the hot seat lately – with tablets overtaking conventional printed content. However, Kolbus remains unfazed. Kai Büntemeyer, President of Kolbus, shared in our conversation at China Print – such is nothing more than how one perceives print. Take, for example, the latest news about Page One expanding in Hong Kong. It’s a massive book retailer not only sprouting more outlets within the country, it even announced plans to plant an outlet in a hotel! This is a clear message book printing (for Page One at least) remains robust!

“It’s quite easy to understand if you understand the mechanics. Printing in general is not declining. There are shifts and movements in the market. There are players suffering and some are hoarding headlines. There’s an iron rule: printing develops the same as an economy does in general. “On the worldwide scale, we have different scenarios for our developments in the next 15 years with different levels of growth. These levels of growth are exclusively attributed to different levels of world economic growth, not based on reader/consumer behaviour,” Büntemeyer explains. He elaborates, “Take Germany for instance, the economic growth for the last three decades has been an average of one or two percent. A company like Kolbus, and many others, can deliver up to 25% productivity improvement in an eight to nine year generation cycle. For the last 30 years in Germany, the pace at which we have increased productivity has been far greater than the growth

of the printing market. This is why so many customers are dying. “There is increased productivity in the slow-growing market and the number of printers is steadily going down, resulting in the impression of industrial decline. There is no indication of a crisis of print as a product. There is however a crisis of losers in the competitive market economy.

Kai Büntemeyer, President of Kolbus,

Print World Asia • 6/2013

Finishing Technology “Combine that with a scenario of every player upping their productivity by three percent and you will get a smooth ride. Unfortunately, it’s the case of smart players increasing their productivity by three percent and the others get ousted out of competition.” Still in good books Such a market perspective has kept Kolbus actively in business today, and ever strong in China. Its long history adds to the vast experience the company has in its craft. In China alone, Kolbus’ entry dates back to 1978, Büntemeyer shares. However, the company hasn’t been exempt from challenges. “China has been among the top three export destinations for Kolbus year-on-year since 1999. For the past seven to eight years, China has accounted for some 10% of our global sales. The rest of Asia without Japan would be 5%, including Japan and Australia would be more than 20% of our sales. “The most successful markets have been Thailand and Malaysia. Three decades back, I would include Singapore, due to the exodus of manufacturing facilities. There are also markets of the future (in my opinion): India, Indonesia. I feel India would be a market in continuum though I don’t expect to see any massive booms. Indonesia has potential in accordance with the rate of economic growth”, he adds.

43

“Printing is a highly capital-intensive industry; it’s also a service industry – dependent on people’s skills.” ~ Kai Büntemeyer, President of Kolbus

How to keep your edge Being at the helm for 17 years, Büntemeyer has observed his fair share of how printing businesses are run. Some ways were clear contributors to downfall. “It’s not easy to start a printing company. It is highly visible and physical, compared to its financial strength. For instance, if you start steel work, you need a physical presence. But you also must have enormous financial strength to overcome difficulty. “The ratio between financial strength to physical presence is not favourable. Therefore more time is needed to consider before taking the plunge to run a printing company. Printing is a

highly capital-intensive industry; it’s also a service industry – dependent on people’s skills. I often see printers not aware of the condition of their companies,” he observes. Büntemeyer recommends: “Focus on productivity – regardless of market status be it saturated or emerging. It decides your survival. If you are in an emerging market, allow your productivity to grow in accordance with the rate of demand for your product notwithstanding the comfort level. In a saturated market, increasing productivity equates to fighting for a bigger space volume against the competition.”

Müller Martini faced with longterm reform of the company The Müller Martini Group is suffering from the difficult economic conditions and continuing structural change in the graphics industry. Although Müller Martini has successfully preserved its position as a market leader, revenues have fallen massively over the last four years. Müller Martini is therefore looking at a fundamental restructuring over the months ahead. The aim of the reform of the company is to preserve its future role as a leader in the shrunken global graphics industry through innovative printing and print finishing products together with a highquality customer service, and to put the company on a sustainable and futureoriented foundation. In addition, Müller Martini must adapt the size of the company to a scaled-back market to enable it to continue investing in future-oriented product developments. Commitment to the industry in the contracted market The reason behind the on-going difficult situation is the fundamental transformation of the graphics industry. The resultant consolidation among printing companies has significantly reduced the customer base. Many existing and potential customers are holding back on investment - or are being prevented from investing in new

equipment due to the lack of credit. There is significant pressure on prices and margins; in addition the strong Swiss franc exchange rate is having a detrimental impact on profit margins. “In order to survive in strong shape, we cannot avoid the need to operate on a smaller scale,” says CEO Bruno Müller, adding, "However, by concentrating our forces, we will do our utmost to continue to intensify the comprehensive advice we provide to our customers on new investments and in particular in the service area. Our sales and service network regionalization program,

AIRDOT Ä C XY      

which was initiated last year, gives us a good starting point in this context.” Search for a solution started Over the coming weeks the search for solutions will be focusing on all manufacturing locations and areas of the group at home and abroad. This will include an in-depth look at consolidating the two main sites in Zofingen and Felben which are not operating at sufficient capacity. In total up to 550 jobs worldwide could be affected by the restructuring. A decision is expected in the next few months.

Rotomec 4003 gravure printing press for Sri Lanka Packages Lanka (Pvt) Limited was established in 1998 in JaEla, near the capital Colombo in Sri Lanka to manufacture packaging materials. The company operates as a subsidiary of Pakistan-based Packages Limited Group.

“The Rotomec 4003 printing line has been chosen because it proved the best solution to meet our specific requirements," said Mr Ghani "It also follows our satisfaction with the high productivity of our existing Rotomec gravure press which produces high quality printing to demanding specifications on a variety of substrates with rapid make-ready and changeovers.”

In a momentous event held on 8th March 2013, Packages Lanka presented to a large gathering of guests from the world of industry its new state-of-theart BOBST Rotomec 4003 gravure printing press. The event was presided over by the Group founder Syed Babar Ali and by his son Syed Hyder Ali, Managing Director of Packages Limited.

The new 8-colour Rotomec 4003 printing line will be added to Packages Lanka’s existing gravure printing machines, also supplied by BOBST, at a newly constructed production facility. A major player in the region under the leadership of Managing Director, Mr Rizwan Ghani, Packages Lanka serves leading multinational and domestic FMCG companies in Sri Lanka and world-wide. The business focus is mainly on food, tea, confectionery, household & personal care, apparel industries and exports. In line with Packages Lanka’s policy of investing in advanced equipment technology, the new Rotomec 4003 gravure printing press will play a big part in the company’s continuous drive towards business expansion. The company operates with 150 employees.

A trolley-type press, the Rotomec 4003 has been designed to provide maximum ease of machine operation enabling the operator to perform a complete trolley change in one single operation. The full integration of the Electronic Shaft with BOBST Registron S5100 register control system results in much faster register correction which allows improvement of press productivity and sustainability by considerably reducing waste. “Quality of printing was a main requirement given the high-end market segments we serve, together with flexibility and cost efficiency. Here we run BOBST gravure and flexo presses for flexible packaging and there are several BOBST machines, including board printing & converting that are in operation in the other facilities of the Group. We know the advantages of choosing good equipment and its service support, and this is an important criterion in our investment choices,” concluded Mr Ghani.

Plate for ASIAN market

Agfa has introduced the newly developed :Aiyinda, a series of thermal CTP plate, for Asian market. :Aiyinda 803 is a long run length, high resolution no-bake plate designed for difficult pressroom conditions. There are two key factors affecting a plate’s durability: mechanical wear and chemical corrosion. Many CTP plates perform very well under specific printing conditions. But then run length will drop significantly under demanding situations. :Aiyinda 803 plate uses the double layer coating technology. The top layer is the Thermal Sensitive Layer, the bottom layer is the Agfa patented Chemical Resistent Layer. The result is sharp and durable dots that endure even the longest print runs - even 1% dot will not be lost, while its superior ink taking ensures perfect reproduction of solid colour. Due to its double layer coating technology, :Aiyinda 803 is compatible with UV and metallic inks without the need for post baking, achieving more than 80,000 impressions, fully meet the requirement of the packaging market for the print quality, low energy consumption and environmental friendly. Together with the other CTP plates - the long run, no-bake :Energy Elite, chemistry free :Azura TS, and development-free :Amigo TS, Agfa offers a complete range of thermal CTP plates, providing the best choice for printers by fulfilling different applications. :Aiyinda The standard in Asian digital plates.

New Fuji Xerox wide format printer takes PacPrint 13 by storm Fuji Xerox launched their new fast wide format printer at PacPrint13 – one of the biggest print and publishing conferences - in Melbourne, Australia recently. Hailed as a real ‘game changer’ by those who saw it, the DocuWide C842 prints at a blistering speed of 320 sqm per hour - that is an A0 sheet every 8.6 seconds. PacPrint13 was the ideal platform for the first public viewing of the DocuWide C842 where a number of leading solutions and applications for the graphic communications market were showcased under the banner ‘Freedomland’.

DocuWide C842 “Businesses today need more freedom and time to invest in talent, develop new ideas and focus on growing revenue,” commented Stephen Ball, Fuji Xerox Australia’s Marketing Manager of Graphic Communications. “By simplifying workflow and production processes, Fuji Xerox solutions free up time for these core business priorities.” Pegasus Print, a fifty-year old company employing 210 staff in Blacktown, New South Wales, was the first to test and invest in the DocuWide C842. Now, some months later, Pegasus Print has seen many benefits to their business and to their ability to meet their clients’ needs for large format printing. Produce more work The printer is truly productive whatever measure is used. It can cover an Olympic sized swimming pool in four hours and a standard tennis court in 49 minutes. A more useful description of its capability is at another Fuji Xerox Australia customer, Creffield, the largest producer of plans in Australia. Jobs that used to take Creffield up to two days to complete are now ready in four hours. That is a significant saving in terms of production time and turnaround time for their clients. Reduce costs The small footprint of the DocuWide C842 has added to the savings for Pegasus as they have been able to

replace their existing A2 presses which required a lot more space. In addition, they were able to save the costs required to produce up to 10,000 printing plates every year. Using the printer’s ink saving capability reduced the usage up to 40 percent while maintaining image quality. Grow your business A print provider that can offer high productivity and fast turnaround times can potentially create additional capacity for more work. However, there are also other attributes such as compatibility with a wide range of substrates ranging from 64gsm to 190gsm, coated and uncoated media through to polyester film that widens the application set. Pegasus certainly believes that their DocuWide C842 has opened up new opportunities for them in the promotional, plan printing and architecture environments. In summary The DocuWide C842 is a very productive, cost effective and high quality wide format printer that can bring new opportunities to expand and grow your business. Textile as the next big substrate? Paper has been facing substantial torrent of pressure from environmentalist – that a renowned paper producer has vowed to keep off rainforests. The biggest market for our industry turns out to be India. Combine that with textile… Christel Lee investigates.

India catching up Infotrends has recently released a report about India’s potential for digital printing. InfoTrends Indian Country Analyst Nakul Sharma adds, “The Indian print industry today is comprised of more than 250,000 printer services providers of varying sizes with a total turnover of around $20 billion. Almost 75% of print service providers are family-owned businesses and, hence, their market value is closely held.” The report reveals India represents not only a growing population, but also a very large print market. At this time, the Indian print market is still focusing heavily on offset and other analog processes. Like many sectors of the Indian economy, it relies on exports for a significant portion of its total revenue. Despite the size and healthy growth rate of the Indian print market, information on PSPs’ equipment purchase decisions, applications, software, and

workflows is scarce. As the market in India grows, it is important for vendors to know what factors are considered when PSPs are looking to expand their businesses. Jim Hamilton, Director of InfoTrends Production consulting services says, "My recent trip to PrintPack India was a real eye-opener. There is tremendous interest in wide format, production digital document printing, and hybrid inkjet printing, yet the market requirements are very

different. Nakul’s research in this area provides an important foundation towards understanding the Indian market’s evolving needs." InfoTrends also found most western companies from developed economies that are looking to enter this market should seek out the larger, better capitalised Indian print service providers. These are the PSPs most likely to open to change, since they

Print World Asia • 6/2013

Management/General 51 are the most likely to be in or entering production new digital printing in India. In large part because they are less costly, western-origin print-related software and finishing equipment have a broader and better-established market. Thus (to an extent) smaller, less well-capitalized Indian print providers can also be worthwhile targets for those products. Comes the textile The beauty about digital printing has found its way into textiles. Apart from the usual advantages of variable-data printing and minimizing wastage, digital printing is known to use less energy and water (in comparison to traditional printing). According to ATA Journal for Asia on Textile and Apparel late last year, the fastest growing for digital printing is coloration of textile; printing on silk and polyester materials. Textile printing is present everywhere – apparels and furnishings. The most common technology used is that of Konica Minolta. The company produces printheads for industrial and textile printers.

In 2007, digital printing accounted for less than 1% of the global market for printed textiles and in 2010, the digital textile printing had reached 2% with the total production volume of 200 million sqm per annual. Huntsman Corporation, the global chemical company showed global production volume of printed textiles (as at October 2012) stands at 25-30

billion metres per annum. Only 2% is digitally-printed while the rest is screen-printed. Analysts predicted up to 15% of globally-printed textiles will be done digitally. InfoTrends estimates that the value of digitally printed textile garments, décor items, and industrial products is valued at $10.3 billion in 2012. The global value of digital textile printing is currently (2012) $10.3 billion, the InfoTrends forecast has it reaching $30bn by 2016. India may just dominate A report in Indian Textile Magazine early 2013 said India currently ranks second in both apparel (13%) and fabric production (18%). India’s share of the world textile and apparel exports currently stands at 4.5%. It is estimated that due to the increasing

AIRDOT Ä C XY      

shift in textile and apparel production to Asian nations and the reducing export competitiveness of China, this figure will grow to eight per cent by 2020. This growth will open up huge potential for Indian players. Quoting Inkjet Forum India, the report estimates the current market size and market value of digital textile printing in India at 30-40 million linear metres/year and $100-150 million/ year respectively. Digital print houses in India print 500-4,000 linear meter/ days. However, the ink players also play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of this prediction. Consistency, adequate pricing and technical support are major factors making the whole transaction viable.

Of the added presses, nearly half stemmed from new HP Indigo customers (2). Interest from current customers also continued, with more than 20 percent of customer sites now owning multiple HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses (3). HP's momentum across the labels and packaging industry continues, with more than 50 companies around the world now producing folding carton and flexible packaging on HP Indigo Digital Presses. In addition, more than 100 customers have agreed to purchase the HP Indigo 20000 and 30000 Digital Presses, including 10 of the largest flexible packaging converters in the world and several multinational folding carton converters. First installations of the presses are planned for the end of 2013. "Brands of all sizes are increasingly demanding packaging with higher shelfappeal and are producing more and more packaging using HP Indigo digital printing capabilities, generating demand for our customers," said Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager, Indigo Division, HP. "Our latest HP Indigo product improvements and workflow solutions help print service providers and converters accommodate production of more jobs with greater efficiency and higher uptime, while supporting a wider range of applications without compromising quality." Enhanced quality and flexibility HP continues bringing to market product upgrades that improve automation, workflow and production efficiency while expanding the range of applications. The new HP SmartStream Labels and Packaging Print Server, version 4.0, powered by Esko, is a solution for simplified colour management and automated job preparation. This new colour engine transforms existing processes by automating common procedures that are time-consuming. The result is quick and accurate colour management with fewer manual workflow steps required for efficient, high-quality printing. For added flexibility in file preparation, the solution also includes new imposition and variable-data tools, including dynamic marks. The transformation of existing workflows and procedures will allow for time

savings of up to 70 per cent throughout the entire colour management process (4) and enable an average of 25 per cent more jobs per shift (5). This new solution will be available in September at Labelexpo Brussels as an upgrade for all HP Indigo WS6000 and WS4000 series Digital Presses, permitting existing customers the ability to protect their investment in HP Indigo equipment. New end-to-end solution for label production with the HP Indigo 20000 To help HP Indigo users expand their range of applications, HP is working together with AB Graphic, Int. on new end-to-end solutions for label converting on a wide web. AB Graphics' Digicon 3000, designed specifically to support the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press specifications, will be integrated inline with the press, allowing one pass for optimised production of labels and flexible packaging. Its modular design will enable users to produce labels and a variety of flexible packaging laminates. The solution will be showcased at Labelexpo in Brussels and will be available upon release of the HP Indigo 20000. Top label producers RAKO-GROUP and Innovative Label Solutions (ILS) will install the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press by the end of the year. RAKOGROUP is one of the largest and most advanced producers of self-adhesive labels in Europe and ILS is a leading U.S. company in the pressure-sensitive label industry. Both companies are already using HP Indigo presses to produce labels and flexible packaging. New finishing products for folding cartons streamline HP Indigo 30000 workflow With the introduction of the HP Indigo 30000 to mainstream production, leading folding carton players are investing in complimentary technologies. New finishing products powered by TRESU

Group and Kama will become available with the HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press in 2014. TRESU Group, a leading supplier of coating solutions, will provide an in-line coater for the HP Indigo 30000. The Tresu iCoat 30000 will allow for both UV and aqueous post-print selective coating. Designed to match the HP Indigo 30000 capabilities, this in-line coater will offer an optimised process for the digital production environment. Kama recently unveiled a complement to its existing solutions for folding carton finishing. The newly developed stripping and blanking unit (SBU) (6) contains programmable rollers to strip waste and blank printed boxes without the need for expensive tools or cumbersome manual processes. The SBU joins Kama's DC 76 die cutter, a die cutting and foil unit with automatic registration camera for a complete, digital compatible finishing solution. KODAK NEXPRESS Gold Solution Adds Sparkle to a Wide Variety of Print Jobs Kodak previewed the NEXPRESS Gold Solution at drupa 2012 and has been busy perfecting the solution with beta customers around the world over the past 12 months. Boasting a large number of commercial and special projects produced during that time, KODAK NEXPRESS Gold Dry Ink has proven to be an attention-getting addition wherever it has been used. Customers have been eagerly anticipating the solution, which is now available globally. Designed for commercial printers, photo printers, and in-plant printers, the NEXPRESS Gold Solution is a unique option for KODAK NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions, enabling printers to add a gold metallic effect as a fifth color. Early adopters in the beta program are finding that the combination of gold effects with the outstanding output of KODAK NEXPRESS Presses is opening new opportunities for adding value to digital print jobs. “We’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of different projects with NEXPRESS Gold Dry Ink, and our clients have really embraced this new capability,” said Ken Dunn, Digital Operations Manager at Westamerica Graphics, an early beta customer in Foothill Ranch, California. “Some of our existing clients have incorporated gold as part of a brand color

or accent for use with certain projects, and they have seen an immediate benefit from being able to print digital jobs with gold—from the economy of short runs and the quick turnaround to the savings of not having to send out for expensive gold foil or embossing work. The direct mail, certificates, and other projects we have produced now have a look that only we can create...and it looks fantastic!” No other digital cut-sheet press in the market offers a gold metallic solution, especially with the option to print lengths up to 36 inches/914mm on more than 800 different substrates. Beta customers are using the new gold capability to replace work they used to have to send out to complete, resulting in better revenue and better margins. Customers also are picking up new business and new clients with the introduction of gold. Some early applications include certificates, direct mail, marketing materials, photo books, invitations, greeting cards, and more. Montreal-based fine artists Louise and Joseph Simone have been working with Kodak to integrate NEXPRESS Gold Dry Ink into some of their prints and are thrilled with the quality and vibrancy it adds to their work. “For close to 35 years, we have been in this beautiful adventure of imagery, and we are always looking for a tool or technology that will enhance our signature style,” noted Louise Simone. “The gold gives us a way to be different in the market and gives a touch of class and higher value. This new tool will open doors for us.” X-Rite offers NetProfiler with eXact premium package X-Rite, Incorporated now offers a

premium support package to customers of eXact spectrophotometers that includes a one-year license to use NetProfiler 3.0 so instruments worldwide can be calibrated to the same virtual standard. The recently introduced eXact spectrophotometer has been embraced by brand managers, prepress, pre-media personnel, ink suppliers, printers and converters as an answer to the widespread problem of measuring and matching colors on various substrates and surfaces. With split-second measurement times and improved accuracy to simplify workflow, the eXact instrument is the only spectrophotometer in the industry to give customers a way to measure true daylight conditions by supporting all the M Standards inclusive of the complete M1 for both ink and substrates. By offering the NetProfiler option in a premium support package, X-Rite is making it easy for eXact customers to optimize, verify and ascertain on a regular basis that their instruments are calibrated to a single virtual standard with handheld and benchtop spectrophotometers used at locations globally. NetProfiler can ensure that color measurements taken throughout the supply chain -- in design departments,

News on factory floors and in test labs -- are accurate and reliable. All spectrophotometers should be calibrated following maintenance schedules because they experience some data drift over time due to age and use. NetProfiler provides: • reports that detail instrument performance, compliance status by location and instrument; • a means to exchange color data easily with business partners that may have various types of color-measurement instruments; and, • a new improved calibration media allowing the number of color standards to be reduced, streamlining the profiling process. The premium support package for eXact also includes unlimited repairs, annual certification, priority technical standard support, free loaners units on accelerated deliveries and an hour consultation with an X-Rite Color Expert. The eXact instrument is a simple-touse device fully compliant with ISO 13655:2009 measurement standards that is specifically designed to match proofto-press across many substrates used in a supply chain. In addition to using advanced measurement technology, eXact is easy to learn, thanks to the intuitive software and touch screen controls. MGA inks of hubergroup now in China The topic of food packaging is becoming increasingly important in Asia, as in other parts of the world, and for this reason the hubergroup has installed the first mixing station for low-migration inks in China. The food-packaging market in China

is huge, and continuing to expand. After several scandals surrounding contaminated food and environmental pollution, Chinese officials have put the environment and consumer protection on top of their agenda. So far the focus is not yet on packaging, but great urgency is currently being attached to drawing up guidelines for food itself, modeled on European Directives. In addition, multinational food corporations and confectionery manufacturers are forcing their way onto the Chinese market more and more. Every brand of chocolate that we are familiar with over here, for example, can already be found in selected high-end supermarkets in China's modern conurbations. At the moment China still imports packaged confectionery. But as soon as sales volumes start to rise, it will be necessary to manufacture the packaging locally in China. In order to ensure that their Chinese customers enjoy the full range of services and the same product safety provided by MGA products and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), a new MGA mixing station was now put into operation in Shenzhen by the hubergroup, manufacturer and expert for food packaging inks. In the context of sustainability, many brand owners instruct their printing houses and packaging producers to use MGA inks of the hubergroup. Selected printing houses in China have also produced small test print runs of food packaging destined for the European market using MGA. In global markets, brand owners focus on standardised production processes that affect not only the products but also their packaging. In packaging production location advantages are increasingly used, specifically to maintain the competitiveness of a brand.

News Wife, being a romantic sort, sent her husband a text: "If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. "If you are laughing, send me your smile. "If you are eating, send me a bite. "If you are drinking, send me a sip. "If you are crying, send me your tears. "I love you!" The husband, replied, "Am on toilet .......Please advise." The train was quite crowded, and a U.S. marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well dressed, middleaged, French woman's female poodle. The war-weary Marine asked, 'Ma'am, may I have that seat?' As soon as this happens........ retire with dignity.......

The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular 'Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat.' The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog. 'Please, ma'am. May I sit down? I'm very tired...' She snorted, 'Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant!' This time the Marine didn't say a word, he just picked up the little dog, tossed it out the train window and sat down. The woman shrieked, 'Someone must defend my honour! This American should be put in his place!' An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up, 'Sir, you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold the fork in the wrong hand. You drive your cars on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you seem to have thrown the wrong bitch out the window'.
